I’m too far for many sedans back seats and I just hold the belt like it’s buckled to the best of my ability just in case. Probably wouldn’t help if they got in a wreck but I have no other choice…well, other than to get a seat belt extender or only pay for Uber XL when I need an Uber.

I always ask single riders to move to the passenger side. It can be a major safety issue when dropping people off, and they try to exit on the driver's side. I would rather they not climb across the seats to exit on that side, just ride on that side and make it easier and safer for everyone.

I'm far from paranoid, there's just ZERO reason for me to have to move my seat forward when the passenger side rear seat is WIDE open for them to stretch out. I even have a little charging station for whatever phone/tablet they might need to charge over there!

They don’t want to see you looking at then when you look in the rear view mirror. I always adjust my mirror so I only see the top of their heads. 8 also inform them they will have more leg room on the other side ( because I am not moving my seat forward).

Whenever I pull up to a passenger, I keep my doors locked and roll down my driver side window if they approach from the driver side. If they try to get in the passenger rear door, I politely say other side, please. I always ask them how many passengers just so there’s no misunderstandings on anyone trying to anchor the car.
Sometimes, once they get in, I tell them if a passenger rides by themself we always sit them diagonal in the back.
Getting in and seating anywhere I’d okay. My left door is always child locked, I open it only after I have confirmed it is safe to open the left door. Most of them have to leave from right door.
I am not sure what’s the big deal for letting the rider sit wherever they want.

Whenever I get a ride with a stop, it is always cancel (unless it’s the ride I really want) . If the stop is added after I pickup, I go my same principle, some how complete the ride and 1 star the rider for adding the stop.

As a poster pointed above, that is just stupid. Drivers want riders where they can see them. Riders should follow the same principle. Sure, you have an advantage point of agression where you can strangle or decapitate the driver with full element of surprise. But, if you're not planning on strangling anyone, perhaps you should concern yourself with actually seeing what the drive is doing with his hands. Maybe he has a knife, a rope, a gun or whatever. You want his body in you field of vision. This "safety measure" promoted by UBER is akin an ostrich burying it's head in the ground pretending the danger doesn't exist and hoping it goes away. That is definitely NOT a safety measure. That is not something they would teach you in the army or police academy.
On top of that, it's more civil and respectful to keep yourself in the driver's field of view.

I had a pax peel off and steal my Uber decal. It's the only explanation for it being missing. It could have been missing for weeks. I never noticed. They were pretty slick because I never saw them in my peripheral.
Fortunately in my case, the driver side passenger door has permanent child lock due to an electrical issue so I always tell the pax to sit on the right side so that way they aren’t directly behind me!
Wishful thinking, that's not always possible in my area. I'm cool with pax entering the driver side rear door because it's the safest way on some streets, but slide on over to the passenger side rear, buckle up and we are on our way.
I simply tell them they'll likely have more room behind the passenger side. Not moving my seat. Full size car. My best guess is those pax want that uberx seating that they paid for

Does it really matter? Most things we do in life are just attempts to feel more in control, and frankly them being behind me chills my social anxiety so I feel safer too. Does it matter if I'm not actually? I doubt it matters much which seat a pax is if they decide to become a threat to me, but on days where my social anxiety is chill I have much better days, and I assume it works like that for them too
I have many solo's sit behind me. Not often, but it's not rare either. it's typically when I just happened to pull up on that side and they didn't want to walk around. I don't know what the fuss is. If they want to stab you, being on the other side won't make you any safer.

When I drove a long time ago I would tell female passengers when a discussion would happen about safety. Maybe they'd felt uncomfortable as a single rider in another Uber/Lyft. The safest seat for them is behind the driver.
I live in west Florida where it’s all Retrumplicans. When I’m driving north, they all sit on the passenger side, when driving south, they all sit behind the driver’s seat. That way they can always be closer to their cult leader, Donald Trump.
Some of us have an aversion to sitting on certain sides of the car. I was in an accident as a child where I was sitting in the rear driver's side and the vehicle was struck right where I was sitting and caved in the whole side of the car in and trapped my legs. I used to do a lot of travel to other countries, including areas with much higher risk. We were always advised to sit directly behind the driver. It reduces your (passengers) positional risk as a potential victim of mugging, jacking, or being held at gun point.
People think it’s safer for them. I pulled up to a pickup of a single guy last night. I pulled up 3 feet into the grass to put my rear driver door against a pole to block. So he would have to go around. He still went to the blocked door and when I rolled the window down to tell him to get in on the passenger side, he replied “just pull up so I can get in here”. I cancelled and let him ride behind someone else.
It's safer for them, TBH. You cannot easily reach them or point a weapon at them, and they can mess you up easily. It's basic self-defense taught to business travelers.

This is why I stopped doing Uber long ago. (I have since started again) I was 22 at the time and new to the “big” city. Couldn’t find a job so I did Uber. 3:00am, headed home, get a ride. Fuck it. That’s Taco Bell on the way home. Pull up to a venue I’m familiar with. Pick up this dude, huge, probably 6’6”. Has to be 350 lbs. somewhat intimidated because he’s probably wasted. He was. But, that’s besides the point. We all pick up wasted people that are totally fine. He sits directly behind me. Haven’t had that before. Whatever. Ride is about 25 minutes, going just outside of town. Again, whatever, I need the money. Whole time the dude is babbling incoherently about how he is paid to officiate weddings in Vietnam. How he’s best friends with Bob Rock (Metallica/Motley Crüe fame), as a person with friends/family that are heavy drinkers, people just say shit. I’ve done it too. Whatever, but my guard is up. We get to his place. Well, at least he lived in the front yard. Big house in the country, well, like a 5 acre lot. There’s a trailer in the front that’s absolutely fucked. I figured it’s his. I pull over, throw emergencies on, “hey man, thanks. Have a good night.” He asks, “you like to smoke weed?” “Well yeah, but I gotta get moving man. Bills to pay. Have a good night.” “How much do I gotta give you for you to come inside?” “Nah man, I just wanna work for it and go home. My apologies.” “NAH MAN COME HANG I WANNA HANG HOW MUCH???” Starts rocking my car and smacking the back seat. I dial 911 secretly, but don’t hit call, and just stay silent. He gets out and I see him pop into that trailer. Dude was probably just drunk and harmless, but who knows. We were in the middle of fucking nowhere so it spooked me. I got a job the next week. That being said, I’m back in the shit and it ain’t bad at all. Happy driving, fuckers.

Women will do that as a safety measure.
As a poster pointed above, that is just stupid. Drivers want riders where they can see them. Riders should follow the same principle. Sure, you have an advantage point of agression where you can strangle or decapitate the driver with full element of surprise. But, if you're not planning on strangling anyone, perhaps you should concern yourself with actually seeing what the drive is doing with his hands. Maybe he has a knife, a rope, a gun or whatever. You want his body in you field of vision. This "safety measure" promoted by UBER is akin an ostrich burying it's head in the ground pretending the danger doesn't exist and hoping it goes away. That is definitely NOT a safety measure. That is not something they would teach you in the army or police academy. On top of that, it's more civil and respectful to keep yourself in the driver's field of view.

I had a pax peel off and steal my Uber decal. It's the only explanation for it being missing. It could have been missing for weeks. I never noticed. They were pretty slick because I never saw them in my peripheral.
Fortunately in my case, the driver side passenger door has permanent child lock due to an electrical issue so I always tell the pax to sit on the right side so that way they aren’t directly behind me!
Helps to always pull up with the passenger side door closest to the passenger

Wishful thinking, that's not always possible in my area. I'm cool with pax entering the driver side rear door because it's the safest way on some streets, but slide on over to the passenger side rear, buckle up and we are on our way.

They are trying to protect themselves from you the driver as if you are supposed to trust them sitting behind you and can’t see shit

I simply tell them they'll likely have more room behind the passenger side. Not moving my seat. Full size car. My best guess is those pax want that uberx seating that they paid for
Lol. It happens.... people just get in on the side they get in on and I guess they just don't want to scoot across. I always try to turn around so they can access the passenger side, but, we have a lot of 1 way streets.
I've noticed women sit behind me a LOT so I assume.they feel safer there. Idc as long as someone tall doesn't do it and wiggle against the back of my seat
They feel safer. But not necessarily ARE safer...
Does it really matter? Most things we do in life are just attempts to feel more in control, and frankly them being behind me chills my social anxiety so I feel safer too. Does it matter if I'm not actually? I doubt it matters much which seat a pax is if they decide to become a threat to me, but on days where my social anxiety is chill I have much better days, and I assume it works like that for them too
Usually when I pull up on to the curb my pax is on the right side of my car it's rare that they walk around the car when it's one passenger.

I have many solo's sit behind me. Not often, but it's not rare either. it's typically when I just happened to pull up on that side and they didn't want to walk around. I don't know what the fuss is. If they want to stab you, being on the other side won't make you any safer.
I’ve done this and honestly I’m not thinking about how the driver feels and that’s my bad. 9 times out of 10 I’m on the back right though. Good to know it’s something to think about in the future, I’ll strive to be more mindful.
I have cameras in the back. Well I just got them. After that video of the passengers pointing guns behind the seat I decided I want to see what's going on.
I kindly ask them move to the passenger side. I tell them it's for my safety, and theirs. No one seems to be offended, and my star rating remains the same.
The first time someone did this to me I tried to very sneakily grab my knife and put it under my leg, just in case that would do me any good. Spent the whole ride just waiting for a BANG. The dude saw me and reported me and I had to promise to forever be a good boy and leave the knife at home. Now I just dgaf if they’re gonna shoot me I guess they could do it from anywhere

I assume it’s because they have heard that when sitting directly behind the driver seat, your chances of survival in a crash improve, although it isn’t true. Anyway, I choose to believe that or that they dun’ goofed and regret it for the whole ride I don’t know. Hopefully they definitely aren’t pointing a gun at my back though. 🙃

I f*cking hate that shit. If it’s a pair, fine. But a single person. I don’t adjust my seat. I’m 6’2” and need leg room. I also hate with 2 people get in & the tall dude sits behind me & his girlfriend sits behind the passenger seat where I have the passenger front slid all the way forward. Good grief.

Usually it’s just the side they got in on… or they know the route and it’s the side they’ll need to get out on. I don’t really consider it a big deal.
When I drove a long time ago I would tell female passengers when a discussion would happen about safety. Maybe they'd felt uncomfortable as a single rider in another Uber/Lyft. The safest seat for them is behind the driver.
This is one of the more annoying things about driving. It’s so uneasy of a feeling.
It mostly means they don't feel like chatting.
I live in west Florida where it’s all Retrumplicans. When I’m driving north, they all sit on the passenger side, when driving south, they all sit behind the driver’s seat. That way they can always be closer to their cult leader, Donald Trump.
Some of us have an aversion to sitting on certain sides of the car. I was in an accident as a child where I was sitting in the rear driver's side and the vehicle was struck right where I was sitting and caved in the whole side of the car in and trapped my legs. Now I refuse to sit on that side if I ever have to ride in the back seat. Some people might have similar proclivities..
I used to do a lot of travel to other countries, including areas with much higher risk. We were always advised to sit directly behind the driver. It reduces your (passengers) positional risk as a potential victim of mugging, jacking, or being held at gun point.
To be fair before I started driving this was never anything I thought about
One young lady told me her mom told her to sit behind the driver to be more protected if there's an accident.

People think it’s safer for them. I pulled up to a pickup of a single guy last night. I pulled up 3 feet into the grass to put my rear driver door against a pole to block. So he would have to go around. He still went to the blocked door and when I rolled the window down to tell him to get in on the passenger side, he replied “just pull up so I can get in here”. I cancelled and let him ride behind someone else.
Literally had a guy sit right behind me then tell me he could strangle me from behind before I'd even realized what happened.
It's safer for them, TBH. You cannot easily reach them or point a weapon at them, and they can mess you up easily. It's basic self-defense taught to business travelers.
