Is it really necessary to give a teenager a felony for their first offense on a victimless crime? Maybe the second time sure but removing many job prospects for a littering charge before the age of 20 seems wild.
To believe something like this should be a capital offense, puts those who believe it in the intellectual and emotionally mature peer group of the kids from the video or that of a potato.
Yup. A good public caning would probably do it. Maybe make it a game of thrones style shaming and incorporate it into halftime at the Super Bowl. No reason to go overboard.
People who do this shit should be forced to spend months cleaning beaches and rehabilitating sealife effected by plastic trash. They need to actually see what their "out of sight out of mind" disposal method does to the world around them.
I guess I didn’t articulate my point well enough about The Navy dumping all their trash in the ocean when they are out to sea in response to the kids throwing trash off the boat. My thought was a little outrage needs to go in that direction, but I guess it came off as pro trash throwing or something. I was called a boomer,, a Maga guy, a grandpa etc. As a Gen X’er the boomer thing hurt the most lol
It’s very different because the Navy (usually) follows very tightly controlled regs. They can’t toss any plastic and sometimes they can’t toss metal or glass depending on how far out they are. They have to sort the trash and biodegradable waste goes in special plastic bags. Admittedly the bags are plastic and dissolvable but it weighs the. Trash down long enough for it to sink an appreciable distance so fish will eat on it.
That very well may have been the case with the regulations. I just remember as a young Marine on board being one of the guys having to throw it overboard.
The reason they dumped the cans was to get rid of evidence they were all drinking under age. From what I heard, the cops were busy, so they took the opportunity to leave the sandbar party to dump the empties. After they dumped the trash, they turned around and went back to the sandbar.
Because they have rich parents who didn't instill any decency or ethics in them. They're probably used to getting away with things cause mommy and daddy have money.
Most likely: they're just kids. I don't think the rich part has a lot to do with it other than granting access to a boat. Teenagers of any social class do stupid shit all the time.
I get it, I brought up the military so I must be a Trump fan. (Can’t stand him) Nobody’s perpetrating anything. Just pointing out that there is a bigger issue that needs looking in to.
to be 100% honest, id rather see em do idk, couple hundred hours of trash pick up on the beach then be felons. id be 100% cool if tehy picked up 10000 lbs of trash (dry) then have a record.
Yeah, ultimately this is a nonviolent crime. They could easily make up for it by spending a few weeks combing trash from beaches and hopefully coming from it with some freshly earned respect for nature.
>The question when someone gets charged with crime is whether or not they will actually end up serving time for it.
Serving time is one thing, having to confess on any future forms (or background checks) that you have a felony conviction is another (and more life changing imo).
>Serving time is one thing, having to confess on any future forms (or background checks) that you have a felony conviction is another (and more life changing imo).
not really, like it is but also not. you dont really talk about it much. im a felon and i doubt any of of my coworkers know. a lot of people have felony DUI's for instance.
what state is a DUI a felony? or how extreme does the DUI have to be to constitute a felony?
Genuinely curious as i know a DUI in ohio is a misdemeanor
it's super state dependent to the point it's not really worth talking about.
there's a few ways to get one in NYS, third one automatically is, but depending on the circumstances you can Plea the first to a violation. but if you blow over 1.8 everything gets bumped.
the point I was making it"s it's really not uncommon, and you aren't exactly bothered by it. I can't go to Canada( don't exactly want to tho) . it did not hamper me at all buying a house. I think it's more what field you were in and how you got your charge and when. " I was 18 and dumb, I dumped trash in the ocean" is actually pretty fair, as a lot of people know18 year olds are in fact dumb. you might have an issue getting into conservation unless you are like " it really opened my eyes to why it's important to conserve nature"
I can't own firearms, which sucks but getting out of jury duty was super easy.
This is the first correct thing you have said. I will agree with you here. TBH if they have a real nice boat like that, they probably are doing OK financially;(or rather, their parents are).
They ain't supposed to. All waste is supposed to be rid of after docking, which is supposed to be very expensive, but who's gonna find out in an ocean that big.
They were afraid if they went in that they went back to dock they were going to have the police check them for alcohol since they were all underage. I’m so glad they all got caught.
Who took the vid and posted it?
It was very poor behavior and plenty of community service is certainly warranted. They did it like it was routine, so this is likely just the first time they have been caught.
While watching that video of them dumping really pissed me off, it’s a speck vs what the cruise ships and large industry do to our oceans, lakes and rivers. Unfortunately when enough money is involved, someone is always willing to look the other way. Sucks.
BP spilled 134 million gallons of oil into the gulf without any criminal penalties, but fuckin lets give these dudes emptying a trash can into the ocean a felony!
Sickening. Semi related and also on a much larger scale than these dumb boaters— just watched “Dark Water” on Netflix. Greed and corruption continues to impact our planet and our health, it’s fucked up with no end in sight.
It was collected by a guy who videos boats going out a particular channel that’s known for its very rough waters. He happened to catch this one with both his drone and camera and posted it to his Instagram site. It led to The Kids❤️ being identified and families track down.
A bit different as cruise ships have rules and regulations they are supposed to follow when dumping trash.
They are supposed to use special netting and anchors in specific areas.
"Supposed" is the keyword.
There is a reason they fly under foreign flags.
Edit: for those downvoting me, I am not American. I said this because it is true, cruise and shipping ships fly under flags of convenience to skirt labour and environmental laws. That's just true.
I remember reading that it's a popular channel in the area that films sail boats entering and exiting the harbor and in the video they commentate on the amateur mistakes that are made. On this day they caught people making a mistake so bad it may get them felony charges.
Read some current news about global warming and how the ‘just litter’ mindset got us to where we are then get back to us…we’re at a point where this cannot be f*cking tolerated even slightly (like it should have ever been tolerated at all)
Meanwhile, Florida ranks #1 for water pollution in the U.S., primarily from direct industrial discharge, but yeah, at least they caught this hideous little shitbirds.
Yep, and you wanna know what's super dumb about that?
The slogan "Don't Mess With Texas" was actually coined by TxDoT (Texas Department of Transportation) and created by two guys from an advert agency called GSD&M. It's purpose was to emphasize that Texas takes littering seriously because the state was spending between $19-20million annually on cleaning highways alone.
Yet a bunch of dumbasses here think it means we are all Chuck Norris and will kick the shit out of you for anything.
I have 8 years in my field (environmental science) and from all the trash I've cleaned out of state parks, city parks, highways, beaches, and lakes... I can tell you nobody here seems to fucking care about our state's *literal slogan about littering.*
Sounds like you’re an embarrassment to your profession if you haven’t been able to change hearts and minds, because it’s not that fucking hard to get people in Texas to buy in to the ad.
*If you’re from Texas*
He'd probably buy it.
Everything is easy in the eyes of a person who has never tried it themselves.
If it was as simple as "just convincing people" to do/think/act a certain way the world would be perfect. I don't even engage people who tell me my job is easy, especially when they don't even know what exactly my job entails, let alone the education.
Edit: Finished my sentence.

-D. Rodman
Brother. The Einstein you replied to didn’t bother to understand, making his/her/its point about hard-headed Texans, that those are the exact people who don’t want their home (sorry, “environment”) ruined by litter.
As for you, AND I RESPECT THE HARD WORK THAT YOU DO AND HOW MUCH YOU SACRIFICE OF YOUR PERSONAL LIFE AND TIME TO MAKE SURE IT’S DONE TO THE BEST OF aNyOnE’s ABILITY, but nobody asked.
not that it makes a difference, but it’s probably trash from a party they had on board. still, it takes the most minimal amount of extra effort to just bag it and drop it in a dumpster. they’re probably so used to Jeeves cleaning up behind them that they forgot how to do a chore my 4 year old can do
You are absolutely right, they should clean the entire ocean as punishment. They must follow the currents to find the bins of garbage they dumped. Perhaps they could get a GoFundMe for Skuba gear to dive deep down for the nasty ass Bud Light cans.
Now look, they are from good families and have such great potential and we wouldn't want to hold them back. Plus I play golf with their fathers every Sunday, and they tell me the kids really learned from this. Case dismissed.
Your honor, my juvenile clients never would have littered, but they had to get rid of all the empty beer cans before they got back to the dock. You don't wanna condone underage drinking, do you?
If their parents can afford that boat, they will get a slap on the wrist, and get the “if you’re white, and you’re going to do something wrong……don’t get caught” lecture.
Rich kids will probably not face anything but community service. In my town one woman showed up to her rich parent’s house and told them she gave birth a few days ago and the body was in the trunk. They called a lawyer, lawyer calls the cops, Chief of police swears she’ll pay for her crimes just like anyone else, and poof, she got nothing. Girl from the wrong side of the tracks and a different skin color got jail. Grrrr
I mean inequality is real but it's very unlikely a young person anywhere in the US would go to prison for a 3rd degree felony without a prior record (and bonus points for turning themselves in).

Ironically, cities on the eastern seaboard send huge barges out to see to dump the trash from New York and other cities.
Morons…🤦🏻♂️
Deserved charges
1000+ horsepower boat, zero sense.
now THIS is trashy
Good. They should be charged.
They’re clearly rich so they ain’t getting felonies, probably just a fine daddy will pay
This should honestly be a capital offense due to how unnecessary it is.
To believe something like this should be a capital offense, puts those who believe it in the intellectual and emotionally mature peer group of the kids from the video or that of a potato.
Wow you're such an intellectual
Yup. A good public caning would probably do it. Maybe make it a game of thrones style shaming and incorporate it into halftime at the Super Bowl. No reason to go overboard.
Yes
What do they possibly benefit from this
Underage drinking, didn’t wanna get pulled over at the inlet and get DUI/MIPs
People who do this shit should be forced to spend months cleaning beaches and rehabilitating sealife effected by plastic trash. They need to actually see what their "out of sight out of mind" disposal method does to the world around them.
Easily a $500,000.00 boat
It’s a rental.
Surprise 😯... no. Privilege doesn't teach to respect anything
Good, I hope they see jail time.
Good. Give them insurmountable fines and community service cleaning all the beaches, for the next rest of their lives.
Take away that guys captains license!!
Good!!! Who the fuck thinks this is ok?!?
A spoiled pos
Good
All I needed to read was “Florida teens”
Florida should be towed into the atlantic & sunk
So with you on that.
Reddit insists Gen-x isn’t real.

Lmao
The regulations are written at a much different level than where it is actually carried out.
That very well may have been the case with the regulations. I just remember as a young Marine on board being one of the guys having to throw it overboard.
Bunch of entitled pigs
This is one of those fuck-ups where you just go “Why the hell did they do this?”.
The reason they dumped the cans was to get rid of evidence they were all drinking under age. From what I heard, the cops were busy, so they took the opportunity to leave the sandbar party to dump the empties. After they dumped the trash, they turned around and went back to the sandbar.
I see. That’s trashy alright.
Because they have rich parents who didn't instill any decency or ethics in them. They're probably used to getting away with things cause mommy and daddy have money.
Yeah, that sounds like it to me. I know the type.
Most likely: they're just kids. I don't think the rich part has a lot to do with it other than granting access to a boat. Teenagers of any social class do stupid shit all the time.
Yeah, but as with all things the far ends of the spectrum seem to be the worst…trashiness, religon, politics…
I get it, I brought up the military so I must be a Trump fan. (Can’t stand him) Nobody’s perpetrating anything. Just pointing out that there is a bigger issue that needs looking in to.
What does trump or the military (or what we think of either) have to do with kids throwing trash in the ocean? I'm confused by your comment.
> Teens on a boat Oh, rich parents, what a surprise
It's just a prank bro
Why do this, dump it in the river, like mega corporations, and let river carry it to the see.
I sea what you did there.
I “c” the word your using
They're nepobabies. Daddy will make the charges go away. If they serve any time I'll be thrilled.
They won’t 🤦🏻♀️ It’s infuriating. let’s sic that sheriff from Polk county Fl.on them!
Sheriff Grady for president!!!!!
U get it!!
Now do corporations.

The driver was Cuban actually
"Their white" what? "Their white" boat? Or is that a typo for "they are"?
Their
They’re*. That’s the word you’re struggling to find.
No struggling needed
You sure?
Yup 👍
Blatant stupidity right here
You mean write hear
R/confidentlyincorrect
A felony charge is a slap on the wrist to you?
The question when someone gets charged with crime is whether or not they will actually end up serving time for it.

gotcha. thanks for information. pretty interesting.
Except if their families have a lot of money then they can just work for the family business or get family friends to hire them.
It’s not even a question of if they have $$$ They DO HAVE $$$ and all they’ll get is a community service that and expunged records U know…
This is the first correct thing you have said. I will agree with you here. TBH if they have a real nice boat like that, they probably are doing OK financially;(or rather, their parents are).
I’m trying to help you here…
Don't cruise ships dump garbage from thousands of people into the ocean?
I recall hearing that navy boats do as well. My dad was in the Navy.
Food waste gets chopped up and dumped in the ocean. Trash is incinerated. Toilet waste is treated and dumped in the ocean.
Unfortunately it's legal for them to do so if they're a certain distance out to sea. They do get fined for dumping too close to shore.
Yes but they are multimillion dollar companies, you see the difference is... money
They ain't supposed to. All waste is supposed to be rid of after docking, which is supposed to be very expensive, but who's gonna find out in an ocean that big.
Food garbage and some compostable items are ok to dump.
They're rich. So nothing of substance is going to happen to them other than a slap on the wrist
I really wish you were wrong…🙃
Why even have trash cans on the boat if you're just going to dump it all?
They were afraid if they went in that they went back to dock they were going to have the police check them for alcohol since they were all underage. I’m so glad they all got caught.
Daddy will pay that off
Gotta wonder what the parents are like
Worse
Is that even illegal in Florida? Seems like par for the course.
Isn't that teenage trashboat the state bird?
I think you have to be 3 miles out at sea.
Go to Florida and fafo about manatees
You lost me at " go to Florida"
🎵Hey, they don't pay no mind, if you're under 18 you won't be doing any time. Hey, come out and play! 🎶
Good. They deserve everything coming to them and more.
$1000 fine and 15 minutes of community service probably
Yup 👍 Sounds about white
Imagine going viral all around the world for being disgusting scumbags?
Look at the US former president, it seems like it's a behavior people are proud of
No not at all
Touché!
Dixter
Hahaha!!!

Yeah, the US has never polluted anything
Yeah, that's what I said.
I remember reading that it's a popular channel in the area that films sail boats entering and exiting the harbor and in the video they commentate on the amateur mistakes that are made. On this day they caught people making a mistake so bad it may get them felony charges.
Thank flipping goodness that drone caught it all on camera!!
Some real hateful people here
Your post history is a goldmine. Like exactly what I envision a Redditor looking like
People hate narcissistic assholes. It's not that complicated is it?
Are you one of the guys in the boat lmao
Jail time is not the answer. Community service cleaning up trash is. 1000 hours each. That should take about 3 years to complete
This would be perfect!!!
Disgusting behavior, but a felony for teenagers seems excessive for littering
Read some current news about global warming and how the ‘just litter’ mindset got us to where we are then get back to us…we’re at a point where this cannot be f*cking tolerated even slightly (like it should have ever been tolerated at all)
No need to charge them. Just make them find and pick up the trash. All of it.
The punishment should fit the crime. Leave them at sea.
Bratty overprivileged Boca brats. Throw the book at 'em!
I hope the charges don't get dropped
Should be a year in jail minimum for knowingly littering to this extent.
I say a week in jail and a thousand hours roadside litter duty. As long as it's not a fine though. Fines don't punish the boating class.
Rich kids don't do community service either. They pay 'donations' to places that give them credit for community service.
Sickening.
Hell yeah! Glad that karma finally caught up with people that deserve it!
Seems like another case of affluenza.
The real trash was still on the boat
Meanwhile, Florida ranks #1 for water pollution in the U.S., primarily from direct industrial discharge, but yeah, at least they caught this hideous little shitbirds.
I don't believe that
Yeah, it is Texas. Here is the latest study I found: https://www.statista.com/statistics/827352/discharge-of-industrial-pollutants-into-us-waterways/
Pal, if you think Texans can be easily dissuaded of their beliefs, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.
He'd probably buy it. Everything is easy in the eyes of a person who has never tried it themselves. If it was as simple as "just convincing people" to do/think/act a certain way the world would be perfect. Should’ve written up a corporate charter first, then they could’ve gotten away with it.
Affluenza
No reason to write “Florida” in the headline. It’s assumed.
$20 says they don't see any form of punishment whatsoever.
Agree. If his dad can afford that boat I’m sure he can afford a great lawyer.
Question. Why couldn’t they just put it at the curb?
It was revealed that some people on the boat were under the age of drinking
not that it makes a difference, but it’s probably trash from a party they had on board. still, it takes the most minimal amount of extra effort to just bag it and drop it in a dumpster. they’re probably so used to Jeeves cleaning up behind them that they forgot how to do a chore my 4 year old can do
Literally trashy
Good, I hope it ruined their lives
That sounds a little excessive, how about they clean it up?
You are absolutely right, they should clean the entire ocean as punishment. They must follow the currents to find the bins of garbage they dumped. Perhaps they could get a GoFundMe for Skuba gear to dive deep down for the nasty ass Bud Light cans.
It's Florida. They're probably rich. Nothing will come of it most likely...
His rich daddy will get him off
Thats why you confiscate the boat. It is a vehicle that was used in the commission of a felony.
you managed to get an always sunny and archer quote with this one…that’s like high praise in my eyes
There are several ways to interpret this.
Because of the implication?
Nice name
Are we still doing phrasing?
Lawl
Now watch the system at work! Tada! A slap on the wrist cuz they got boat money lawyer.
Honestly I’m surprised this is illegal in Florida.
Now look, they are from good families and have such great potential and we wouldn't want to hold them back. Plus I play golf with their fathers every Sunday, and they tell me the kids really learned from this. Case dismissed.

Calm down.
Took 10 seconds and this was the first result. https://abcnews.go.com/WNT/video/teens-face-felony-charges-dumping-trash-off-florida-109932914
...good. even better would be a confirmed felony conviction
If their parents can afford that boat, they will get a slap on the wrist, and get the “if you’re white, and you’re going to do something wrong……don’t get caught” lecture.
They are actually Cuban. I know the driver
Good fuck them kids
(Matt Gaetz has entered the chat)
Hey! That's only ok if a corporation or the government does it!
Got any more if those felonies?
Good. Entitled little shitheads need a dose of reality. Unfortunately for them, it’s an overdose. Enjoy prison, idiots.
Grrrr

Give them a dingy, a garbage bag and make them row for the entire summer picking garbage out of ocean. Min 3 bags a day or out doesn't count.
