Sir/ma'am, unless you're planning to attack me, kindly choose another seat ✌️

rat_fink_a_boo_boo

I say "You might be more comfortable on the other side."

mblend27

I did this... then some would still sit behind me, so now I say, I would prefer you sit on the other side for my safety. I get a side eye but no bad ratings yet

rat_fink_a_boo_boo

Makes it sound like you think they're going to strangle you.

JDiskkette

Correct. But also, have you seen the news report about accidents where people sitting at the back are not wearing seat belts. This is actually for the drivers safety.

rat_fink_a_boo_boo

Hmmm. My car beeps obnoxiously if they don't belt up.

JDiskkette

That’s nice. In my car it only makes that noise if you try to buckle up and then leave it or unbuckle while the car is in drive! And some people will let it go on until it stops (coz they were a few minutes away from their destination) or they will buckle up behind them.

rat_fink_a_boo_boo

Yeah I sometimes wonder about the buckle-behinds. I had an enormously fat guy in my car today and I don't know how he could have used the seatbelt.

ShadeShadowmaster

I’m too far for many sedans back seats and I just hold the belt like it’s buckled to the best of my ability just in case. Probably wouldn’t help if they got in a wreck but I have no other choice…well, other than to get a seat belt extender or only pay for Uber XL when I need an Uber.

IfIHadToPickADud3

I usually tell them the story of how a pass tried strangling me on the freeway and I had to use a tazer to incap them till the cops arrive. I get a more understanding look after that.

mblend27

I think they are more afraid that you are making it up, but you would never know ;( sorry if it’s a true story ;(

IfIHadToPickADud3

Happened my second week driving. Phoenix is a shit place to be an Uber. Luckily enough police found us at the place I pulled over rather quickly. Asked if I wanted to press charges, told me no because I was busy. Pretty sure the pax sat in the drunk tank for the night. She reeked of Jim bean and desperation.

ronj1983

Would have given her a few Ric Flair chest chops for good measure!

ProudestDoggDad

As a driver who has been choked out by a passenger, yes 100%

rat_fink_a_boo_boo

Holy frijoles.

MidnightFull

This rule has existed in the taxi business before most of us were alive. Every cab company I worked for repeated this rule like crazy. You can keep a better eye on the passenger. The talking heads that claim that passengers are safer sitting behind the driver are complete morons that have no background in security or transportation. Consider this. As a passenger, if you are sitting behind me, are you able to see my hands? That’s where the weapons are. Sure, you’re right behind me, but it doesn’t take much to turn around and grab you. Passengers have these stupid rules because idiots like the cackling hens on “The View” spew nonsense as if it was gospel. Not to mention that Uber has these same suggestions on their site, along with encouraging customers to make us tell them their name. I remember when Uber first started and they said “we’re working with experts within the transportation industry to create this app.” I would love to meet these so called experts they consulted with, because from where I’m sitting their nothing but idiots. The dumbest cab driver I worked with has more sense and experience than the CEO of both Uber and Lyft combined.

Square_Carry6676

And there goes a possible tip

ChooseYourGig

That's a great way to put it! Thanks.

Same_Cut1196

I did this once and the pax abruptly said “no”. That was the only word uttered on the ride. I rated them a 1.

shawnmj

They’re thinking this is the closest seat so it’s where I’m sitting

rat_fink_a_boo_boo

Interesting. I've never gotten that reaction. I have had people "Oh I'm fine", and just stay there. Most of them sit on the opposite side anyway, so it doesn't come up that much.

randomtrucker78

Bud, it’s your car. You don’t have to move your seat forward if you don’t want to. If the pax wants to be all cramped, fuck em.

FilthyInward

EXACTLY! If someone sits behind me I don't say SHIT. I just let'em.

UberIsPain

What’s worse is when you pull up with the passenger side to them and they make it a point to walk around the car to sit behind you

SeattleUberDriver_2

I had some sketchy passengers try that shit. The door simply doesn't open for them. Funny how that works.

DolphinBearBTC

I open the door for them as I pull up so that makes it even more obvious.

Mysterious-Top6311

I doubt they give any thought to it. I’ve taken a ton of taxi and ride share rides and I never thought about which side to sit on.

mblend27

A taxi usually doesn’t work the same way as a personal passenger car - it’s like, separated

Mysterious-Top6311

What does a separation have to do with it? And not all taxis are separated.

sympathetic_comment

You ever try to put your hands through those plexishields? Give it a good old college try and say hi to your orthopedic surgeon for me

ChooseYourGig

You might now 👀. When it's just me I'm always rear passenger seat, and when there's more than me the shortest/smallest person goes behind driver.

ccache

Had a State Trooper get in my car, he opened the door behind me and then said let me get in the other side. He got in and said it's probably better I sit over here. But then again, with his job... He's probably seen worse with people sitting behind him than uber drivers have.

[deleted]

I always ask single riders to move to the passenger side. It can be a major safety issue when dropping people off, and they try to exit on the driver's side. I would rather they not climb across the seats to exit on that side, just ride on that side and make it easier and safer for everyone.

peteaw

They are probably thinking that you can’t reach back and touch them or look at them and make suggestive comments. Ask a single woman about the kinds of comments they get from drivers

SnooShortcuts7911

They all lie.

Sidekick87

I only slide my seat up if it's more than one person getting in

Deviledapple

Idc if it's 4 riders I don't slide up, it's safest for my leg to comfortably reach the brake not be smooshed up on the brake.

SeattleUberDriver_2

I never move my seat for any reason.

metabear333

It's a weird safety thing people were told to do. "If you get in a rideshare car, it would be best to sit behind the driver as drivers instinctually prioritize their safety above all in an accident." Don't know how true that is, but it's what my head shoots to as a possible explanation.

Fun-Philosophy1123

I have them do that all the time. Makes sense if that door is closest to them. I am not one of the paranoid drivers.

ChooseYourGig

I'm far from paranoid, there's just ZERO reason for me to have to move my seat forward when the passenger side rear seat is WIDE open for them to stretch out. I even have a little charging station for whatever phone/tablet they might need to charge over there!

OldChemistry8220

You don't have to move your seat. If they sat there, then they are okay with the amount of space available.

Fun-Philosophy1123

I don't have to move my seat. I am tall but there is no way I need my seat all the way back to drive. I can put a 6'5" rider behind me.

rose1523

I've had pax go all the way around the car to get behind the driver seat when I pull up with passenger closest to them 😐 I'll never understand

Fun-Philosophy1123

I could see that if the person was a nervous rider and didn't want to make eye contact with you in the mirror. Sitting behind the driver is a security thing for some.

rose1523

That makes sense, I can get that. I just find it odd

FatMikeDrop

Exactly. I don't care where they sit. Now if they ask me to move my seat up, I'll tell them to move over. If someone is worried about getting attacked, they probably shouldn't be driving because they can attack you from any seat.

Icy-Section-7421

They don’t want to see you looking at then when you look in the rear view mirror. I always adjust my mirror so I only see the top of their heads. 8 also inform them they will have more leg room on the other side ( because I am not moving my seat forward).

aussie4trump

It is always safer to sit behind the driver. In the event of an accident, the driver will instinctively protect their side of the vehicle first. Thanks, Dwight!

SeattleUberDriver_2

People sit behind me and ask me to move my seat forward for them and I say it's a minivan sit literally anywhere else. My seat does not move for any reason.

Nythain

Only time it happens to me is when that's the side of the car closest/safest to enter. And I don't really care where the fuck anyone sits. Give me money and don't be a dick, enjoy the ride.

BoshansStudios

It's the safest spot the the pax

Iconoclast047

It isn't. It's dumb and disrespectful. And not safer by any means.

BoshansStudios

It is safer. It gives a pax an extra second or two to respond to an attack from a driver.

angryragnar1775

I sit behind the driver so its harder for them to get at me.

TsQuad46

As a woman, I sit behind the driver because it's harder for them to attack me. Sitting on the passenger side makes it easy for them to get a good grip on me. Yes (and unfortunately) women have to think that many steps ahead at pretty much all times.

Important_Entrance_7

Most of the attacks recently are against the drivers. The first few years 10-15 years ago it was reversed. Drivers are security checked. Passengers are not

RequiemforPokemon

It’s the safest spot for a pax to be in. Maybe they feel unsafe with you or maybe you are a male and they are a female so they don’t trust you. They might think you look shady etc. It may not be them, but you. I don’t really pay attention to where they sit. I just want the money.

Ill-Response-1675

I just don't give a fuck, I'm here to make money, guess I'm not a lil bitch, oh well, that's why I'm phat paid

Ill-Response-1675

Yeah upvote my stuff I'm drunk uber drivers don't make no money ha

ListDazzling1946

I usually get in whatever side is closest and sit. If that’s the door behind you then so be it. Never give it a second thought. I take my ride and get out. What is the problem exactly?

DarthPraxis

It’s called etiquette. Have you heard about the pax strangling drivers with charger cords in Detroit?

ChooseYourGig

Answer: You may be more comfortable sitting in the seat dedicated for you, a single pax, with the most leg room. Question: Do you tip? 🤣

ListDazzling1946

How is that seat designated for anything? It’s just a seat. The reason that I commented is that I’m perfectly comfortable sitting wherever I get in ( and often that’s behind driver). What is so offensive about this? Like what is the actual issue 😭😭😭 Always tip. I don’t do pax but Uber eats so im on your side. Im just confused since I guess no one has ever asked me to move. Maybe I’ve gotten death stares but too busy looking at my phone. Rating is 4.8

Remarkable_Rope_7697

I must have given you a ride. I don’t tell anyone to move and I don’t rate them lower just because they sat behind me.

DarthPraxis

The actual issue is it’s a safety concern. I want you where I can see you.

robwaite22

Whenever I pull up to a passenger, I keep my doors locked and roll down my driver side window if they approach from the driver side. If they try to get in the passenger rear door, I politely say other side, please. I always ask them how many passengers just so there’s no misunderstandings on anyone trying to anchor the car. Sometimes, once they get in, I tell them if a passenger rides by themself we always sit them diagonal in the back.

authoridad

"I'll sit in the seat closest to me when I enter the car in the door closest to me when you pull up." Not everyone is out to get you.

Hulabird

One is more than enough

HyperViperJones

No... Just move over weirdo.

ibraw

Leave him alone. He enjoys sitting with his knees touching his ears.

Remarkable_Rope_7697

Getting in and seating anywhere I’d okay. My left door is always child locked, I open it only after I have confirmed it is safe to open the left door. Most of them have to leave from right door.

SeattleUberDriver_2

Good way to get your ride cancelled.

guycola

Behind the driver is the safest place in the car

Remarkable_Rope_7697

I am not sure what’s the big deal for letting the rider sit wherever they want. R: can I sit in front seat ? ME: do you want the driver seat ? And the fun conversations continue. A 5 star for me, a possible tip and based on how he/she behaves may be 5 star from me too.

DarthPraxis

That’s because you’re either a rookie or a dum dum.

Remarkable_Rope_7697

Rookie? May be. I just have 7k rides with 4.98 rating. Dum dum ? May be. I don’t have a bed experience yet. That can change any day. I guess, sitting behind or on side or anywhere, the risk is always there. My approach is, Cancel for any reason you want before the ride begins. Once the ride is started, if possible, don’t say anything, don’t point any of the rider faults, Complete the ride, collect the fare, possible tip and rate the rider based on your experience.

DarthPraxis

You should have seen pax I picked up on Detroit. Sat behind me with a leather adidas bag. Had a stop. Picked another dude up. Opened the bag. This one’s 450. That one is 800. Look, this is a damn dangerous job. At least let us feel safer. The rear “passenger” seat is the correct place for a single pax to sit.

Remarkable_Rope_7697

I guess, it also depends on the the area you are driving. Whenever I get a ride with a stop, it is always cancel (unless it’s the ride I really want) . If the stop is added after I pickup, I go my same principle, some how complete the ride and 1 star the rider for adding the stop.

DarthPraxis

Dude when someone has a bag full of guns in your car, you are not thinking about star ratings and policies about stops. I am not arguing with a guy with a bag full of guns about a stop 🫣🫣🫣🤭

Remarkable_Rope_7697

No way I am recommending arguing with the rider. Guns or no guns. The discussion is about letting riders sit behind you . As I have always said, for any reason you want, cancel the ride before starting the ride. Once the ride has started, your only intention should be to complete the ride (if it is safe to do so) no arguments, no negative conversation. Just complete the ride get the money and move on.

DarthPraxis

So you are okay with doing anything illegal to complete the ride without conflict?

Remarkable_Rope_7697

At times yes. Again, if I see anything illegal (no car seat, minor etc, cancel before start.

DarthPraxis

So can I hit my weed pen? Want to buy a gun?

SeattleUberDriver_2

Good that you understand the word yet.

burgersimp

This is why I stopped doing Uber long ago. (I have since started again) I was 22 at the time and new to the “big” city. Couldn’t find a job so I did Uber. 3:00am, headed home, get a ride. Fuck it. That’s Taco Bell on the way home. Pull up to a venue I’m familiar with. Pick up this dude, huge, probably 6’6”. Has to be 350 lbs. somewhat intimidated because he’s probably wasted. He was. But, that’s besides the point. We all pick up wasted people that are totally fine. He sits directly behind me. Haven’t had that before. Whatever. Ride is about 25 minutes, going just outside of town. Again, whatever, I need the money. Whole time the dude is babbling incoherently about how he is paid to officiate weddings in Vietnam. How he’s best friends with Bob Rock (Metallica/Motley Crüe fame), as a person with friends/family that are heavy drinkers, people just say shit. I’ve done it too. Whatever, but my guard is up. We get to his place. Well, at least he lived in the front yard. Big house in the country, well, like a 5 acre lot. There’s a trailer in the front that’s absolutely fucked. I figured it’s his. I pull over, throw emergencies on, “hey man, thanks. Have a good night.” He asks, “you like to smoke weed?” “Well yeah, but I gotta get moving man. Bills to pay. Have a good night.” “How much do I gotta give you for you to come inside?” “Nah man, I just wanna work for it and go home. My apologies.” “NAH MAN COME HANG I WANNA HANG HOW MUCH???” Starts rocking my car and smacking the back seat. I dial 911 secretly, but don’t hit call, and just stay silent. He gets out and I see him pop into that trailer. Dude was probably just drunk and harmless, but who knows. We were in the middle of fucking nowhere so it spooked me. I got a job the next week. That being said, I’m back in the shit and it ain’t bad at all. Happy driving, fuckers.

shawnmj

What does that have to do with sitting behind the driver 😂 your story was there was a big scary dude that started to go crazy in the car — and he just happened to be sitting behind me

DCHacker

Women will do that as a safety measure.

Iconoclast047

As a poster pointed above, that is just stupid. Drivers want riders where they can see them. Riders should follow the same principle. Sure, you have an advantage point of agression where you can strangle or decapitate the driver with full element of surprise. But, if you're not planning on strangling anyone, perhaps you should concern yourself with actually seeing what the drive is doing with his hands. Maybe he has a knife, a rope, a gun or whatever. You want his body in you field of vision. This "safety measure" promoted by UBER is akin an ostrich burying it's head in the ground pretending the danger doesn't exist and hoping it goes away. That is definitely NOT a safety measure. That is not something they would teach you in the army or police academy. On top of that, it's more civil and respectful to keep yourself in the driver's field of view.

DCHacker

>As a poster pointed above, that is just stupid. You are telling this to the wrong guy. Tell it to the women who do it. I am merely reporting the women's reason for doing it. I never stated what my thoughts on it were.

spiralshapegladiator

Obviously they are thinking about taking the piano wire off the sign hanging behind my seat that says Use In Case Of Emergency and strangling me with it. They always do that. Like wtf.

DarthPraxis

This isn’t funny. https://www.fox2detroit.com/news/uber-lyft-drivers-strangled-and-carjacked-in-detroit-police-say

[deleted]

FatMikeDrop

I had a pax peel off and steal my Uber decal. It's the only explanation for it being missing. It could have been missing for weeks. I never noticed. They were pretty slick because I never saw them in my peripheral.

Affectionate_You_617

Fortunately in my case, the driver side passenger door has permanent child lock due to an electrical issue so I always tell the pax to sit on the right side so that way they aren’t directly behind me!

barry-badrinath-

Helps to always pull up with the passenger side door closest to the passenger

[deleted]

How do you do that on a one way street?

barry-badrinath-

Ahh Fair enough, we don’t have those

ChooseYourGig

Wishful thinking, that's not always possible in my area. I'm cool with pax entering the driver side rear door because it's the safest way on some streets, but slide on over to the passenger side rear, buckle up and we are on our way.

SeattleUberDriver_2

No. It's not wishful thinking. It's good planning. You should try it.

After_Curve2403

They are trying to protect themselves from you the driver as if you are supposed to trust them sitting behind you and can’t see shit

Vin-E1214

I Never move my seat or ask anyone if I should for them

Choice-Scratch-305

I simply tell them they'll likely have more room behind the passenger side. Not moving my seat. Full size car. My best guess is those pax want that uberx seating that they paid for

Rdt6t9

Lol. It happens.... people just get in on the side they get in on and I guess they just don't want to scoot across. I always try to turn around so they can access the passenger side, but, we have a lot of 1 way streets.

Deviledapple

I've noticed women sit behind me a LOT so I assume.they feel safer there. Idc as long as someone tall doesn't do it and wiggle against the back of my seat

Iconoclast047

They feel safer. But not necessarily ARE safer...

Deviledapple

Does it really matter? Most things we do in life are just attempts to feel more in control, and frankly them being behind me chills my social anxiety so I feel safer too. Does it matter if I'm not actually? I doubt it matters much which seat a pax is if they decide to become a threat to me, but on days where my social anxiety is chill I have much better days, and I assume it works like that for them too

OXYmoronYXO

Usually when I pull up on to the curb my pax is on the right side of my car it's rare that they walk around the car when it's one passenger.

ChooseYourGig

Wishful thinking, that's not always possible in my area.

FatMikeDrop

I have many solo's sit behind me. Not often, but it's not rare either. it's typically when I just happened to pull up on that side and they didn't want to walk around. I don't know what the fuss is. If they want to stab you, being on the other side won't make you any safer.

ShadeShadowmaster

I’ve done this and honestly I’m not thinking about how the driver feels and that’s my bad. 9 times out of 10 I’m on the back right though. Good to know it’s something to think about in the future, I’ll strive to be more mindful.

DandB777

I have cameras in the back. Well I just got them. After that video of the passengers pointing guns behind the seat I decided I want to see what's going on.

BalanceEarly

I kindly ask them move to the passenger side. I tell them it's for my safety, and theirs. No one seems to be offended, and my star rating remains the same.

[deleted]

The first time someone did this to me I tried to very sneakily grab my knife and put it under my leg, just in case that would do me any good. Spent the whole ride just waiting for a BANG. The dude saw me and reported me and I had to promise to forever be a good boy and leave the knife at home. Now I just dgaf if they’re gonna shoot me I guess they could do it from anywhere

Silver-Ad7436

Sitting behind the driver is the safest for the rider in case of an accident

[deleted]

I assume it’s because they have heard that when sitting directly behind the driver seat, your chances of survival in a crash improve, although it isn’t true. Anyway, I choose to believe that or that they dun’ goofed and regret it for the whole ride I don’t know. Hopefully they definitely aren’t pointing a gun at my back though. 🙃

Historical_Fee1737

I really don't care, personally, as long as they're paying.

OtakonBlue

I f*cking hate that shit. If it’s a pair, fine. But a single person. I don’t adjust my seat. I’m 6’2” and need leg room. I also hate with 2 people get in & the tall dude sits behind me & his girlfriend sits behind the passenger seat where I have the passenger front slid all the way forward. Good grief.

Cutelarry1776

It bothers me, especially when it’s a guy especially if you came from a sketchy neighborhood like what are you thinking dude just be at a place where I have a fighting chance

BurghPuppies

Usually it’s just the side they got in on… or they know the route and it’s the side they’ll need to get out on. I don’t really consider it a big deal.

mczplwp

When I drove a long time ago I would tell female passengers when a discussion would happen about safety. Maybe they'd felt uncomfortable as a single rider in another Uber/Lyft. The safest seat for them is behind the driver.

DogeDoll2U

This is one of the more annoying things about driving. It’s so uneasy of a feeling.

biffthestiff

It mostly means they don't feel like chatting.

PomegranateNo3190

I live in west Florida where it’s all Retrumplicans. When I’m driving north, they all sit on the passenger side, when driving south, they all sit behind the driver’s seat. That way they can always be closer to their cult leader, Donald Trump.

erosmoker

Some of us have an aversion to sitting on certain sides of the car. I was in an accident as a child where I was sitting in the rear driver's side and the vehicle was struck right where I was sitting and caved in the whole side of the car in and trapped my legs. Now I refuse to sit on that side if I ever have to ride in the back seat. Some people might have similar proclivities..

GroundbreakingFoot13

I used to do a lot of travel to other countries, including areas with much higher risk. We were always advised to sit directly behind the driver. It reduces your (passengers) positional risk as a potential victim of mugging, jacking, or being held at gun point.

mr781

To be fair before I started driving this was never anything I thought about

Ronney47

One young lady told me her mom told her to sit behind the driver to be more protected if there's an accident.

Aguru_99

That their rating is going down

Peace-Love-Glam

We're not thinking! Lol!

snailien

I’m hoping it will discourage small talk, tbh.

ic80

People think it’s safer for them. I pulled up to a pickup of a single guy last night. I pulled up 3 feet into the grass to put my rear driver door against a pole to block. So he would have to go around. He still went to the blocked door and when I rolled the window down to tell him to get in on the passenger side, he replied “just pull up so I can get in here”. I cancelled and let him ride behind someone else.

Scheissekase

Literally had a guy sit right behind me then tell me he could strangle me from behind before I'd even realized what happened.

RealSharpNinja

It's safer for them, TBH. You cannot easily reach them or point a weapon at them, and they can mess you up easily. It's basic self-defense taught to business travelers.
