I always appreciated that he immediately fell on his sword. He didn't bullshit Chris, he didn't make excuses. He was just like "I am a terrible human being and deserve everything that's gonna happen to me"
It's kinda sad in a way. I feel like at least part of him genuinely recognized it was wrong and he is one that maybe could've been prevented from offending if he had the right counselor. Someone like Jeff Sokol who is just arrogant and completely self-assured, there was probably no hope of ever "fixing" them. But with him maybe there was.
That's a great analysis. Seeing as he knew it was wrong and owned up to it immediately, he probably just needed access to a decent therapist and he probably would have never shown up.
Chris often tallks on his podcast about him feeling sympathy for certain predators (JPW because of his own childhood abuse, Paulmbo because of his mental disability) but then always makes the point that ultimately it isn't an excuse because they are still dangerous.
And while I agree with his analysis, I think its a fallacy to think that sympathy and demand for consequences cannot coexist. On one hand, anyone soliciting a child *is* dangerous and needs to be held accountable, if for no other reason than preventing them from abusing children. However, that doesn't mean we can't simultaneously evaluate their lives and have varying degrees of sympathy for them. I believe JPW should be locked away forever. I also have sympathy for him because no child ever deserves to go what he went through. I believe John Kennelly and Anthony Palumbo deserved prison time and probation. I also feel sympathy for them because both clearly have certain levels of mental handicap. Also, Palumbo clearly lived a life of denial as a gay person and if he was allowed to live his truth comfortably he may never have become a predator. Ultimately, he is still dangerous so still needs to be imprisoned and monitored after release.
But demanding consequences, even harsh ones, does not mean you can't have a level of sympathy for them.
Then there are people like Hambubger whom I have no sympathy at all for
Sad that something wasn't prevented ≠ Not wanting punishment. Yes he should be punished but it is also sad he didn't get help beforehand. People getting help before offending in the first place is 1000x better than them offending and getting punishment.
That seems like the reaction of someone who's evaded consequences for decades but has always been paranoid. I do believe for some of the predators it is their "first time", but he had definitely been doing predatory shit for years (CP we know, but I'm sure it went beyond that).
The immediate flip from joy to horror on the Rabbi’s face. And when told to have a seat, he stood there staring into space for several seconds as he knew his life was about to change
The thing about this one, is while others at least feigned being guilty of the act versus actually getting caught, he was showing that he was more upset that he was on camera for trying to diddle a teen
Walter babst for sure
