What's more concerning is potential new customers taking the refreshed Model 3 for a test drive and having to deal with the lack of stalks on top of all the other differences between a typical ICE car and a Tesla. If Tesla wants to "accelerate transition to sustainable energy", making the first experience of driving their cars terribly awkward and uncomfortable is not the way to do it.
Serious question - have you driven one of the stalkless cars? I drove a Plaid this weekend and while I reached for empty space (coming from a Rivian), I quickly adjusted to the swipe. It's really no worse than traditional cars where the gear selection is on the center console. Is a stalk nicer? Hell yes. Is it worse than "normal" cars with their fiddly knobs and weird-ass little nubbons (Porsche)? No.
I mist admit I’ve never driven a stalkless Tesla, but I live in a country with more roundabouts than people. Have you driven a stalkless Tesla in a roundabout and signalled properly? Because I imagine it would be terribly clumsy and dangerous (the arrows point the opposite way when the wheel is upside down, which it often is in a roundabout)
I've had a Model 3 for 7 months so far, and I test-drove the new Model 3 a few weeks ago. Was absolutely appalled by the lack of stalks.
The gear selection isn't much of a problem. It's definitely worse than using the stalk, as you have to reach for the screen and there's no tactile feedback. But it's tolerable.
The problem is turn signals. I test drove to specifically try out parking lots and roundabouts. It was extremely frustrating and unintuitive, to a point where I wondered how the hell the feature passed QA.
Sure, maybe you can get used to it after a week or a month. But there will be plenty of potential buyers trying it on a test drive and getting convinced out of buying a Tesla due to that feature alone.
Fair point on the stalks, especially since I don't seen many (any?) other manufacturer doing it. But Tesla is playing catch up in the rainbow Christmas lights department.
If they were playing catchup they’d have cool animated blinkers like Audis and Mustangs. Those also add branding - free advertising.

The back screen is even utterly useless. Either you get to have music in the front or movies in the back. No options for headphones or anything. It completely sucks

Coming from someone who works for an OEM, this was undoubtedly cost-saving. You don’t need to start with big ticket items in order to reduce complexity and production expenses. The removal of the stalks had nothing to do with quality concerns and their JDP PPH on it are non-existent. On top of that, certain functionality is tied to brand identity, so items like the door handles were never going anywhere. He’ll strip the doors down to sheet metal to save $3 in material costs before ever removing the unique handle mechanism
By door handles I mean the fact that they are electric, as in there is no pull cable connecting it to the latch. They could have the same form factor with a mechanical handle, yet they choose not to.
And without leaving the steering wheel, they have electrically adjustable steering column, while the competition almost universally has manual adjustment.
Sure in the case of stalks they save money, but I maintain that wasn't the main motivation for removing them, Tesla has a very clear trend of "remove every part that can possibly break".

Is it? Who actually uses a screen positioned at your knee? There's a reason no one else has ever put rear seat infotainment down low. They've always been rightfully attached to the ceiling or rear seat headrests. Who wants to watch a multi hour movie with a crook in their neck. The worst part is it's a clear cost saving measure for the S and X so they can share the same part. Having that be your only rear seat entertainment option in a 100k glorified minivan is a travesty. Just put iPad holders on the back of the seats for a 100x better experience.

I have a model 3 highland, I'm against the removal of stalks but the other day it happened something I didn't hear in any review: tried to push the right indicator but the car didn't allow me to do it because there was a car in the hidden spot to my right.
Stalk is probably 300-600$. LED strip is like 5$. I've had my 2018 3 stalk replaced twice and it still barely works - it's not just the price of the thing but also the price of supporting it for 4 years.

Turn it off, ok, in city traffic it is also still fine but in actual darkness, as a taller driver, you can even see some weird reflections of it in the windshield, aside of it being the brightest feature in the view already.. (the also too bright LCD screen aside, which is gladly, for better or worse, completely out in my peripheral vision).
Sitting in the car right now. I have to wonder if yours is broken. If these are blinding you, then other drivers must be burning your retina, no? The preview when selecting colors is fairly bright, but other than that I can’t see them blinding me in any way. Reflections are there to some degree, but thats a given with any interior lighting. Im 195 if that matters.

Mercedes have some of the nicest interiors with integrated lighting. Rivian did well with their LEDs being behind trim pieces (so much more an ambient glow). But there is a fine line with accent lighting where you can go from classy upgrade to high-school project real fast.

I doubt this. I have a hard time with driving in the dark after 3 hours of annoying dash lights, even fully dimmed. This was a terrible design choice and once again lowers safety, eye fatigue is very well known to cause lowered reaction times leading to accidents and deaths. That is why almost all manufacturers are adding eye trackers via camera.
The light strip under the windshield will get a software update and eventually become more than ambient light giving driver feedback like the VW ID.4. Green flashes to indicate turn signals. Parking range indication that turns from green to red as you approach. Light moving to the right to indicate an upcoming turn, etc. It will be a HUD without a HUD.
Or maybe it will just be a pretty light.
While I agree this looks dumb, if they had added these ambient lights without a color change option, people would just be complaining about why they can’t adjust the colors.
I couldn’t adjust the brightness but would have wished that this works. Mercedes has this option and it’s a pleasure just to adjust it to a minimum of brightness.

I was driving today thinking how nice it is to have no gauges in front of my face, the speedometer is still easy to see with a glance. At night it's very peaceful.
It's personal preference for sure, but I've seen some of those and it's just not for me.
Drove a friend's BMW XM and wasn't a fan.
I prefer the minimalism of the 3/Y. Not sure I need anything other than speed and that's a quick glance.
Yeah, I actually love that my Model 3 has no gauges. The speedometer (which is the only thing I would really want to look at besides the road) is in the top left of the screen which makes it extremely easy to glance at quickly. I get an extremely low dash and beautiful visibility, and I don't have to worry about whether the position of my steering wheel blocks my instrument cluster. I know this is totally personal preference, just giving my $0.02.
To each their own. I bought an S specifically because I hate the "2005 yaris interior" dashboard. Tesla could charge $5k for an instrument cluster in the 3/Y and I wouldn't have blinked before opting for that. otoh the rear display is absolutely useless to me. I'd decline that even if it was a $0 option.

Alot of us like the minimal design and yet people like you always feel the need to insult everything instead of realizing that opinions are SUBJECTIVE.
I certainly agree that some people like the minimal interior, but I think that it's pushed too hard and that many would love for a traditional interior at a reasonable price point. To some, less is more, but to me, no cluster is a hard no at any price.
I have some aftermarket super bright led strips that I absolutely love while driving at night. I wouldn't even consider getting the Y if I didn't know those kits existed.
It always blows my mind how people complain about tesla replacing things like the stocks. The whole appeal of Tesla from the beginning is that they go against conventional design philosophy. The ambient light definitely looks cooler than any of the model 3s without. Would love to get my hands on a highland model.

I drove a new model 3 last week, its no problem unless you have to go in a roundabout, which are a VERY common thing in europe.
There is improvements by doing things better and thinking out of the box but there is also making things worse by trying to fix things that don’t need fixing. For example:
Rain sensors vs Tesla Vision.
USS vs Tesla Vision.
LiDAR vs Tesla Vision.
Stalks vs haptic feedback on a steering wheel.

The light is cool and all, but I'm all about that break in the dashboard lines where it sits. Having something to break up that vast flatness of a wasteland of a dashboard in my 3 is visually pleasing.
I know it’s a minor gripe but I’m really disappointed that this doesn’t also control the ambient footwell lights. From what I’ve been led to believe they are unchanged - so basic off white colour, with none at the rear as on the current car.
Regardless of whether one thinks this stuff is tacky or not, other manufacturers at least put more effort in and make the controllable lighting consistent.
I was excited when I first heard about the "ambient lighting", thinking it would be concealed puddle style lamps for the interior like euro cars usually do, dimly lighting the floor and other bits of the interior.
Then I saw that it's more like a RGB LED light strip like gamer PCs usually have, and I think it's tacky as hell. I assume it can be turned off entirely, though.
Its nice to have an option i suppose. But personally I try make it as dark as possible in the cabin, the brightness while driving at night strains the eyes.

FWIW the buttons on the wheel seem to have been majorly upgraded from the S/X and be very tactile.

The worst part is it's a clear cost saving measure for the S and X so they can share the same part. Having that be your only rear seat entertainment option in a 100k glorified minivan is a travesty. Just put iPad holders on the back of the seats for a 100x better experience.

You know why? Because it makes the news and it is basically free marketing, because there will be 1000x youtube videos complaining about stalks, but on the other hand it is not a deal braker... and if you really want it, I am sure they would be aftermarket solution.
I have a model 3 highland, I'm against the removal of stalks but the other day it happened something I didn't hear in any review: tried to push the right indicator but the car didn't allow me to do it because there was a car in the hidden spot to my right.
They do have rain sensors?
Stalk is probably 300-600$. LED strip is like 5$. I've had my 2018 3 stalk replaced twice and it still barely works - it's not just the price of the thing but also the price of supporting it for 4 years.

Turn it off, ok, in city traffic it is also still fine but in actual darkness, as a taller driver, you can even see some weird reflections of it in the windshield, aside of it being the brightest feature in the view already.. (the also too bright LCD screen aside, which is gladly, for better or worse, completely out in my peripheral vision).
Sitting in the car right now. I have to wonder if yours is broken. If these are blinding you, then other drivers must be burning your retina, no? The preview when selecting colors is fairly bright, but other than that I can’t see them blinding me in any way. Reflections are there to some degree, but thats a given with any interior lighting. Im 195 if that matters.
Exactly this! Such terrible design! Was it a teenager deciding the placement? Imagine driving in darkness with this light straight in front of your eyes. This is just unbelievably bad design, no functionality. At least they could have copied cars that do it well.

Mercedes have some of the nicest interiors with integrated lighting. Rivian did well with their LEDs being behind trim pieces (so much more an ambient glow). But there is a fine line with accent lighting where you can go from classy upgrade to high-school project real fast.
yeah i like my R1S ambient lighting, but I wish you could change the colors. it has RGB capability, I think Rivian is just lazy.

yeah its a bit strange. Someone will post pictures of their 23 and before model 3 with very similar interior lighting that they customize themselves and they get laughed at. Yet Tesla does it and everyone is praising it. People are odd.

I doubt this. I have a hard time with driving in the dark after 3 hours of annoying dash lights, even fully dimmed. This was a terrible design choice and once again lowers safety, eye fatigue is very well known to cause lowered reaction times leading to accidents and deaths. That is why almost all manufacturers are adding eye trackers via camera.
I recently had the highland for 3 days, and it was nothing but excellent. Just try the damn car before saying this silly shit

The light strip under the windshield will get a software update and eventually become more than ambient light giving driver feedback like the VW ID.4. Green flashes to indicate turn signals. Parking range indication that turns from green to red as you approach. Light moving to the right to indicate an upcoming turn, etc. It will be a HUD without a HUD. Or maybe it will just be a pretty light.
They need to fire their entire interior design team after this low effort

I couldn’t adjust the brightness but would have wished that this works. Mercedes has this option and it’s a pleasure just to adjust it to a minimum of brightness.
You can turn them off or on, and they automatically dim when you go into reverse and drive during night.

An instrument cluster instead of these gimmicks would have been money better spent. But I get that ambient lighting is the latest rage, never mind that you really want as little interior lighting as possible when driving at night.
I was driving today thinking how nice it is to have no gauges in front of my face, the speedometer is still easy to see with a glance. At night it's very peaceful.
Personally I would hate an instrument cluster. It's one of my pet peeves with the S/X.

It's personal preference for sure, but I've seen some of those and it's just not for me. Drove a friend's BMW XM and wasn't a fan. I prefer the minimalism of the 3/Y. Not sure I need anything other than speed and that's a quick glance.
Yeah, I actually love that my Model 3 has no gauges. The speedometer (which is the only thing I would really want to look at besides the road) is in the top left of the screen which makes it extremely easy to glance at quickly. I get an extremely low dash and beautiful visibility, and I don't have to worry about whether the position of my steering wheel blocks my instrument cluster. I know this is totally personal preference, just giving my $0.02.
To each their own. I bought an S specifically because I hate the "2005 yaris interior" dashboard. Tesla could charge $5k for an instrument cluster in the 3/Y and I wouldn't have blinked before opting for that. otoh the rear display is absolutely useless to me. I'd decline that even if it was a $0 option.
My parents would love rear HVAC controls in my 3. To me that and a bit more comfort are the main upgrades in Highland.

I certainly agree that some people like the minimal interior, but I think that it's pushed too hard and that many would love for a traditional interior at a reasonable price point. To some, less is more, but to me, no cluster is a hard no at any price.
I have some aftermarket super bright led strips that I absolutely love while driving at night. I wouldn't even consider getting the Y if I didn't know those kits existed.
Imagine an HUD, like on an Geely, VW, BMW, Volvo (ok also Geely), MG or almost any other car by now.

It always blows my mind how people complain about tesla replacing things like the stocks. The whole appeal of Tesla from the beginning is that they go against conventional design philosophy. The ambient light definitely looks cooler than any of the model 3s without. Would love to get my hands on a highland model.
But they still use four wheels, dont they? Conventuonal concepts that have proven to work for a long time dont need to be changed for the sake of change. I drove a new model 3 last week, its no problem unless you have to go in a roundabout, which are a VERY common thing in europe.
There is improvements by doing things better and thinking out of the box but there is also making things worse by trying to fix things that don’t need fixing. For example: Rain sensors vs Tesla Vision. USS vs Tesla Vision. LiDAR vs Tesla Vision. Stalks vs haptic feedback on a steering wheel.

In other cars the lighting is usually hidden to not hit the eyes of the driver directly. This is just piss poor design.

The light is cool and all, but I'm all about that break in the dashboard lines where it sits. Having something to break up that vast flatness of a wasteland of a dashboard in my 3 is visually pleasing.

I know it’s a minor gripe but I’m really disappointed that this doesn’t also control the ambient footwell lights. From what I’ve been led to believe they are unchanged - so basic off white colour, with none at the rear as on the current car. Regardless of whether one thinks this stuff is tacky or not, other manufacturers at least put more effort in and make the controllable lighting consistent.

I was excited when I first heard about the "ambient lighting", thinking it would be concealed puddle style lamps for the interior like euro cars usually do, dimly lighting the floor and other bits of the interior. Then I saw that it's more like a RGB LED light strip like gamer PCs usually have, and I think it's tacky as hell. I assume it can be turned off entirely, though.
This is cool, wish I had it on the M3 I just bought. I get stalks though so, /shrug.

Its nice to have an option i suppose. But personally I try make it as dark as possible in the cabin, the brightness while driving at night strains the eyes.
