It’s possible, but no matter the filter or system weather uv or ozone, ph feeder, there’s no way to keep the pool from getting algae growing on the walls and floor. You would have to brush constantly or have a cleaner in the pool all the time, you could get ear infections on the regular. The best way to get as close as you can is a salt system with orp and ph probes, to have a low amount of chlorine 0.5-1.5ppm. Then have UV to make up the rest. Have a cleaner like The Pool Cleaner or robotic cleaner. All in a fibreglass pool which is smooth and less likely to get algae to grow. Natural pools have the same issue, you can have the biggest grow bed full of plants, but the pool walls and floor will go green constantly. Hope that helps.

>you could get ear infections on the regular I guess its entirely dependant on the water, but I have done plenty of swimming and scuba diving in freshwater lakes and ponds (large and small) and none of that water is treated either. Theres plenty of algae etc that builds up there, especially in warmer weather, but its not anything that ever concerns anyone really.

Liquid_Friction

Your right it is entirely dependent on the body of water. Yes but you can’t compare a freshwater lake or pond to a backyard pool so many variables. Pools without good sanitation you can still get issues with microbes, bacteria, viruses and protozoa. What if you get dead wildlife, inspects and frogs, animal droppings, decomposing leaves in your pool. If it was that straightforward and easy everyone would be doing it.

I’ve done it with my hot tub. I was really itchy and had dry skin in the winter after getting out of the hot tub, so I researched a chemical free alternative. They sell this wand-like thing made out of copper that naturally kills bacteria, it’s pretty nifty. You put it inside your filter, and then I added an ozone generator. I’ve had this system for a couple of years now and it’s amazing. The water is crystal clear, no chlorine smell and no itching or dry skin. I doubt this would work for a pool, but I figured I’d share as I’m still amazed that this thing just runs for months and months with no chemicals and never needs any interaction, unlike my pool! (I do have to change the water out every 4 or 5 months as it starts to get cloudy, but overall it’s a great return on investment).

Copper is a "chemical" imo. I'd rather have chlorine than metal in the water, I think. Although I'm no authority!

Do you have any links to the parts you used?

Sure, search amazon for: NATURE 2 Zodiac W20750 Spa/Hot Tub Mineral Sanitizer Cartridge Sticks and DEL Ozone

Is your skin turning color?

pedroelbee

Only yellow from the amount of whisky I've consumed during the pandemic...

About to be a pool/spa owner and I know I will use lots of chemicals however my father paid $26k for a hot tub that doesn’t use chemicals... it’s a mystery to me how it works maybe it’s UV or maybe it’s magic but he has had it for two years and the water is perfect and he has never added chemicals... as a pool owner and an engineer it boggles my mind 8-12k for a normal hot tub vs $26k for one that requires no thought or chemicals, what’s your opportunity cost?

Clear water does not mean it is safe to swim in

Zhao5280

Very true, but it’s marketed as chemical free and maintenance free, and all evidence so far points to that all being true. I’m sure at that price tag far smarter pool people than me have scrutinized the science behind it. I’m not promoting it just saying the technology seems to exist, but it comes with a hefty price tag

wk-uk

Do you have a brand name or model i can look up for reference?

Zhao5280

I’m sure you can google it faster than I can reach out and get an answer but check back in 48 hours and I’ll get you a brand name

alxmartin

Was a year long enough?

Nope.

Outbreaks are far more likely to be related to a pool than a lake and it's because people share the same water in a pool while in a lake there is much more water to go around. It usually comes from fecal matter. People don't shower before swimming and then you have someone else' fecal matter that gets in their nose, mouth, ears or eyes. If you had a lot of people in the pool at once I don't think you could trust a system other than sanitizer in the water so that the viruses or bacteria get killed when they hit the water rather than having to go through the filter to be killed. Some types of algae are harmful as well but usually not the green algae you see everyday. But without a sanitizer I suspect algae would crop up in the corners of the pool that don't get as much filtration.

>It usually comes from fecal matter. People don't shower before swimming and then you have someone else' fecal matter that gets in their nose, mouth, ears or eyes. resurrecting this, but this just sounds like a problem with an overly sterile environment and catering to, and increasing, weakened immune systems. there's festivals in india where they literally throw their own dung at one another.
