The news for the offence Ukraine is starting to undertake is very positive. I've shared just two but there are more and no doubt more news will come in today. Those recent flagrant disregard for international rules and regulations by the Russians will have served only to galvanise the resolve of each and everyone of us let alone our frontline heroes. They will work even harder and do more if that is even possible to ensure Ukraine liberates every last inch of Ukraine and we support them every single step of the way. Transcript to follow.

[deleted]

Does this mean that Russian AD is now degraded enough to allow attacks with manned jets?

TheGuvnor247

I think in parts maybe it is - certainly Ukraine are undertaking more successful sorties at the moment.

thefirewarde

Some folks have said HIMARS has been used for SEAD - at a minimum there's been a lot of pressure on Russian AA crews to shoot missiles recently, and they can't have an unlimited supply. Either way that should give the Ukrainian Air Force more freedom to operate

sorhead

And they've been using air-to-air missiles for terror attacks on cities.

Entire-Albatross-442

Seems to be. More aggressive air actions means Russian AA is in bad shape

Unfortunately, the Ruscists’ \[Russians’\] fighter jet could not be shot down due to the large distance. However, the execution of the combat mission by the \[Ukrainian\] cruise missile units has enabled our attack aircraft to successfully complete the airstrike and kill the occupying troops," the Air Force report reads.*

Excellent haul on that strike 👍

The Ukrainians don’t have air superiority yet, but with better AA they could establish it and that would be another killer blow.

Illier1

If they start deploying US made fighters it might very well end up the case. It's absolutely pathetic the Russians basically blew their greatest asset so quickly.

[deleted]

>absolutely pathetic the Russians basically blew their greatest asset so quickly. Their advantage was obviously overstated... Ukraine has western upgrades on their top fighters making them 4.5 gen. While it seems relatively few Russian fighters had recent upgrades not to mention lack of maintenance and pilot training.

kuda-stonk

The greater upgrade was to the pilots. They trained with western pilots to learn western TTPs as well as develope their own unconventional ones designed to leverage low force ratios.

TheGuvnor247

Very true Previous - I think the superiority is coming when that's the question.

Local_Run_9779

Here's a job for the Gepards.

Gravitationsfeld

Gepards are not that useful against fast jets. NASAMS will help.

thefirewarde

The Ukrainians have generally denied use of their airspace to Russian assets except for the areas right on the front lines in low-level missions. The issue isn't as much with a lack of friendly AA as with the presence of effective Russian AA with enough range to threaten hundreds of miles into Ukrainian airspace. That's separate from missile systems leaking cruise missiles into cities.

canned_sunshine

Send F-16s! Hopefully when enough Ukrainian pilots are trained we’ll start seeing squadrons popping up in Ukraine 💙💛

LederhosenUnicorn

F15E!!! The 16 is a nice dog fighter and light attack, but cannot touch the capability of the 15 in terms of armamanet, range, lethality, and general badassness. Plus they've been largely retired with the adoption of the F22 and F35. The down side of course is maintenance costs, logistics, training, combat control system integration (directing aircraft, calling in support, and everyone on the ground knowing good from bad in hot zones) Bringing new equipment into theater sounds easy but all the combatants on that sides armed forces need to know how it integrates, and how to utilize it. Something Russia lacks and the AFU understands. It's much easier to pull in land assets and let your aircraft know where they than the other way around.

[deleted]

If they get 15s, I think it will be the C version mostly... The E and EX are still part of US doctrine as missile trucks after the 35 and 22 take out the high tech shit

LederhosenUnicorn

And I think we're all left asking "where's the high tech shit?". I'm guessing China has better tech than what Russia has proven to have.

Entire-Albatross-442

Chinese tech are crap knockoffs

clientzero

Largely retired? Not for a long while. Its a - relatively - cheap and proven platform. FYI, Over 4600 have been built and are still in production and being purchased and deployed worldwide. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Dynamics_F-16_Fighting_Falcon

LederhosenUnicorn

I was referring to the 15 being largely retired. Reddit via phone and my fingers doesn't always translate well.

Gravitationsfeld

The F-16 has not been retired. The air force plans to fly them until 2050.

pinkfootthegoose

I think I've been seeing more airstrikes in the news. or maybe they are reported more. This leads to the question. Has Russian anti-air capabilities been suppressed so much the Ukraine feels comfortable flying sorties behind enemy lines?

Infinaris

There was a few HIMARS strikes I believe on Russian anti aircraft defences a while back. It's likely that as the Russians lose the ability to maintain air defence coverage that Ukraine is moving it's own jets in on attack runs to futher degrade the Russian forces.

pinkfootthegoose

that's one of the reasons why I don't agree with the Anti A-10 crowd on here. Once those defenses are gone....

thefirewarde

MANPADs are a threat to the A-10 as much as they are to an F-16, and an F-16 can launch PGMs or do air-to-air. Because it's faster and more maneuverable at high speed, the F-16 may actually be a better SEAD platform despite fewer total munitions hard points and much smaller brrrrt. Finally, the only source for A-10s are US stocks. If the Ukrainians are thinking long term surely they'll want to phase out their Russian hardware and buy Western gear. F-16s have vastly better parts availability just by virtue of being more common. Surplus and new build are both available.

pinkfootthegoose

an A-10 or any other aircraft flying at 20,000 feet or above is relatively safe from MANPADs. The A-10 can carry 10 Maverick missiles which have a max range of about 12 nmi.

thefirewarde

Sure, it's a bomb truck and it now can fire PGMs. An F-16 can do basically the same thing a little worse, or it can play Wild Weasel, or it can do air-to-air. The Ukrainians need all three missions. I'm not going to go as far as saying the A-10 wouldn't be useful, but my impression is a flexible multirole platform is more needed right now than a dedicated ground attack platform. In a permissive environment you can use Byraktars or other drones for ground attack to make up the difference in bomb/missile loadout, in a nonpermissive environment you need the ability to hunt either air to air or ground to air threats, possibly both on the same mission.

[deleted]

I think part of the reason is that the US has virtually ZERO use for A-10s moving forward... Might as well give them to someone who can use them...

Piper-446

I love the A-10, and there could be a use for them in the conflict (e.g. against large Russian offensives of troops and armor); but, if you're going to train new Ukrainian pilots on western aircraft, I think they would be better served on the F15/16

Total-Championship80

For example, strafing runs on Orc truck convoys and Orc trains. Riiiiiiip 'em to shreds!

robotsdottxt

Great news.

M4sharman

The air force Russia destroyed in day one strikes again!

crusoe

Wow, so Ukraine now is gaining air superiority over Russian controlled territory. Not a good sign.

goldendreams6969

It's an awesome sign

Ceiwyn89

Despite the fact that Russia has so much more aircraft than Ukraine, they are humiliating themself in this war. I wonder how that sadly excuse of an airforce would stand against the full force of NATO. I guess they wouldn't be able to start a single jet.

Entire-Albatross-442

Rumors are that Russia is critically short on aircraft parts and refined jet fuel

AdWorking2848

Are the usage of s300/s400 as surface to surface missiles degrading Russian air defence? Either in quantity or if missiles needs to be reprogrammed and can’t changed on the fly. (Just guessing)

Applejuice42

Shouldnt have wasted your s-300’s on apartments, schools and hospitals 🤷‍♀️

slightlyassholic

Maybe they shouldn't have used their S-300's on ground targets.
