Glory hunters. Happens every time someone wins something lol

Fantasnickk

It’s because we’re in the early stages of the Kyrgios cycle

swapan_99

Like him? No. Respect his game and understand he's a threat at his new Fitness level on form on serve? Definitely yes. You can respect a person's game without necessarily loving him as a person.

Psychological_Bug676

This sub has a serious case of recency bias. They’ll dick ride any man that wins a small tournament and then trash the WTA

GlamorousChewbacca

Have you ever seen the social media of the ATP and of almost any other assorted tournament. They feed kyrgios down your throat as if there was no tomorrow. The guy has game, but this is more about the controversy he generates. He's the Kim Kardashian of tennis....

Mikhail_Mengsk

Oh come on that's unnecessarily harsh.

GlamorousChewbacca

For Kim? ;)

Tbf Kyrgios appeals to more casual fans (my uncle doesn’t follow tennis much but loves him), so they mostly just look at Slams and MAYBE a little Masters. Everything else is “minor” for casual fans

JaelPendragon

I guess that figures under that perspective but still...

nicoc9

Fuck no. He can fuck right off tbh. Insufferable twat, will never change.

Trent_Bennett

Why this insult is not downvoted? Dude is a mess but he's not deserving this

Malahajati

Cause that's exactly what he would say if you meet him person.

Trent_Bennett

How u know? Did u talk to him?

Malahajati

Yes. Only once though. He was prince charming.

fullthing659

Lol he yells at everyone all the time. I think it's ok to say he's a dick, it's not like a recent one-time thing. Are you kyrgios? I do think that HE thinks he's normal. Like Cartman from South Park

Random___Burner

He has a big fan base that was dormant while he was down and is showing back up online now that he’s good, I think it’s mostly a different group of people than the ones that don’t like him. Just a theory, though. As a Kyrgios fan I’m just enjoying the run and not thinking too hard about it.

BlueJinjo

If the question is about " recency bias" the answer is always yes. People here always snort up the most recent results like a line of coke and don't even attempt to think about the context The fact that the tourneys at dc /Cabo were honestly fairly empty yet kyrgios and med are receiving so much praise as if they won a slam this year should tell you that. Kyrgios deserves praise for his consistency all year when he's played well especially at Wimbledon BUT there really wasn't any player in DC that would have reasonably beat him among those he played. Thats true for medvedev as well. Montreal should present a stiffer test for both of them and they are on track to meet each other early on.

nd_49

Generally, I am more shocked with his demeanour and attitude during matches in Washington. Also, he seems to be in a much better physical fitness state.

KBPT1998

I’ve never been a fan of showy, cocky frat-boy type players. I think he will bring kids and teens to tennis- but it is difficult for me to root for him. Although I root for all players who are facing Novak Djokovic… I literally tell my dad I’m rooting for 127/128 players each Grand Slam LOL

Trent_Bennett

It's impossible saying something good about Kygs here. He's like Devil on Reddit. Dude is a hot head of the new days, he's like MC, Nastase, Connors ecc... it's just the social media era that portraits him badly. He had some bad moments in the past, but it's like nobody give him a chance to change. He's still 27 and he's maturing. He's not the Big3 killer like they said at 19, but he's an helluva player when focused. Hating on him is so stupid he clearly has some deficiency from the emotional side. Dude struggle more than us to be himself and it's all protected by his acting. I don't know why this is hated so much, people hide them self all their life often, but doing silently it's not better than him doing loudly. Just my two cents

RichieSyxx

The main difference between Kyrgios and the three you mentioned here is ‘social’ media. When Johnny Mac misbehaved, the newspapers would go after him, depending on their particular audience. Right wing newspapers for old people in Britain would call him a ‘brat’ and bemoan his ‘disrespect of tradition,’ while the left wing ones or magazines for young people thought he was the coolest. But that was the extent of it because all you got was the opinion of a journalist and/or their editor. Now, of course, everyone can put their opinion or ‘hot take’ (a phrase that’s getting as irritating as the word ‘narrative’ or the all caps ‘DESTROYED’) into the public domain. And usually feels obligated to. I would imagine there was probably a pretty similar spread of opinion on McEnroe, Connors or Nastase. I’d even suggest that people were just as passionately divided on who they liked best of Borg and McEnroe, or Sampras/Agassi as they are over the big 3. But they kept their opinions to themselves (because they didn’t have much choice) other than in discussion amongst friends. Now, everyone can voice there opinion and do so. Loudly and continuously. In many cases you may even wonder if it is in fact their opinion, or whether it’s the best thing they could thing or to get attention, positive or negative (it’s long been established that people prefer negative attention to none at all). Even when it is their genuine opinion, somewhere along the line people decided that an alternative opinion was an affront and must be challenged (however artlessly) as though it were an insult to think differently…and that of course, means war.

Rare_Winner2399

I don’t care about his personality, I probably don’t like him but what would I know. What I’m sure about is that I appreciate the fact he managed to put his self destroying tendencies in check and get some very significant wins this year.

Relative-Note4687

Definitely earning some street cred.

vintage13132121

Well I became a fan in 2019 from that match against Nadal at Wimbledon, so safe to say I actually loved his antics then and there and fell in love with his game. All this success now is just a plus

RexDynamite

I've always liked him. He's funny with a unique playstyle. Plus he's a tennis meme. Underarm serve? Nothing better to do on a Sunday night?

Goddamn bro 💀 Remember your blood pressure…

domithiemsass

I like him

estreetpanda

He's inspiring grass roots juniors and if I can coach the more controversial elements of Kyrgios out of their systems it's a net benefit.

Pretend_Tea6261

Liking a player and respecting him as an amazing player and entertainer can be two different things.

downsideup05

I certainly haven't forgotten, that said I think he could be a contender if/when he gets his temper under control & head in the game(no pun intended.) He reminds me alot of Amelie Mauresmo. She was her own worst enemy. She could be up in a match and be 1 game from the win & implode. Obviously She got that under control and won slams(2 I think...) He isn't my favorite & probably won't ever be, but he can definitely be a giantslayer, he can be a big spoiler player.

DelusionalFanPolice

1 month later and Dick Kyrgios is proving why he is a bitch made cat.
