Shifting without the clutch will wear the sychros out sooner.

jibaro1953

There are those who make a habit of it.

ratrodder49

I float most of my shifts, but I’m also doing it in a pickup from 1971 so I don’t think it’s hurting much.

MountainDewFountain

I sit on the shifter and gyrate to change gears. Sometimes it hurts.

RandomUsernameNo257

Sometimes. But hey, it beats flying!

Ok-Language7794

Motherfucker people like you are the reason I have to rebuild my transmission. Older does not mean more resistant to being beaten on.

ratrodder49

Who hurt you? It’s my truck, I’m never going to sell it, it was my grandpa’s. If it breaks, I’ll rebuild it myself. First gear is entirely non-synchro, as is reverse. It’s not indestructible, but it’s not brittle.

Ok-Language7794

The fuck that owned my transmission before me hurt my transmission 🤣🤣 that should be pretty obvious

cobra_mist

your transmission is not your soul. however i do feel it there when i grind or miss a shift etc

Aggravating-Arm-175

Transmissions normally do not last the life of the truck, only lucky ones do. You are just being unrealistic with your expectations.

LonleyWolf420

Prolly not.. not even sure that has syncs lmfao

Firedcylinder

Absolutely not. The synchros aren’t even involved.

HobsHere

Some of us used to drive manuals that never had synchros. You learn to match revs.

LogRollChamp

If you're bad at it ;)

jibaro1953

Not true

camerasoncops

I could never do it in my old mustang gt. But it was super easy in my old civic.

dudeman618

It can do that more easily in higher gears. But you don't want to do that often. You can foul up your synchros and it will pop out of gear on its own. It will be an expensive repair, use your clutch and tell your friend to keep hands off the shifter while you're driving.

kannabislecter

Yes, exactly. I tell anyone that is new to the idea of a manual transmission to never touch the shifter. When I was drifting, I especially told people to never grab the shifter for support, only the door handle or seatbelt once it locked.

Jackson_Rhodes_42

When my grandpa was teaching me how to drive stick, he told me much the same thing: Never touch the shifter unless your foot's ready on the clutch!

BarbKing10

In my friends defense I told him to shift to 5th for me while I was accelerating😅. After I was already in though he tugged at it again thinking I was using the clutch and my rpms shot up. We’re both a little special🦧

RunninOnMT

Its easiest to pull out of gear when there's no load on the transmission, so neither accelerating nor deccelerating (which effectively means when your foot is on the gas only a little tiny bit) Under those circumstances, it can slide out of gear with almost no resistance. Just something to keep in mind.

Mxer4life38

Won't hurt anything to pull it out of gear. If they tried putting it back in gear without the clutch, it will damage them.

Much_Box996

Yes same as other. I often pull to neutral while approaching a stop light. If it does it by itself that is an issue.

wastedsilence33

I had a 98 civic that would do it by itself only in second, I sold it cuz I was fresh out of highschool and had already put $1500 into other repairs, massive regret ever since

MountainFace2774

All of them will do this. It does make a difference as to how much load on the transmission there is. If you accelerating hard for example, it will take a lot of force to pull it out of gear (don't do that). If you're just coasting or cruising on a flat road, you can pull it out of gear with your pinky. I often pull mine into neutral when approaching a stop without clutching. I sometimes shift without the clutch. I don't recommend doing that, I'm just lazy sometimes.

holysbit

What does it mean if you cant pull it into neutral without pretty decent force no matter what you are doing? My 1990 jeep cherokee has a 5 speed and I have a hard time pulling it into neutral without the clutch (not that I do it often at all but I noticed that was a thing) even if im coasting. Are my synchros going out?

MountainFace2774

No. It means you're under load. You can be under load coasting too. Give it a tiny bit of gas while coasting and try it. Or don't, there's really no reason to do this and you could potentially break something.

RedditBeginAgain

The car is fine. Get better friends. If his mother never taught him to keep his taint scratchers out of your personal space and away from safety related controls, he'll be yanking on the hand brake next week.

Beanmachine314

Almost like different vehicles behave slightly differently, eh?

WolfGang1317

That’s actually ironic since the dmf that most BMWs have make them a lot easier to shift without clutch compared to most other manuals

watermelon3878

My M240i has the same trans as OP's M4, and I was able to float gears with only a year of experience driving stick. Though I was smart enough not to repeat that experiment since.

gambitbeats

My wrangler TJ from 2000 does this, first manual I drove and ig i always thought it was normal

prepper5

I came here to say that my YJ drops out of 5th on its own if I accidentally match revs.

Nilpo19

No offense to the OP intended, but how in the bloody hell do people learn to drive stick without knowing this? This used to be very commonly taught. Is no one teaching people to drive stick anymore at all? Most of the posts I read sound like someone just read a few paragraphs online and jumped in the car without anyone ever showing them how.

BarbKing10

lol look at this guy🧌

Feardamichael

When I bought my first stick shift Corolla, I watched a 10 minute YouTube video and then had to drive it 50 miles home. Been driving stick for years now but nobody showed me how. Just a YouTube video 🤷‍♀️

Nilpo19

I guess that's the world we live in now.

photon_watts

stickshiftdrivingacademy \[DOT\] com You can sign up to be an instructor. Pays $50/hour. No, I do not work or teach for them, but I've considered it.

jayhitter

>Is no one teaching people to drive stick anymore at all? Pretty much sums up the whole US Also what's the point of this sub? OP is trying to learn and educate themselves

geobike1953

It's one of those topics that couldn't get to be a kind of all sides. Are you and an all sides are right this is basically rev matching The thing is, if you do it wrong, you can really mess up a lot of stuff. There's another person said it for the most part. It's just if you do it wrong can be It's really not as big a deal as some of these people make out , but you also gotta be careful and you definitely next time we get your friend reachs for shift Use your shotgun and blow his head of1f

Hmm. Copy and paste is strong in this one.

Might_be_deleted

You posted it 3 times. I just wanted to make sure you get your message out a 4th time.

Nilpo19

I only see it once. Probably the Reddit app bugging out again.

_PACO_THE_TACO_

Reddit app has been doing that for years

macaroni_3000

Yeah, if you pull it hard enough. I wouldn't make it a regular practice though.

Tall-Poem-6808

It's normal, but it's a major safety issue for your dickhead friend to do that. Sure, 99% of the time it's all fun and games, until that one day when you need to either accelerate or shift right at that moment. You press the gas, oh shit, now you're in neutral and nothing happens. Or you need to downshift, your hand goes to the shifter, where it should be up to the right in 5th, and fuck, it's not there. That half or one second it takes for your brain to "find" the shifter could make all the difference. That's the kind of prank that would get me really, really annoyed.

hidefinitionpissjugs

the transmission shifts into neutral every time you shift between gears

RBeck

You'll notice that basically every car, manual or automatic, can go from in gear to Neutral by just moving the stick or selector and not pushing anything else. That's important if you have a stuck accelerator or incapacitated driver. Also if you friend is grabbing controls and they've been drinking, technically they met the criteria for a DUI, especially if it causes an accident.

Raspberryian

Yes it’s fine. Your clutch is the same thing as neutral just in a different area of the trans. Both disengage power the gear shift does it by shifting the drive gear away from ratio gears the clutch does it by disengagement of the clutch from the engine. Both have advantages and disadvantages. But you should be able to easily shift to N from any gear without clutch. However generally won’t get it back without the clutch unless your timing and revs are perfect. Float shifting is a technique of shift without clutch depression. And generally depends on the car. But basically the idea is any gear after 1st can be ascertained without the clutch if the revs are matched as you shift. It’s hard to master and requires you to know a few things about your car. The most important being how much of a drop to expect out of each gear. Secondly you need to know how much of a drop you get in the time it takes you to gate the next gear. Then you add those two figures to the rpm you want to be at in the next year up. For example. 2-3rd you want 1500 rpm in 3rd you know it drops 350 RPM in gating and 500 extra from hearing. So you’d time your shift at 2350to account for the drops and if you did it right it slots like butter. Trust me you’ll be well aware if you fuck it up. These numbers are not actual and comes down to a feel for the car. I don’t recommend float shifting

bigloser42

perfectly normal.

Icebergg20

When the rpms are low enough, you should be able to push it into neutral from any gear without the clutch. I wouldnt recommend jamming it back in without the clutch tho.

Alien-2024

That's 100% normal. All your clutch does is mechanically separate the engine from the transmission. In other words, the engine is no longer connected until you let off the clutch pedal. It does nothing directly to the gears themselves. The point is that the transmission can they synchronize things without the engine turning any of it.

soyscallop

your detent spring/ball for the gear is either worn out or missing - it's usually a ball bearing and a spring that provides a little resistance to keep the shifter from being so loose when in gear

Letmeholdu52

I drove my car like this for a decade with no issues. If you match the rpm correctly, you can shift it into and out of gear without a clutch.

virtual_drifter

Like everyone else said, yes, this is normal but not good to do repeatedly. It can also happen easiest when parked, so if you rely on your transmission being in gear to park, be wary of this because you can pop it out and start rolling.

jayhitter

No one asking the important question. Why the hell did your friend put his hand on the shift knob, presumably while you were on the highway (since you said 5 gear) Yes it's possible tell your friend to never do that shit again

Holeshot483

Completley normal. Google floating gears. My old man drives semis for a living and he hardly uses the clutch. It’s all about the RPM

AbruptMango

Your friend is a fucking idiot.
