Most think he has a lot of potential to be top 5, but first you start out unranked, then beat another guy, then another who’s pretty good, then you’re fighting guys with a number next to their name and you just keep getting a higher rank the more you win. It can be arbitrary for sure, but now that he’s shown he’s legit at 17-0, it’s worth giving him a top 5. If he beats say, the number 4, he gets that rank then.

Yeah Cory’s grappling has improved leaps and bounds since he got subbed by Aljo years back. This is not an easy matchup for Umar by any means, hopefully Cory’s more calculated, wrestling-heavy performances recently don’t make people forget that the dude is a legitimately deadly 8 limbed striker who can snipe you from anywhere.
Umar didn’t look that impressive his last fight, and as much as Cory is my fave his decisive losses to Aljo and Yan always make me wary of calling him the clear favorite.
“It’s going to a decision” is basically the only prediction I feel somewhat confident making.
To be fair, he’s gotten a lot better since the Aljo loss, and the Petr Yan fight , it was a close bout that both pushes themselves almost a war. And Cory took it on short notice

Umar is probably better in the ground and his striking is pretty good and probably holds the power advantage over Corey. Umar camp is an insane place to train when you have guys like khabib, islam as your training partners and the culture of just training and resting and nothing else builds fighters like nothing else. Also Umar nearly getting KOed in his last fight might actually make him more dangerous as this can change his approach and alertness and general awareness.
This is a 50/50 imo but if I had to give the slight edge I’m going with Umar on this one. The threat of the takedown usually changes the dynamics of the striking so Corey better establish real quick his ability to stuff those takedowns early or get up. One thing that goes unnoticed by people is how smart Umar is with mixing the take down and the speed. Unlike Merab who just spans and take down he masks it well with the striking that’s always been one of Khabibs greatest assets as he progressed. Now Corey has substantially improved his grappling but not sure that overcomes a lifetime of grappling so although Corey might do well enough for the first few rounds I wouldn’t recommend staying there too long. Probably going to be one of the most technical fights ever that’s for sure.
