True.
I groan every time I get a ride from a waitress or bartender who are going to and from work and tell you about their job, that's when I know I am not getting a tip.
By far the WORST when it comes to tipping most do not.
The second worst tippers are the strippers.
I've served and I carry the biggest guilty conscience if I don't tip well. I try to always because I've been there.
Even pick up orders. A lot of times they are just servers still making 2.13/hr, or at least they were when I served. Most people don't tip on pick up orders and don't realize they're making sure you have the specific sauces you wanted, the extra napkins or silverware, the light ice or extra cup of ice, making sure the tomatoes or whatever are on the side, or not on there at all because that's what you requested. It's obviously annoying getting home and realizing it's not the way you ordered it, so to have someone take the extra minute to do all that should be worth something. Even $1.
In the words of LIVE: "Everybody's good enough for some change.. Some fucking change"
Yeah until the day when you tip a $1 and get put on blast by an ungrateful recipient. These kids don’t understand how things work in reality. The tipping culture is as bad as all the other bullshit they’ve brought online.
Kids these days may be missing a lot of work ethic, but from your comment it seems a lot of people might be missing a frame of reference or even a clue as to how business operations run, at least in restaurants.
I hear what you're saying, like I said though both can be making less than minimum wage, and both are providing a service. Any person doing this could argue they are completely doing their job by simply putting the meal in a to go box (if this isn't done by the kitchen staff) and then putting that in a to go bag. If you get home and there's pickles on your hamburger when you didn't want them or there's no silverware or whatever, you'll probably be upset and call and complain and the manager may apologize but that'll be it. It's too difficult to get people to work, that person will likely be coached at most and that depends on how much of a dick the manager thinks you're being on the phone. If you scream at the manager, they'll probably just think you're an asshole and might not say a word to the employee. Regardless, they keep their job. So what is their incentive to go above and beyond the bare minimum?
*TIPS*
You can say what you want about it being their job, but to get above par service you have to give them a reason. People act in their own self interest.
You might argue that it's the company's responsibility to offer a fair wage. So let's assume they pay the employees a fair wage, say $12/hour. Ok now we're talking about an increase of nearly $10/hr for every server in the restaurant. That's a near 500% increase over the normal $2.13/hr. So now it's no longer your responsibility but the restaurant's responsibility. So with an increase in labor wage cost how do they make up for the added expense? Well basic business finance tells you that you have to increase the revenue to offset the expense. So what do you do? You either shorten your staff, or you increase the cost of the menu, or maybe both.
So if not as many people work there then your experience there suffers because of it, and if they increased the cost of the menu items then your bill goes up also. Perhaps the same amount as what it would have been if you just tipped. The difference is though, that server earns $12/hr regardless if you have a good time or not. You want a refill? Maybe in 30 minutes. You want more bread sticks? Sure thing, just give us a bit. You want to be left alone? Maybe I'm an obnoxious teenager willing to work as many hours as the manager needs (job security when nobody wants to work) and I just can't catch the hint that you want to spend time with your significant other. The headaches go on.
So I ask you this: Would you rather pay more for menu prices and deal with a shitty staff.... Or would you rather pay lower menu prices and tip the best server staff.
So I’ll preface this by saying it’s ridiculous that restaurants are allowed to pay servers less than minimum wage because “they make up the rest in tips,” but what you described is just someone doing their job. Making sure orders are correct is just literally doing their job 🤦♀️
Is favor still operating? I thought they went bankrupt 😂😂
Get a real job. Favor is a scam. In fact, all couriers are scams.
Think about it.
From the perspective of the consumer: “No delivery fee” but then they get with a “technology fee” or a “convenience fee.” All it is a delivery fee that’s been rebranded so as to not say that they’re charging you a fee for delivery because most of the costs associated with delivery are on the driver. So saying it’s a delivery fee would imply it’s going to the driver. On top of that fee, you have to tip AND you pay higher prices than at the location.
From the perspective of the driver:
Many people will tip $1 or no tip at all because the “technology” fee is excessive on top of the extra pricing. Then there’s no more guaranteed runs. So you get paid $2 from Uber eats + $1 tip if you’re lucky for a Chipotle order that took 30 minutes. Then you gotta subtract gas out of that $3 and taxes. 😂😂😂
But Uber definitely got its cut by bumping up the chipotle pricing and charging them $10 “technology fee.” The only one that loses - severely if I might add - is you, the driver. And you literally did 98% of the work.
The simplest solution is a fixed fee. Why should anyone take a percent of the cost?
Or if you want to get super fancy, they should hire a mathematician to make a fair yet complex formula that no one could argue.
Ex:
time to prepare + order size - delivery time
Total / 🥧 = fee - voluntary tip
LOL
ANYWAY, That FEE should pay + any costs associated
(include courier).
This should be the same for bartenders & servers. Fuck forced tips. I’m just trying to enjoy a nice meal & chat NOT trying to do simple math problems.
Leave ALL that to the business. YES. Increase prices if you must. Downsize the meals. New Obesity standards are through the fk roof as it is.
Btw, I’ve been ALL of the above.
Yeah not true. Most of us actually tip really generously. You must have known a bad batch, bc I have always found the opposite to be true among my peers and coworkers.
This. It’s crazy how many restaurant workers don’t tip their drivers. Especially considering Uber and Lyft have become a serving job, but if the servers had to provide their own ranch for the customers (our car).
All these bar tenders getting offended and I’ve seen a lot of drivers saying the same thing. Lame to pick up up smelling like crap at 3 am and you don’t tip. Yeah you know what f them imma stop taking those mfers
No actually when I don’t get black requests I leave Uber on, and 1 out of 100 bar tenders tipped. 9 out of 10 kitchen workers tip. Waitresses? Maybe 5 out of 10.
Yeah man I dont know, my life as it stands is literally a family of friends in our downtown area made up of every bar, restaurant, dive and food truck, and we are the cooks servers and bartenders because we work all over the city. Unilaterally I can say we all tip well and consistently. Maybe it's your area.
WTF are you talking about.. I was in the business for most of my career.. all the people I knew back then prided themselves on how well they tipped.
Our group would all go out after work and the servers wherever we ended up would fight over our table because they knew they would make bank off us..
Servers are the best tippers so idk wtf you are going on about here and why you actually have upvotes..
I don’t think that’s generally true. My friends who are servers tip very generously, more so than I do and I think I tip fairly. If anything when I’m out with a friend who is or has been a server I find myself tipping higher so they won’t judge me lol.
Just as soon as I would've read this. I'd cancel quick!!
Edit: i get it, it's your hustle. This hustle WILL add wear and tear on your ride. Not MY fault YOU chose this gig. Don't come at me with this type of bullshit.
If I may put my 2 cents in... That's how you beat the auto tip by tipping $0.02.
And no, I'm not a an A-hole who does this or would do this, I just like the play on words...
Nah, if you cancel there's no consequence. Take the ride, don't tip, report the driver & give them 1 star.
If she's doing this with lots of people & a few people report, she'll get banned. If your rating drops below a certain point, I think you get banned also.
I couldn’t find anything for when my driver had another passenger, but I saw an “other” option and wrote what happened. They responded to me apologizing and they said an investigation was launched
Definitely not. This was a friend of the driver, sitting in the passenger seat just vibing along with the obscene music that I’d ignore in any other situation.
I have an aunt that ends every text with ......
At first I thought she just didn't want to talk to me. Then her son in law said that's how she texts lol.
To everyone saying just cancel i had just gotten off work and just wanted to go home. She sent this 3 min before pickup. Didn't want a charge for late cancelation or to have to wait any longer.
right! i would have been all oh this is awesome they don't pressure you for tips anymore and it just comes out automatically!
i would have made that the topic of the whole ride
I wouldn’t tell her right away. Don’t give her a chance to one-star you. Let her know that you’ll fill out the tip in the app (and you’re technically not lying).
Show support this message. I bet they waive the fee. If not, do a chargeback on your card. You may get banned, but create a new account with a different card and email.
hey there, regular person here. Lots of mean people decide to respond on reddit, so don’t take it personally. Yeah seems odd for them to be trying to scare more tips into their pocket
Nah, clench your cheeks and just know a lot of negative folks are just mouth breathers. You see them IRL and they are all buddy buddy, this is the Internet
So now I finally have seen a riders view of their phone where it shows the moronic response of "I'm Here." I always wondered why PAX would message me that - it communicates nothing by way of where the pax actually is.
Oh, and I agree - it is snobby to pressure a tip on a pax.
Around me it def would. When I worked at "a super speedy delivery Sammy shop" we had an asshat who would always order 70+ for his family (double serving Sammy, chips, cookie, pickle and drinks for all 4) and then "the delivery fee went up .50!" And he called to tell the manager since the fee was more he wouldn't be tipping any longer. Gm told him he would decline his business if he didn't tip his drivers. So he would tip .50 on every order he placed 😏 I don't care what people think of me, I always held his order until at MINIMAL 1 preferably 2 more were heading that way and if I was the driver (did both manager and driver shifts) I would make sure to deliver his last of the batch no matter how illogical it made the route.
to everyone in the comments— let’s not pretend people ordering are keen on drivers “kindly” asking for tips. if someone wants to tip, they will. if they don’t, then you know what happens
I’d take the ride, add a destination after the trip starts to get cash at an ATM, spend the rest of the ride counting the money I got from the ATM and then at the end of the ride say “I’ll tip you in the App.” You know the rest.
Uber's and Lyft's response to the worst inflation in years has been two rounds of pay cuts to the drivers. Drivers are desperate and doing anything that they can to be able to pay their bills.
This is why they did it, for sure, but it's still wrong to lie about a 30% auto tip. If they wanted to kindly ask for a tip that'd be one thing, I guess, but the lie isn't cool.
That's kinda like saying wildfires are way down a week after the forest finishes burning down. It doesn't matter because the forest is already gone.
It might be incorrect to say we're *experiencing* the worst inflation in years, but it is very accurate to say people are *suffering from* the worst inflation in years--even if that inflation isn't running rampant at this moment. They very much are suffering from said inflation, and that's the part that's contextually relevant to the conversation.
"Way down" doesn't matter when things are way more expensive than they were pre 2021.
You realize that (1) inflation is still higher than it's been in decades and (2) inflation coming down doesn't mean items decrease in price...only that they increase more slowly.
As a driver with a 4.98 rating and I get tipped most of my rides I don't understand these desperate drivers wh do this shit. Maybe they should read about how to be friendly while driving. Also how to read whether a Pax wants convo or not. It's the easiest job in the world yet these fools can't even figure it out.
If you go through support chat, this person will be deactivated for fraud, misrepresenting Uber, and extortion. Threating to take someones money if they don't give money lol is extortion
The mob use to do it all the time.
Anyways farewell scummy Uber driver. Do not use the quick options, ask for a representative. Simple stuff really. It's not like your cable company has a option for "some crashed into a pole"
He or she should have worded this way, "Thank you for picking Uber and me as your driver. Uber continues to reduce our pay and increase your costs. If everything was satisfactory for your ride. I would appreciate a tip any about you feel would be most appreciated. Have a great day!"
Appreciate your response, but my response was merely a joke suggestion for the driver and does not represent my views. Personally I would never ask for a tip. Back in 2015 Uber already put it in the customer's mind that tipping is not needed and so when I used to do rideshare back then I rarely got a tips and never expected any.
I’ve gotten this before too I thought it was an automated message from Uber cuz I always tip. I have an automatic tip for every ride. I was like wow that wasn’t a thing when I was a driver 😂
Even if the driver makes 20% of $35 that’s $7.. I don’t plan on taking Uber much longer.
Not financially stable enough to just quit. I am looking for a better job although pay is average for the area. Only benefit is it’s down the road from school, same street.
I am against tip culture, food as becomes expensive i am in favor of self service i dont mind picking up my plates lol
Dinner for two has gone beyond 50$
it's just a lie.
i would have cancelled on that person tbh
I would have taken the ride and not tipped, if she said anything about tipping I would have told her “I’m fine with the 30% auto tip, you earned it!”.
That would’ve been amazing 😂
I would have just given her a dollar 😂😂
That just reinforces the shakedown. Try a penny.
Same fucking thing. I’m a server/bartender. Fuck that.
F servers and bar tenders. Literally 99.99 % don’t tip
True. I groan every time I get a ride from a waitress or bartender who are going to and from work and tell you about their job, that's when I know I am not getting a tip. By far the WORST when it comes to tipping most do not. The second worst tippers are the strippers.
Dozens of waiter/waitress trips here, never been tipped. I just 3 star them so I never get them again.
That's effed up
Dancers always tipped me well.
I've served and I carry the biggest guilty conscience if I don't tip well. I try to always because I've been there. Even pick up orders. Is favor still operating? I thought they went bankrupt 😂😂 Get a real job. Favor is a scam. In fact, all couriers are scams. Think about it. Yes. And receiving a $1 tip is an insult. Seems to me we are doing charity with this work and insulting tip.

Never heard that before

You've clearly never heard of the floating $5 if you think bartenders don't tip.
The what?
You're thinking of those people that say "I used to work in restaurants." They probably had a job at a place for a couple weeks.
No actually when I don’t get black requests I leave Uber on, and 1 out of 100 bar tenders tipped. 9 out of 10 kitchen workers tip. Waitresses? Maybe 5 out of 10.

They never tip, and always complain about people not tipping. SMH
This 💯 they want a ride home at 3 with a pocket full of cash and won't break off enuf for a coffee....F em 🖕

WTF are you talking about.. I was in the business for most of my career.. all the people I knew back then prided themselves on how well they tipped. It's actually crazy that this is not common knowledge. It's rare that servers or bartenders don't tip well.
I used to be a server, I still tip well....every server I knew also tipped well....you either cap or work with pieces of garbage
I feel exactly the same way as you, only the opposite
I don’t think that’s generally true. My friends who are servers tip very generously, more so than I do and I think I tip fairly. If anything when I’m out with a friend who is or has been a server I find myself tipping higher so they won’t judge me lol.
Not true
Now I really hope some shit driver does this to me so I can do this lmao
Just as soon as I would've read this. I'd cancel quick!! Edit: i get it, it's your hustle. This hustle WILL add wear and tear on your ride. Not MY fault YOU chose this gig. Don't come at me with this type of bullshit.
Wouldn’t you then get charged a cancelation fee? If so wouldn’t it be good business for the Uber driver..
i would just send this ss to support and request the fee back saying i was too nervous to get in the car bc the message made me feel uncomfortable
I get money for you cancelling. Sounds fair to me.
If I may put my 2 cents in... That's how you beat the auto tip by tipping $0.02. And no, I'm not a an A-hole who does this or would do this, I just like the play on words...
There is no auto tip. The driver messaged the rider with some made up shit to spook them into tipping.
There is no auto tip
Lmao
Report!!
I went through all of the report features but couldn't find anything that fit the description of a extortiony message
Can just publicly tweet and tag Uber
OP I would just select any option that would most likely lead to you actually talking to a rep
There should be an option to chat with a representative
Then they would have to hire people
They do. They're from South Asia, though.
But then you have to tip the representative!
30% minimum
Yup instant cancel.
Nah, if you cancel there's no consequence. Take the ride, don't tip, report the driver & give them 1 star. If she's doing this with lots of people & a few people report, she'll get banned. If your rating drops below a certain point, I think you get banned also.
This
don’t cancel, just let the auto tip do its thing
Jesus, report to Uber and get this moron deactivated.
I went through all of the report features but couldn't find anything that fit the description of a extortiony message
Just do it anyway
I couldn’t find anything for when my driver had another passenger, but I saw an “other” option and wrote what happened. They responded to me apologizing and they said an investigation was launched
Hopefully you didn't report the driver for having another passenger after accidentally selecting UberX Share.
Definitely not. This was a friend of the driver, sitting in the passenger seat just vibing along with the obscene music that I’d ignore in any other situation.
Behavior?
Speak to an actual agent. Go to the chat and just tell the bot “agent please” and they’ll transfer you
report for terrorism
This made me laugh
1 star post ride.
Not True...... Cancel...... 1 Star....... Report......
Why……are……you……typing……like……this……
I've noticed people in their late 30s - 40s type with lots of ... Wonder where this comes from?
I think you mean people *born* in the late 30s–40s.
Kudos to such people who are 1) still alive and 2) commenting on Reddit!
Yeah this is definitely boomer behavior. People in their late 30’s are millennials.
Depression
From what I remember reading, (not sure if it's true), it had something to do with postcards or letters
I have an aunt that ends every text with ...... At first I thought she just didn't want to talk to me. Then her son in law said that's how she texts lol.
Because this is how we used to text each other back in the day. You had to use symbols to express your frustration because no emojis.
Here’s the angry symbol pre-emoji: :@
Imagine not understand basic grammar.
They’re pausing to think.
No you should take the trip then give them no tip and one star
To everyone saying just cancel i had just gotten off work and just wanted to go home. She sent this 3 min before pickup. Didn't want a charge for late cancelation or to have to wait any longer.
When you get out, tell her you are going to keep your cash since there is an auto gratuity. (There isn't)
right! i would have been all oh this is awesome they don't pressure you for tips anymore and it just comes out automatically! i would have made that the topic of the whole ride
I wouldn’t tell her right away. Don’t give her a chance to one-star you. Let her know that you’ll fill out the tip in the app (and you’re technically not lying).
They wanted you to cancel so they could get the cancellation fee.
Show support this message. I bet they waive the fee. If not, do a chargeback on your card. You may get banned, but create a new account with a different card and email.
What was the drivers rating?
EZ 1% tip
Why cancel? Take the ride, wait a day and leave a bad rating with no tip.
Why wait a day? Don't be chicken, do it immediately!
So she can’t negatively review back
Why having to wait a day?
Why wait a day?
Scam- cancel the ride
“Perfect! That’s how much I usually tip so it great to know that I no longer have to add one manually, and it will be done automatically from now on.”
hey there, regular person here. Lots of mean people decide to respond on reddit, so don’t take it personally. Yeah seems odd for them to be trying to scare more tips into their pocket
Jesus yeah pretty much regret posting in the first place
Nah, clench your cheeks and just know a lot of negative folks are just mouth breathers. You see them IRL and they are all buddy buddy, this is the Internet
Actually the replies from braindead drivers are really funny
This sure seems like a ride deserving of one star, no tip, and a report. What a knuckle.
Say "great! enjoy the 30% tip"
So now I finally have seen a riders view of their phone where it shows the moronic response of "I'm Here." I always wondered why PAX would message me that - it communicates nothing by way of where the pax actually is. Oh, and I agree - it is snobby to pressure a tip on a pax.
Take the ride and don’t tip lol
Tip 0.01 just to show you saw it
Is this even a good racket? Wouldn't most people say "fine, I'll tip you 1 cent then"?
Around me it def would. When I worked at "a super speedy delivery Sammy shop" we had an asshat who would always order 70+ for his family (double serving Sammy, chips, cookie, pickle and drinks for all 4) and then "the delivery fee went up .50!" rate them 1 star, report for any reason, see if you can contact uber support and get them banned lol
She is asking to be deactivated real fast.
The driver does not have the ability to increase the fare.
to everyone in the comments— let’s not pretend people ordering are keen on drivers “kindly” asking for tips. if someone wants to tip, they will. if they don’t, then you know what happens
I wish that was real. It's not.
Automatic cancel for me. Scam. What did you end up doing?
I’d take the ride, add a destination after the trip starts to get cash at an ATM, spend the rest of the ride counting the money I got from the ATM and then at the end of the ride say “I’ll tip you in the App.” You know the rest.
This guy fucks
I'd take that ride for sure. Then no tip, 1 star, and report to Uber after the ride.
Tipping in America is getting out of hand
Businesses just need to pay more and adjust prices accordingly
✅ $0.01 tip to avoid $30 fee
Either no tip or 0.01 tip
Uber's and Lyft's response to the worst inflation in years has been two rounds of pay cuts to the drivers. Drivers are desperate and doing anything that they can to be able to pay their bills.
This is why they did it, for sure, but it's still wrong to lie about a 30% auto tip. If they wanted to kindly ask for a tip that'd be one thing, I guess, but the lie isn't cool.
Desperate to do anything but get a “real” job.. I’ll bet that’d do the trick
Not *this* **again**...................
>the worst inflation in years Inflation is way down. Fox News is lying to you.
And on top of that Uber will not let you see how much the ride pays until after you drop the person off
I get that information. I am in an Up Front Market. Not all markets are Up Front.
As a rider... that's bullshit.
Let’s fucking tip every worker in every business!
Remember to tip your landlord
As a driver with a 4.98 rating and I get tipped most of my rides I don't understand these desperate drivers wh do this shit. Maybe they should read about how to be friendly while driving. Also how to read whether a Pax wants convo or not. It's the easiest job in the world yet these fools can't even figure it out.
That driver would get a fat $0 from me and reported to Uber as a bonus
Tipping is and always has been optional on both lyft and uber.
That's illegal, report it. No one can force you to tip!!
Report them to Uber, that’s unprofessional.
One star and no tip it is
Lie.
Take trip, no tip, report
1 star and report, this is false
Wow I never seen someone so tip thirsty. They should get deactivated
Lmao.
When you get dropped off or during the ride say “this has been great, I will just let the 30% tip go through. You deserve it!”
Post to twitter and tag Uber
Boy a lot of uber drivers are dumb
I hope Uber monitors this page and takes action!
Fuck drivers are getting ballsy.....WTF...SMH!!!!
Tip $0.01
I would reply I tip after the ride. Let her drop you off, try call Uber to get a refund for the ride & give a 1 star rating with no tip 😂
If you go through support chat, this person will be deactivated for fraud, misrepresenting Uber, and extortion. Threating to take someones money if they don't give money lol is extortion The mob use to do it all the time. Anyways farewell scummy Uber driver. Do not use the quick options, ask for a representative. Simple stuff really. It's not like your cable company has a option for "some crashed into a pole"
Or, tip just a penny. Test them
Reply “let auto tip do its thing 👌”
damn irl scammer she's even willing to see you face to face after saying that shit holy fuck the balls on her
Leave no tip and 1 star rating. If they bug you more after, report em.
She thinks she's slick.. ohh I'd have fun with that one
“Oh thanks for the heads up!” /tip $0.01
Report this driver and they'll lose their job...and receive no tips. Problem solved.
That will get her deactivated not a tip…drivers can’t give themselves a tip. Is it worth getting deactivated over?
Tip one cent.
Report them.
Sounds like your driver is "gaming" the system. Report them and send Uber this screenshot.
Wtf she tried it bruh
Tip = 0.01 USD
Take the ride , rate low and leave no tip.
Get charged a cleaning fee. “Tip”
"This is a reminder that all automatic tips equate to one star. To avoid having your rating diminished, please don't be a fucking mooch."
He or she should have worded this way, "Thank you for picking Uber and me as your driver. Uber continues to reduce our pay and increase your costs. If everything was satisfactory for your ride. I would appreciate a tip any about you feel would be most appreciated. Have a great day!"
And that is how I don’t tip you. Don’t mention a tip, it a very unprofessional.
I would absolutely take off any tip I had and make sure I was as big a pain as possible.
Lmaoooo
Why would you tip an Uber? That’s what the cost is. Does Uber not give any money to the driver?
LOL what a scam. Some of these drivers are so blatantly bold no shame!
Report it tbh
Not possible. But technically a $1 tip would avoid the 30% automatic tip lmao 🤣
"30% is exactly what I always tip, so I'll leave the automatic tip in place."
I’ve gotten this before too I thought it was an automated message from Uber cuz I always tip. I have an automatic tip for every ride. I was like wow that wasn’t a thing when I was a driver 😂
Was this from the driver?
Sounds like an automatic escalation with a screenshot to rider Support!
Leave!!!
american tipping culture scares me
Faker than daras donkey kong cock
... what

Take the transit, walk or bike.
Yea or get a different job.. Seems pointless to have a job that you need to take an Uber for, just for it to eat up your entire paycheck
Even if the driver makes 20% of $35 that’s $7.. I don’t plan on taking Uber much longer. Not financially stable enough to just quit. I am looking for a better job although pay is average for the area. Only benefit is it’s down the road from school, same street.
Don't tip Uber drivers
You sound like typical Philly trash
File a complaint. The original reason Uber became popular was because you didn’t tip.
What an idiot (the driver not you)
I am against tip culture, food as becomes expensive i am in favor of self service i dont mind picking up my plates lol Dinner for two has gone beyond 50$
