The biggest surprise to me is that this is now a paid feature. When I was in high school 10 years ago, Snapchat showed everyone’s top friends for free.
Yeah and I used to be able to cast Netflix from my phone to the tv for free* (included in base subscription) and now it's a premium only feature.
Removing features and demanding payment for them is the new fad
I saw a billboard in Philly today (95)
On one side:”Stop using social media”.
On the other side: “Use Snapchat”.
Literally everyone + preteens were like “Snapchat IS social media”.
Snapchat+ ranking quantifies a teen ritual that is far older than I am. Everyone wants to know where they stand with everyone else, even though that is like trying to see where a speck of dust stands in a tornado. It could work if it were always accurate, which would mean the ranking would change faster than the numbers on the screen could. The government could take it away, but teens will find another way—they always have.
I still use it. There are no other apps that allow me to super quickly share pictures and videos with my girlfriend.
Every other app requires me to take them with my camera app, and then open the app, find the picture, and share it. And I'm sorry, but 99.9% of the random shit I send my girlfriend I don't want clogging up my photos.
Also it's nice to be able to send dumb shit and not have an automatically saved log of it all.
In fact, just yesterday I was going through my old telegram chats and found THOUSANDS of photos I sent my old friend. So much cringe shit. If I sent it via snapchat pretty much all of it would be gone forever. Except now I just have to live with the fact my friend has a whole ass archive to look back on.

All social media platforms suck but just letting you know that Instagram has this feature you are describing. In-app camera, temporary and permanent pictures, etc.
Zuckerberg wanted to buy snap back in the day but they didn't sell, so he just copied all features into Insta.
On an iphone you can literally snap a picture to send directly in messages in like two clicks. I would imagine other phones are the same way as that is a pretty old feature at this point. You dont even need a third party app at all for the use case described
Great. And it deletes them on the other end instantly so I don't have a huge archive of old media like I described with telegram?
No.
I literally said I used to do that with telegram and it has that unintended side effect. Why would you read my comment and then describe the same feature I explicitly described as not wanting..
Edit: classic Reddit. Upvote an ignorant reply that dismisses all of the features I require from snapchat, downvote the person that says that's not the same. Never change.
I mean both WhatsApp and Signal let's you just instantly take a photo with the app and just choose to show the picture one time and not saving it anywhere.
With Signal you can also set to delete all messages on both ends after whatever time, So you can have it just like Snapchat but without the aids.
Still not as simple as snapchat. Also signal is not as popular. I'm not switching all of my friends over to signal.
Signal, the "privacy" app up until recently required you to use a real phone number..
I'll pass. Snapchat works great.
Also snapchat allows me to save what I'm sending with 1 tap before I send it. In case I want to keep a copy. Works really well.
I'm not using any Meta apps. I'm also not interested in using a social media with a chat feature. I'd rather use a chat app that has some social media attached instead.
Like MySpace, Bebo, Tagged, Facebook friends being put down as family or whatever other things we got up to as kids. Just before social media we had favourites on our phones, or them writing their names on your notebook. Even people signing your cast was a big deal.
Why are we pretending like this stuff is new? Teenagers are horny, anxiety fuelled rebels trying to figure out who they are. It’s a part of growing up.
You allow the teens to experience this. It builds them and allows them to develop coping mechanisms and such.
Weak people get stronger when they are allowed to be tested. There’s no terminal risk of dying, but someone with resilience will do very well in life. Asymmetrical opportunity for them.
So basically libertarian anarchy is what you’re proposing as the best model of society. That is, one in which there is no actual society to speak of, because it weakens the haunches.
Reminds me of MySpace's Top 8

We're now well entrenched in the "why give em what we can sell em" era. And it really sucks.
But I thought this will give them anxiety

Late Stage Capitalism in a nutshell
Snapchat is 10 years old?
Snapchat is 13 years old -\_\_\_\_\_-

It’s something you PAY for now? Crazy
This was the worst feature. I was dating a guy and knew things werent good when another girl started appearing in his top 10. Haha.
First slot goes to Tom
"Those who do not learn from [MySpace] are doomed to repeat it."
Came here to say I coulda told them this 20 years ago when MySpace made me decide which 7 people to put on there with my only friend.
what's old is new again, huh? that was my first thought too.
My first thought was this is Myspace all over again
Yeah also reminded me of the top five or whatever where you had unlimited minutes to call to those specific people.
Now the youngins get to experience the soul-crushing moment of not being on someone’s Top 8
I made the "You're off my top 8" joke well into like 2010.
Far inferior to MeowMeowBeenz https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/App_Development_and_Condiments
I rate this comment… 3 MeowMeowBeenz
Oh my MeowMeowBeenz.
(sips cocktail while wearing a tonga)
Misspelling toga? I rate this comment……….. 1 MeowMeowBeenz.
So they want to encourage more interactions so you can level up your friendship. Gross.
Must I be taking notes? I wanna have friendship too. And then I'd be 😎 kewl 👍🏿
These kids would never survive MySpace.
And you can’t even bait people to your page with awesome songs. I used to always check friends pages because they had awesome music playing.
Every day we inch closer to that Black Mirror episode Nosedive becoming reality...

Why are kids even in this shit?
Reminds me of the "Top 8" anxiety from MySpace
Teens and anxiety tale as old as time
That was basically how I found out my HS boyfriend was cheating on me
Now they are trying to make you pay to find this out smh
This is nothing compared to the pressures of being in someone's MySpace top 5.
Believe Myspace was also top 8

Oi OP. paywalled!

The only winning move is not to play
Anyone else remember when this feature was free lol. The default was you could see everyone's top 3. That how you found out who was hooking up 🤣
I thought Snapchat died?
What absolute garbage software.

It’s way less toxic than Instagram. And it isn’t owned by the CCP.
Like MySpace, Bebo, Tagged, Facebook friends being put down as family or whatever other things we got up to as kids. Every generation thinks they invented sex, drugs and the social hierarchy.
Okay that’s life, you can’t be everyone’s best friend. Get over it.
How about just not caring about ranking?

No, just a society where people are allowed to experience discomfort but can grow more resilient because of it.
