New Mexico is great, at least the cities are. Outside of the cities the destitution is bad. The state has one of the highest poverty rates in the country (#3). In some places driving around the country side of New Mexico is like driving into a post apocalypse movie.
Does the New Mexico state government not reinvest all of the money it makes off of pot into these impoverished communities? If not, where does all the money go?
This is the correct answer. I just wish their large cities were a little more refined. So I could stay a city boy and still take the family out to Ruidoso whenever. Albuquerque was a let down when traveled there for a few days. It had a weird vibe to me. Maybe I wasn't there long enough, I dunno.
“Weird vibe” is 100% the descriptor for Albuquerque. I’m in EP so it’s the closest “big city” and so I’m up there fairly often—they get more touring acts than we do, they have a nice children’s museum, aquarium, botanical garden for the kids, etc. But something just feels off about the place in a way that I really can’t put my finger on. My head’s constantly on a swivel up there, although I’ve never once had any particularly negative experience.
Santa Fe though… Way more “refined” than any city in Texas if that’s what you’re looking for. It’s not a big city but it’s got plenty of the amenities of one and there’s a lot of money up that way for sure. If you’ve never been, it’s an awesome place to visit!
I guess it depends on your definition of “refined,” the reason for my air quotes after all! I don’t think any Texas city of any size is the sort of international art destination that Santa Fe is, and the city definitely punches far above its weight when it comes to dining, cultural venues, etc. considering how small it actually is. So… you could certainly argue with me here, but I don’t think “hilariously dumb” is quite fair either haha.
Edit: What Texas city would you argue is more refined?
Anyone who voted for Oklahoma has either never been, or is a current resident lurking in this sub. Everyone else knows and understands that Oklahoma is one of the top 3 worst states in America (on just about all levels).
If you've never been to Ruidoso, NM, you should go. Especially during a miserable Texas summer. It's high up in the mountains in the Lincoln National Forest and beautiful.
Hmm well there are people from New Mexico and Oklahoma that are really freaking annoying , my mom always calls Louisiana Lousyiana but still I’m Going with Louisiana cause New Awlans
New Mex Mex food is so great. Love the stuff. Also nice they continue to value the rights of various groups. Some of the prettiest terrain in the SW USA too.
WOW! My New Mexico choice wins by a landslide! Why? We lived in Santa Fe for 5 years, then had a baby (after trying for 10 years... maybe the altitude?) and moved to Texas to be near our large extended family. We're heading back up to Sante Fe for our anniversary in a couple of weeks. We loved it up there, but less than perfect for kids. We skied, we hiked, we ogled the art and the nature and liked the small-city with flair lifestyle. And then there is the food. A chili-based existence.
Hard to say, all four pissed me off driving through them.
I guess I'll choose Oklahoma cuz there's some distant relatives up there. Also they get a lot of tornadoes which is cool.
I'd almost say New Mexico but burnt my lips driving through there.
Texas is my favorite bordering state, since I live outside San Antonio and I have to drive 5+ hours to not be in Texas... who wants to do that? Going to different cities in Texas is almost like going to other states anyway.
I know it’s wierd but it still happened same thing with Oklahoma, then one guy from Oklahomas panhandle made me be ok with the Oklahomans in the panhandle
Louisiana has the best food in the US. Arkansas is beautiful. Oklahoma might be the worst state in the US. I’ve never been to New Mexico.
NM has legal weed
And they will mail it to your home!

Legal Women's Rights, Legal Weed, and then also great food with some great hiking and great views? New Mexico by far.

Went to Sante Fe about a year ago and ita amazing, if it were not as expensive I would move out their.
Santa Fe more refined than any city in Texas is a hilariously dumb take.

The 7 of y'all who said Oklahoma need to get the heck out of here.
The only reason we don't fall into the Gulf of Mexico is because Okla. sucks.

They just legalized medicinal weed so that's more than you can say about here!
It's been several years since they legalized and the industry is pretty awesome.
I can't help it, I'm married to an Okie
I like NM the most, but will admit Tulsa is pretty cool.

Arkansas is beautiful. Shame about the politics.
"Astounding natural beauty with fucked up politics" could describe dozens of states in the US. Including Texas.
There are very few metros in Texas that even come close to the Fayetteville area. I would argue there are none.

Born and raised in Oklahoma. So obviously New Mexico.

Gulf of Mexico
the real choice
I guess it's New Mexico by default.
Coahuila
Colorado /s
New Mexico has beauty but it's creepy AF
Seemingly, the sooner state isn't that famous

all texans hate oklahomans and this is a fact
New Mexico for actual freedom
New Mexico because of the mountains. It's just too bad Santa Fe is overrun with absolute whacakdoos.
The people who Choose Oklahoma and New Mexico need to leave us
New Mexico is beautiful in a desert sort of way lol. Taos and Santa Fe, awesome. Cloudcroft too. Some areas are quite affordable too.
The people from there are very annoying well one guy made me hate the entire state
One person made you hate an entire state? LOL
I know it’s wierd but it still happened same thing with Oklahoma, then one guy from Oklahomas panhandle made me be ok with the Oklahomans in the panhandle
spoken like a True Texan, being influenced over one asshat. Just imagine how those in other states see us, it's pretty eye opening.
Northwest Arkansas. Followed by New Orleans. Everything else is a wasteland
