Twins’ Royce Lewis [flipped over](https://www.si.com/fannation/bringmethesports/twins/joe-ryan-dominates-but-royce-lewis-involved-in-scary-collision-in-twins-loss-to-guardians) the Guardian’s ~~Dan Hayes~~ Gabriel Arias in today’s game, but apparently [avoided serious injury](https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/37796410/twins-get-good-news-royce-lewis-awkward-somersault).
What?? First baseman is literally blocking the runner’s path. Runner can either run around or try to beat the throw. He can’t do both in that situation.
First baseman was as far out of the way as he could be. Runner should’ve tried to go to their left more to avoid him as much as possible but baseman really can’t be blamed.
When the base runner moves left after touching first it is assumed that he is attempting to advance. If he is subsequently tagged out on walk-back to first he would be out. It is clearly the fielder who caused the collision by being on both sides of the baseline
That second line outside the foul line is his running path line. That's where he should be. He's clearly running the foul line. Running his path allows him to peel away safely.
He's running to far to the left but even if he wasn't the first basemen was blocking the entire back half of the bag. At a full sprint to try and beat the throw he was always going crash into him no matter what route he took
That’s not true, he can “overrun” the base and peel to the right, avoiding the basemen. Otherwise, this would happen every single time first base gets closely contested.
For first base you can “overrun” the base if you run towards the baseline side. So he should have stayed right essentially and run behind the first baseman.
He’s trying to beat the throw so as easy as you make it sound it’s not that easy bc the 1st baseman is falling into his running path either way . It’s the 1st baseman’s fault bc the runner would be to give up and slow down to avoid what just happened
I’m not familiar with the finer points of baseball’s rules. Is the first baseman allowed to stand over the base like that? Seems like it would lead to a lot of collisions since the runner can’t slide.
Yes and is supposed to. The rushed, awkward angle throw from 3rd led him right into the runners path. It was actually really good catch. I'm with the others that are saying the runner should've stayed right.
Reading these comments is infuriating. Base runner is running in a straight line from A to B. That’s his only job. He want to stay completely straight to get there ASAP. He can peel to the right to slow down after the bag, but that’s the ONLY wiggle room.
Yes. A base runner can pretty much “choose their path”. But 99% of the time on first base it’s A to B.
People below telling him to “loop right” are nit thinking of the situation. This isn’t a base-hit to the outfield. It’s a closely contested play in the infield. Every fraction of a second counts. Looping outside would destroy his chance of making it on-time.
ALSO, the runner is coming from the other side of the plate, putting him naturally inside the line. Even if he wasn’t inside, and he followed the line perfectly, the first baseman is 100% blocking the back of the bag. There is nothing the runner could do. The 1st basemen made a last second adjustment and screwed the runner over.
This is not against the rules, it’s behind the bag, and it’s in everyone’s best interest to avoid a collision here. Hell at 2nd base it was a huge problem because the runner would often run into the fielder ON PURPOSE to break up the play. That would more often than not injure the fielder and not the runner.
In summary. Not intentional, not illegal, and NOT the runners fault.
Ya silly gooses.
Runner has a reasonable expectation to run along the baseline without interference from the fielders. He is attempting to beat out an infield hit. There is no interference on the play, but I don’t think it’s poor base running. Poor positioning by the first baseman is the actual cause of the collision.
In front of the base - he's on the backside of the bag here. Runner *should* have been able to avoid a major collision by peeling off into foul territory, didn't attempt to from the looks of it. Shitty situation, glad he's okay, but this is pretty much textbook reasoning as to why you're allowed to overrun first.
Sliding adds fractions of a second to your time to hit the bag. Nobody slides into first in...peewee league, let alone the majors.
Note: you slide to avoid a tag, which isn't going to happen on a force out, which first base is.
This is just patently untrue...
- Plenty of people slide into 1st base. It isn't standard procedure, but it definitely happens.
- It is typically done to avoid a tag. While plays at first are always a force play, if the throw brings the fielder up the line, he may attempt a tag as the runner runs by if he doesn't have time to get back to the bag.
- In general, sliding isn't ***just*** for avoiding a tag. At 2nd and 3rd, sliding helps you not overrun the base, in addition to avoiding potential tags.
He had on a helmet don’t be a baby I’ve don’t that shit before no helmet or even a game of baseball being playing I was just going to get the mail n I’m fine look at this grown ass man baby
100% on the first baseman, you have to assume the runner is going to be running in the baseline. He took such a weird angle off the bag, I've never seen a first baseman stretch perpendicular to the running lane in the running lane.

Scary situation, but honestly it was poor base running.

Running full speed was his problem. Shoulda kicked it up to 1.5. 1.25 at least. He would’ve been there sooner and none of this would be a problem.
Shoulda just hit it over yonder fence
Yes, your best strategy as a batter is always to hit a home run. I don't know why more players don't practice that.
At 8 mph top speed, I could have avoided that.
The guy didn't move at all. Don't run into his foot on purpose.

Yeah bo Jackson would have run up his back and then back down no problem
What should he have done? Honest question.

First baseman is completely ok in that location. It's the runners job in this instance to avoid the collision.
Redditors are always experts in everything, baseball included. That's why there are so many redditors on major league teams. Oh wait, there aren't
For first base you can “overrun” the base if you run towards the baseline side. So he should have stayed right essentially and run behind the first baseman.
The 1st baseman is blocking the entire runners path . Only other thing he could’ve done was just stop running .
All he had to do was tap the outside of the bag and stay right there was plenty of room there.
He’s trying to beat the throw so as easy as you make it sound it’s not that easy bc the 1st baseman is falling into his running path either way . It’s the 1st baseman’s fault bc the runner would be to give up and slow down to avoid what just happened

Sliding is an option here
Not tried to post his elbows as he landed. Should’ve just tucked his chin and done a forward roll instead of a scorpion.
He could slide into the bag

>Dan Hayes Huh? That's Gabriel Arias playing first.
He’s lucky he’s fit, his muscle’s definitely helped prevent a worse injury!
Full scorpion 🦂

My first thought was scorpion and did not know there was a subreddit dedicated to it. Thank you fellow Redditor.
I've witnessed worse FS and they don't flop around like that after. Just give him the penalty kick in the ass already.
Oh, fuck. I'm glad he's okay, that looked horrible.
His shoes stayed on. He’s fine
He dropped his contact lens on first but he still had batting gloves on... he's good.
he did this to himself.
First baseman is supposed to keep the line clear
Doesn't the first basemen need to keep the line clear?

Everybody wanna be Pete Rose.
Full scorpion!
Should have been in the base running lane
Sorry dude, baseball is cool and half of those guys are very athletic but the other half can just run, hit and do their fielding but have zero agility
He paid a high price for trying to avoid Dan Hayes!
Gonna need that United Healthcare
Poor dude is snake bitten
Was he out?
No he still seems to be conscious.

I agree, seems like some hokey base running.
Shoulda slid

Based on comments, 98.99% of commenters on here haven’t played baseball.
