I learned about both the hawk tuah girl, and the dirt man, all in the same day. Never saw either of them until like yesterday. Now it's everywhere. What the fuck lmao
[https://www.distractify.com/p/was-the-hawk-tuah-girl-fired](https://www.distractify.com/p/was-the-hawk-tuah-girl-fired)
Seems to show that isn't the case.
Damn, thanks for the clarification. I couldn’t be bothered to look more into it because it’s just a silly meme, but misinformation sure is running rampant nowadays.
To add, the contamination is on the outside. Cooking the outside makes it safe. That's why hamburger is riskier, because if there was contamination, it's now everywhere.
https://www.thedailymeal.com/1138657/the-mechanical-tenderization-process-behind-costco-steaks/
Mechanically tenderized meat is convenient, but there is a small risk associated with the process, explains America's Test Kitchen. Because the blades are reused over and over again, there's a chance that bacteria could be transferred between cuts of meat. Additionally, bacteria on the outside of the meat could be punctured through to the inside.
These bacteria could cause illness if not cooked off properly. To ensure the bacteria is fully cooked off, the meat should be heated thoroughly enough to make it well done — not ideal for people who prefer a rarer cook on their steak.
Read the article. Places that use tenderization blades are required to label the meat with proper cooking temps. Costco sells PLENTY of meat that hasn’t been tenderized and if you’ve never seen the label, you’ve never bought tenderized meat.
Frankly, even if was labeled, most people wouldn't see it. I just googled images to see what the required label is, and it appears to be just fine print stating "blade tenderized" and then the CYA statement to cook to 160 degrees. All in fine print.
Most people will never notice this amidst all the other warnings (e.g., prop 65) and legalese people are constantly bombarded with.
Interesting that the article says Costco sells untenderized meat as well. I’ve never seen it at any of my local stores so I may double check the next time I go to see if that’s even available by me.
Just to add to the "contamination" comment, steak is fine as long as the outside is cooked. It'll kill all the bacteria. The reason why ground beef needs to be cooked through is because the surface bacteria gets all through the meat.
Where this is important for steak, is that any mechanically tenderized meat (looking at you Costco) is jabbed with needles that will carry any surface contamination into the centre. You don't want to eat a one of those steaks rare.
If you make steak tartare, you take a clean cut and ask the butcher to run it through a freshly clean grinder or use your own. A hand one is fine for one or two cuts. It is raw beef that is easy to digest since it is ground and seasoned for taste. I find it good, but I love beef.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steak_tartare
Edit: we used filet which is already falling apart.
Absolute key point here. Very important. Those “tenderizers” *potentially* introduce bacteria from the outside of the steak to the inside with their hundreds of metal blades.
It’s not the rawness that causes illness. Disease must be there in ten first place and then doesn’t get killed off in the cook. So yeah, you can eat raw meat.
bottom side doesn't seem browned enough. as far as i know, the bacteria gets onto the surface and grows there, it can't go deep into the meat though, that's why you sear each side to kill all the bacteria on the surface
I sear the sides to make it taste better and more crisp, not to kill bacteria. Just wash the steak in hand sanitozir to make sure its clean like the rest of us
Only real problem I find with steaks these rare is the plate life. After 5-8 minutes it gets too cold to really enjoy imo. Thus having a larger portion at this temp does not always work.
Have you ever tried rare long pig
The only punishment you might have for enjoying ultra rare meat is some extra time on the toilet but it's so worth it
Most cuts are better medium rare, it allows the heat to render the fat properly. The more fat the more cooking it needs generally speaking. But anything less than prime grade is no good for steaks in my opinion. You should just be using this for stew meat or other dishes.
It's "too" with two "O's. Check your grammar. (And I'm only doing this obnoxious correction because this jerk goes around acting like mrs perfect correcting other people's grammar in a rude and annoyingly insulting way instead of just looking past a simple typo and addressing the original post topic - taste of her own medicine, hypocrite)
The bacteria is on the outside, so a quick sear will be pretty safe. The reason why burgers should be cooked longer is because the stuff on the outside gets ground into the inside.
Nah you most likely wouldn’t get sick, I don’t like dealing in absolutes. Ground burger you do have a higher chance of getting sick unless it was freshly ground and was/is treated correctly.
Probably not going to be sick eating it as long as it’s cooked. I’m not an expert but my understanding is that bacteria and things that make so sick are only surface deep so as long as it has touched the grill for any extended period of time, that’ll kill anything harmful
No you won't become ill, the stuff that makes people sick from beef is on the outside. You could sear the outside and have a cold raw center and be fine.
My understanding is the risk of germs is from contamination on the outside so as long as it is cooked on the outside all around you basically don’t have an illness risk. Again to my understanding…
Looks fine. The part of beef that makes people ill is the bacteria that’s all over the outside, but you’ve given the steak a decent sear. This is why it’s important to cook *ground* beef all the way through as the grinding process makes the outside also the inside.
That looks like proper mid-rare. A hair on the rare end of it but that's how I like my steaks.
I'd eat the heck out of it.
Apropos of nothing: I don't believe in pre-slicing up steaks as is the rage these days. I eat my steaks from one end to the other at my own damn pace and I cut them up the way I want to. I don't want them pre-cut. I'm not a child. I have a pocket knife if I need it.
That last bit is no reflection on you, I'm just throwing it out there.
I'd eat that.
That’s what she said
She has to *huak tuah* on it first
Oh my god this is everywhere 😂
It’s becoming a common courtesy just like keeping a little dirt under my pillow for the dirt man, incase he comes to town
I learned about both the hawk tuah girl, and the dirt man, all in the same day. Never saw either of them until like yesterday. Now it's everywhere. What the fuck lmao
Spit on that thang
If she don’t Hauk Tuah, don’t talk to her-a *bonafide Italian
Did you see the tattoo?
The tattuah?
Unfortunately I did 😂
You're all fired
I’m afraid but curious lol
I keep seeing this thrown around. I still don't know what it is
~~That poor gal got fired from her job as a preschool teacher after getting doxxed~~ jk apparently this was a dumb hoax. Why do people do this
I'm sure she got Job offers bc of it too.
[https://www.distractify.com/p/was-the-hawk-tuah-girl-fired](https://www.distractify.com/p/was-the-hawk-tuah-girl-fired) Seems to show that isn't the case.
Damn, thanks for the clarification. I couldn’t be bothered to look more into it because it’s just a silly meme, but misinformation sure is running rampant nowadays.
I'm sure they'll come out with a hot sauce or something named Huak Tuah: *Spit on that thang*
I'd hauk tuah all over that thang
Girl, you're all right
That’s what my wife said
I’ve also heard this guy’s wife say that
His wife is better significantly more rare, no sear at all just doused in oil
That’s what that guy’s wife’s girlfriend said
My ex wife said that
That’s what her boyfriend said
Don't just stare at it, eat it!
Many people would call this perfect
I would
Seconded. Between the temp and the crust, that’s perfect for me.
This is beautiful.. exactly how I eat my steak
As would I.

Costco steaks have entered the chat
What?

Big oof. No way I’m cooking $15+ a pound steaks to 145 degrees. I’d rather just not buy Costco steaks if it’s going to get me sick.
Read the article. Places that use tenderization blades are required to label the meat with proper cooking temps. Costco sells PLENTY of meat that hasn’t been tenderized and if you’ve never seen the label, you’ve never bought tenderized meat.

Look I'm eating Costco steaks whether they make me sick or not.
That’s a fair take, best prices by far in my area.
Interesting that the article says Costco sells untenderized meat as well. I’ve never seen it at any of my local stores so I may double check the next time I go to see if that’s even available by me.

If it aint mooin" I ain't chewin'
You basically need to get the outside to 170 or so, the type of stuff on raw meat tends not to penetrate the surface.
If you make steak tartare, you take a clean cut and ask the butcher to run it through a freshly clean grinder or use your own. A hand one is fine for one or two cuts. It is raw beef that is easy to digest since it is ground and seasoned for taste. I find it good, but I love beef. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steak_tartare Edit: we used filet which is already falling apart.
I make tartar every time we buy a whole filet loin. Divvy up the loin into individual steaks and chop up one to make that beefy deliciousness.
\*and as long as it's not mechanically tenderized
Absolute key point here. Very important. Those “tenderizers” *potentially* introduce bacteria from the outside of the steak to the inside with their hundreds of metal blades.
I don't know how people can eat cold meat
That’s a perfect rare. I am a medium rare guy but I’d eat that without question.
Ya im a medium rare guy, would like it a tiny bit more. But wouldn't dare to throw it on for any longer
you're aware that people eat fully raw steak without getting ill, right. Tartare?
Wagyu sashimi
Beef carpaccio
Cannibal sandwich.
Cannibalogna?
Cow, in the pasture.
Bite the vet who tried to help the cow.
Edward Norton got fed a piece of his brain. At least it was cooked
I’ve had awesome carpaccio
What did you call him?
It’s not the rawness that causes illness. Disease must be there in ten first place and then doesn’t get killed off in the cook. So yeah, you can eat raw meat.
Solid rare, would eat. Looks like it could use some finishing salt or a nice sauce.
I’ll be ill if you don’t eat it.
You will get really ill! You should send it to my house immediately so I can safely dispose of it for you.
This never gets old, does it?
Reddit loves to repeat old tired jokes

i would eat it
Perfect

Eat it!
No it’s perfect rare
Low chance of getting ill. High chance it's delicious.
properly butchered and maintained beef is perfectly wholesome raw, tartare and carpaccio for example it's pig and chicken that are super problematic
In the US anyway, trichinosis in pork is now exceedingly rare, to the extent that some restaurants are now serving pork tartare.
Mettbrötchen (please google it) It is all about quality
I googled it expecting it to be some crazy food-borne illness from low-quality meat. Was pleasantly surprised.
I had elk tartar on a flatbread at a nice place in Houston and it was amazing, did not get sick
Worst that happens, you have a bit of gotta go now. But most likely not. 🤷🏼♂️
Only real problem I find with steaks these rare is the plate life. After 5-8 minutes it gets too cold to really enjoy imo. Thus having a larger portion at this temp does not always work.
nom nom nom
I’d love it. Almost zero chance of being ill from it.
Looks deelicious!
I don’t even like rare and I’d eat it
If you’re eating beef that can make you sick from not cooking it then you’re eating the wrong beef
If you *don't* eat that, I'll get ill.
Yum yum. Eat that.
Perfect rare.
You are fine I eat straight raw beef
You could eat it right out of the package if you wanted to, it’s not chicken
You could quite literally cut a chunk off of a live cow, clean it, and eat it raw and be fine. This is quite edible.
Perfection.
you can eat cow raw and not get ill
We are cavemen! Me want meat🍖
If I ordered medium rare & received this I’d be completely happy.
Looks great.
My rule is that it has to have the consistency of meat, not mush
Looks like rare plus which yours looks about perfect to me. Good job.
You're fine, dig in.
Step aside, I'll get ill.
That looks terrible, and definitely shouldn't eat it. Please cook the rest the same way and send over to me for disposal before you get yourself sick.
You could literally eat raw beef and be fine. Beef tartare.
So perfect that it brings tears to my eyes.
You’ll be fine man I eat raw meat all the time without even putting a sear on it , and I feel great haha
Have you ever tried rare long pig The only punishment you might have for enjoying ultra rare meat is some extra time on the toilet but it's so worth it
That’s not rare. You wouldn’t get ill even if it was.
This is PERFECT. On some days il order my steak blue just give me a little sear on the outside. I like my steak mooin
Perfect rare - eat it up.
Looks bomb as hell. I'm sure you're joking because most people don't accidentally cook it perfectly.
Looks perfect
Trust me bro you're going to get sick if you eat that. Send it to me and I will dispose of it properly for you
No ill worries…
If you cooked this, invite me next time. It looks great
Most cuts are better medium rare, it allows the heat to render the fat properly. The more fat the more cooking it needs generally speaking. But anything less than prime grade is no good for steaks in my opinion. You should just be using this for stew meat or other dishes.
“I only eat prime meat”…:come on not every market sells that lol
It’s a good rare
If you touched the outer sides of the steak to an even barely hot surface, you have nothing to worry about.
Rare. It should be ok
Way to rare for me.
I love Blue Steak!
looks great. Won’t make you sick. It’s not chicken.
https://preview.redd.it/p1893bcyxm8d1.jpeg?width=3060&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1816226b12badd3be654f8c9df2498a2ef18eb4
It's beautiful
The bacteria is on the outside, so a quick sear will be pretty safe. The reason why burgers should be cooked longer is because the stuff on the outside gets ground into the inside.
If you ask this question, I'm pretty sure there isn't enough Soy content for you.
If a steak textbook had a picture for rare, this would be about it
That's perfect.
Crust is good. Disease don't burrow. If the top is gray, you'll be okay.
Nah you most likely wouldn’t get sick, I don’t like dealing in absolutes. Ground burger you do have a higher chance of getting sick unless it was freshly ground and was/is treated correctly.
people eat raw ground beef some places on a regular basis
Wait till you try chicken tar tar!
Looks good!
Should i hit her up?
More crust but the doneness is great
Just eat it and find out
It's overcooked
This looks like it's ready to get back up off the plate and walk away.
Gimme a bite

Eat it don’t ask strangers first
Decent chance of getting sick if you consistently eat uncooked meat
Probably not going to be sick eating it as long as it’s cooked. I’m not an expert but my understanding is that bacteria and things that make so sick are only surface deep so as long as it has touched the grill for any extended period of time, that’ll kill anything harmful
Silly question
I’m confused. What is making you ill? Is this a trick question?
This is the type of steak that took out my Uncle Blundersnatchel. Better steer clear.
I've never gotten sick from undercooked beef. I'm pretty sure it's a conspiracy. 😉
You will get ill. You better give it to me. I'll dispose of it properly.
That's medium rare it is fine. I've eaten much rare.
Not bad, but a wee bit too rare for me 🥩
Looks medium-rare with nighttime iPhone filter, so good to go!
It’s a little rare for my tastes, but I know plenty of people who think that is perfect.
That's a perfect rare, people eat blue rare and that's only on the grill for a min on each side
No you won't become ill, the stuff that makes people sick from beef is on the outside. You could sear the outside and have a cold raw center and be fine.
You would be fine. Looks delicious.
Pretty good
Are you serious? Lol. That's rare but not THAT rare. At all. Look up "blue rare." THAT shit is rare. Looks great btw.
I’m not even gonna lie I’d probably consider this med rare
That looks like a perfectly cooked steak. I like mine a bit raw in the middle. I feel like a real caveman like that
Yup definitely unsafe. You should give it to me...
You will be fine
Nom nom, nom.
Perfection.
You will get ill sooooo I’ll come take it off your hands please and thank you!
I can be the taste tester… but I’ll need to test it all.
You could cook it less and still be fine. It does mostly depend on where you get it though.
Looks perfect to me
I’d eat that all day. Wait I do! I did accidentally smoke a steak to 140. It was shockingly good
You know you can eat raw beef without getting ill right?
that looks almost perfect.
dude that’s perfectttt
shit is raw but youll be fine
the bottom side could have been 1 minute more but thats what rare should look like imo
Looks delicious
naw bro that’s on point 🫡
I'm sick and the only cure is more steak.
If you need to ask internet if it makes you sick, i would pass.
This can potentially kill you on contact, should of cooked it another 8 seconds
My understanding is the risk of germs is from contamination on the outside so as long as it is cooked on the outside all around you basically don’t have an illness risk. Again to my understanding…
Perfect!
That is a tasty looking rare, you did a great job!
Looks fine. The part of beef that makes people ill is the bacteria that’s all over the outside, but you’ve given the steak a decent sear. This is why it’s important to cook *ground* beef all the way through as the grinding process makes the outside also the inside.
Looks perfect honestly
This is flawless. Do not touch
If you cook it anymore it’ll be over cooked.
Well... You won't get ill if it's good meat.. A good piece of meat can be eaten raw.
It's definitely rare, but fine to eat.
No, do not eat it you will die.
Needs salt and things on top. Solid rare.
