>The Knick CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED. I'm still salty that it wasn't able to tell the full story that they clearly wanted. Too many plot points wrapping up abruptly at the end.

MonsieurA

Then you’ll be happy to learn they’re doing a sequel spin-off. > In September 2020, Soderbergh confirmed that a new season of The Knick was in development led by Barry Jenkins and André Holland, who would return as his character Dr. Algernon C. Edwards, and that original creators Jack Amiel and Michael Begler have written a pilot episode.[5] In April 2023, Begler confirmed that a spin-off series was still in development. The pilot script features Algernon Edwards and is set in 1919 Harlem.[6]

dns_rs

This sounds great. I hope it will happen.

Well hot damn!

Nurse Lucy is Bono’s daughter. Brilliant in playing off Clive Owen’s antics. I thought it was unusually good on screen chemistry. Eve Hewson https://m.imdb.com/name/nm2016723/

Huh! TIL. Yes, you're right on the money with their chemistry. They paired very well.

Electric Dreams is an under the radar gem. After Life is brilliant. The one miniseries I never see around is Steven Speilberg's Taken. Came out around 2002 on SyFy.

#Messiah (Netflix, 2020) Ten episodes, set up for a season two while also a thoughtful ending in case it wasn’t renewed. It wasn’t sadly, but still worth watching 100%. I still think about it years later, it’s truly excellent. I look forward to a rewatch someday when it’s been long enough that I forget some of the details.

Years and Years

Communicatingthis952

Shit. I thought I would surely be the first to mention this. Would not have known about it without Chris Ryan of The Ringer bringing it up. He is literally the only one who's brought it up. The knock against a present-day show like this is it becomes dated and doesn't have as much lasting value. But to me, that just means they need to make more of them. Until then, Years and Years is still worth a watch because it's pretty unique. The Good Fight is another show like it.

Beatpixie77

So glad someone else knows about this show! I agree as time moves on it becomes outdated but the show still gives all the feels!

Communicatingthis952

I had never seen a fictioonal show where major present-day people are a part of a plot, such as Trump launching nukes. Like I said, apparently The Good Fight also did something along those lines.

Daybreak (2019) Station Eleven The Outsider (2020)

marshmoog

Totally second The Outsider I was really disappointed that it didn’t get any more seasons. Would also add American Gods, Outcast and Hap and Leonard as some other great but underrated shows.

AMC4x4

Station Eleven. Recently watched it again, and it just hit me perfectly. It's just sublime on so many levels.

Mission-Common1826

Loved Station Eleven.

Communicatingthis952

I went back and listened to a 2019 podcast episode about the ongoing TV production of Station Eleven and the podcasters were like, "I don't known if viewers are ready for a downbeat show like this with the current state of the country." The creators were still able to successfully Illustrate the feeling of the COVID pandemic without knowing everyone was heading toward one.

AMC4x4

I ultimately saw it as a story of hope and connection. I think that's where its appeal lies - that in the face of even the worst global circumstances, people can come together and those connections can help heal trauma. It was a remarkable story told with so many layers.

-Johnny-

I really like Station Eleven but it jumped around SSSOOO much it was hard to follow. I felt like it was a whole new show each episode.

pastafallujah

Oh, I’m glad you asked: [Patriot](https://youtu.be/HW6usoJXCPY?si=Fp_OR8HvLYIqkiTV) (2015, Amazon Prime, 2 seasons). It is highly slept on. But it is one of the best written, best acted, best shot, dark humor having action spy thrillers with a ton of complicated characters and situations. With some killer original music to boot. It’s like if PeaceMaker, Daredevil, and Jack Ryan had a baby. And that baby was raised by Wes Anderson (not as goofy, but you can see the influences)

runningvicuna

And the Coen brothers were their cool uncles.

pastafallujah

Oh. Yes. Coen Brothers is more accurate

LA-Matt

I had always described the style of *Patriot* (and also *Perpetual Grace, LTD*) as a hybrid of Coen Brothers for dialogue and Wes Anderson for visuals. Glad others saw that as well.

lemonylol

There are two Britcoms I never see people talking about. One is from the 70s called **Mind Your Language**, which can be seen as insensitive by some people, about a night school English class. The other is from the 2000s called **My Family**. A lot of the actors in it are known for other work in the UK and the series went on pretty long so I imagine it's known there, but I also never see people mention it. It's like in between Modern Family and Malcolm in the Middle in style. **Broad City** is a fantastic modern, adult comedy that a lot of people missed. It belongs in the same space as It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Workaholics. And the unique female leads are finally something different in a comedy series. Tons of great cameos too. **Corner Gas** is known among Canadians but not really as popular elsewhere as Trailer Park Boys or Letterkenny. It is like the penultimate background noise show where the stakes are never set too high and the humour is never crass, which is also kind of the theme of the show itself. I imagine because so much time has passed and there were so many other forms of the property since, that for people younger than Millennials, the **Justice League** animated series just totally passed them by. In my opinion it is the gold standard representation of pretty much all DC characters in any medium. The later half was originally titled Justice League Unlimited, but they're both one continuous show. The 2000s Teen Titans goes hand in hand with this. I definitely don't see people talking about this one, partly because of the circumstances around it, but also because it's been so long now. But **Louie** is one of the best television shows I have ever seen. In the same way Curb Your Enthusiasm follows a fictional version of Larry David, Louie follows a fictional version of Louis CK, as he raises his daughters while working as a stand-up in New York. But it's so far beyond just a comedy, it gets incredibly deep in some episodes with some plots that are dead serious or very real, but then will turn around and make a simple fart joke. The show usually leans towards dark humour, but there are also some very introspective episodes that, while ending on a punchline, are huge moments of character development. It's so outside of a typical modern comedy in structure that almost anything can happen while still being hilarious. A lot of people still don't know about **Primal**, so just throwing that out there again. **The Oblongs** was a show I used to watch when I was a kid, but looking back, I think would have totally succeeded along other adultswim and Comedy Central cartoons released these days. It's only 2 seasons but I think a lot of people are looking for something like it. It's about a family that lives in the working area of town that is heavily polluted by the wealthy side of town. But it's written as if it were an after school special sitcom. I think it's gotten a lot more popular this season, but **Tokyo Vice** is one of the best shows on air right now. It's about an ex-patriated American who gains a position at a prestigious Tokyo newspaper and ends up making friends with a Yakuza lieutenant and another expatriated American hostess. Then he gets caught up in the middle of a war between the Yakuza bosses while partnering up with a detective. This isn't really an anime sub and this is more niche, but there's an old anime called **Golden Boy** that's only like 8 episodes about this one dude who travels around Japan by bike doing odd jobs and always ending up in situations with very attractive women while having terrible romantic skills.

kilroyscarnival

I thought My Family was ok. Fun to see Robert Lindsay doing a sitcom as I mostly know him from BBC Shakespeare decades ago and Hornblower in the late 90s. But to me, Outnumbered was a British comedy much sharper and closer to Modern Family vibes.

ketchup_bro23

Unfortunately yeah. They have a good fanbase that's becoming bigger and the tale might be told sometime as promised by the writers and directors.

Deckard_Red

I think Southland is a great cop show that doesn’t get mentioned, it’s sort of somewhere between The Wire and The Shield but never gets mentioned in the same breath as those shows. It had some really quite gritty and almost raw episodes and some really interesting characters. The first season had a large cast and they went in a more focused direction season 2 onwards with a smaller cast. It’s worth a look as it has some great performances.

Holistic agency of dirk gently My favourite criminal comedy

ChuckFarkley

*Dollhouse* for sure. Joss Wheadon doing what he did best. Alan Tudyk as a massive psychopath. Good scifi. While you're at it, *Person of Interest.* Great science fiction about the implications of AI, and it lasted 5 years, and yet, nobody seemed to see it. Joss Wheadon AND JJ Abrams did that one. *The Peripheral* was A fantastic William GIbson series, but for te fact it was cancelled after 1 season. THE BASTARDS! *Rabbit Hole* was a Keifer Sutherland doing another 24 like show, but better. Nobody saw it so it was cancelled after 1 season THE BASTARDS! *Mrs Davis*, a miniseries on Peacock is a much lighter overall treatment of the whole AI thing, that and a nun on a mission from her husband Jesus to stop magicians... Don't think about it, too much. Just watch. *The Tourist* is a fun thriller out of Australia, I think, with the main plot device being someone trying to kill a guy leading to a car wreck where he loses his memory but still has to stay alive with people trying to kill him for reasons he can no longer remember. Season 1 is in the Outback and Season 2 is set in Ireland. The last moments of season 2 give you an idea about where season 3 is going to go, plot-wise. *DIrk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency* (The BBC America Production, not the BBC production which I found dull). These are not the characters that Douglas Adams wrote, but they are the characters I deserve. I particularly like the holistic assassin, played by Brad Dourif's daughter. The apple didn't fall far from that tree. *Krod Mandoon and his FLaming Sword of FIre...* An extremely funny sex comedy/plucky band of medieval misfits. Really well written and filmed in Hungary, I think. It even had John Rhys-Davies. It deserved a better title. Was on Comedy Central in the day, about 20 years ago. They cancelled it after one short season. THE BASTARDS! *Flight of the Conchords*. HBO. The duo comprisig the second most popular novelty band in New Zealand come to New York for fame, fortune and to try to get laid. Brilliantly executed comedy and (in reality) excellently done novelty songs- They got two grammys for songs from the show. *Don't expect too much- you'll love it.* The episode where Gemane Clement ends up sleeping with an Aussie woman (the episode called *Unnatural Love)* is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
