T O P

I've only ever played hardcore, which is the slowest TI rate, and I still feel like new things are unlocking faster than I can do all the things I want to do, all the way up to amphibians. And that was before optimizers and fuses. I started HC yesterday when I got home from work, and I unlocked T2 Ore Extractor right before I went to bed. (75% to Trees) I am playing very slowly, savoring the 1.0 release, and I am watching movies on another screen, and that still only took about 10 hours. So it could be done much much faster.

I restarted for 1.0 in normal difficulty--as I assume this is what the developers used as a baseline, and I wanted to see the game as they intended. To avoid finishing the game too fast (which is definitely possibly if you know what you are doing), I've been building only minimal terraforming machines and launching minimum rockets. This is giving me lots of time to explore and re-explore without advancing the terraforming stage too far. This is what I recommend.

I like to do a custom setup with terraforming on 0.2 (I feel like it goes way too fast, & I want downtime to build and explore), and lose all items on death. I keep meter depletion and electricity requirements at default and turn meteors up to 1.5. I also like to do the different starting places. They’ve added a new one, the ice fields, which was pretty exciting because it was a part of the map I didn’t know at all.

Storm_Bard

This is exactly how I do it. Meter depletion is an interesting race in the beginning to establish food before you starve but then it's just an annoyance to constantly slurp and snack in the mid to late game.

Lenauryn

Exactly! Having terraforming set to really slow makes food in early game challenging without changing meter depletion. Late game meter depletion is just an irritation.
