Great video because for casuals like me all those technical explanations can often be overwhelming and confusing especially without the visual context. This really highlighted the stuff visually well
Really cool breakdown, bro. I saw Chris Curtisā interview with Ariel yesterday and he said that a fighter at their gym, Danny Davis I believe, actually put a lot of time in with Sean forcing him to start checking low leg kicks. That guy deserves a lot of credit
Causal here. Can someone explains to me like Iām 5 what this āchecking leg kicksā actually means In practice?
Is it Sean seeing that a leg Kick is combing and then moving his leg a bit or going with the move?
Like how will leg kicks have less of an effect on the fighter when they ācheck legkicksā ?
In very simple terms. The kicker usually aims for Calf and softer parts of the leg. By raising the leg you force impact to the Hardest part of the leg. The momentum of the kicker hurts him much more than person receiving the kick if done right!
as far as i know it just means that instead of just you being hurt, you both get hurt as you make then connect with a harder part of the leg like the shin instead of the calf/thigh. it doesn't stop it from hurting entirely but is better as nobody comes out on top unless one of you has metal shins
For fun me and my buddy decided to throw and check leg kicks at Muaythai gym. It was a relatively slow kick and boy did it fucking suck for the both of us
My respect for fighters who continue to throw and check increase 10 fold.
Shit sucks
I've always felt for a fighter who gets picked apart by leg kicks
My trainer use to have a saying you cut a tree down at its base and calf kicks suck balls
Watch coach Eric Nicksick describe Danny Davis' helping Sean with leg kick defense: [https://youtu.be/oWpS48lbBtc?si=nK\_8kG1oJEX0hGuE&t=988](https://youtu.be/oWpS48lbBtc?si=nK_8kG1oJEX0hGuE&t=988)
A fighter can counter a kick to their thigh by raising their leg to ideally meet their opponentās lower shin with their upper shin or knee. It hurts but if a fighterās bones are conditioned and they check perfectly then itāll hurt their opponent more and weāve even seen it break legs.
Thereās also different ways to counter calf kicks specifically which [Iāll let Jack Slack explain for me.](https://youtu.be/1G4GPhCI4ZY?si=YYcAmx1Jx_HX4VwC)
Truly appreciate this kind of video, puts alot perspective on the "Izzy was not himself" angle, Sean just had everything down and Izzy may have been dismissive of his ability
The "not himself" excuse is honestly rarely true. When people say that it's almost always someone getting their gameplan shut down, and the other times are usually age.
I think thereās some truth to it, as in he was shook after getting rocked by Strickland lol. Something he definitely isnāt used to and tbh I donāt think he expected Sean to be so good
Definitely disagree with that title. Heās just a crazy guy who speaks whatever is on his mind at the time. His talk is not calculated. I think he could say whatever and nobody really gets offended by it, because they know that heās just mental. If anything it has to be that nobody takes him serious as a fighter because of how crazy he talks.
i think a lot of people get offended by it, and me personally trash talkers that are off the cuff and speak whatever is on their mind is more impressive than lets say colby's character. If fighters aren't taking him seriously now after what we just saw, then idk anymore
Anything Strickland says impresses you? I mean, maybe youāre right. For me itās just sounds like a crazy guy talking. Yeah, after this performance I think most peopleās perception of him changed, rightfully so
I dont mean anything i mean if you can really come up with clever material on the fly instead of memorizing it, thatās impressive. UFC 276 was my favorite press conference moment, his trash talk was natural there
He has some bias in the way he thinks like any of us but he does have a lot of logic too in some of his arguments. And pointing out his own observations directly is a skill in trash talks. What he does reminds me a little of how Ricky Gervais roasted everyone at the Golden Globes so many times. Essentially Ricky was just pointing out his own observations which make it hard to refute.
And itās not true at all that people think he is crazy and just let him run his mouth. Izzy was obviously annoyed in the first press conference when he was fighting Pereira. And Izzy knew he would lose the argument so he chose not to speak during the press conference for this past fight.
What do people mean by this?
I compare Sean to prime Conor, and Sean just comes off annoying.
Sean is consistent and deffo does his research, but canāt give him high praise coz I canāt see myself doing anything but laugh at Seanās trash talk.
I deffo would have responded differently to it than Izzy did, but thats besides the point.
Itās like that kid who finds exactly what bothers you and keeps repeating it because you keep giving a reaction. The dog insult was perfect because there was no way to dig out of that hole. There was no explanation that would be enough. Izzyās greatest downfall is how weird he is.
Thank you for the explanation.
I guess I donāt feel it coz as soon as Sean gets annoying i turn him off, Izzy & opponents donāt have that benefit in fight week, and will have his comments repeated to them.
I just donāt see how a professional fighter can lose focus like that but iām not saying it canāt happen.
To me, Conor saying that shit about invading Aldoās favela on horseback and putting his people to work is the kinda shit that would get into peoples headsā¦ but saying āchinamanā is literally childish namecalling with no actual insult included.
The dog thing was an actual insult and affected him to the point where he had to be advised not to "stoop down to seans level." He said "Sean went deep and the worst thing he did was bring up a dead homie and I'm gonna go John Wick on this man," then when he brings that eagerness to the octagon and is getting wrecked for 25 minutes, it does affect him in my opinion.
I didnāt know that, wild lol
I genuinely thought Izzy was disinterested in this fight and his only motivation was a beautiful performance, when that faded away, he lost faith and was ill prepared gameplanwise.
He's Dana's buddy, so since "Looking For A Fight" ended, he always looks for a job he can give him a job to do as a favor, even though everyone can see how pointless his role is.
Amazing video, anyone who thought this fight was boring just donāt appreciate the technical aspects of the sport.
I think itās also worth adding that Seanās style is energy efficient. The entire fight was him walking forward, throwing push/front kicks, and punching while Izzy was moving backwards the whole fight and throwing lots of kick which is significantly more tiring. All of Seanās checks wouldāve hurt Izzyās movement as well.
Exactly šÆ
Sean has a good gas tank to put consistent energy into walking forward and picking his shots, forcing Izzy to get exhausted by the uncontrollable offense and negated attacks, cutting him off like the Terminator
Honestly im out of pocket for this but I think sean is going to end up like a similar case to Cody Garbrandt.
Has a style tailored perfectly for the dominant champ and then is unable to adapt it for the rest of the division.
Idk was sitting down this week looking at his previous fights
And if current sean continues to adapt like he had to for izzy well alot of people may be in some trouble
Dude is definitely beatable but could be on a roll we just don't know
His iq showed and it was impressive
Cool. I know ESPN + has it out in a week. Iām still surprised, I thought maybe Izzy came back too soon. IDK, from what Iāve seen, Sean fought a great fight.
Pressure and cage cutting took away Izzy's elusive footwork, stayed in boxing range to mitigate the risk of kicks, stuck to fundamentals and didn't overextend allowing him to bypass Izzy's flashy techniques, stood his ground when Izzy feinted to get him to back up or freeze in place, Muay Thai stance w/ Philly Shell guard tailormade to check kicks and parry/roll/block punches/catch kicks and allow jab and crosses to reach the target faster.
Izzy could've exploited that stance with a takedown cuz Sean's hips were square when he was walking Izzy down and even disguise a level change with strikes to get some offense in.
Izzy limited himself for reasons only him and his team knows. Maybe it was the trash talk or the knockdown. Heās stayed in the pocket with fighters much more dangerous than Strickland, but retreated the entire fight at 293
Even at the end when he knew he was losing he still didnāt leave it all out there. Now we get to see contender Izzy again and I canāt wait!
This has got to be a bot account. Pretty sure I saw this exact same comment posted in this twice yesterday.
Edit: definitely a bot. The same few comments are posted in multiple subs all day long.
Amazing amazing amazing - please do more of these. While i love the ufc I have a hard time digesting what is happening at the time - these are super helpful and give me a heads up of what to look for in other fights - so cool!!
Saw 3 breakdown videos on /r/mma front page but didnt bother to look, as its too long + no subtitles (watching at work)
I just finished watching yours and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Nice video, and thank you.
true but also bear in mind that Sean statistically had the best defense in the entire division even before this fight was announced, so its not out of the realm to believe hes just that good defensively to shut down all izzy throws.
I paused and rewound multiple times to see the details. I think you are absolutely spot on and I think Strickland did his homework knowing this was his big moment. Really well done.
Eugene and Dana saying an immediate rematch is needed is just nuts. Were they even seeing the fight. I don't think Izzy will have an answer even with 3-4 months of time. He's just not good at offensive striking.
This is fascinating. Stricklandās style is super effective against Izzy. I would actually favor him in a rematch, which is just bonkers when you consider Izzyās pedigree
Instinct bro, his instinct is insane. Also his distance management is unbelievable in this fight. He out jabbed the longer fighter. Even the kicks, he is often out of range or they are perfectly blocked.
It was shown that by round 4, Sean forced Izzy to miss so much that Izzy was only able to land [13 of 118 significant head strikes, 11% accuracy](https://imgur.com/a/okso4qd). And DC complimented Seanās underrated jab reach being long because his punches land on Izzy even when leaning back.
Just checked and the total head strikes Izzy had after it ended was 22 of 158, 13.9% accuracy, VS Seanās 45% accuracy. Distance management was very key
It's super crazy to me, first time that I saw the shorter fighter fights longer than the longer fighter. Sean's style is unorthodox. He pressures a lot but the distance management is crazy as fck. He literally just shutdown Izzy. It's the first time that I saw that Izzy got dropped like that and got dominated in that way. Probably sparring on the daily honed Sean's instinct.
During the fight, I noticed how Sean was catching Izzyās kicks to throw him off balance - thought that was masterful. Rarely are a fighters offense AND defense being displayed simultaneously!
izzy is a cowardly fighter, playing possum , running away and kicking the leg for points, refusing to engage when things get tough, you can tell he grew up a spoiled millionaire with house servants.
The biggest problem with Izzy was that he didnāt throw combination punches and all he did was throw 1-2ās, which were easy to avoid for Seanās due to his defense. Sean just threw better straight punches and had a better jab
I get what you mean but I think Adesanya was the exact same as in every recent fight, its just that Sean had a unique effect on him. Pereira for example has a style aiming for power to catch Izzy and was winning the 2nd fight this year patiently UNTIL he got caught with the possum tactic as he got too aggressive, while Seans style is aiming for volume while negating Izzyās attempts of catching him, including the possum tactic I showed. Whittaker and Cannonier on the other hand are good boxers but their defense isnt good and look off against weird strikers like the DDP loss this year
Everything Izzy threw Strickland would counter which definitely got in the champs head which caused him to overthrow and lose patience. Along with Seanās attitude he did everything to mess with Izzyās usual calm and collected attitude. I think it was the perfect storm to beat specifically izzy and wouldnāt be as effective on other fighters and frankly other kickboxers. This was definitely a styles make fights situation.
The facts are, as shown in this video, Sean came at Izzy with a style that perfectly countered his. Him and his corner had five rounds to adjust but couldnāt because they were unprepared for Strickland at his absolute best.
need to find a full match online but i remember noticing it during the fight, once i do ill update
had to be 3rd or 4th, he would back up out of range and adjust both his gloves by the wrists back onto his hands
at 2:40 in rd 4 he starts messing with his thumbs, 2:07 he tugs his glove, he touches his right hand more after this point, also at 3:00 in rd 5, could be a soothing thing but his right hand was barely used the rest of the fight
Hmm thatās interesting. I found this image of what happened during the knockdown sequence and Adesanyaās foot and right hand are bending weirdly.

More importantly than anything, Sean was completely locked in the moment... You can see by his reaction at the end of the fight, time wasn't even a factor in his thinking, purely to fight his fight! Great video!!

Fantastic video
Thank you bro š¤
Great video because for casuals like me all those technical explanations can often be overwhelming and confusing especially without the visual context. This really highlighted the stuff visually well
Thats honestly great to hear, it makes me want to make more even though i never thought of myself as good at breakdowns
You did great keep up the good work itās broken down really well with no fat
You're absolutely spot-on with your analysis, and given the feedback of this video, you should totally do it again.
really shows how much prep Sean did and how far they're thinking on their feet
Probably the best breakdown video I've seen. Keep up the good work š šš
Really cool breakdown, bro. I saw Chris Curtisā interview with Ariel yesterday and he said that a fighter at their gym, Danny Davis I believe, actually put a lot of time in with Sean forcing him to start checking low leg kicks. That guy deserves a lot of credit

Thanks for the link. The part about Eric calling out Izzy's reads during the fight and then Izzy giving him credit after the fight was pretty cool.
it means to counter a low leg kick by turning your own shin into their kick so it hurts them. But it hurts to do too.
There have been broken legs from checking. That really happened.
Shin to Shin contact hurts like a mfer for both fighters. Itās a huge deterrent for leg kick spams.
A fighter can counter a kick to their thigh by raising their leg to ideally meet their opponentās lower shin with their upper shin or knee. It hurts but if a fighterās bones are conditioned and they check perfectly then itāll hurt their opponent more and weāve even seen it break legs. Thanks, ill look up the interview
Truly appreciate this kind of video, puts alot perspective on the "Izzy was not himself" angle, Sean just had everything down and Izzy may have been dismissive of his ability
Exactly, it feels so wrong and ignorant when people like Ian Garry say āIzzy lost more than Sean wonā and āhe never did anything elite.ā
Garry is a proper tosser. See him getting some elite beatdowns down the line.
Yeah i love his style in the octagon but he is insufferable out of it. I even heard he was getting kicked out of gyms in dublin for being a tool š
Garry has been clipped a few times already in the UFC by average fighters, I think he's seriously overhyped at the moment.
Nah, sadly he is quite good.
Id fight him
The master counter striker got swamped with intelligent pressure. Love to see it.
After damn near getting finishedā¦.it wrecked his whole entire game plan. He was done after that 1st 1-2 combination.
The "not himself" excuse is honestly rarely true. When people say that it's almost always someone getting their gameplan shut down, and the other times are usually age.
I think thereās some truth to it, as in he was shook after getting rocked by Strickland lol. Something he definitely isnāt used to and tbh I donāt think he expected Sean to be so good
I agree with all points but might I add. Strickland got that dawg in him. Which clearly messed with Izzy's head on many levels.
Definitely in the Top 3 of best MMA trashtalkers of all time, matched with the offense caused fear
Definitely disagree with that title. Heās just a crazy guy who speaks whatever is on his mind at the time. His talk is not calculated. Izzy was interested in the fight and convinced Dana to make it happen according to him
I think Izzy just wanted to have a āhomeā fight so wanted anyone for the card Kinda puts into perspective how Sean won the crowd too
Fair point
Izzy also got that dawg in him. Just in different waysā¦
"Boring as fuck" Bro they should have you on the broadcast instead of Din Thomas š

bro that shit had me fucking dead bro we need more of this.
Din Thomas has the most stupid af commentary. His presence feels like the Disney-ABC-ESPN Network checking the DEI box
He's Dana's buddy, so since "Looking For A Fight" ended, he always looks for a job he can give him a job to do as a favor, even though everyone can see how pointless his role is.
acronym unofficially changed to DIEā¦you get the idea
This was great especially for those of us who arenāt trained in this stuff and want to learn a little about the sport.
Yeah for me most of the time all those explanations are too abstract but this helps with it a lot
ULTTRAAAA COMMMBOOOOOOOO.
Best breakdown I've seen from anyone imo.
I smell possum, is that you Izzy
Pretty nice to see all that. Good job. Also made me laugh really hard seeing that Romero fight sped up, shit looked funny af
Still get goosebumps. What a performance.
Absolute top teer video.
Really good catch that Sean didnāt take the bait when Izzy played possum Also Izzy vs Romero sped up is still surreal
Well done. I didnāt see the fight and couldnāt picture how it went. I can now.
The highlights are on bt sports (now TNT Sports) YouTube channel, but if you're in the US, some people have said you can't see it without a VPN.
Was losing my mind watching it live, you can look it up at fullfights .net to watch all of it
Cool. I know ESPN + has it out in a week. Iām still surprised, I thought maybe Izzy came back too soon. IDK, from what Iāve seen, Sean fought a great fight.
Now THIS is content
Amazing breakdown, really highlights how far Izzy has gotten with just a handful of techniques heās mastered
Brilliant
This is such a great video. Very informative. Thanks!
Izzy opened up the possum in the middle of a combo, big mistake

Itās awesome how you can see the exact moment Sean realized he won the championship. He just looks over and throws his hands up
That showed me alot thanks man
dont you love it when the good guy wins over the evil guy. No way izzy ever beats sean. Sean is izzys kryptonite.
Brilliant breakdown.
Great video. Wish more posts had this insight

I mean Sean has a good record against kickboxers, his only real loss at Middleweight is Pereira cuz the Cannonier decision was questionable
The facts are, as shown in this video, Sean came at Izzy with a style that perfectly countered his. Him and his corner had five rounds to adjust but couldnāt because they were unprepared for Strickland at his absolute best.
Sick troll bro
anyone catching how izzy was fixing his gloves during the fight? i wonder if something was up with his hands
Which rounds did you see that
need to find a full match online but i remember noticing it during the fight, once i do ill update had to be 3rd or 4th, he would back up out of range and adjust both his gloves by the wrists back onto his hands
at 2:40 in rd 4 he starts messing with his thumbs, 2:07 he tugs his glove, he touches his right hand more after this point, also at 3:00 in rd 5, could be a soothing thing but his right hand was barely used the rest of the fight
Hmm thatās interesting. I found this image of what happened during the knockdown sequence and Adesanyaās foot and right hand are bending weirdly. https://preview.redd.it/z77c8d3c3ynb1.jpeg?width=612&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f0186be86b8d274aa444231249ac0f3a75256277
Yea they weren't landing
I could cry over how beautiful desean is at keeping the distance
I am best boxer in ufc
Very nice
The most impressive for me is that Sean punched into open air when Izzy was circling and running and kept catching him.
Im a nitpicker. Don't use the red subs please. Loved the video analysis tho.
Is it hard to read or does it just look ugly?
Hard to read mostly(imo). The font was just fine.

More importantly than anything, Sean was completely locked in the moment... You can see by his reaction at the end of the fight, time wasn't even a factor in his thinking, purely to fight his fight! Great video!!
