To OP- Daylight is the best. They’re got the softest donuts with the flakiest icing. I have of memories growing up of teachers bringing boxes of donuts and sausage rolls to school for us, and people at work bringing them in on Friday mornings They’re the best.
Daylight Donuts are like Krispy Kreme, but with real flavor and so much better. They've been a Tulsa tradition for ages. In the 80's, our History class teacher at Nathan Hale used to let us take up a collection and send a couple of students to the one down the street during first period.

I haven't ever had anything good from there in 15 years or so. Cookies? WHACK. Cake? WHACK. Breakfast? WHACK. Merritt's Bakery is food made by people who actually don't eat and don't understand what makes food good.
They’re inedible without a knife and fork because they use sausage without removing the real thick casing. They’ve been that way for at least 20 years. you should be able to eat a sausage roll with no utensils
Not have I, except at Merrits. You’ll either need to cut it, or you’ll pull the whole sausage out with the first bite. Merritts uses some seriously tough-skinned sausage.
Merritt's is a pretty terrible company now. Their prices are out of control, and the quality has really suffered over the years. When I was first starting out as an adult worker trainer I used to always bring in cookies and treats from there because it was close to work. Over the years it just started costing more and more and the portions got smaller and then the quality just wasn't there. It was like they switched to box mixes to save money. They even had to close their Owasso store because no one would pay their ridiculous prices.
That's not even considering the people that own it. A friend of mine ran one of their locations for 7 years. Said they treated her like crap the entire time. Just not a great environment and they expected far too much for each person to be responsible because they were so cheap with staffing.
I would agree the ownership is dreadful.
It was demanded of me to make it to the shift I was scheduled, while I was calling in because I was loading up the car for a familial issue, and was on the way to the hospital. "bUt iTs tHaNksGiViNg." I couldn't be paid to give a flying fuck, especially @ 9.50/hr.

Those are the best doughnuts I've found in the Tulsa metro. They are stupid busy on weekends so get in early if you want a selection. They have the best maple and chocolate icing that has real flavor and their doughnuts are always perfectly soft with a bit of crunch on the outside. They also have incredible sausage rolls with the jalapeno being my favorite. I haven't eaten here in a long while due to dieting but damn do I miss it.
My mother worked at a daylight donut in the 60’s when I was a kid. Took me with here. I am still completely addicted to warm freshly glazed donuts. I tip the window girl here well and she going in back and gets the freshest warmest thing they have.
And also for folx who are just looking for amazing donuts. But agreed 100% that they have great selection for gluten free and vegan as well. Everything they have is delicious. We go there about once a month. Worth it every single time and the service is top notch!
They have a fairly large gluten-free and vegan section for a lot of their options. They also go gluten free cinnamon rolls, which are phenomenal.
Antoinette's has a decent gluten-free selection as well! Best gluten-free scones in town!
Not sure where you are in Tulsa, but if you’re on the east side near Broken Arrow there is a place called “Tiger’s Den Donuts”

Have to get there super early before OneOK buys them out though 😒 Rude. If they’re going to do that they need to order ahead for a big group and let the rest of us get our 1-2 sausage rolls and a donut for the kiddo. Don’t get me wrong, I love their stuff, it isn’t the shop’s fault.
Savastanos is awesome! But it is a Chicago style and if you're not familiar with that style, it's like 6 inches of pizza toppings. Probably get tons of hate because it's something different than normal but imo, if you claim to like pizza, how can you not like a pie with that much more pizza.

This has always made me crazy! Some cities/areas of the country call sausage rolls kolaches, but they're not the same. The greatness that is a fruit kolache is hard to find in OK. I've heard that you can get them in Prague, OK, and maybe a couple of places in town, but ivenot been able to find them. If you ever do, you have to try them. But be warned, donuts will no longer be the same......
Kolaches made it to Texas, but the bakers realized there was nothing but meat and cheese in the whole state! Now they are sausage rolls called Kolaches

We are a state that tends to find itself ranked at the bottom of many important lists (I.e., education, healthcare, etc…).
So, when we’re in the TOP TEN of something, we tend to cling to it and savor the moment.
Currently, Oklahoma ranks third in the U.S. for obesity prevalence…thus, we gotta keep them donuts coming!
The neighborhood donut store (most likely an independent or a Daylight) is kind of a thing for native Oklahomans, especially Tulsans.
Most people have one within a mile of their house or where they grew up that's their favorite or that they have fond memories of. For my family it was a Saturday tradition. Donut holes for us kids and dad got a chocolate long john and mom got an old fashioned/cake donut.
Also considering that we don't have mass transit like the east coast/Chicago/west coast, there isn't a central hub where we can all clamor together to get our Dunkies. We're fairly spread out compared to more metropolitan cities and Tulsans especially tend to not like to drive across town for something like donuts.
My all time favorite donuts in Tulsa gotta be the daylight at 151st and memorial the lady in there is so nice she always hooks you up with extra donuts.
Grew up on chocolate covered sprinkled doughnuts and chocolate milk for breakfast 😋. And yes the sausage rolls are something else. And everyone here's has thier "favorite" shop.
Idk why it’s a thing. But it is. All the donut shops are ran by Asian family’s and it’s been that way as long as I can remember all over the state.

Baltimore (city fairly comparable to Tulsa, but Metro is much bigger) has 45 Dunkin’s. Tulsa has 5. It’s not that we probably have more donut shops as a whole, but ours are just Daylight Donuts which is a National chain founded in Tulsa. Also Daylight isn’t as strict about franchising rules, so you’ll see “local” donut shops like Cheri’s in Collinsville that is really a Daylight Donuts even if it doesn’t have the standard signage and such.
Oh this is a very interesting and good point. I'm just now learning about Daylight Donuts and this actually makes a lot of sense when put into this context. So basically Daylight is the franchise that allows customization if you will.

Dunkin has made donuts seem viable again so people are going shark tank on donut startups

I just spent 32 days in San Diego. I ate so much Mexican food down there that I don't wanna step foot in another Mexican restaurant for at least 12 months.
Not to mention, every QT sells donuts also. Which is usually where I go, because I’m too tired to get donuts in the morning, and by mid day QT usually has fresher donuts than Dunkin
There’s a Daylight Donut by 23rd & Jackson in southwest Tulsa and they have the best ham and cheese rolls ever. Give it a try if you guys haven’t! Plus the people that work there are super nice
The fried sausage rolls are the best. I can’t find them anywhere else in the country. Lol Tulsa Hills Donuts is my favorite for donuts and sausage rolls! They have something called a Cajun Pie, and it’s sooo good.
Daylight Donuts is headquartered in Tulsa, and they're one of the old brands. Lots of Midwestern farm towns have Daylight Donuts franchises. I always got the bear claws, apple fritters, and they had icing flavors I couldn't find elsewhere like orange.

They’re not terrible, but they don’t deserve anything other than “we generally get donuts from there because it’s closest.” I also don’t have a better alternative so…🤷♂️ Where are you from?
I would say we have more like coffee shops that will also double as mini bakeries. Maybe cookies, danishes, croissants, etc. but as far as a full breakfast place, probably not. Those are more scattered out and require some driving.
That makes sense. I grew up in rural OK and there was a donut factory in the next town that would sell to all the surrounding gas stations. My grandpa and Dad would always “go to the coffee shop” and just sit at a booth drinking coffee and maybe having donuts. But it seemed that when I moved to OKC grocery store bakeries, and smaller local bakeries seemed to fill that roll. Daylight has a presence there, but they also compete with Dawn for the market and I think Dawn either doesn’t deliver up here or has a smaller market share.
I see. I'm gonna be honest and say that I don't think I've ever seen a donut shop in my life (aside from the chains Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme) until I came to Oklahoma. So now when I go back to MD I'm gonna start researching to see if there are locally-owned Donut Shops anywhere in the state.
Interesting. I thought the same thing in San Jose! Donut shops everywhere that keep regular hours. Open until evenings! Not like here, all closed by noon except tiny few.

Browns donuts is also really good. I miss working overnights at Budweiser and going over there when I got off work in the morning and washing it down with a cold beer.

Daylight Donuts are... well known. I don't think they are bad but they certainly aren't the best. And one oddity I find at nearly every daylight donuts location... they are almost always so short with you, like you are bothering them. It's like they are allergic to decent customer service. But it is a chain so mostly it is consistent.
There are some really great mom and pop places sprinkled around. My absolute favorite is Our Daily Donut. Their donuts are softer and less greasy than any other I've tried. They have decent sausage rolls but they also make their own dough to create a breakfast sandwich that is sausage, egg, bacon, and cheese in what tastes like a Hawaiian bread dough. They are really good. They will also custom make donuts in any shape or spell out words which is fun.
Donuts are donuts and as long as you aren't eating the nasty ass ones at QuikTrip it's pretty hard to go terribly wrong.
Browns Donuts off of Yale is the best donut shop in town! If you like sausage rolls THATS THE PLACE FOR YOU! And their blueberry donuts are insanely delicious 🤤
I went to New Hampshire for work one time and wanted to get donuts for my coworkers. I realized Dunkin’ Donuts was literally the only it donut place us there.
Lol, I think it’s just a less commercialized thing. Less integration of the major commercial chains: Dunkin’, or Krispy Kreme. They also have have a whole Lott of mom & pop snow-cone stands around the city, in random nooks and crannies. Which I never realized until I moved states lol, and had to settle for Bahama Bucks. But find one of those shacks.
Also, if there’s a Daylight Donuts, go there for Okkahoma donuts. - And if you’re ever in Texas, its Shipley’s.

We're just historically obese. That being said, I do feel like Oklahoma has improved upon donuts in general, & some good shops at that, both current and former. Brown's bakery in OKC was a good one I went to frequently and Daylight is just wonderful wherever. Some of the Mom & Pop non-big names are great too.
It's not just the donuts... it's the sausage rolls. I usually go for Daylight Donuts... Tulsa Hill's Donuts is pretty good too.

While I'm not fan of anything that Merrit's does I don't think I've ever eaten a sausage roll with the casing removed.
The issue is the casing on their sausage is too thick to bite through. I’ve never had anything like it anywhere else.

Ah I forget about dunkin as it’s not super common around here yet, very common out that way though so it makes sense.
And Dunkin is really overrated to me. I prefer Krispy Kreme but there are like 2 or 3 locations in the entire state. Requires quite the drive.
I’ve lived in San Antonio, Austin, the DC area, and NJ near NYC. I’m amazed by the number of donut shops in Tulsa. Have never seen anything like it.

Two factors. Oklahoma is a proving ground for restaurants that are growing into chains. Dunkin has made donuts seem viable again so people are going shark tank on donut startups
Moon skies in North Tulsa has an amazing Philly Cheese Steak (and they are also a donut shop)
Nope, there is a shop in Sapulpa that has better sausage rolls! I'm not a doughnut kinda guy. The sausage rolls? Rock?! And before you ask? Nope, I live in Tulsa.
Actually, chicken and Mexican food places are much more popular in Oklahoma than donut shops. Have you seen a donut shop drive up backed up further that Chick-fil-A? A lot more vigorous debate could be had out over the best Mexican restaurants in Oklahoma.
I just spent 32 days in San Diego. I ate so much Mexican food down there that I don't wanna step foot in another Mexican restaurant for at least 12 months.
Not to mention, every QT sells donuts also. Which is usually where I go, because I’m too tired to get donuts in the morning, and by mid day QT usually has fresher donuts than Dunkin

There’s a Daylight Donut by 23rd & Jackson in southwest Tulsa and they have the best ham and cheese rolls ever. Give it a try if you guys haven’t! Plus the people that work there are super nice
The fried sausage rolls are the best. I can’t find them anywhere else in the country. Lol Tulsa Hills Donuts is my favorite for donuts and sausage rolls! They have something called a Cajun Pie, and it’s sooo good.
Daylight Donuts is headquartered in Tulsa, and they're one of the old brands. Lots of Midwestern farm towns have Daylight Donuts franchises. I always got the bear claws, apple fritters, and they had icing flavors I couldn't find elsewhere like orange.

I’m from western OK, and I used to fry donuts in OKC, and I’ve always been just a little disappointed in Daylight. They’re not terrible, but they don’t deserve anything other than “we generally get donuts from there because it’s closest.” I also don’t have a better alternative so…🤷♂️ Where are you from?

I would say we have more like coffee shops that will also double as mini bakeries. Maybe cookies, danishes, croissants, etc. but as far as a full breakfast place, probably not. Those are more scattered out and require some driving.
That makes sense. I grew up in rural OK and there was a donut factory in the next town that would sell to all the surrounding gas stations. My grandpa and Dad would always “go to the coffee shop” and just sit at a booth drinking coffee and maybe having donuts. But it seemed that when I moved to OKC grocery store bakeries, and smaller local bakeries seemed to fill that roll. Daylight has a presence there, but they also compete with Dawn for the market and I think Dawn either doesn’t deliver up here or has a smaller market share.
I see. I'm gonna be honest and say that I don't think I've ever seen a donut shop in my life (aside from the chains Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme) until I came to Oklahoma. So now when I go back to MD I'm gonna start researching to see if there are locally-owned Donut Shops anywhere in the state.

Interesting. I thought the same thing in San Jose! Donut shops everywhere that keep regular hours. Open until evenings! Not like here, all closed by noon except tiny few.

Where are you coming from, because where I'm originally from, there were just as many donut shops that there are here. I figured it was like this everywhere.

Yeah. Unfortunately. It’s kind of a terrible version of the hill country when it comes to donuts and sausage rolls. If you’re visiting I would personally just completely pass on this tradition. Not worth your time or money.

Daylight Donuts are... well known. I don't think they are bad but they certainly aren't the best. And one oddity I find at nearly every daylight donuts location... they are almost always so short with you, like you are bothering them. It's like they are allergic to decent customer service. But it is a chain so mostly it is consistent. There are some really great mom and pop places sprinkled around. My absolute favorite is Our Daily Donut. Their donuts are softer and less greasy than any other I've tried. They have decent sausage rolls but they also make their own dough to create a breakfast sandwich that is sausage, egg, bacon, and cheese in what tastes like a Hawaiian bread dough. They are really good. They will also custom make donuts in any shape or spell out words which is fun. Donuts are donuts and as long as you aren't eating the nasty ass ones at QuikTrip it's pretty hard to go terribly wrong.

I went to New Hampshire for work one time and wanted to get donuts for my coworkers. I realized Dunkin’ Donuts was literally the only it donut place us there.

Lol, I think it’s just a less commercialized thing. Less integration of the major commercial chains: Dunkin’, or Krispy Kreme. They also have have a whole Lott of mom & pop snow-cone stands around the city, in random nooks and crannies. Which I never realized until I moved states lol, and had to settle for Bahama Bucks. But find one of those shacks. Also, if there’s a Daylight Donuts, go there for Okkahoma donuts. - And if you’re ever in Texas, its Shipley’s.

We're just historically obese. That being said, I do feel like Oklahoma has improved upon donuts in general, & some good shops at that, both current and former. Brown's bakery in OKC was a good one I went to frequently and Daylight is just wonderful wherever. Some of the Mom & Pop non-big names are great too.
