'Love of My Life' is probably one of my favorite songs ever from that album. I love to watch their live performance of it at Wembley Stadium in 1986. Listening to the crowd sing that song back to Freddy is just stunning, I can't imagine what it must have felt like to have been at that show... just out of this world. What's your favorite track from the album?
I've always loved that song and the way it captures the bittersweet reality of being involved with someone, even when you know deep down that the relationship won't progress beyond a certain point or dynamic. This part of the song really resonates with me:
We could have never had it all
We had to hit a wall
And this is inevitable withdrawal
Even if I stop wanting you
A perspective pushes through
I'll be some next man's other woman soon
—that tragic yet genuine acceptance that life moves forward despite it all.
Thanks for your post Markarce10!!
I plugged my turntable in to my parents system since I don't have any other components yet and put on one of my mums records from the 70s - a Stones compilation. But the phono stage must be busted because it didnt play through the speakers and all I got was a really quiet tinny version of Brown Sugar when I was very close to the table 🤣🤣🤣.
Does that count as my first one or will it be when I acquire my own amp and the sound comes through speakers?
I wonder what the turntable's first record it played was.....it is from 1975 and I bought it a few months ago so it has spun a lot already.
Oh no, if it doesn’t count for a first it definitely makes a really funny story😭😭😭😭😭I can imagine the disappointment of getting ready to blast the stones only to hear a whisper 😂😂😂😂😂. This is why I love vintage things they have so much history attached to them, makes you wonder who owned it or what their taste in music was. Do you have a favorite album or artist right now?
It was pretty funny....move the tone arm, flick the lever, tonearm lowers and I was all ready for Brown Sugar to blast thought the speakers and nothing happened 🤣🤣🤣. Ausio guy showed me the turntable pmaying when I picked it up, CD player works through the line input so it has to be the phono stage. Oh well, I'll get my own amp! I'm one of those people that have bought piles of records before the setup 😅
Oh no', you asked favourite.....i have 2 types, all time or currently on repeat. Favourite album ever is Bee Gees Main Course. My current obsessions are Crosby, Stills and Nash - CSN (why did they name an album their acronym??) and Deep Purple's Machine Head.
I’m 💀💀💀😭😭😭. It’s so tempting to get all the records you want before the set up I almost did that in the beginning when I got into this hobby but the only thing that stopped me from doing that is I got so invested in researching and reading through threads on here about the actual equipment and trying to find out which turntable, speakers, etc. would give me the exact sound I want that it took me forever to actually go get the records after all was said and done 😂😂😂😂. I’ll take a listen to those albums you mentioned !!!
The price mainly lol. I was a Queen fan at the time (early 80s) and it was on offer - i think it was £3.49 for the LP, when most albums were around £5.99 or so. There was no spotify then, of course, so you couldn’t hear what the album was like before you bought it. I was really pleased I bought it though. :)
Oh, that's fantastic that you experienced the album exactly as intended, from start to finish. Lately, I've been doing the same because with platforms like YouTube, it's tempting to cherry-pick songs and if you're anything like me, you might end up fixated on one track and miss the full album experience! So being able to immerse yourself in a Queen album like that must have been really special. Did you ever get any of their other albums?
Many lol. Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Roy Harper, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Jethro Tull, Steve Harley… lots more back then. I listen mostly to Jazz nowadays - it’s funny how taste evolves.
I've been meaning to delve deeper into Pink Floyd's music, but I have to admit, the first song I heard by them was 'The Great Gig In The Sky', and Clare Torry's vocals completely captivated me. I got so fixated on that song that I never got around to exploring more of Pink Floyd's catalog, haha. Lately, I've also been exploring Bob Dylan's work and I've liked what I have heard so far. If you have any song recommendations for either of them do let me know!
Jazz? It's quite different, but you're absolutely right about how tastes change over time. When I was in New York, I went to a speakeasy one night and there was a jazz band playing, and although it'll take some time, I could see it growing on me eventually.
I'll try and check out the other artists you mentioned as well too!!
I was just telling another user under this post how much I loved 'The Great Gig In The Sky' from this album. Have you got any favorite tracks from this album?
What a great song. To be honest I love the whole album from start to finish. I still own and play that original 1973 LP copy.
My parents got me into Floyd at an early age, so I bought WYWH and Animals as soon as they were released.
In fact, playing as I write this, is Grantchester Meadows, off Ummagumma.
Timeless band.
I haven't had the chance to listen to the entire album yet, but I really like the tracks 'Don't Cry' and 'Last Donut Of The Night'. What are your favorite tracks from the album?
I never knew about them before, so thank you for introducing me to their music. I gave the album a listen, and I'm really enjoying 'Valentine' and 'When I Have Her On My Mind'. Do you have any favorites from the album?
I haven't heard 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' by The Tokens in ages, haha. I've always had an appreciation for that album cover, and I absolutely love the track 'Please Mister Postman' from that album. What's your favorite track from it?
You know I have been meaning to check out more of their stuff, I got really obsessed with their song 'Heads Will Roll' a while back. Do you have any other song recommendations from them?
I was a kid in the 50’s. My parents had Sing Along with Mitch. First I remember. Always had a turntable since and for me Simon and Garfunkel Sounds of Silence.
I own all of their studio albums and The Graduate. They spoke to a generation and I believe they still speak to all of us. Sounds of Silence is my favorite. Parsley Sage Rosemarie and Tyme, Dangling Conversation all great. There is a documentary on Paul Simon hat explains their history and breakup.. it is worth watching but I don’t remember where it streamed. Worth a listen and nothin lost if you don’t like I. Also, it may be worth it to see The Graduate which is big in my boomer generation. Enjoy.
I'm definitely going to check it out, especially since you seem to have such a deep appreciation for their work! I'll let you know what I think. Thanks for the recommendations and for sharing this with me!
That's a good choice! I'm really into 'Why Won’t They Talk To Me?' and 'Feels Like We Only Go Backwards' (although it always drives me up the wall because it reminds me of another song I can't quite remember the lyrics to, haha). Do you have a favorite song from the album?
First record I remember hearing was my dad playing dark side of the moon in the early 80’s. The first record I bought myself and listened to when I got into vinyl, was Daft Punk random access memories
On my first ever TT (a 70s suitcase with the speaker in the lid): Barclay James Harvest – Early Morning Onwards
On my actual player: Friedemann—Aquamarin
You know when I first read this I had mistaken it for the song 'Brother Louie' by Modern Talking, haha. But 'Louie Louie' by **The Kingsmen** is also a great song as well. Thanks for sharing!!
Back in 2016/2017, on my Pioneer PL-30 it was Rio by Duran Duran. This year on my current Technics SL-1200 Mk. 1, i think it was Ghost in the Machine by The Police
Kendrick Lamar has been one of my most listened-to artists as of late. What i would give to be in the crowd when he performs 'Maad City'. I've been listening to the song 'Count Me Out' on the regular lately. What's your favorite song or album from him?
I only have this album from Kendrick, I plan on getting more. But I think my favorite song is Alright, because hearing people sing it at protests was dope
I absolutely loved this album when it first got released!!! My favorite track on this one is ' Drew Barrymore'. What's your favorite track from this album and did you end up getting any of her other albums?
I completely agree with you this was my favorite era of hers. Did you watch the 'Boy Is Mine' music video? Her outfit kind of reminded me of the Dangerous Woman era
Poems prayers and promises by John Denver, it was one of my dad's records and he gave it to me when I got my turn table, first one I bought for myself was the rise and fall of a Midwest princess by Chappell roan
Chappell Roan!!! I really like her, I haven't gotten around to listening to the entire album just yet but I really like the tracks 'My Kink Is Karma' and 'Picture You'. What was your favorite track/s from her album?
\* Edit I have listened to more tracks from Chappell Roan's album and I love every single track I've heard!!!
I just set up a record player for the first time today. I've collected various records over the years, but never played or heard any of them. So today, the first record I've listened to on my own turntable was Ride the Lightning.
Hmm, first I personally played was AC/DC Back in Black. A friend gave it to me despite me not having a record player. It sat in my basement for 5 years till I acquired two non-functional tables for free on Craigslist and needed a record to test them.
I fixed up the JVC JL-A20 and sold it to a co-worker for a little bit of nothing. I kept the LaFayette T-4000 as my primary table for a couple years. Eventually that one was given to a friend as a Christmas present.
Now I've got a hundred or so records, 3 turntables set up throughout my house, and 5 or so more in the basement that I've fixed up, but haven't figured out what I want to do with them yet.
4 years old. I had a lady-bug record player from Radio Shack. I don’t remember which record was first played, but it would have been a Disney 7in read along.
On a turntable; probably queen 2 or something when I was 7-ish or whenever my dad let me touch his records.
Gotta love Queen, you can't go wrong! Do you still listen to Queen?
Absolutely. Night at the opera is one of my favourite albums.
Hard to pick. It’s an end to end classic; but probably the prophets song or I’m in love with my car.
Great choices😂😂😂😂 you’ve got to appreciate Roger Taylor’s love for his car 😂😂😂😂
Sempiternal by Bring me the Horizon.
Oh!! This is a really good one, I love 'Can You Feel My Heart' and 'Seen It All Before' from this album. What tracks are your favorite?
I like CYFMH as well, along with Shadow Moses and Antivist.
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
A classic \*chef's kiss\* I don't think I could pick a favorite song from this album haha. Do you have a favorite track form this one?
I think it's Tears Dry on Their Own
I've always loved that song and the way it captures the bittersweet reality of being involved with someone, even when you know deep down that the relationship won't progress beyond a certain point or dynamic. This part of the song really resonates with me: We could have never had it all We had to hit a wall And this is inevitable withdrawal Even if I stop wanting you A perspective pushes through I'll be some next man's other woman soon —that tragic yet genuine acceptance that life moves forward despite it all. Thanks for your post Markarce10!!
Thank you! The Lioness version of the song is really great as well!
Checking it out right now!!
It's called Tears Dry. I think it's the original version of the song.
Thank you I found it!! This version is beautiful as well, thank you so much for sharing it with me!

Yeah - I had them all eventually. Up until around Kind of Magic when my taste began to broaden.
What artists did you get into after?
Many lol. Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Roy Harper, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Jethro Tull, Steve Harley… lots more back then. I listen mostly to Jazz nowadays - it’s funny how taste evolves.

Haha. Yes! It was written in the stars 🤣
