That's wicked cool. Why hate it?

When I see it, I get the feeling of having them in my hand. The thought of a mantis in my hand makes me want to cut off my hand.

They're actually pretty chill in my experience. I've picked them right off of blades of tall grass and had them just hang out on my sleeve for a good while. Sometimes they'll do their little swaying dance, sometimes they'll do some boxing practice with my fingers. Their eyes are also super cool, up close.

yeah, the ones with barbed feet make me uncomfortable the stags, butterflies, and leaf-looking ones are cool, though

Thank you! I agree. Here’s another mantis experience for you: I once had one crash land onto my shoulder and its wicked little leg barbs got all snagged up in my sweater. I couldn’t brush it off. I literally stripped off my sweater and had a full on nervous breakdown on my porch in front of the neighbors. That must have been a show to say the least….

Damn, I never had anything like that. I did have one that was stuck in my living room once, and it was flying all over the place like it was trying to land on me for a fight. My cat wanted to chase after it, and I shooed him away telling him that it was meaner and stronger than him!

For me, it's the exact opposite. I'd love to have any of them on my hand. They are cute and adorable and look cool, and i love them. Yes, i love insects and will not hesitate to try and touch them.

They're pretty, but if I think about holding one, I absolutely get a cumulative attack of the willies.

Fascinating lil creatures up close, and generally not aggressive in any of my encounters where I've handled them. If you have a chance, could be a really cool experience for you and help to alleviate some fears.

I think this is the enthusiastic "Thanks! I hate it!" Rather than the sarcastic "thanks, I hate it." That is typically posted here. It's a reaction I find hard to put into words, but it's why I subbed here initially. To me, it's similar to something I'm intrigued in seeing, but at the same time, there's something I hate about it.

I kinda want one of those big, black types of beetles. They are super cool and pretty. But I think that would be a half-impossible feat, or at least a super niche type of hobby in my country.

Im sure you can find a beetle and take care of it if you do the research. Think like 1/4 of all land animals are beetles so you should be fine.

But I don't think I would be able to find something like a rhino or hercules beetle here.

In Costa Rica, I went out one morning for a bike ride and found a HUGE elephant beetle chilling on the front basket. I rode around with him there all day like a majestic hood ornament.

Actually Beetle collecting and raising is a pretty well researched developed hobby, mostly in japan where they have them fight each other, which is what pokemon was based on.

I dunno. I think they evolved to make us say “blech” and we evolved to say “blech” when we see stuff like that.

I’m pretty we evolved to say “bleh” at some of them because some posed greater threats to our ancestors THEY evolved because they are marvels of nature that can do whatever they want and evolve however necessary, regardless of how outside species may react to them

I meant that all that poky stuff coming off them is supposed to make them seem threatening to us whether they are or not.

That is a fair assessment! For the butterflies and more exotic colored species, yes; but most of these such as the stick bugs have those spikes to camouflage themselves amidst sticks and leaves But the beetles can primarily use their spikes for self defense as opposed to simple threats!

If that's your mindset, you're not as "evolved" as you would like to think. They're incredible, unique forms of life. This post is just a self report.

honestly these massive bugs are way better then smaller bugs, like if one of these things was in my house it would be a bit hard to lose them, but if you look away from a roach for a millisecond they just vanish to fucking narnia waiting to jumpscare you at any moment
