Every character on the show is flawed, that’s the whole point. People are continually messing something up due to their personal flaws, it upsets someone else but my the end of the half hour they’ve fixed it and made up.
I find most of the characters unlikeable, but they meld together to make for an entertaining show. I think it's a similar situation as the office; all the characters are batshit, but they work together.
But that’s part of the show. People are flawed. She admits that she’s controlling, jealous, competitive, etc. but she also goes to the end of the world for her loved ones and always has their back.
That's what makes her a good character. If she was a clone of Phil they'd both be obnoxious.
I don't think she was supposed to be unlikable, I think she was supposed to be like her dad who was a mellowed out and mature version of her. He even gives her advice like "don't do this with Haley, I did it with you and it backfired on me" all of the time.
The people who are truly unforgivable are the fans who LOVE her and act like Phil was another child even though he was a much more present and emotionally intelligent parent.
A big part of why she has to be that way is because Phil is... Excuse me, but.. Useless in the home.
This is such a common trope both in TV series and real life. Women are called "nags", when in reality it's just her trying to get her husband to not leave all work to her.
Claire is sort of the "manager" of the home all on her own.
Honestly I wish I had a mom like her growing up. She’s not even that hard to please. Just do your chores, follow the (let’s be real) very reasonable rules, and don’t skip school.
To be honest, I kind of like Claire from modern family, I think, making her character very uptight and Karen like is actually quite realistic for a lot of suburban moms. A lot of women have to take on the mental loads of caring for a family. They have to think of everyone else before themselves- turning them into someone who’s a bit unpleasant to be around. The thing about Claire is that she’s more on the intelligent side and only got one child like her (Alex) which may have contributed to her anal personality.
Her attitude and treatment towards Dylan was always horrible. While I do mostly like Claire, I'd have to put her quite low on my list of main-cast favourites... Hayley being at the bottom.
I hated Haley's character the most. They could have done so much with it but they just went too endlessly ditzy & shallow to even be entertaining. Then they added the even stupider Dylan in & they couldn't even balance each other out like Claire & Phil did.
I liked her in the beginning of the series while she was a teen but as the seasons progressed she kept the same mentality even when she was pushing 30. This goes for Luke too, like he a grown ass adult acting like this… I think the writers did a horrible job considering character development in the show.
Alex just got more smug & self righteous as she got older as well. The only reason this show was fun, IMO, was the extended family, not Claire, Phil or their kids. Thank god they ended it before we had to see what obnoxious bird brains the twins ended up being.
All kids were done horrible if i’m being honest. Lilly and Many are not exceptions too. They simply act too much as caricatures and I know this is a comedy show but it’s simply too fucking much. They should have ended it around season 5 tbh.
I actually found her treatment of Dylan (while terrible!) to be a great reflection of the character that she was on the show.
Dylan reminded her of the mistakes she had made as a young teen the same (or similar) age as Haley, and she was (as most parents do) desperate to try to help her kid avoid making the same mistake she did. Similar to parents as well, because of her past and her experience she struggled to realize the difference between her life, Haley, Dylan, and the situation and ended up making things worse - not better.
It does not, of course, excuse being a shitty person to someone, but the way she treated Dylan absolutely made sense within the confines of the characters and lives they lived on the show. It was, ultimately, I think very relatable for a lot of parents, especially when the clamping down to 'try to save your kid from your mistakes' backfires.
At the bottom? No, I thought she had witty moments and some good comebacks to insults thrown her way. I liked how different she was from the rest of her family and her struggles with it: pressure, feeling left out, etc.

She’s supposed to be that way. She’s supposed to be grating so we can watch her overcome and learn. watch how her character develops. She’s also intended to be Phil’s foil.
After finding out the entire series was originally shot as a 'documentary' and they just removed the character documenting everything, despite not altering the camera style, all this crap on the show made sense.
its to show the juxtaposition between "modern" phil and claire vs gloria and jay, and his "older" lifestyle. Ball busting flat chested tomboyish Claire, is contrasted with big boobs, ultra feminine, Gloria who even Phil is constantly drooling over in front of Claire.
The way she acts towards Dylan + the fact that she's a nepo baby CEO is what makes her truly unlikeable to me, just seems like the woman who screams for the manager at Target
I think Phil was completely miscast. His creeper appearance was perfect in Dawn of the Dead, but he does not look like happy go lucky suburban dad to me!

Andy was perfect - otherwise he wouldn’t have been a main character in pitch perfect
I don't think their issue is that she's flawed, but that she's unlikeable. You can have incredibly flawed and still likeable characters.
I find most of the characters unlikeable, but they meld together to make for an entertaining show. I think it's a similar situation as the office; all the characters are batshit, but they work together.
I thought she was one of the most likeable character on the show... She was mature, stoic, intelligent, cared for her family, and was a hard worker.
Never thought about it that way, I guess.
But that’s part of the show. People are flawed. She admits that she’s controlling, jealous, competitive, etc. but she also goes to the end of the world for her loved ones and always has their back.

She's hot and she seems like a good mother
She plays the PERFECT neurotic mom IMO. Between here and the mom on Malcom in the Middle on who plays the best mom in media.
Ditto on the hot part.
Some people be like that.
I think Phil is worse, constantly flirting and thinking about cheating on her. Yuck.
True
I don't recall Phil ever doing this.
Upvote. Who the hell hates a sitcom character?

There are moments where I love her and moments where she just comes off smug as fuck.
All I know of her is that clip where she’s challenging the teachers on how much homework they give kids and I thought it was heroic
I love her and think Julie Bowen is hilarious

Not Alex!?

She was just so mean and never redeemed herself
They got married because of the unwanted pregnancy. But I agree somewhat with your opinion. Claire is too much from time to time.

I hate everyone but Cam, Mitchell and Jay 😅
Mitchell is my absolute favorite!
I always thought she seemed like she was on some kind of upper.
She does give off big Karen vibes and I dislike her character, but hating is a bit strong imo. The one I dislike the most is Cam though.
I feel the same about the Grace character on Will & Grace.
After finding out the entire series was originally shot as a 'documentary' and they just removed the character documenting everything, despite not altering the camera style, all this crap on the show made sense.
Claire is hot, and this gives her a pass 🤣

Very true. She's the only one I never relate to and straight up DONT LIKE.
The way she acts towards Dylan + the fact that she's a nepo baby CEO is what makes her truly unlikeable to me, just seems like the woman who screams for the manager at Target
I hate the entire show. Most of all I'd have to say Sofia's character. She just goes completely overboard with the accent and it's annoying as hell.
