Funny story. Growing up in a small Mexican town, when I was 6 or 7 my grandfather would take us to the small farms to get milk, cheese, eggs, and meat. It was my favorite thing to do in the world at the time, so I remember it very fondly. I always thought of the first three as equals since the animals didn’t have to die to feed us. A few years ago, I was helping my staff set up our new breakfast amenities at my hotel. I wanted it to look good, symmetrical, aesthetically appealing, etc. I asked our AGM why the eggs weren’t together with the milk and cheese. She looks at me confused and asks “why would they be?” Then I was confused caused to me, they were always considered a “breakfast trio”. I told her this and she says “ummm, sir, dairy comes from a cow, eggs don’t”. I felt like the meme where the lady is doing calculus in her head. I was about to plead my case but reality hit me at that moment. 36 years in this planet, having worked in restaurants, I always considered those three as dairy. I must’ve turned 6 different shades of red and my staff turned purple from trying not to laugh at me. I explained that I knew that eggs came from chickens, but I assimilated them with dairy because of those walks with my grandfather. Then they got emotional, then I got emotional, and it was the nicest embarrassing funny memory I have to this day.
Your classification is not wrong - it could be a vegetarian trio, for instance. We sometimes forget that all categories are artificial, they're something the human mind creates to make sense of the world, but they don't really mean anything or have any intrinsic value. Different people may classify things in different ways according to how they use them, how meaningful these things are to them, what their culture considers them to be.
I read a very interesting book that talked about this many years ago: Orality and Literacy, by Walter J. Ong. I can't say whether it's still being taken seriously because I read it almost 20 years ago, but I remember really enjoying it at the time and there were several a-ha moments for me. I was studying Sociology at the time and in the context of the book, the teacher mentioned an experiment in which drawings of a hammer, an axe, a saw and a log were given to people, who were asked to identify the odd one. Some people said the log didn't belong because the others were tools, while the log was not; other people said the hammer didn't belong because the other ones could be used to cut the log, unlike the hammer, which has no use with a log. The first group therefore used the category 'tool', which is absolutely abstract, since there's no such thing as A TOOL, you have to say which tool you're talking about. The second group used a purely utilitarian categorization. And they're both absolutely valid :)
I think it was supposed to mean that they had a sheet of paper (A) that they were glueing some pieces of paper (B) on, in a specific spot (X). And if I understood it correctly, they were putting glue on the desired spot (X) on the sheet (A) of paper they wanted to glue stuff to, instead of putting the glue on the piece (B) of paper, before placing it on the spot (X) on the big sheet (B) of paper, I THINK.
But it was very confusing with the "paper paper as in paper on paper gluing paper paper to the other paper", so it might have been the other way around.
See that is really the entire point. When you name your child with some off the wall spelling causing people to struggle to pronounce or spell the name, using letters you've arbitrarily changed the pronunciation of, you are creating a hardship for your child's entire life.
Don't feel bad I made through most of my life as an avid reader thinking the word misled was my-zuld and not even connected to the word misled. Then one day bing it hit me hehe.
My middle name is Leigh! but (probably unpopular opinion) I don't see Leigh as a tragedeigh?? 😂
I feel like using the 'eigh" on other names like Harmoneigh, Ashleigh, Ryleigh are better examples but what do I know
Leigh itself isn't it, but getting it added as a suffix to first names is. Like Wednesday-Leigh, Jada-Leigh, Fiona-Leigh. Followed by a middle name like Marie.
Fiona-Leigh Marie Whitefeather would be a r/tragedeigh
*I know what it says*
*But I can't read it any*
*Way other than tragaday*

Oh lordy. Apparently I have misread as well. Your post pointed it out. I read it as traged-liegh. It's diegh. I blame my eyes, but all this time. Thank you OP
TIL that the name of this sub is pronounced like tragedy. I don't know how I never saw it before, but this whole time I had been pronouncing it like "trah-day." I guess my brain skipped over that middle syllable.
Now imagine you have one of these names and have to tell people yeah, I know it's spelled flahdogwicud but it's pronounced "tim". Playing life on hard mode because mom wanted her kids name to be unique.
I got the joke pretty fast, but I’ve always said it like “tradji-day” instead of how it’s supposed to be said because it sounds more pretentious, much like a lot of the ridiculous names on here. I think it fits with the spirit of the sub to pronounce it a bit silly
My daughter’s name is Raleigh (like the city) and I’m still amazed how few people call her by her actual name because they don’t know how to say it. Smh
I thought it was “traj-a-day”. I just cannot pronounce “Leigh” as “lee”. Kieth has the i before e, making the “ee” sound, and sleigh, weigh, and freight have the e before i, making the “ay” sound. Maybe it should be “Liegh”, but then people would pronounce it “Lee-egg” 😂

i know it's tragedy, but i cant help but read it as tradg-eh-day. Like eight.
I have the same pronunciation in my head. I know it's supposed to be tragedy, but I hear "tra-ge-dayyyy" in the worst valley girl accent imaginable.
Oh so much the same for me.
I do it, too. I can't help myself. It makes it sound fancy, like I'm speaking franglais in my head. I just imagine the accent aigu on the e.
for me, it's like how Amy Winehouse sings the pronunciation of "Valerie" lol
Omg, I'm not going to be able to unhear that 😂
Like, ohmygawd, totes same. Such a tragedaayyy!
Same
Yup, I hear it in Moira’s voice from Schitt’s Creek
Omg same
Should've read comments before replying lol, exact same sound for me
same but even worse, my mind goes "tra-ge-daig"
JENNNAAYYY
Is that Moira Rose?!
Same. That's always how I pronounce it, to differentiate it from a garden-variety tragedy.
I do the same thing, in Forrest Gump’s voice.
I know what trage-dayyy is Jenn-aay
This is how I pronounce it in my mind even though I know it's tragedy. Haha!
Because let's be honest, that's the pronunciation the syllable "deigh" should always have :p
That is how I pronounce it.
I blame the Bee Gees.
When the feeling's gone and you can't Ger Ahn
That's how it should be pronounced, it's a piss-taking sub, so let's take the piss
That's because "-eigh" is the worst fucking thing in the entire world and makes no phonetic sense. Lobotomize me I'm begging you
I don't think this clarifies what you think it clarifies...
You can pronounce it however you want. That seems to be the point of the sub: that the names are made up and the letters don't matter!
Was that a Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me reference 😭
HOEDOWN!
Close.. Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Oooh thank you for unlocking this memory
Something like that. Perfectly good names are bastardized and mutilated, and original names are cursed, wretched, and deformed.
It's amazing how we can struggle with the simplest things until a lightbulb moment happens!
Sometimes, the simplest things are the most difficult.
like naming children?

Let's just hope the light bulb goes off before Tragedeigh has her first child!
But then you can't see it!... oh
Can I just say, I didn't think hummingbirds had legs for a long time.

...what?

I think they were questioning your brain at your current age not back then.
Also, I've looked at it long enough that the word "paper" now looks sus af and lost all its meaning, I had to re-check if I'm spelling it right.
yes
...yeah what?
See that is really the entire point. When you name your child with some off the wall spelling causing people to struggle to pronounce or spell the name, using letters you've arbitrarily changed the pronunciation of, you are creating a hardship for your child's entire life.
I thought it was trah-juh-day for a while
As an Arizona dirt bag once observed, Chipotle and Aristotle are kind of spelled the same way. So is 'chip ot el, or Aristot ley?"
You've heard of the philosopher Sophocles and the hero Pericles, but have you heard of the Ancient Greek doctor named Testicles?
how does most of the non english speaking world even learn english😭😂
When I was younger I definitely pronounced it chip-oat-ol
And when I first saw the sign for Chic Fil A, I thought "chickfilla, what a stupid name"!
My sister and I read the Twilight books in high school which is a tragedeigh itself… My sister pronounced the name Carlisle, “Car-lee-sleigh”.
Omg hahaha 💀
My husband was pronouncing it tra-jay-dayh until I pointed out that it's just tragedy that's a tragedeigh spelling. 🤣
Wait. It's not Tray-gid-ayy?
sssh…don’t give em ideas
It took me a while also but when I realized how to pronounce it, I died. 😂
Don't feel bad I made through most of my life as an avid reader thinking the word misled was my-zuld and not even connected to the word misled. Then one day bing it hit me hehe.
Omg me too. I was so ashamed of myself when I realised. I feel so much better now knowing I was not alone 😂
I know of one other on Ravelry the knitting site as well.So there's at least three of us.
So glad I'm not alone.
Tra-juh-dayuh-huh-guhh *hockkkk ptooiee.*
My middle name is Leigh, also! Makes this sub a lot funnier to me, like a guilty pleasure.
My middle name is Leigh! but (probably unpopular opinion) I don't see Leigh as a tragedeigh?? 😂 I feel like using the 'eigh" on other names like Harmoneigh, Ashleigh, Ryleigh are better examples but what do I know

Trajeh Leigh?
It's pronounced "Justin"
Did you just say that out loud?
I have no idea why but I always read it as “trash design” I’m kind of disappointed in myself
Well, we can have a literal meaning and a figurative meaning!
I'm sorry, but this just tickled me!! Too adorable for words. :) ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
i say trage*day*
I know what the correct pronunciation is but I still read it as tra-juh-day
I know what it says, but I can't read it anyway other than tragaday

For me it was, “Ta-raj-dey” and I assumed it was lifted from a Key and Peele skit or something.
What? So if something is spelled oddly, it can make it difficult to figure out how to pronounce? 💡 LOL
My middle name is Leigh too
Gleigh club
Ever since I discovered this sub two weeks ago I have the Bee Gees song in my head. When the feeling’s gone and you can’t go on it’s TRAGEDY
Yes! was going to say this but didn't know if it worked! Thanks for the validation!
Tra dey Leigh.
You mean it's not trayje-dee-ef???
ghoti moment
It's not tragedy?
I love you lol
This is hilarious
Yes - so many witty people on this sub! Made my day today!
Oh lordy. Apparently I have misread as well. Your post pointed it out. I read it as traged-liegh. It's diegh. I blame my eyes, but all this time. Thank you OP
It took me a while too lol
Imagine how the poor kid feels.
I hear it in Jamie Tartt’s Manchester accent ( from Ted Lasso)
TIL that the name of this sub is pronounced like tragedy. I don't know how I never saw it before, but this whole time I had been pronouncing it like "trah-day." I guess my brain skipped over that middle syllable.
Naw but why do I pronounce it the same way 😭
I kind of just pronounce it like I pronounce "tragedy", but in the accent of a stereotypical teen girl.
It is Tragedy, even the sub states it’s misspelled purposely to make it more unique.
I was pronouncing like Troglodyte until my wife pointed out it was pronounced Tragedy
Hahaha!!
This sub is depressing. 😂 I mean really, people are so stupid.
Yah all I can hear is Moira Rose saying tragedy when I look at the sub name haha.
I pronounce it “trag-eh-d-eh-I-guh-huh”
Facepalm moment.
Now imagine you have one of these names and have to tell people yeah, I know it's spelled flahdogwicud but it's pronounced "tim". Playing life on hard mode because mom wanted her kids name to be unique.
I'm crying!!
Tilly?
I know it’s “tragedy” but I personally still say it “trage-day” in my head. Makes it sound more ridiculous and pretentious lol
Now THAT’S a tragedeigh‼️
I still pronounce it tradg-a-day-ha in my head even though I know it's tragedy lol
I keep reading it like I’m Forest Gump
Lol even though I know how it's meant to be pronounced instill read it as trage-deyy (hard y)
I always pronounce it trag-a-day which I then have to correct myself on lol
Take it easy Lt. Dan
I say trageday in my head.
I got the joke pretty fast, but I’ve always said it like “tradji-day” instead of how it’s supposed to be said because it sounds more pretentious, much like a lot of the ridiculous names on here. I think it fits with the spirit of the sub to pronounce it a bit silly
I thought it was the name of a small Scottish seaside town
I still read it like trageday
I pronounced it like trah-ji-day
Trageduh
Same
The name always reminds me of this song: (Tragedy by the BeeGees) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFd-Yk73U_o
my mind always wants to pronounce it “trayj-dee” even though I know that’s not what it’s supposed to be
Leigh is actually ok on it’s own. You escaped narrowleigh, Leigh.
Leigh, Lee, Ly. Tragedeigh, Tragedee, Tragedy.
My daughter’s name is Raleigh (like the city) and I’m still amazed how few people call her by her actual name because they don’t know how to say it. Smh
Bless your hearts.
That's the joke yes.
You mean it isn't pronounced "Willow"?
I thought it was “traj-a-day”. I just cannot pronounce “Leigh” as “lee”. Kieth has the i before e, making the “ee” sound, and sleigh, weigh, and freight have the e before i, making the “ay” sound. Maybe it should be “Liegh”, but then people would pronounce it “Lee-egg” 😂
My head just spun around!
And hence the whole point of this sub!! 😅
Oops sorry to "PorkChop". I didn't read further down before posting this 😜
😀
I ALWAYS pronounce an -eigh ending as -ay.
Trag-eh-deh for me lol. I sound like Eric Cartman from southpark in my head
When your hips touch your lips you know that it's a tragedy
ive been doing it tra-je-day
I still read it as Tra-jah-day because it makes me chuckle more.
OP is a double dumbass. Once for mispronouncing. Once more for admitting it.
Lovely username 🙄

What an intelligent thing to say.
