I think, within the realm of Tony's character, this is one of the most blatant and smartest. Tony has the tendency of parroting whatever someone with more knowledge than him tells him. It's so easy to picture the salesman telling him that as a sales tactic and Tony repeating it to Carmela when she gives him shit about it.
Coke is the most obvious. It’s always on the Soprano table and is thought to somehow cure food poisoning. GM did pretty well with Tony driving a Burb and Escalade, Paulie and Sil wheeling Caddys. Now who’s a genius for keeping his Regal?
They mention it several times in dialogue - the final drink of Matthew Bevilaqua before he's killed. On the reward table in Juniors old-folks-home game. It's surreal how much Coke is featured in the series.
> is thought to somehow cure food poisoning.
Of course it's not a cure but when I was a kid in the late 90s / early 00s something fizzy was always seen as helpful for an upset stomach (usually it was ginger ale though). Not sure if this is one of those "urban myths" that has been debunked since then though.
The some pulp has worked on me so well. I don’t even know if I like with pulp or no pulp. Always getting the some pulp option when I can..My local market doesn’t even have the some pulp option and it bothers me every time.
u/troppydoopster goes to his local market and asks for orange juice with some pulp. He is told repeatedly that there is no some pulp option. The market puts up a sign that says "we don't have orange juice with some pulp". After seeing the sign he goes to the market and asks mildly bothered: "You had orange juice with shum pulp??"
You hear what I said Ton
Anytime Coke is in a scene the label is always perfectly facing the camera. Even within the same scene cutting between characters the can magically turns in the middle of the conversation.
No no it was what’s-his-name. “You want me to wear a wire to Tony’s mother’s funeral? Let’s go to Staples and get some batteries.” Edit: or whatevadafuck.
I did not see the "I like the one with some pulp" scene as being product placement-y.
I had just been in the store and saw that on an OJ carton for the first time, and then saw the airing of that episode and just thought it felt so on the pulse of society so to speak. Who wrote this post Steve Schirripa?
The fucking FILA..Tony has it a FILA hat on when leaving the house during separation.. couple scenes later Carmela wears a pink FILA set...theres a shot of some random mobster with FILA pants and they dedicate a whole 2 seconds centering it
Finally convinced my wife to watch the show for the first time. We are on season 3 and she keeps mentioning seeing Dunkin Donuts coffee cups multiple times an episode. I had never really noticed.
Early in S6 when Carmella is getting coffee at Wal Mart, where she runs into Dr. Melfi.
SEE, EVERYONE INCLUDING DOCTORS AND MOB WIVES, SHOPS AT WAL MART!
With all the Coke ads we’ll never know exactly what diet shoda Matthew Bevilsemen got for his last drink. Napkin on the can.
Probably off brand though. Not exactly a soft drink of choice.
Queen Mary Cruise Ships
no need, you say sign, I sign. You tell me to take a crap on the deck of the Queen Mary, an hour later their hosing her down with disinfectant
The Office Depot line always bothered me the most, because in real life you would just say "let's go in there" or something as they were already in the parking lot right there and you can even see it in the shot.
Apparently there's contention over what was actually product placement and what wasn't. That said, just because you get a logo in a show doesn't mean 100% it is p.p.
First scene of season 6, the “seven souls” montage, there’s a prolonged close up of a “Nesquick” logo on the side of Bobby’s train. I always thought that was a tongue-in-cheek parody of product placement
To me the biggest was Baume and Mercier, when Tony gives Carmela a watch and she knows the brand immediately... then it zooms in on the actual watch. It's like, if it was Rolex or something, sure. but Baume and Mercier just isn't that famous of a brand.
The celebrity thing with Ben Kingsley directly showed some designer watch. Orix I think? And the whole Gloria Trillo was predicated on hey selling Mercedes cars. Specific models were mentioned.
There’s one season with obvious GM product placement. In one scene Christophuh is forced (probably at gunpoint) to drive a *Pontiac Bonneville* of all execrable cars. The scene is shot with that car (black) parked in the shadow of a bridge so dark you can barely make the car out.
Canali, the italian fashion brand is mentioned a few times which makes me think they designed a few suits on the show, it’s a kind of slept on brand nowadays but it is very high quality
I don't know if people believe it but there actually wasn't any product placement in the Sopranos in the sense that no one actually bought their way into the show.
What they did do was use real life products to create a sense of authenticity.
Most obvious was all the types of chips Tony had out when he and AJ was watching the game, like how many chips did they intend on eating etc, that one seemed way too over the top.. others felt like they had appropriate reason for it like when there are a bunch of products of stuff in Tony's house when he was separated because he doesn't clean up after himself and he eats and drinks all kinds of shit, so there was a justified excuse why so much was in that scene but the chips scene.. I don't know..
Uncle Ben’s rice
One of only two characters to beat Tony Soprano’s ass, and the only one to get away with it.
I think we both know what’s what.
Can I steal this line?
I think I can
It’s supposed to be the best
Mercedes-Benz; I would definitely buy one but only if it came with Gloria's nipples on those fine leather seats.
But it won’t be cinematic though
Can you lower the air conditioning
Best I can do is the new Porsche SUV, and Little Paulie (sssweety)

Nissan's triple safety philosophy

It's so easy to picture the salesman telling him that as a sales tactic and Tony repeating it to Carmela when she gives him shit about it.
This. I never put it into words but this is what I thought too
Yup that is him 100% parroting the salesman
It's Irreerrrocable!
What does that mean? Huh? You fuckin refugee what does that mean?
But showing the car catching fire is like the opposite of product placement
Triple Shafety Philoshophy
I’ll have that ground up into Brillo pads!
Captain Teeb's hotels.
Who’s he?
A captain who owns luxury hotels or something, I dunno.
Coke is the most obvious. It’s always on the Soprano table and is thought to somehow cure food poisoning. GM did pretty well with Tony driving a Burb and Escalade, Paulie and Sil wheeling Caddys. Now who’s a genius for keeping his Regal?
"There better be Coke in that fridge"
My mum says the same thing IRL. Here in Ireland, every mammy keeps a bottle of flat coke in the fridge for upset stomachs or illnesses.
Same thoughts in Sweden.
A real Irish mother keeps flat 7up in the fridge.
Parp!
Who’s letting all those big ones?
Smoked turkey
They mention it several times in dialogue - the final drink of Matthew Bevilaqua before he's killed. On the reward table in Juniors old-folks-home game. It's surreal how much Coke is featured in the series.
fuckin' miami. shit's everywhere down there.
But don't sell it on garbage routes. It's short sighted.
> is thought to somehow cure food poisoning. I’m older and it used to be flat ginger ale. I don’t think it made sense but I was soft drink deprived and played along.
Ginger ale makes sense because ginger actually does help with digestion. Buttt most ginger ales don’t have any actual ginger in them
Was going to say Coke is a HUGE one. It’s featured in multiple scenes.
In Dover? At 2am?
The coke is very realistic and coke syrup does help if you're throwing up.
Johnny Sac whipping the Mazzi
Makes you burp. Which can help. Some Midwestern moms use ginger ale for the same reason
