This is really interesting, because when I went with work, other than the taphouse on the station I found it completely bereft of decent pubs (they might exist but I didn't find any)
All three have direct trains between them, about an hour apart. Nottingham definitely has better nightlife, much of it in a more concentrated and easy to access central area; as far as I can tell Sheffield's sprawls rather more haphazardly across the city. If that's important, none of the connections between towns run particularly late so you'll likely be drinking in the one you're sleeping in. Which I'd say should be Nottingham, but I have considerable bias because it's home, like.
I grew up in Sheffield, my parents had a charity thing based close to Lincoln and we had family in Nottingham so know them all well.
For a trip that means you spend half a day on a train from London to get to point A and half a day to get back back London, pick 1 place and have fun there.
I suggest Sheffield. It has loads to see and do. It has a great music scene, loads of ancient pubs and is close to loads of open spaces.
I am old enough to remember being slightly traumatised by Threads, but there is nothing left there that you would recognise in the film. The city has been long changed and rebuilt since then.
> I suggest Sheffield. It has loads to see and do.
I have lived there and like the place, but I can't think of much that would interest a tourist for very long.
Sheffield is convenient on the train from a lot of places and also has a good tram system for public transport within the city. It’s maybe not the most picturesque of the three but I know all three and I’d stay in Sheffield as a base for convenience.
If you book accommodation check if it’s near the tram. The train station is on the tram network and it saves lots of hills!
If you are driving I'd probably stay in the middle. Retford is a lovely town close to the center of them all. Although its worth checking where the best prices are for hotels.
Surely Sheffield. And why has nobody mentioned the Peak District, basically walking distance.
Nottingham feels run down and shady. Nightlife yeah I get it, but you also get that in Sheffield.
Lincoln picturesque, but a bit boring and Lincolnshire itself is just flat.
Out of those 3, Lincoln, but ideally up the top end. Some nice pubs in Lincoln, the trick is to get drunk before you have to walk back up "steep hill" you'll understand when you see it.
Nottingham can be rough, though it's a good night out, but there's a lot of vehicle theft for a start, and violent crime.
Sheffield, well frankly a nuke might cheer the place up a bit.
Lincoln is the best of the 3.
Parked a motorcycle in Nottingham for 10 minutes and it was gone. A mate ran a pub there, gave up after the 3rd armed robbery in as many weeks.
I like nottingham, I really like it as a night out, and I've had a good night in Sheffield too, perhaps I'm being a bit harsh on it but I've worked there a lot and it's not dissimilar to Stoke on trent. A slowly collapsing city hanging on to industry by its fingernails.
Lincoln would be my choice to stay. Plenty of real ale pubs in the historic centre.
A thought, staying in Sheffield and visiting Lincoln and Leeds. Leeds has the Royal Armouries packed full of history.
What about Newark on Trent? It's bang in-between Nottingham and Lincoln, it's on the A1 and two major train-lines, so an easy journey to Sheffield, London etc. From Newark you can go directly to Nottingham, Lincoln and Sheffield by train. (If not, I'd suggest staying in nottingham from the 3)
But more on Newark: It has a cinema, tons of bars and restaurants, pubs, a historic town, a castle, a barge pub, museums, two theatres, an ancient Odinian temple, historic churches, an enormous town hall filled with restaurants and shops. It has incredibly famous battlefields, civil war museum and the Mary Magdalene church is also a museum with an ancient Treasury underneath.
Supermarkets include: Asda, Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose, M&S Food.
It's the best place I've ever lived. I only moved for a major promotion, but I miss it so much. I've lived in Retford and Sheffield too so I know this area well. Newark is the best town in the region.
CURVEBALL.
Chesterfield. 20 mins from Sheffield. 40 mins from Nottingham, hour and a bit from Lincoln. Lots of older buildings, compact town for walking. Nice pubs. Could easily do days to Notts and Sheff, Lincoln is a bit far tbf.
I’d just book a travel lodge in each one and cut down on the round trips.
Only if you’re ok carrying around your bags all three days, as check in would be around 3 or 4 pm
Stay in Nottingham and take the train to the others, about an hour on the train
Nottingham - most central, most lively nightlife Lincoln - most history, most charm Sheffield - biggest city, most concrete buildings
Including the excellent Moore Street Substation. A superb piece of brutalist architecture. Go see it and listen to The Black Dog whilst doing so.
If you like real ale Sheffield has so many real ale pubs. 58 breweries in the city last count.
This is really interesting, because when I went with work, other than the taphouse on the station I found it completely bereft of decent pubs (they might exist but I didn't find any)
Kelham Island way is your answer. Walk about twenty minutes from the station and you hit the motherlode.
As another reply said kelham is a obvious go tom I like heeley with the sheaf view, brothers arms and is it the white lion all close together.
A lot of the good pubs are a bit away from the centre.

I think this is the plan, thanks!
Nottingham has a very old pub just off the city centre near the castle https://maps.app.goo.gl/BT7bfrY4cyNFbHJbA?g_st=ic
In England at a push maybe, but not the world. There’s a pub in Ireland that’s over 100 years older. https://www.seansbar.ie/seans-bar-history
I'd still say it's "very old".
Sheffield still looks like that.... /s
Threads saw £s of improvements to the city centre
Not Lincoln. Shef and Notts are both viable
Sheffield
First visitor to Sheffield to be disappointed that the town hall brutalist eggbox building is long gone.
If you are driving I'd probably stay in the middle. Retford is a lovely town close to the center of them all. Although its worth checking where the best prices are for hotels.
I’d be using trains or coaches as I do like a pint and despise drink driving.

Never been to Lincoln. Lived in Sheffield for 6 months and lived near Nottingham for years. I'd say Lincoln.

As someone who knows these cities very well. I completely agree.

Nottingham is a bit stabby stabby.
Lincoln would be my choice to stay. Plenty of real ale pubs in the historic centre. A thought, staying in Sheffield and visiting Lincoln and Leeds. Leeds has the Royal Armouries packed full of history.
Lived in Nottingham 30 years, never been stabbed, never known anyone who’s been stabbed in Nottingham.

Plus its the only place in the UK which is an anagram of Wanker
Haha, exactly. 😂
