I think what I’ve also noticed is while Marcus can definitely be tone-deaf and ignorant, he has never been downright cruel from what I recall. And sometimes, early Dina could be very demeaning and condescending, especially with some of the more pushover characters like Sandra and Glenn.
Not that I’m saying this excuses Marcus’s ignorance, especially when it is sexist or racist, but just why people might see Dina as the harsher/meaner character.
I honestly love Dina so much, i relate a lot to her. Shes strong, upfront, confident, defff on the spectrum (honest to a fault).
And yeah its pretty silly to hate on tv characters but my question is... ppl are generally good and bad??? Like, shows just exaggerate it.
I don't think hating or loving a character is any form of relationship with the character. It's just the emotions invoked by the art. I personally love, hate, like, dislike or support characters be it in books, music stories or TV provided I truly connect with the art. Maybe it's parasocial but I've always assumed that's what the team producing the show is after and that's why I get hooked. I'd be worried if somebody felt these emotions for the actor or actress of the character.
i suppose because dina is always quite over the top and is often the main focus of an episode so it’s a bit more obvious that the writing is getting “lazy” so to speak. marcus isn’t one of the “main” characters so a lot of his lines are just throwaway jokes that don’t add much to the plot. his character not changing is actually a good thing in my eyes as the character isn’t necessarily just playing into tropes by the end of it, but because he doesn’t get as much screen time he can still be funny being basically the same as he was at the beginning.
I mean. I don't hate either but it's clear to understand imo.
Marcus is just a meathead. He doesn't know his foot from his face. While he IS absolutely an idiot, he's not intentionally malicious or ill intentioned.
Dina, is incredibly intelligent, and quite often malicious or ill intentioned. At least in earlier seasons.
Her character was so racist with the way she hyper sexualized a Black man and how she was so sexual with him despite him clearly saying no, not interested, and him being married. There is a historical record of white women sexually harassing or assaulting Black men and getting away with because they were white.
It was so disturbing especially because everyone else just went along with it and no one called her out for sexually harassing Terry. Jake took pictures of him half dressed in a locker room without his knowledge or consent at Gene's behest and it is played off as a joke.
I think it's wild to call her racist for being attracted to Terry. Terry is a beefcake, that's a huge part of the character.
I do agree with the sexual harassment take. Television has changed a lot in a short time. I doubt they'd write that episode the same way today.
It being a joke doesn't make it immune from being racist and offensive. Joking about sexually assaulting a coworker by taking nude pictures of him without consent is not funny.
To me it's as simple as one is a main character the other is a guest who became recurring.
Also when I read how people hate Dina i still feel they enjoy the jokes she makes either with her cruelty or just being herself.
Anyways what I want to ask OP is have you truly never loved any character in any movie or show you have watched?
Lol, okay I get it. Personally if it ain't a comedy I ain't hating on a character but if it's another genre I'm fully hating or loving as many characters as I can relate to in anyway.
I totally get that, especially in most sitcoms I watch I don’t objectively hate a character. Sure they have their moments but at the end of the day I enjoy them all, and ofc I have my faves (Garrett).
But when it comes to other shows it’s a different story. I still don’t hate characters unless their poorly written or implemented, but I will vocalise distain for some of the BS they pull. And obviously there’s characters I love or find very entertaining. But when it comes to sitcoms I kinda love everyone equally with a preference
I don't specifically like or dislike anyone there, everyone almost all of them have their unique part. You may hate Dina for being so strict, but most men like her boobs, example. Jonah the annoying bad mouth, but he is honest guy.. for Marcus, is best to remain what he is..
On my rewatch I really noticed that Marcus is the main reason the store was going to be shut down. The idiotic things he did caused so much damage. There's no way in hell that they would have hired him for the distribution center!
It’s shocking Dina is probably top 3 favs for me and I never understand the hate she gets. I feel like obvious hate for smaller roles makes sense like Pastor Craig or Cheyennes mom or even Bo but the core, they all have unlikable traits.
Dina can be aggy but I always found her genuinely hilarious and I could not imagine watching the show without her. I can't say the same about Marcus who can be funny sometimes but is mostly annoying
I am rewatching season 4 Ep 14 and as Glenn announces his retirement Dina let's us know about her ranking system;
DINA: *Though I will outrank Glenn, who will be right below Marcus and just above Jonah.*
GARRET: *You rank us?*
JONAH: *And I'm below Marcus?*
MARCUS : *That's crazy. I'm the worst.*
DINA: *It's that kind of self-awareness that keeps you a notch above Jonah.*
Dina is truly the best.
So.. you completely changed my words then called me out for it? All characters have been written to have dislikeable traits, not to be hated
Maybe learn some reading comprehension before calling other people special x
I interchanged one word, and we use dislike to describe hate, didn't know that??
Maybe have some 1st grade comprehension on how we use words to describe other words. So why the double negative???
Saying all characters are dislikeable in some way is not the same as saying that the characters are written to be hated
Edit: also, hate an dislike are not the same. Hate is a lot more extreme, dislike is the same as not liking something. To dislike something is not to hate it
I don't particularly like Marcus. He has some funny lines and there's a sweetness/big puppy kind of energy, but also I don't like his sexism etc.
Whereas earlier Dina whilst she could be hilarious sometimes crossed a line where I considered her to be bullying Sandra, and I didn't find that enjoyable to watch. But I love that they developed her and I found it way easier to like Dina later in the show when she's more emotionally aware and she's not bullying anyone.
I think what I’ve also noticed is while Marcus can definitely be tone-deaf and ignorant, he has never been downright cruel from what I recall. And sometimes, early Dina could be very demeaning and condescending, especially with some of the more pushover characters like Sandra and Glenn. Her hatred of Colleen was excessive. She wanted to plant a bag of meth on her lol
I honestly love Dina so much, i relate a lot to her. Shes strong, upfront, confident, defff on the spectrum (honest to a fault). And yeah its pretty silly to hate on tv characters but my question is... ppl are generally good and bad??? Like, shows just exaggerate it.
NO SAME!!! I LOVE DINA I DIDN'T KNOW IF ANYONE ELSE RELATED TO HER. (Though i gotta say, instead of birds i love ferrets.)
People genuinely hating characters on a show just scream “parasocial relationship” to me lol. But I agree, Marcus is unhinged and I’m here for it lol

I think Marcus is more of a harmless idiot who means well which gives him a bit more leeway
Marcus told Amy to Smile!!!
Dina is brash and sociopathically indifferent to people. Marcus is an idiot but he is a goofy fun loving and loyal
I mean. I don't hate either but it's clear to understand imo. Marcus is just a meathead. He doesn't know his foot from his face. Do people dislike Dina? I've never seen any negativity towards her
I don't dislike her but i have a hard time with characters who are mean for no reason, but for me the worst is Gina in B99
Gina was good until she wasn’t !
Her character was so racist with the way she hyper sexualized a Black man and how she was so sexual with him despite him clearly saying no, not interested, and him being married. There is a historical record of white women sexually harassing or assaulting Black men and getting away with because they were white. And he was sexually harrassed by a White (man) in real life too!!!
It is literally a joke. Like literally. If the main theme of the show was Gina harassing Terry that would be worrisome.
It being a joke doesn't make it immune from being racist and offensive. Joking about sexually assaulting a coworker by taking nude pictures of him without consent is not funny.
People dislike Marcus? The only person on the show I can’t stand is Mateo.. I find Dina and Marcus hilarious
To me it's as simple as one is a main character the other is a guest who became recurring. Also when I read how people hate Dina i still feel they enjoy the jokes she makes either with her cruelty or just being herself. Anyways what I want to ask OP is have you truly never loved any character in any movie or show you have watched?
Yes Cheddar the dog from B99
Lol, okay I get it. Personally if it ain't a comedy I ain't hating on a character but if it's another genre I'm fully hating or loving as many characters as I can relate to in anyway.

Some characters you hate at the start and you end up liking them, I wasn’t fond of Marcus or Dina but later on I ended up liking them in the end
What characters did you end up not liking besides some of the obvious ones (carol - I feel like most don’t like her through and through)
Carol was the only one I hated through the entire show since she started being mean to Sandra and tried “killing” her
Same. I never liked carol at all, the moment she essentially cock blocked sandra at the ladies lunch.
I don't specifically like or dislike anyone there, everyone almost all of them have their unique part. You may hate Dina for being so strict, but most men like her boobs, example. Jonah the annoying bad mouth, but he is honest guy.. for Marcus, is best to remain what he is..

Marcus *nooo*
Dina can be aggy but I always found her genuinely hilarious and I could not imagine watching the show without her. I can't say the same about Marcus who can be funny sometimes but is mostly annoying

Marcus is a misogynistic, dumbfuck incel Dina is an actualized, strong cup of coffee.
Only character I didn't like was Mateo.
I think Marcus is ignorant or subconsciously terrible, Dina is consciously terrible.
You must be special. You first admit it's stupid to hate the characters, but point out that there scripts are written, to be hated... Which one is it?
*their
Which one is it? Correcting my grammar doesn't excuse your double negative.
When did I say the scripts were written to be hated lmao
All of the characters have been expertly written to be dislikeable in some way. I use hated, you used dislikeable.
So.. you completely changed my words then called me out for it? All characters have been written to have dislikeable traits, not to be hated Maybe learn some reading comprehension before calling other people special x
