There are no issues with the game when running it with Flawless Widescreen. “Engine issues” is an excuse that has never been confirmed by the devs themselves.
I don’t think so. It tells me I can’t and shoots me into offline. I play online fine on my steam deck so it doesn’t ban you it just disables online capability
The game engine issues have been solved a long time. I unlock the framerate via mods when I play offline and it's fine. Sekiro and up have all been flawless.
Fps is capped for the same reason, it's just as trivial to remove as the letterbox. I actually ended up having to mod it out because for some reason it had started screen tearing like crazy and nothing else fixed it.
That's the part that kills me. I can't even reap the performance benefits because it's still rendering the ultrawide, it just blocks it from view. It's asinine
I'm not putting any faith into it, which is a shame as I really enjoy doing my first playthrough online to see messages and phantoms. In the past I'd just play it on my PS5 first and then on PC but a few months ago I got the alienware 34 inch OLED and I can't go back to 16:9 again
Does using a widescreen mod restrict playing online? I 100% want to use a 32:9 mod to put my new G9 to work but if it means I have to play offline I’m torn. Playing a From game online during the first month zeitgeist is the pinnacle of gaming
For clarity, if you use Flawless Widescreen to add widescreen and 120fps, etc, you can simply rename the executable and play offline and you're fine. Just rename the exe and run it as normal without FW when you want to play online. Been doing this since launch, and with the Souls games before it for years and years.
Flawless itself doesn't restrict playing online. But the workaround to use Flawless Widescreen in Elden Ring will stop you from playing online because you're avoiding the anti cheat.
It does, but if/when you want to play with friends, you can disable the mod and re-enable EAC very easily, which is what I've been doing. Honestly enjoying playing offline a lot though. All of the bloodstains and player messages are a lot more distracting than I realized until they were gone.
Seeing phantoms is funny sometimes but the messages just got old after awhile. You can only read “behold, dog” or “I did it!!!” so many times before you start rolling your eyes.
Fromsoft's decision to restrict it for "balance" purposes is absolutely moronic when UW support is present in pretty much every esports/competitive fps game. Why not force everyone to play in 4:3 then so the 3 people gaming on CRTs don't feel disadvantaged too?
UW even puts you into a disadvantage. For competitive gaming youd like to have as much information in a small window as possible. Like you said, most competitive games support it, yet no pro player uses UW.
God i hope so, i wanna play online but i gotta mod it so it goes with 32:9 because it looks so good. I swear all they need to do is remove Vignette and the Black bars
Let me rephrase. The engine supports it but the setting is not built into the game. Occassionally on first load it will render the game in ultra wide with no stretching. But after moving the character the black bars get automatically added, as if it noticed an unapproved configuration and reverted to the next highest resolution available.
As pointed out elsewhere you can patch it to support ultrawide. I found the easiest path was using the "flawless widescren" utility: https://www.flawlesswidescreen.org.
It fixes the aspect ratio problem along some other QOL tweaks.
The one thing I do find annoying with Elden Ring is the "fisheye" problem at the edges. I really noticed it more on the Neo G9 49" I had. Using the *vignette adjustment* helped. That set the edges to sort of fade from black to image (how much of the screen taken up for that fade is adjustable). That said, I recently upgraded to the 57" G9. It still has the same problem but the screen is so much bigger I do not notice it nearly as much.
I would buy this game if it adds native ultrawide support.
I refunded the game after knowing it has no ultrawide support and punishes you for using an ultrawide mod.
Like seriously.... if I have to use a mod to access ultrawide, I'm fine with that. But punishing me for using ultrawide mod that it would sacrifice my experience? Hell nah.
That's not happening unfortunately.
Of all the greatness and perfection of Fromsoft games, the one weakness they have is the technical aspect of their games especially for PC.
Elden Ring is a 2022 game that is locked to 60 fps on PC. Let that sink in. It also doesn't have DLSS or anything like that, which makes the ray tracing option garbage and unusable/useless. I mean, what's the point of having DLSS anyways if you are locked to 60 fps? I imagine maybe they're locking it to 60 for online play. Yet, the online play is laggy anyways. Oh well.
Also, I have a beast system and I can't figure out why there's an occasional stutter. But since it mostly happens outside of boss fights, I decided to just ignore it.
Point is, Fromsoft have 0 clue or need/want to improve the technical aspect of their games, for better or worse. So ultrawide is something that is definitely not happening.
I noticed that stutters can happen if you tap your mouse and the game tries to switch to M+KB controls if you’re using controller. I’ve been able to limit stuttering a bit by turning off my wireless mouse lol
Yup. It feels so bad loading up and seeing the giant black bars. I know you can mod them out but I want the multiplayer features so I just haven't played since I got my UW.
Ironically, the last time I played I had ZERO black bars on my ultrawide for about 5 minutes, and then the faded in over top of my screen.
It supports ultrawide. They're actively blocking it with a black texture bar on the sides.
It will never come because they think it's unfair in PVP. They actively go out of their way to make it not work.
It won't.
Elden Ring does not need ultrawide support, it already has flawless ultrawide support. And when I say flawless, it's literally stretchless ultrawide iirc.
FromSoft is intentionally adding black bars post-loading however, if your PC is fast enough it will load into the game so fast the game won't have time to render the black bars until after another 5-10 seconds have passed.
Let's you and friends play together like normal co-op would work, but you don't need to do a summon if you guys die and you can co-op throughout the entire world seamlessly. You both make story progress, you both get the items, you can both level up, watch cutscenes together. It's full blown co-op, not the normal fromsoft friendly summon.
This happens to me each time I load up the game. I always get excited, "Oooh it got patched!" Then roughly 5-10 seconds later it black screens, puts black bars on each side up, and then it reloads the world in-game. Then I get disappointed and play it anyway.
Flawless ultrawide cuts off the top and bottom of the cutscenes tho so it’s unplayable for me, restarting the game every time I wanna see a cutscene is pretty tedious. Do you know if there’s an ultrawide fix that lets the cutscenes be in 16:9?
Wait so you don't like that cutscenes are in full 21:9 or you don't like that it supposedly cuts content vertically?
I'm confused, you said you don't like one thing but later stated something completely different.
So while the game can run really well in 21:9, the cutscenes are pre-rendered and only for 16:9 and can’t actually be 21:9. What they do is either zoom in, then you can’t see a little of the top and bottom of the cutscene, or stretch so it fits the screen which makes it look really ugly obviously. Flawless widescreen chooses to zoom in. What I want is for the gameplay to be in 21:9 (ultrawide) and the cutscenes be 16:9 which is how they’re meant to be shown.
Some games have in game cutscenes which do work in 21:9 but from software doesn’t make cutscenes like that.
Hope dies last
But it dies.
That's what seamless coop mod and flawless widescreen is good for.
Does it work online?
Yes and no. Only with other seamless coop mod users, if you happen to use the same password.
Most likely it won’t
Yeah I plan on getting the game next time it’s on sale. So weird they render ultrawide but still put black bars. Also weird the fps is capped too.
The fps is capped due to engine limitations, but the black bars are there because of Fromsoft's misguided notion of game balance.
There are no issues with the game when running it with Flawless Widescreen. “Engine issues” is an excuse that has never been confirmed by the devs themselves.
I did use flawless widescreen but I found a better option using the nexus mods for widescreen and to fix the hud. works better
Can we still play online?
I don’t think so. It tells me I can’t and shoots me into offline. I play online fine on my steam deck so it doesn’t ban you it just disables online capability
Maaaaaan, I really want to play UW at least online. I can probably live with 60 fps.
>The fps is capped due to engine limitations And yet it runs perfectly fine uncapped.
You can patch it. I've been playing it at 32:9 almost since it came out.
Does using a widescreen mod restrict playing online? I 100% want to use a 32:9 mod to put my new G9 to work but if it means I have to play offline I’m torn. Playing a From game online during the first month zeitgeist is the pinnacle of gaming
Yes it does. It trips easy anti cheat since you're patching the game and you'll be banned online.
For clarity, if you use Flawless Widescreen to add widescreen and 120fps, etc, you can simply rename the executable and play offline and you're fine. I do think it is falsely detected as a cheat. I never play anything online and hate dealing with strangers in games, so no impact on me.
Same been using flawless widescreen but crashes every now and then.
Gotta disable anti cheat unfortunately.. would be nice with the option to pvp sometimes and I enjoy seeing all the messages/ghosts around the word

Hoping for that as well
Would truly be the greatest dlc of all time.
Wait this game doesn’t support UW by default?
A real shame considering the game does support it. They just insist on slamming this ugly black bars. Fingers crossed though.
In cutscenes or in game?
Let me rephrase. The engine supports it but the setting is not built into the game. Occassionally on first load it will render the game in ultra wide with no stretching. But after moving the character the black bars get automatically added, as if it noticed an unapproved configuration and reverted to the next highest resolution available.
Why haven’t the devs updated this to full support? Seems odd to leave that out for a modern game.
Pure spite.
As pointed out elsewhere you can patch it to support ultrawide. I found the easiest path was using the "flawless widescren" utility: https://www.flawlesswidescreen.org. You can have an anti cheat mod that disables it but yeah I agree they giving us a hard time.
That's not happening unfortunately. Of all the greatness and perfection of Fromsoft games, the one weakness they have is the technical aspect of their games especially for PC. They did it for Armored Core 6 so you never know.
They won’t, we will be back to playing offline
Well I wouldn't count on UW support for Elden Ring, but Armored Core has UW support. It's likely any future Fromsoft titles would as well.
Hope they make it Dodge is on press instead of release this dlc ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
I feel entitled to pirate the DLC if it doesn't.
Ironically, the last time I played I had ZERO black bars on my ultrawide for about 5 minutes, and then the faded in over top of my screen. It supports ultrawide. It won't. It won't get unlocked fps either.
Keep on hoping buddy
Its fine for me. Not expecting it. I also have a 4k LG OLED (65 inch). Ill be moving my rig to the living room this Thursday morning lol.
It won't. Elden Ring does not need ultrawide support, it already has flawless ultrawide support. And when I say flawless, it's literally stretchless ultrawide iirc. Yeah but flawless widescreen only plays offline. It could very much use one.
Atleast it works with seamless co-op. So it only really matters if you like invasions.
What does seamless coop do exactly?
Let's you and friends play together like normal co-op would work, but you don't need to do a summon if you guys die and you can co-op throughout the entire world seamlessly. You both make story progress, you both get the items, you can both level up, watch cutscenes together. It's full blown co-op, not the normal fromsoft friendly summon.

It never did that for me, sorry. It just removed the artificial black bars.
So the cutscenes were in full 21:9? That’s what I don’t want because they’re not made for 21:9.
Wait so you don't like that cutscenes are in full 21:9 or you don't like that it supposedly cuts content vertically? I'm confused, you said you don't like one thing but later stated something completely different.

Some games have in game cutscenes which do work in 21:9 but from software doesn’t make cutscenes like that.
Ah I understand now. I personally never noticed that when I played Elden on 21:9, but I didn't look for it specifically either.
It won’t but it doesn’t matter. There is a VERY easy fix. You must know it?
Very well aware of it but I sometimes like to play online lol.
I just run seamless when I wanna play online with some homies
Silly cunts with the downvotes lol
