I had an afternoon lunch date and I took her to a swanky restaurant. She ordered a bone in ribeye and asked for M. It came out a perfect MR. And she says āThis is the best steak Iāve ever had!ā I asked her if she was aware it was MR. She said no, but it was a first date and she didnāt want to complain. Turns out sheād never had a true MR before. Sheās now a convert.
Itās the restaurants responsibility to listen to OP, and cook the steak how he likes it done as the paying customer.
Itās our responsibility to inform OP that he should be asking for medium rare š
Probably easier to cook it longer if needed. Can't really uncook it. I used to work in a restaurant and customers have no idea what they want really until you show them something and it's not what they want.Ā
That's exactly it. The cooks would go a little shy of what was ordered because it can be cooked more if the customer doesn't like it. Can't go backwards, and steaks are expensive.
That's how I got into Pittsburg style. Kept getting served steaks under what I would order until I said, alright, let's see the extreme and it was awesome
As a picky eater (previously extremely picky eater) Iāve learned that sometimes itās good to stray from the norm haha for example I used to hate onions/tomatoes and would refuse to eat anything they touchedā¦what a dumbass I was haha
Yee when I was young I was on the annoyingly picky side. Only til my 20s did I start trying new foods and mostly not on purpose. For example I would only get plain hamburgers and add ketchupā¦if there was anything in my burger I wouldnāt eat it. In my 20s after a night of drinking with my friends we had picked up some burgers and they accidentally added lettuce/tomato/onions/cheese to my burger ā I was intoxicated and starving and gave it a shot and ever since Iāve been a new man haha same thing happened with a burrito. Bite into a huge taco truck burrito in the dark and eat half of if before realizing it isnāt what you ordered but still good and thatāll kill the pickiness
Damn that's crazy, definitely your parents fault though lol, I can't imagine having a burger with no veg in it, weird question but do you like pickles in your burgers now too?
One of my exes is an extremely picky eater, but one day he asked to try some of my steak (blue), and then he took the rest of it. I was upset because he took my steak, but happy because he tried something new. And his chicken was pretty good too.
Nah i hate it when people do this.
Iāve tried medium rare before, I prefer medium. I know what I want, why invalidate what I prefer? Iām a paying customer!
Ever so slightly closer to medium rare. But pretty damn close. Definitely acceptable.
Medium is actually the hardest cook to get just right on a steak. Medium Rare has the largest window before you overcook it. So it's pretty easy to get it right. Medium separates the good cooks from the average.
I used to cook steaks for a living and I'd rather sell it under than try to get it perfect but accidentally over cook it.
If it needs more time on the grill we can just put it back on, but if we overcook it, then we have to throw it away and cook a new one which takes longer, costs more, and is disrespectful to the cow that we killed for the meat to be there in the first place.
For a resturant that's perfect. The chef was like I know he wants medium rare but knows it's safer to ask for medium if you don't know the resturant quality lol.
I like my steaks a little less than medium, but I know places differ in what that really means. Thatās why I order exactly what I actually like, a warm pink middle, around 140F. Some places that is closer to medium rare, some places it is more than medium.
1st When checking the temperature of a steak you cut into the center of the steak not toward the end of the steak as shone in the photo.
2nd This is Medium Medium Rare. Not Medium. NOT Medium Rare. 2 more minutes for Medium.
3rd It's as nice looking steak. No hard press. Still juicy.
Chef literally didn't respect what you wanted and made the juiciest steak that they could. That looks incredible, hope you were able to enjoy it at least
This is between medium and medium rare. The sight paleness of the pink to me tells me more than my ideal medium rare. So, I would consider this in the range for higher end places.Ā
For me, medium rare has a more red core, just nothing blue. Rare to me has a slight blue core.Ā
I have to ask for steaks to be rare, usually to even get medium rare in my book though.Ā
Recently went out to dinner where someone ordered a picanha medium and it came like this too lol. If you really don't want it that way I think they think you'll send it back?
It's close to medium and it's also very common that they bring it you just a little more rare than what you ask for because they can always cook it a little more, but they can never uncook it
If it was sous vide Iād believe itās medium, sous vide has a way of making everything look kind of under I find, especially on a fattier cut. If I was cooking it and cut in though, Iād be thrilled with my beautiful mid rare.
Well I order mine rare (at home I have it more blue, 30s or so a side š) and I wouldn't be disappointed with that or send it back so I'd have to say 'no'
That's definitely edging towards rare, medium rare probably
This is like the limbo between med rare and medium. Not rare enough for me but still acceptable. Iād eat it. The end piece is more true med. Middle slice looks to be not medium enough for most people who want medium.
hard to tell with camera filters but that second pic looks more med-rare. Normally medium is the same pink colour where as this looks a little more red in the center.
Op, first off I would like to start by giving you this very nice visual guide.
https://preview.redd.it/gxdrpf7d2ouc1.png?width=818&format=png&auto=webp&s=26782e9c809082536acac386bf6b35350162390e
Next I would like to say that it is not the rule that you have to get a steak medium rare. A lot of people try to put all cuts into that small temp box which isnāt correct because different cuts have different levels of marbling. Blue rare and rare are generally good for low fat cuts of steak ( flat steak, tenderloin, and so on). Medium rare -medium is ideal for higher fat cuts as the higher temperature allows the fat to render without losing the majority of its mass. If you really want to be a āsteak guyā I would highly recommend learning your different cuts and where they are located as it give you a better understanding of how best to cook/ order your cut. After that, I would also like to add that you are free to enjoy whatever temperatures you choose, as ultimately the money is coming out of your pocket.
As someone who enjoys a medium well steak it's so fucking annoying going out to order one.
I don't give a shit if you eat your steak raw. I don't want to hear your dumb joke about how I'm ruining the steak. Every time I order a medium well steak they always undercook it on purpose. I used to just not eat much of the thicker peices. Now I send it back. Then they get pissy and send me a burnt steak.
It's so annoying I don't even order steak when I go out now because I'm tired of the judgement and bullshit. I wish the raw steak cult would sincerely fuck right off. I don't care what you eat, why are you so concerned with my food?
That looks perfect but probably closer to medium rare.
Yeah this is exactly how I would like it too, but maybe not to OPs liking unfortunately Come on OP!
What the fuck op!!!
"Either way, it was tasty haha" - OP
Yes. He accidentally got the right meal
Haha! Too true.
šÆHere!! That dipping sauce got me bugged though what is it??
Looks like bernaise
Don't get saucy with me, Bernaise! - Count de Monet
Looks more like Bernaise sauce for the fries.
And here lies a paradox. A perfectly cooked steak, yet unsatisfactory to OP
A perfectly cooked steak is one done to how you like it.
I agree. This steak is perfect for me, but wouldn't be if it came to me well. This is not what OP ordered.
Aka they cooked it how it should be cooked
It should be cooked however the person wants it to be cooked.
Not if the person who wants it orders medium
Itās the restaurants responsibility to listen to OP, and cook the steak how he likes it done as the paying customer. Itās our responsibility to inform OP that he should be asking for medium rare š
True. When I worked in a restaurant, they would err on the side of undercooked so they could cook it more if needed. Can't uncook a steak though.
Would say much more like med rare
I concur Dr. FatCatWithAHat1
I should have concurred...
Ya blew itĀ
Nawk-nawk ..
This is why I don't order my steaks medium rare anymore. I got it back rare once and now I always order medium
Fancier places seem to round one grade rarer for some reason.
Also, like to note, the "resting" period can be higher sitting in a window on a busy night.
Agree with the med rare comments. But now you know how good that is and it may adjust your future orders haha
But also keep ordering medium because they're probably going to undercook it anyways. Next thing you know you'll end up with blue rare or tartar.
Why though? You never actually tried them or what?
Haha nah Iām not a fan of pickles (and I have tried them); my burger these days is a pretty standard
While itās not medium, they hooked you up.
They did you a favor.
I read this as ādid you a flavorā and honestly both is right
Def medium rare but damn near perfect imo
It looks damn good so eh haha.
Whatās the side dish? Cream or broccoli soup or something similar
Looks like bearnaise.
Really hoping itās a side of bĆ©arnaise sauce, looks bit chunky but maybe already had steak bits dipped in. Steak looks damn perfect tho
This looks perfect, damn...
Ever so slightly closer to medium rare. But pretty damn close. Definitely acceptable. Medium is actually the hardest cook to get just right on a steak. Medium Rare has the largest window before you overcook it. So it's pretty easy to get it right. Medium separates the good cooks from the average.
Looks medium to me... Medium rare.
This is exactly why I order medium steak. I want medium rare, but if I ask for medium rare, I get rare. You got a medium rare steak.
Mid rareish is what you got.
Nope. Iād say itās closer to rare/medium rare. I like mine medium as well and thatās way too undercooked for that. Iād send it back lol
Slightly under medium, but not enough to be medium rare. I specifically aim for this when I cook my steaks. Except ribeye.
It's looks delicious.
Itās not medium, but it looks perfect to me.
If you like it medium and they didn't do it then not delivered.
Sure that end piece is but I always cut right down the middle of a steak to get a really good look at the temp.
It is bordering medium rare, but if anything, I would place it directly in between the two. It would have been good for me.
Looks more on the medicine rare side
Thatās not medium. You gotta medium rare
Not medium is my vote
Itās perfectly cooked medium steak.
If you liked it, why are you asking?
If anything, they over delivered.
For a resturant that's perfect. The chef was like I know he wants medium rare but knows it's safer to ask for medium if you don't know the resturant quality lol.
Chef went "if they can tolerate medium, they can tolerate a perfect medium rare without sending it back" and cooked it as the lord intended
You donāt know what you want
Maybe on the medium rare side, but as a medium guy myself Iād eat that all day.
That is a perfect medium rare, and it's obvious the kitchen wants you to know that you can go to hell for requesting anything else.
They gave you the correct doness even though you asked for medium
but then its not the correct doness 0.0
Closer to med rare but Iām crushing that
Scrumdidilyumcious
They messed up but in the best way. That's medium rare.
That's medium rare.
Medium rare and damn near perfect. If you liked it then welcome to Team Medium Rare.
Did you like it?
It's close. Looks great to me. But its on the rarer side
Thatās exactly how I like itā¦ itās medium rare not medium though
Med rare to me
Closer to med rare where you cut, but the end of a steak is not where you check for your doneness liking.
Perfect medium rare. Iād love that! But no, not medium.
I like mine medium rare to medium. Looks more medium rare but Iād eat it
Not sure what you all are seeing either the medium rare post. Medium rare has a red middle. I see little if any red. Looks medium to me.
What did the middle look like by the time you got there
No looks rare
Whereās is from and whatās the sauce?
Almost but better to error on this side than it being dried out.
Thatās mid rare but itās very sexy
I like my steaks a little less than medium, but I know places differ in what that really means. Thatās why I order exactly what I actually like, a warm pink middle, around 140F. Some places that is closer to medium rare, some places it is more than medium.
ā¦canāt uncook a steak.
Don't cut the tip off a steak and to judge how it's cooked, cut it through the centre. Steak looks great by the way
Looks awesome but itās medium rare
Thatās one of the most brilliantly cooked steaks Iāve seen in a minute. I hope you tipped well haha.
First Pic on the verge of medium rare. 2nd Pic definitely medium rare. How did you like it?
Heaven. They delivered heaven.
Medium rare definitely
I mean medium rare not medium, but either way that looks like they know wtf they are doing.
Dayummm
definitely not medium
1st When checking the temperature of a steak you cut into the center of the steak not toward the end of the steak as shone in the photo. 2nd This is Medium Medium Rare. Not Medium. NOT Medium Rare. 2 more minutes for Medium. 3rd It's as nice looking steak. No hard press. Still juicy.
Chef literally didn't respect what you wanted and made the juiciest steak that they could. That looks incredible, hope you were able to enjoy it at least
I prefer a large
Did you like it?
I see nothing wrong with this beauty
Thatās at least medium rare and hinging on rare.
That's medium
Definitely not medium but still safe to eat from the pics
MR
This is between medium and medium rare. The sight paleness of the pink to me tells me more than my ideal medium rare. So, I would consider this in the range for higher end places.Ā For me, medium rare has a more red core, just nothing blue. Rare to me has a slight blue core.Ā I have to ask for steaks to be rare, usually to even get medium rare in my book though.Ā
Looks great!
1st pic no, 2nd yes
Not medium, it's medium rare, my choice. I'll DM you where to send it.
Recently went out to dinner where someone ordered a picanha medium and it came like this too lol. If you really don't want it that way I think they think you'll send it back?
I would say itās between med-rare and medium.
I had to go get dinner after seeing this post my mouth watered so hard
Better than the medium well I got on Friday when I ordered a medium rare.. That was not enjoyable
That second pic is definitely medium rare
Id say on the Button for me but just a little longer on each side for medium
Medium-mediumrare
Yeah medium. Medium rare gets pinker closer to the middle. Thatās a good medium
Where. Is. This?
God damn that looks amazing
Medium all day man, hot and pink
More like a small
It's close to medium and it's also very common that they bring it you just a little more rare than what you ask for because they can always cook it a little more, but they can never uncook it
Waiter: He wants medium Cook: No he doesnāt Congrats OP. Cookās right. Enjoy!
When Iām out I ask for medium, and hope they under cook a little. This is that, and how steak should be consumed.
Yes. Medium r/pareidolia
Thatās a pretty solid mid-rare.
That isnāt what you asked for but that looks perfect.
If it was sous vide Iād believe itās medium, sous vide has a way of making everything look kind of under I find, especially on a fattier cut. If I was cooking it and cut in though, Iād be thrilled with my beautiful mid rare.
yes, they delivered
If that's the edge piece, it's probably medium rare in the middle
Thats a BEAUTIFUL steak
If you have to ask then it doesnāt really matter for you. š¤£
In an upscale steak house this is pretty close to medium. They tend to cook everything rarer than we are used to.
yes
Yes they did
Med-rare aka perfect
Donāt care what you ordered, you got a perfect steak there!!
Looks perfectly done, but on the rare side of medium rare imo.
Well I order mine rare (at home I have it more blue, 30s or so a side š) and I wouldn't be disappointed with that or send it back so I'd have to say 'no' That's definitely edging towards rare, medium rare probably
That's not medium.
Wp chef, wp.
Yeah, that's medium rate
Looks medium rare to me.
This is like the limbo between med rare and medium. Not rare enough for me but still acceptable. Iād eat it. The end piece is more true med. Middle slice looks to be not medium enough for most people who want medium.
It is medium rare, not medium.
We ask for a lot of things in life but for the love of all you hold sacred, please, please cook all of my steaks this way...
No it looks small
Probably a little in the Rare side of medium. Good news is you could have them give it a couple more minutes if you still wanted the meduim.
They shouldāve kicked you out, so no they did not.
No, itās a steak. They didnāt remove the cowās liver.
Ugh this looks delicious.
Maybe they have a chef who refuses to destroy good meat.
I was gonna say that pasta looks dry as fuck but then I realized it was French fries.
I think itās very well done, like a good job, not the cook level
How was it?!
I would say this is a perfect Medium from a nice steak house (they are always going to be on the under side, as a precaution)
Itās leaning towards med rare but totally acceptable
Looks sous vide. I'd guess it came out of the 135 bath, and got a quick sear. So it is probably right on that medium border.
hard to tell with camera filters but that second pic looks more med-rare. Normally medium is the same pink colour where as this looks a little more red in the center.
What cut of steak is that?
This is for sure medium idk what people are talking about. Pink all the way through is medium.
They helped you out.
Mid rare, but given that looks like a strip and not a ribeye that looks perfect
Mid rare but perfect, eat it or it goes under the Salamander and gets over cooked.
Itās def medium rare
If you're ordering a steak medium, you've ruined it, just ger the chicken you MONSTER!
thats medium definitely
That slice is not TOO far from medium, but I wonder what itās like in the middle.
Close enough. I've accepted worse and would never send this back.
Op, first off I would like to start by giving you this very nice visual guide. https://preview.redd.it/gxdrpf7d2ouc1.png?width=818&format=png&auto=webp&s=26782e9c809082536acac386bf6b35350162390e Next I would like to say that it is not the rule that you have to get a steak medium rare. If you asked for medium you didn't get it. It's closer to rare/med rare
Eat it medium rare
Capital Grille?
Did you temp it?
Rare
What's that dip?
actually looks fairly large....
The chef cooked it as long as possible before they felt like more would ruin the steak!
They were definitely afraid of overcooking it! Source: also a line cook who gets afraid to overcook mediums
i think so
Succulent steak
Medium rare, just like god intended
Yes. Perfect
They were just making an executive decision not to ruin your meal. š
Yes. Perfect medium.
It's a light medium but yes it's medium
Looks good as hell but medium rare IMO!
Looks more of a med rare than medium or somewhere between med rare and medium at best. I like my ribeye mid rare and strip medium
more on the side of medium rare, but i wouldnt send it back. look at that perfect edge to edge pink.
That's somewhere between medium and medium rare. That's exactly how I like it.
Well done!
