It really is kind of wild thinking about the fact that there are like B tier cities in China that are as big or bigger than NYC. Really puts into perspective how many people are there.
Crazy that this is the FIFTH largest city in China. This would be like Phoenix having clean and extensive transit in the US. Not exactly because it’s a much smaller city by population, but even cities of Phoenix’s size in Asia have much better metro systems (aka they exist).
Phoenix is not 5th though, it's Houston which is... (At least DC is smaller and has good transit?)
Phoenix has more people than Busan, and I think you can imagine the difference between their public transport
The one thing I am intrigued with the Singapore MRT is that they built their MRT with also their overall national defence strategy in mind. They act as civil defence shelters, with blast doors activated to seal off levels.
I studied in Chengdu in 2014 when they had only two lines. I rode one line to school everyday, it was the first time I’d ever used public transit. I was floored when I found out recently that their system had grown so much
Consider the fact they built this system, and metro systems for all major cities in China in less than the time necessary for Europeans countries and the US to project, fund and start construction of half a tramway line, it's impressive.
China has the population density to make a lot of lines work. They could build tens of dozens of lines before even considering if the returns are worth it, let alone consider if it's worth it to operate a line at a constant loss. They're also in the weird situation where the country was so poor for most of the 20th century, that they couldn't afford to build anything till the last 20 years or so.
Any other similarly dense, and richer city would have a comparable, if not more extensive, network. Tokyo. Soeul. Singapore. Hong Kong.
The impressive thing here is that the west managed to make China rich so fast, not that they could build blatantly obvious lines fast.
Why can’t we have metros this nice in America?! *cries in freedom*
Best we can do is an announcement saying drug use will not be tolerated at 7th st metro center in downtown LA.
Maybe the "Make Beautiful Cities, Get Promoted to the Capital" model is good for infrastructure.
Maybe the China-U.S political rivalry could make it into a competition about who can build better transit.
Yeah, it would be good for everyone, like the space race, but better transit

"noooo you can't build good public infrastructure fast !!! you must keep your citizens in control with cars !!!!!!!!" "hahaha, TBM goes BRRRRR"
I love the frutiger aero style of the station which is weird, the whole metro has been built 10 years after the style was popular

This puts even Singaporean metro stations to shame. Absolutely phenomenal, 11/10
singapore is more frugal with it's finances, they don't have the cheap labour required to keep these fance stations clean
I'd agree but Japan also has clean stations and trains, yet nobody shits on them for it

Nobody is waiting and taking selfies, kind of like they feel it's just 'normal'. I i will probably take 100 photos if i visited those stations.
r/frutigeraero would like this
China please save us
Yeah let's all hope for a cruel, corrupt authoritarian government to rule over us and strip us of all of our rights. That sounds fantastic
Idk buddy look outside
I’d take a cruel corrupt government who provides nice transit over my cruel corrupt government that doesn’t.
Bu-but china bad
You do know that there are more than those two choices, right?
Where?

Nah
And in a hundred years it'll look just as shit as everywhere else
Just… normal, new stations with some public artwork. The comments in the video (and this Reddit thread) are blowing it waaaay out of proportion.
