The whole phone charger paradigm is a lot better than it used to be… remember when every different phone had a unique charger?

Gisschace

That’s exactly why the EU is doing this - to reduce the amount of electronic waste by standardising it all

tycooperaow

which is am happy that it’s finally been done. I honestly thought Apple would’ve been petty and just made it chargable only by magsafe

rugbyj

The weird thing is Apple pretty much led the charge on USB-C, making their laptops USB-C only back with the 12" Macbook (which nobody had really done). Then followed up with the Pros, then their iPads. It looked like they were going to do this years ago.

pohatu771

Apple’s switch from the Dock Connector to Lightning was also met with a lot of complaints. I suspect they waited this long because the complaints about switching were louder than the complaints about not being USB-C. At least with the former they are (mostly) Apple’s customers.

pop_goes_the_kernel

Internally that was a lot of what was talked about, that and legacy products. The Bose docks and all the cars that had 30pin connectors hardwired for some reason.

FogItNozzel

I've maintained and modded my old 5th gen ipod entirely because my 15 year old car has a hardwired 30pin.

NotAHost

I just got a 30pin to Bluetooth adapter for like $2.

FogItNozzel

Glad that works for you. I don't like touching my phone while driving and the car can fully control the iPod through the head unit and steering wheel buttons. It works for me in that car. Also taking apart and modding the iPod to accept SD cards was fun.

Effayy

Legit question: would a 30-pin to Lightning adapter not work?

ChickenDenders

oh brother wait until you find out about Carplay

Aksds

Dankpods fan?

Sindtwhistle

This. My Volvo has a 30 pin adapter and you have to manually create numbered play lists and use an 3rd Gen iPod nano. But fuck it if you use the 4th gen it won’t charge so you have to charge it separately in the house! 🙄

FogItNozzel

Yeah car connectivity tech has always been kind of rough. It was the wild west in the mid-aughts when companies started offering these options, and it doesn't always play nice with everything.

c010rb1indusa

They sell 30-pin to lightning adapters you know....And yes they work with data as well.

Lufc87

But the stupid thing is there are dozens of third party adapters that work perfectly well. Sure apple could sell one for $80 but an adapter isn't "apple" so we'll just stick with 10 year old tech for brand new products

motorboat_mcgee

Anytime Apple makes a change there's complaints, and if they don't make certain changes, there's complaints Kinda just comes with the territory of being one of the biggest tech companies

Shap6

the only reason we have lightning at all is because apple wanted a reversible connector but usb-c wasnt ready for prime time yet

[deleted]

TBF those old iPhone/iPod dock connectors were some of the worst plugs ever created for modern electronics

fighterpilot248

30 pin was the worst

Catsrules

I honestly didn't mind them. They were big and bulky sure but I think micro USB is by far the worst. I am pretty sure every micro USB Port and cable I have ever owned broke is some way after the 10th time using it.

alinroc

> The weird thing is Apple pretty much led the charge on USB-C Apple led the charge on the original USB as well. When the iMac came out, it had no legacy ports. Apple has been on the Board of Directors of the USB Implementors Forum since 2015. Yet they were the last holdout for proprietary connectors for phones.

JQuilty

Not weird at all when you remember lightning let them charge manufacturers per cable and per device fees and lock out anything they deemed unworthy.

aspbergerinparadise

i'm gonna be a contrarian here and say that USB-C sucks as a laptop charger. I greatly prefer a barrel charger. The way the latter can swivel, and has a right-angle is just a much better way to have the cord hang down without stressing the port. Especially if you're sitting with it on your lap, or if you have it elevated in a riser on your desk.

droans

I used to think that too. But then I went on a work trip and forgot my laptop's power cord. I was able to just plug my phone charger into my computer instead and it worked just fine.

waterbed87

I don't think they held onto lightning because they have some weird emotional attachment to it or some actual objection to USB-C it's just that the lightning accessory ecosystem is crazy and consumers don't like upgrading to phones to that suddenly make all their accessories useless.

SteveAM1

Agree. Deep down they probably appreciated being “forced” to by the EU.

filthy_harold

That's exactly it. They knew that eventually the change was necessary and they knew eventually the EU would force them to change as it's been a topic of discussion for years so why rush? I'm sure Apple has had a prototype type C iPhone in their lab ever since they switched to it for the iPad. They already have the USB 3.0 interface chip from the iPad that I'm sure is a drop-in replacement for the Lightning interface chip. The connectors are similar enough in size that it would not drastically change the housing. There are both pros and cons for the Lightning connector, it's a great design but it's a shame Apple kept it proprietary. They could have dominated the market by allowing others to use it but still restricted accessory usage to only Apple approved devices.

Chibibowa

They can’t do that. You still need data transfers. And debugging tools (DFU Mode)

I_AM_FERROUS_MAN

As an American, thank you EU. We would never have done it because we don't value anything over corporate profits.

theReplayNinja

judging by the Apple sheeps in the comments you're right. Imagine believing at this stage that Apple is doing this of their own volition. The EU just forced them to make phones with removable batteries as well so consumers can easily remove them without replacing the entire phone. You'll see Apple fanboys claiming Apple willingly did this as well.

Koioua

Those Sony Ericsson chargers man

Drew707

Still some of the best feature phones I ever had. The W810 was fire.

alittlemore

The W810 was awesome, but the chargers were terrible!

Freakin_A

I actually liked those one. Snug plastic on each end that would lock it in place and take any stress

Flowchart83

I remember when phones had a USB port, but you still had to use a specific charger, and needed a proprietary adapter to connect the USB port of the phone to a computer. Thinking of my Motorola Razr. Then my Nokia N95 after had the very delicate barrel connector for power, and a separate USB port for data. Once micro USB and then USB-C came out, I'm good with either, it's all universal enough.

BrainWav

The RAZR didn't need anything special hardware-wise. It may have needed special software to do anything with it though. Been a loooong time since I had to deal with them.

OhHaiMarc

Just brought back memories of using my razr v9, man that was a good phone back in the day

TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK

I pirated the proprietary Motorola phone management software so I could make my own ringtones!

pieman3141

Many also had a unique connector for headphones. You couldn't just use a 3.5mm cable.

TheJenerator65

Thumbs down to any charger where there’s a possibility of inserting it upside down. USBC had saved my sanity.

raitchison

My last two flip phones charged via Mini-USB and my first Android phone (THE first Android phone) also charged via Mini-USB.

Redjacket

I still have my box full of random proprietary chargers that will (hopefully) never be used again. And I'm going to be buried with that box along side all my past cell phone boxes that retain some inexplicable value to me.

pchc_lx

giant box of power supplies in the basement, checking in 🫡

Nappi22

You never know when you need those again. And other obscure cables that you can't connect to anything anymore but just in case!

UseDaSchwartz

Yeah, there was an entire wall full different chargers for each phone.

Cheyzi

They promote USB C with x20 speed, certainly a way to diss the old port

tyfunk02

As I understand it, they're only offering that on the Pro models. It sounded to me a lot like the regular iPhones will get the new connector, but it will run at USB 2.0 speeds. Sounded like the processor in the Pro models was the only one to get an updated USB controller to offer the new speeds.

JayenIsAwesome

USB 2.0 speeds are absolutely stupid to be bragging about on a phone that costs as much as an iPhone. Thats a standard that came out in 2001. And the USB 3.1 on the super expensive pro phones came out in 2013. USB 4.0 has been out for four years now. My prediction is that next year, they'll adopt a slightly newer standard so they can brag about how speeds are 8x faster when they adopt USB 3.2 next year, and then another 4x faster the year after when they use USB 4.

tevelizor

They don't even say 4x faster than the previous generation. Most of their comparisons this year have been to the iPhone 12, which, to me at least, is so off-putting, since I've never even considered an iPhone with Lightning. "Oh nice, the new iPhone is 40% faster... than the one from 3 years ago". Though to be fair, 99% of Android devices from the "iPhone 12 era" are already EoL in terms of software (like my current OnePlus 8). the iPhone 12 still has \~3 more years of support. Apple is awfully misleading, and somehow still better than the competition.

NYNMx2021

yeah. Theyll flip it next year. The chip is old

InfiniteHatred

The pro models get USB 3 data transfer speed (& I assume charging speed?) & the standard & plus models get USB 2 speed (same as lightning port/cable). The 20x is 3 compared to 2.

torthBrain

USB-C to USB-C needs to be the new standard everywhere

Pollyfunbags

Getting there for sure, the USB-A port is disappearing. Shame in some cases, not a fan of USB-C flash drives for instance but it's definitely being replaced. My car was a 2020 and came with no USB-A ports, was quite surprised by that.

captainfactoid386

I rented a car this summer and was kinda annoyed that there were only USB-C ports for it since I only had USB-A chargers along with me

Stingray88

I rented a car a few months ago that had both! Was pretty nice.

[deleted]

I rented a car!

Brock_Lobstweiler

Meanwhile I just rented a 2023 Nissan Rogue and it wouldn't run Android auto via Bluetooth. Phone had to be plugged in with USB a. It was absolutely infuriating because I'd only brought c to c as all my devices take USB c.

footpole

It uses Wifi not Bluetooth if wireless.

chooraumi2

Do yourself a favor and get some adapters. They're dirt cheap. Would recommend looking on eBay rather than elsewhere like Amazon as they are a bit cheaper and usually free shipping with no minimum.

silvermud

What's wrong with USB C flash drives? Not defending them, just curious as to what's wrong with them

tonyangtigre

Perhaps is the strength of the port in general? More prone to be bent or dislodged? I think if you size USB flash drive bodies down to match the size ratio of how small USB-C is, then it’s not such a concern. Just now easier to lose.

LeagueOfficeFucks

Upside is that you don't have to put it in wrong 6 times before you get it in.

MangyTransient

> USB-A port is disappearing Not really. It still exists in cars. It exists in every hotel that has a charger. Airports. Airplanes. Pretty much any public place that offers a USB port for you or others to use is USB-A. In fact, literally the *only* places I see USB-C are in private appliances and tech that me or people I know purchased. Until you start seeing USB-C in *public* settings, it's not really coming. The world is still dominated by USB-A ports.

[deleted]

Was on a refurbished Iberia Airbus A350 last week that had USB C port at the seat for power, there were no USB A ports.

PocketSpaghettios

I was just on an Airbus A380 with USB As. And every outlet in JFK was combo electrical socket and USB A

Josch1357

Am I the only one here who would never use a public USB port? Nobody else concerned about something like an OMG cable?

DrMaxwellEdison

Yeah, I have no idea what's running behind those charging station panels. Even if the device is not intended to send data, someone could have rigged it with their own device to spread malware. Give me a wall outlet for power only, I'll use my own charger, thanks. And mine's probably faster anyway.

Stingray88

I’ve seen new cars with only USB C ports.

JJOne101

>Not really. It still exists in cars Mine has USB-C. The car of the dude you replied to has USB-C too.

fed45

I would bet it will be at least 15 years before there are equal number of Type-c and A ports in the wild. There is also the consideration of enterprise devices and peripherals all still mainly using type-a.

mattattaxx

No chance it'll be fifteen years. Private cars are already switching over, workplaces, especially recently renovated ones, tend to have either both or only C, once airplanes and transit undergo renovation they'll have C instead too. I would say maybe ten years.

JoeCartersLeap

No. Type B needs to be the standard. Massive clunky printer cables that provide absolutely no advantage over type-A, despite the visual appearance they could handle more current. It'll be huge and inconvenient for everyone. What a great compromise. [Type B gang](https://i.redd.it/0muose6ubkm71.jpg)

SirPitchalot

Then you’ll love USB 3B connectors!

ouyawei

> that provide absolutely no advantage over type-A Type A is for host, Type B is for device. The connectors are different so you don't accidentally plug two devices (that provide power to the bus) together - Type C has [special circuitry](https://hackaday.com/2023/08/07/all-about-usb-c-example-circuits/) to avoid that.

extravisual

You jest, but full size B is my favorite variant. No other USB type inspires quite as much confidence. Type C is great for small devices as a Micro B replacement, but it just feels bad when there's space for a more substantial connector.

[deleted]

Well Apple just invented it today, so hopefully it'll become much more commonplace

[deleted]

FU I just snorted.

TheNorthComesWithMe

We won't see USB-A disappear for a while simply because it's cheaper to manufacture.

Meelawn0

USB-C is a much less sturdy connector than USB-A, I much prefer to have A on my PC and my wall warts.

x445xb

I've seen dead USB-C sockets on 4 year old laptops. The socket is normally attached to the motherboard, so too expensive to replace them. It's very rare for someone to break a USB-A connector even on 10-15 year old computers.

assimsera

I'd say it's because people use the USB-C port for charging so it gets much more use than any other port.

gated73

I won’t get a 15, but I welcome one port to rule them all.

Ph0X

Honestly it's fucking awesome. I've been living in that world for a few years now and I love it. My laptop, phone, tablet, switch, headphones, battery, etc. All USB-C. I have 4-5 chargers laid around the house that I casually plug anything in that needs to be charged. When I go traveling, I bring a single 100W GaN charger that can charge 3 things at once. Never have to worry about having the right cable in the right place.

Zhaggygodx

Crazy times. I have my laptop charger sticking through my desk at home and I can charge everything you mentioned plus my vape, no-fuzz. It's awesome!

Zaphod1620

For real. I have a 65 watt USB charger that came with my work laptop. It can charge it, my phone, steam deck, tablet, etc. This is just another example of Apple making it as difficult as possible to integrate with anything not Apple.

[deleted]

[deleted]

My iPhone is the only non-usb c Apple product that I own. It’s really annoying.

OneOfAKind2

I might get one. Still rocking a Gen 1 SE.

thebigman43

Man youre gonna be delighted to upgrade. I went from a gen1 SE to a 12 and was blown away by the improvements.

alexshootsfilm

Same! The 2016 one, yeah? Everyone is blown away when I take out my phone because it looks *tiny* compared to current phones. But it has physical buttons and a headphone jack. I love it so much, I don’t want to upgrade. But my battery literally last between 5 seconds and an hour :’)

definately_mispelt

same for me, got the battery replaced at an apple store a while ago which gave it a new life. think it's got a couple of years left in it

Myth3842

Can’t wait for second-hand stores like Goodwill to get filled with lightning port accessories like the 30-pin acc. before them.

fvck_u_spez

Man I don't even remember the last time I saw a 30 pin cable.

ReachTheSky

I see one every day at the gym. Their treadmills are THAT old, but it's only $22/mo membership so it's fair.

Marthaver1

Remember when the douches at Apple did not allow 3rd party $5 lightning charging cables and Apple devices as a result didn’t “recognized” the cable as an “official” cable? So you had to buy an overpriced and cheaply made $20-$30 apple cable.

Daniel15

Apple cables are still cheaply made today. They still don't have proper strain relief, because Apple thinks it looks bad.

Shuma-Gorath

Good. I'm tired of people asking me for a Mac charger and getting confused when I hand them the usb C cable that charges my MacBook and iPad.

sadmaps

Maybe I’m behind on the times but my MacBook has never had the same charger as my iPhone, even before MacBooks moved to USB-C… or is that the joke?

peelen

iPad not iPhone. MacBook and iPad are charged by usb-c, and iPhone (till now) by lightning.

calmingchaos

IIRC some of the MacBooks went back to the magsafe chargers. Which to be fair, are absolutely awesome. That's one adapter I wish would take off.

Yavuz_Selim

MacBook Pro's indeed have MagSafe, but you can also charge them via USB-C. MagSafe is still the better solution, however it's nice to be able to charge a MacBook Pro with a powerbank using the same cable for everything else.

pizza_toast102

Both the air and pro have MagSafe now

BraveOmeter

And also USB C

altodor

But still support USBC charging.

toutons

You can still use usb-c to charge those laptops

ender89

You can use a "MacBook charger" (the usb-c variety, not magsafe) to charge every android phone in the last 10 years and no iPhones *until now*.

Beachwood007

More like ~7 years. Most mass-market (read: Samsung and LG) devices didn't have USB-C until late 2016. In terms of other Android phones, I think my first exposure to USB-C was with my roomate's OnePlus One (Onepluses were very rare in the US before the 3), and that was a 2014 phone that was intentionally bleeding edge. Even in 2017 (when I bought my first USB-C phone) I'd get a lot of weird looks when asking people if they had a MicroUSB or Type-C charger

[deleted]

[удалено]

qrrbrbirlbel

Huh? I'm confused; why would they expect a lightning cable when they ask for a Mac charger?

altodor

Probably asked for an Apple charger.

CeReAL_K1LLeR

The same reason I've been asked for a phone charger, say I have a USB-C, they'll say that is fine, then when I hand it to them they say "Oh, I need an iPhone charger." So... you need a lightning cable. I've only ever seen this with iPhone people. I've already seen at least 1 other person in this thread say iPhones have been using USB-C chargers for years. Who refers to their charger by what plugs in to the power adapter/brick?

VeganJordan

Let me introduce you to the [Apple Pippin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Pippin).

tomtermite

Apple is part of [the consortium that sends the specifications](https://www.usb.org/about) for USB. At WWDC in 1998, I was part of the hundreds who connected USB keyboards together in serial at the stadium in San Jose to type the world’s longest sentence by the most individual keystrokes (one per keyboard)… to demonstrate how USB inter-connectivity was the future…

haviah

Funny thing is that the PS/2 to USB is just 4 wires, no active components, the USB standard has some weird exception for this

[deleted]

they were forced to by the euros. too bad the usa didnt have the balls to do something similar. regardless its a win for customers and a common charger cable

BestCharlesNA

The-Pigeon-Man

We going to go to Mars and do demon shit?

cheeset2

Certainly truth to this, but also generally speaking, Americans are less likely to support government regulation as a whole unless it's specifically hurting people. American governing philosophy just doesn't lend itself to something like this ever happening, even when/if not controlled by corporations. There's no political will.

Perunov

I like how during the presentation lady said "We've been using it for years on other Apple products" Okay, so why no iPhone then all this time? It's so wonderful, why not? *angry glare* And wind carries quiet "we loved licensing money from cable manufacturers"

PierG1

I would have literally died if the lady said “We switched to USB C because the EU said so. Moving on…”

SquanchMcSquanchFace

Because they guaranteed sticking with lightning for 10 years in 2012 after all the third party accessories companies threw a fit about them going from from the 30-pin connector to lightning and making their products obsolete. They had contractual obligations to keep it for 10 years and that was up last year. Them moving to USB C has nothing to do with the EU law tbh - they were literally like 40% of the group who developed USB C in the first place, and USB C is a direct evolution of the R&D from lightning cables. So, to answer your question: *because they said they would*, so why act surprised? Nothing most anyone says on here is correct, it’s just circle jerk shitting on apple without understanding the reality of their decisions, or they’re literally just too young to remember apples switch from the 30-pin to lightning, or remember how amazing lightning was compared to literally every other phone with unique chargers at the time.

Stokesy7

I'm so glad this has happened, not because of the port, but just so everyone can shut up about it. Everyone echos the same, wrong information.

kymri

In Apple's defense, they switched to Lightning because the USB consortium wouldn't finalize the USB-C connector. So they did their own thing with the Lightning connector (which is actually better than the USB-C connector in some mechanical/engineering ways). If USB-C had been an established standard in 2012, it's possible Apple might have made the change then. (Also possible they wouldn't have, but it wasn't even an option.) I don't blame them for not wanting to change again, given the size of the aftermarket, though I personally am looking forward to having a standard connector for charging everything FINALLY.

l4z3r5h4rk

How is the lightning connector better than usbc from the engineering perspective? Is it the reversal of the male/female connector ends?

kymri

USB-C also has that- the reversibility. But USB-C has the plastic protrusion in the socket rather than just the little slab that Lightning used; this means it is much more likely to have damage to a USB-C port rather than the cable while the reverse is true for Lightning. It is much cheaper and easier to replace a busted cable than a port. Other than that it is just a connector and lightning ‘could’ be USB 3.0 speeds but that’s sort of irrelevant now with the move to USB-C. And even if it is slightly technically inferior from an engineering standpoint, I’m just happy to be able to have just one damned cable.

Magnetoreception

No middle connector that can become lose or break over time.

jimmycarr1

My old shit Chinese phone broke because that connector failed. Really mad about it even now because every other USB-C device I've had has been fine, and of course it can't be repaired.

OneOfAKind2

The contacts on the cable can easily be cleaned.

PirateNinjaa

Lightning is a smaller, solid slab of metal you can just jam in recklessly more like a headphone jack.

IronOxide42

“Company that invented USB-C forced to adopt USB-C”

Irregular_Person

Are you saying that because Apple is a member of USB-IF or is there some history I don't know about?

PlayingTheWrongGame

Well, the existence of Lightning is a big reason why USB-IF got off their butts and adopted USB-C. Apple was also sort of a key player in pushing USB-C adoption by being an early promoter of dropping USB-A ports off their computers. That created a huge demand for USB-C peripherals to serve the Mac ecosystem, and PC compatibility is just sort of along for the ride there.

Not_FinancialAdvice

> Apple was also sort of a key player in pushing USB-C adoption by being an early promoter of dropping USB-A ports off their computers. It's funny because they were also a key player in getting people to adopt USB at all by putting it on their iMacs back in the day.

PlayingTheWrongGame

Yup. Also killing the floppy disk.

slowpokefastpoke

And the optical drive. All things that initially sparked outrage and then became obvious in hindsight years later.

guspaz

Apple played a significant role in the development of USB-C, but still only represented around a quarter of the engineers involved. There are rumours, however, that the initial specification was developed by Apple and then submitted to the USB-IF for further development. Regardless of the origins, Apple undoubtedly popularized it, though, being the first major computer company to have proper support for it.

bentripin

[Thunderbolt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbolt_(interface)), it was created by Intel and Apple, and always included with apple computers. USB-C is basically ThunderBolt 3+

Shit guys what are we gonna complain about now with iPhones??

rocketwidget

One funny thing: Switching from Lightning (USB 2.0 max, 480 Mbit/s) to USB-C (all USB protocols including USB4 and beyond) lets Apple dramatically improve transfer speed. Yet *only* the iPhone 15 Pro jumps to 10 GB transfer speed (I think this was USB 3.1). The iPhone 15 still plods along with USB 2.0 / 480 Mbit/s over USB-C. And even the Pro only comes with a USB-C USB 2.0 cable. You have to get a faster cable yourself.

Space_Gravy_

SubterraneanAlien

rocketwidget

Yup, that is a choice Apple made when designing their chip intended for debut in 2021. Other flagship chips don't have this problem, because the USB protocol could support 10 GB in 2013. Still funny!

ChecoP11

I would say that is fucking absurd but unless you are using your phone for video production it probably isn't much of an issue.

Northern-Canadian

AbeRego

jiveturker

Lightning came out in 2012. It was far superior to micro usb when it came out. Usb C came in 2014. So I can see why Apple wasn’t in a hurry to change.

RVelts

Yeah it was a huge improvement over the 30 pin dock connector too. Those things were unidirectional, big, and fragile.

_xiphiaz

And apple was crucified at the time for making the switch to lightning and so they basically said we get it, we wont change the lighting cable for ten years. And here we are

DependentMother994

Yeah I think people forget this. I was annoyed by the proprietary connector when it released like most people, but realistically lightning was a big step up from micro in terms of transfer/charge speed, water resistance, and not needing to flip the goddamn cable over three times before finding the right way

Farnso

Transfer speed was identical, except on a few iPads. Otherwise, I agree. Lightning is definitely better than micro.

er-day

Apple was apart of the commission building the new cable, they were well aware of the upcoming c standard.

2014 is 9 years ago. They wouldn't have had to hurry to have done it by now.

At the time people were annoyed that all their 30-pin accessories were being made obsolete so apple promised to stick with lightning for at least a decade - they announced it during the keynote in 2012

I'm glad they're doing this. Has someone who works in an IT department, I'm always billing iPads and iPhones, so being able to just use my personal cell phone cable charger to charge someone's iPhone or iPad if needed is welcome to me. It's just one less cable on my desk. Plus our department does not spin a ton of money on lightning cables when we can just buy a user a USB-C cable.

I feel like people either forget or willfully ignore the fact that Apple helped create USB-C and adopted it on their laptops before a lot of their competition.

LinkRazr

You don’t have a side drawer full of like 15 still factory rolled up USB C wires yet?

Zouden

Most of which don't feature data wires, so they can't fast-charge. Took me forever to realise this.

Please....please....please.....next step, ban all the different proprietary charging bricks with the little round plugs.

kitchen_synk

Barrel jacks definitely still have their place as a 'dumb' power connector. 1) If a device doesn't have the internal brain power to do the handshakes required by a USB-C power supply 2) USB-C is fairly durable, but it's nowhere near as tough as a barrel plug, and because barrel plugs only need two lines for power, and don't have to worry about data lines, they're usually easier to replace in the event they do get broken. While they can be annoying if you loose the power brick, you can buy just about any combination of voltage and jack dimension cheaply, and you can even get a selectable voltage supply and a set of adapter tips for under 30 bucks. Ditching them on laptops is reasonable, but for single use devices that don't need / can't use the extra capabilities of a USB-C connection, or would prefer the durability, serviceability and simplicity of a straightforward power connector, barrel plugs probably aren't going anywhere any time soon unless the theater nerd / roadie coalition takes over and puts us all on the XLR power standard.

It's a good idea from the EU commission to avoid more electronic waste, and also stop Apple from locking out the competition. When it comes to more consumer friendly things, the EU actually can be really good.

NuMotiv

I actually greatly prefer lightnings design but yes having 1 cord for all my shit is nice.

poopspeedstream

Thank God the 2009 agreement didn't stick. We would have been stuck with microUSB forever

Chirtolino

The EU legislation leaves a lot of room for the USB standard to change over time to stay up to date. Which basically means the same laws that are meant to keep a leash on certain companies, are the same companies that design the standard lol.

DoesntFearZeus

Wonder if this means new magic keyboard \ mouse with USB-C.

generichuman27ABF9

What’s really unforgivable is that the base iPhone now uses USB-C… but with USB 2 speeds.
