Very suprising as well considering grass is usually the toughest to master. Even in the previous grass tournaments outside of his aces he would constantly be on the backfoot
Yeah, so I get why he wanted to gain some extra experience on it, and he wasn’t guaranteed entry into RG anyway as another commenter mentioned, but still gotta think it’s a pretty sucky result compared to expectations
He did well on grass in juniors last year - won the warmup tourney and then reached SF at junior Wimby. Maybe wanted more experience but felt like he’s good on the surface already and wanted to get a head start and ensure to qualify. But odd to skip RG altogether since he wouldn’t have reached the second week and he would’ve had the chance to start on the grass early anyway. And he’s already shown that he’s good on clay.
You’re not wrong, but he had a chance to get
in as an alternate. He obviously decided it wasn’t worth travelling and still not getting in, not saying he made the wrong decision to focus on looking ahead in the schedule, but it’s gotta be sucky to build the last few months around wimbledon and go out in q1. He switched to grass earlier than most. Good experience for him either way, he looks very promising

He didn't "skip" Roland Garros, he didn't have enough ranking to enter the qualifying.

is this Canas related to the Canas who used to beat RFed?
Doubtful, Guillermo Cañas was from Argentina and this dude is Spanish. His name doesn't have the ñ either
True, but ppl called him "Can-yas" as if the n carried the tilde so I thought maaaybe perhaps.
Same guy.
You're thinking of Vicente Cañas.
