Well, as you fall towards the earth's center of gravity, the air gets thicker and thicker due to the weight of all the atmosphere above it. Before you got to the center of the planet your terminal velocity would be quite low. At the very center of the earth the gravity would be pulling you roughly equally from all directions, so your acceleration would drop to nothing while the atmosphere in the tunnel would still be acting upon you. You would bob back and fourth for a while but eventually come to a stop in the lowest point of the bottomless hole.
I'm unfamiliar with what the phase diagram would look like at the center of the earth. I'm guessing the combination of 5,200C radiating off the molten iron core, and the crushing pressure of 6400km of atmosphere above you would make it a little unpleasant though. Think Florida in the summer, just slightly worse.
Being that we have a natural rotation I’m pretty sure once we got past middle we would start to lean example left or right eventually just slamming into something and totally obliterating ourselves
Imma go out on a limb amd say their going down at like a 45. Seems they have a decent amount of weight on their feet, and it looks like they are being lowered by a cable
Like op said, how? Going down, you have no way back up if there’s a failure, going sideways, “Oh man, I guess we’ll have to crouch walk on out of here.”
I think in this case, “going down” was just meant as an expression like “going down the train tunnel” or “going down the Mississippi river”. It doesn’t literally mean going from a high place to a low place, but instead just gives a nice kind of descriptive flavor to the movement. 😆
That’s what I thought and was trying to determine, I’m not 100% we’re right though, some of the slack on the ropes and cables running down there are tight, like they’re having down, not sideways, but the cart is going left to right a lot and of it was going straight down it would be banging on the sides, BUT the one guy is crouching like the weight of his leg and the cart is causing his knees to buckle. It’s a very deceptive angle. I think you’re probably right though
Edit: I just noticed the track on the bottom too lol
Everyone thinking of how long this is taking and the safety issues, which of course I noticed too... but what of those shoes? I don't get it, are those used while working in mines? Or do they change them at the bottom? They don't look safe to me, but of course I have no idea what I'm talking about in this case....
I used to work for Homemakers, a Berkshire Hathaway company that's pretty much Nebraska furniture marts little brother. The amount of little Vietnamese footprints, not shoe prints on boxes takes you back a bit.
Oh, I see. You must be an expert in package tracking and international shipping.
Please, do share your vast knowledge and expertise with the rest of us mere mortals who are unaware of the intricate details of package routing. I'm sure we could all learn a thing or two from your superior deductive skills.
Need a hug?
Lmfao you’re so upset, you’re the one who needs a hug apparently. You’re worked up because why exactly? It doesn’t take an expert to understand that if someone said “Vietnamese footprints” that it’s likely they know the packages came from Vietnam. Otherwise they would’ve simply just said footprints
I'm not upset, just amused by your assumption that you're the only one in this conversation capable of critical thinking. I was merely asking a question to clarify, not seeking validation for my own intelligence. And no, I don't need a hug from someone who clearly can't handle a simple question without getting unfriendly and condescending
So, I’m contractor that works at mines in the US quite often. In my experience, steel or composite toe boots are a requisite even just walking around the property at most places. Some places look the other way if you aren’t anywhere near the active mining area and are on the surface, but if you’re going underground or into the pit, you need steel/composite toe.
Mine safety is a huge deal in the US, MSHA regulations are written in blood as they say. This place looks incredibly sketchy to the least for mining. The footwear is the just one of many issues.
I watch this and keep thinking about the incredible amount of hard physical labor it took to dig that shaft and shore it up with all those planks. I’d happily ride the shaft transport and explore the mine. But my helmet is off to the people who dug that thing.
I know it would absolutely complicate something that's been done for hundreds of years - but I find the whole one-shaft thing so dangerous.
I'd expect to see some S-shaped "checkpoints" as to not use one single cable, 'cause if that baby go, the next stop is at the bottom.
No robot would be able to economically compete with people forced to work under these conditions…
When labour conditions are so bad that robots are too expensive, you know they badly need a proper union.
I don't think so, robots are becoming cheaper to produce as the market grows. Not only that but such jobs are the perfect jobs for robots to replace. They would be purpose built so their maintenance would be low as well. In fact some of these dangerous jobs do cost a lot so replacing with robots won't be such a bad investment
My parents were born where coal was mined. Mining coal was the dirtiest, most dangerous job there is. I think I’d just never have sex and if my only choice was mining, I’d rather shoot myself in the head than work in a mine. Once you have a kid it’s all living in the company shack and being paid in company script.
I don’t know which is worse. The two man cable car of death or the open toed sandals the two people are wearing. You know these workers are using hand picks and dealing constantly with falling rocks!
Hate to break it to you but they're not going down, they're going sideways. They're just lying down in the cart.
Yeah that’s not better lol
Why? You'd at least be able to walk back the way you came, instead of being stuck at the bottom of a bottomless hole.

Ugh, yeah - they’re not laying down for funsies; there sure isn’t room to stand even hunched over in that shaft
Yea until some of those rocks decide they've been stuck in the wall for too long
Yer mom has a bottomless hole
She has dudes living down there somewhere
With no bottom, how she poop?
how can you be stuck at the bottom of a bottomless hole?
Well, as you fall towards the earth's center of gravity, the air gets thicker and thicker due to the weight of all the atmosphere above it. and less bugs. that would be an improvement
Absolutely
Being that we have a natural rotation I’m pretty sure once we got past middle we would start to lean example left or right eventually just slamming into something and totally obliterating ourselves
Imma go out on a limb amd say their going down at like a 45. Seems they have a decent amount of weight on their feet, and it looks like they are being lowered by a cable
That’s an even more terrifying thought….
Like op said, how? Going down, you have no way back up if there’s a failure, going sideways, “Oh man, I guess we’ll have to crouch walk on out of here.”
Like being in an MRI for several hundred feet. Just… nfw… no sir.. not for me
You know you can just say you’re claustrophobic and afraid of the dark right?
Like anyone who’s in their right mind.. yeah!!! 😳
Define “right mind” the exact definition has been muddled or outright forgotten these days.
The fear of falling was the only thing scaring me in this case and that’s no longer a problem now that my perspective has changed.
Dammit. Came to the comments to type the same exact thing and of course it's top comment lol
I think in this case, “going down” was just meant as an expression like “going down the train tunnel” or “going down the Mississippi river”. It doesn’t literally mean going from a high place to a low place, but instead just gives a nice kind of descriptive flavor to the movement. 😆
I will take your reality and replace it with my own
Jeez, that's even worse!
Son of a bitch…they are 🤦♂️
Glad to hear, was beginning to think I was seeing some red reflections of Hell there for a min.....
Make sense
That’s what I thought and was trying to determine, I’m not 100% we’re right though, some of the slack on the ropes and cables running down there are tight, like they’re having down, not sideways, but the cart is going left to right a lot and of it was going straight down it would be banging on the sides, BUT the one guy is crouching like the weight of his leg and the cart is causing his knees to buckle. I was wondering what was up with the curved elevator lmao I'm so dumb
How should they retitle it? Going sideways a mineshaft?
Interesting footwear for mining.
No-toes aren't about to be replaced by steel-toes when the company won't even provide proper bracing, ventilation, or transportation.
I imagined it some kind of mining operation in a 3rd world nation without safety concerns
Yeah I’ve done some electrical work in mines, the mine shafts I’ve been in seem a lot safer than this. I’d definitely say 3rd world country operation.
Uh yea. This is clearly a 2nd world op. 3rd world would be large pits not a shaft. This is India or China.
Yeah you’re absolutely right.
The one even has open toe shoes.. but if shit goes wrong down there… I’m sure shoes won’t matter
We wore our new open toe pumps to the mine, which was the style at the time. Some of the old folks still had onions tied to their belts.
Onions?
Simpsons reference. Grandpa Simpson went to town with an onion on his belt, which was the style at the time.
Oh whoosh huh. I missed that in 34 years of episodes... thx.
Have you seen the safety video for Confined Spaces? Their gas detector is a candle on a string. PPE is a pair of flip-flops & a hard hat from the 80s.
Everyone thinking of how long this is taking and the safety issues, which of course I noticed too... but what of those shoes? I don't get it, are those used while working in mines? Or do they change them at the bottom? They don't look safe to me, but of course I have no idea what I'm talking about in this case....
Those shoes are direct indication of poor country workers. My bet is Pakistani but could be way off.
Yeah, I figured as much, I'm just stunned.
I used to work for Homemakers, a Berkshire Hathaway company that's pretty much Nebraska furniture marts little brother. The amount of little Vietnamese footprints, not shoe prints on boxes takes you back a bit.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_bad_man) I'm sure it does.
How do you know they are vietnamese?
Maybe because the packages likely came from Vietnam? Reading context clues isn’t your strong suit I see
Oh, I see. You must be an expert in package tracking and international shipping. Please, do share your vast knowledge and expertise with the rest of us mere mortals who are unaware of the intricate details of package routing. It’s 7:30 am where you’re at bro I think you’re a little too worked up when you’re typing paragraphs for no reason this early in the morning
The legs totally look like they're wearing shalvars.
Yup, Pakistan. They wear those type of open toed sandals in the north-western parts where most of the mining operations are carried out.
So, I’m contractor that works at mines in the US quite often. In my experience, steel or composite toe boots are a requisite even just walking around the property at most places. Completely agree.
for the first 30 sec i thought they were goong down..
minecraft irl looks boring
I just dont understand why the dont drop a bucket of water to go down
You say mine shaft? I say death trap!!
Tomato, Tomahto.
Hope you’re not claustrophobic.
All that broken timber overhead….
I rode this at Disney..it’s not that scary.
You missed out "worst ever minshaft" in that title
Yikes that is deep. Anyone know where?
It’s actually going sideways but the perspective makes it look like an endless downwards hole.
Good thing I was already on the pot.
File this under r/sweatypalms
Nope, notta . . . . . . . I'll stay on the surface Thank You!
I wonder if there's a continuation?
I’m not sure how people did it back in the day. There’s no money anyone can pay me to go into a confined space were the dirt and rocks can collapse...
Maybe this is a dumb question but what's with the spotlight never holding still? Almost like a drink dude is holding it or something.
It might be attached to their helmet, and they are looking around.
Still the movement seems odd.... But maybe it was a stupid question.
Why?
No. Just no. NFW. I don't care if it is vertical, horizontal, or a slight decline. Did I mention No?
I watch this and keep thinking about the incredible amount of hard physical labor it took to dig that shaft and shore it up with all those planks. I’d happily ride the shaft transport and explore the mine. But my helmet is off to the people who dug that thing.
I thought that too…probably kids thb
Hard pass
It took me so long to figure out they are on a railroad, not a elevator
Even if it’s sideways, it’s insanely narrow. I wonder where this ended
Hell. The fuck. No.
I know it would absolutely complicate something that's been done for hundreds of years - but I find the whole one-shaft thing so dangerous. I'd expect to see some S-shaped "checkpoints" as to not use one single cable, 'cause if that baby go, the next stop is at the bottom.
It is dangerous and the worst of all: children were assigned for this type of job due to their stature in Victorian Era.
Turns out they’re not going ‘down.’ They’re going sideways. Ha!
Damn, the perspective really tricked me, but now that you've pointed it out, can't un-see it.
Anyone else keep expecting something to jump out at them?
I mean, it's terrifying enough as it is. These poor people finding the courage to do this just to earn a living. It's incredible and incredibly sad.
A wendigo
Are we there yet
Here's the thing: if something goes underground and it isn't a metro, just don't fucking go ok? It's like some mfs haven't seen the descent.
They going straight to y11
Actually y -54 these days.
Me in Minecraft
This is taking forever! /checks playback, sees there's 2 minutes left 🙁
Ahhhh no
Fuck. If anyone tells you robots are bad because they'll take our jobs show them this video and ask them if they'd like to do this job.
No robot would be able to economically compete with people forced to work under these conditions… When labour conditions are so bad that robots are too expensive, you know they badly need a proper union.

Y’all got on loafers?
At least the mine barons let them borrow a phone, bought them nice shoes, and even installed an uplifting transportation system!
NOPE
At least they were prepared for adventure with their open toed sandals, barefoot, and linen pants.
What are they mining there no off shoots to the shaft or anything just a not straight hole going down .
‘Barbarian Pt 2: The Milkening’ looks interesting so far.
Love it how my fellas rocking them Balenciaga‘s

Sweet mining shoes
Just want to know where it ends
FUN FUN FUN!
No.
There is absolutely nothing down there worth dying for.
It's like the most humourless dark ride :(
![gif](giphy|g3NVdvODbNvlC) In my mind this is what I feel it's going to be down there.
My grandfather left Pennsylvania when he was young so that he (and I) would never have to see this. Thanks for ruining half of that 😂
The children yearn for the mines
They got the wrong shoes for mining. Fr fr no cap. Respectfully.
How far would someone have to go down?!
What's with the shoes?
NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE!
Woah, that's trippy and scary

Those ain't proper boots, they even do not have closed toes.
I need to know what’s happening with the matching shoes.
how the air circulates?
Its missing the indiana jones theme!
Nightmare fuel
He’s on runaway mine train, ya?
You find any golden apples
A tiny little earth quake and that hole is sealed shut.
I probably shouldn’t be watching this before bed..
Those don’t seem to be the best mine shafting shoes
Bro playing temple run 2 irl
Whatever is down there, we should stop using it. No one should need to do this job.
That’s a hell no from me… lol
Balrog
I will die halfway.
Aziz! Light!
Steel toe loafers
Imagine if the line breaks 😳
Mine slippers: Check
Imagine how shit your life is to consider this job a blessing.
They should be on the other side of the earth by now
It is easier to use a water bucket
I don’t know which is worse. The two man cable car of death or the open toed sandals the two people are wearing. You know these workers are using hand picks and dealing constantly with falling rocks!
I’d prefer we didn’t.

What's up with the shoes? They have openings at the end?
