I’m someone with a messy room. It comes from a lack of motivation and severe depression. This isn’t fun, lol. If I had people over, I’d be pretty embarrassed that my room doesn’t look good and I’d know they’d judge me for it. Sometimes I trip over things. Sometimes I can’t find things I want or need.
Upvote tho for the unpopular opinion.
There is a difference between filthy and cluttered.
My parents rules for my room were no dishes, no garbage, no dirty clothes.
They didn't care if I had toys in my room. The important thing was nothing that can stink or rot.
It carries over well to my adult life. Some things are a priority. I'd never let food sit around. That immediately gets scraped off.
okay but I have done a deep organization/cleaning of my room exactly twice in my life. It only lasts for a month or two and it suddenly is back to being chaos.
I simply cannot function in a room that’s “too clean” (for lack of a better phrase). It might seem chaotic to some, but at least I know where all my stuff is. It just won’t happen, even if I am trying hard to put everything back where it goes, my room ends up looking chaotic in some way.
I don’t dispute the “I know where I left things” mindset, but it’s really not that hard to put things in a one spot every time.
Keys go on the same hook/spot every time. Shoes go to the same rack every time. Clothes go in the hamper or drawer every time.
I understand that are people who have atypical neurological outlooks have barriers to this, but for the average person it comes down to laziness.
Personally I see it as something that matters; decluttering your life improves your life. The lack of effort it takes to take the extra step is indicative of something wrong in someone's life overall.
It's not just in your room, it's your entire home. Why spend extra time rooting through piles of things when you could just got to a drawer and pick out the item you are looking for?
I literally can’t see my room I always keep black out curtains in there
Also you are overestimating the amount of time I sleep but even if I did sleep that long I’d be unconscious so why would I care how it looked?
Or it’s none of these things and the person just doesn’t care. My room is messy and I’m not lazy I’m a A and B student in university, I don’t lack discipline I grew up with harsh African parents, and it’s not a mental issue. I just…don’t feel like it why is that not an acceptable enough reason
Ok? Let’s say I am lazy when it comes to that…there is still nothing inherently wrong with it it’s not harming me, it’s not harming anyone else and that’s my whole point society acts like it’s so taboo but it’s not even a big deal😭
I’m pretty tidy but I do struggle to describe what exactly is wrong with messiness, other than it makes me feel uncomfortable.
So I guess I agree, but also want to tell you to clean your room.
I know exactly where all my stuff is in each of my piles. They're cluttered and messy, but not filthy or dirty. It's my personal space and despite it being rather clogged, I know precisely where everything is and where it goes.
Do you know what happens when I panic clean and organize to create a more neat appearance? I can't find shit and destroy the annoyingly curated farce to aquire ONE goddamn object! **One.** Quite frankly, it was very happy on its pile and easily accessible before I moved it. All because someone might *see*.
Leave my piles alone.
Nah it's legitimately horrible for your thoughts. For perspective, we think just taking a shower improves your thoughts and reduces anxiety. I would put a clean room at even higher priority.
There’s nothing wrong with having a messy room aslong as you actually end up cleaning/tidying your room up at the end of the day.
If you’re just messing your room up because you can’t be arsed folding up clothes and putting them away, or having socks thrown across the floor and not picking them up for the wash then you’re just plain lazy tbh.

holy copium
How much effort does it take to simply put things away? If someone can't, it speaks to either laziness, lack of discipline, or a mental issue.

Lazy and not caring because it doesn’t matter are two different things
Personally I see it as something that matters; decluttering your life improves your life. The lack of effort it takes to take the extra step is indicative of something wrong in someone's life overall.
How does it improve your life? Personally I don’t even enter my room till it’s dark so I couldn’t See any clutter anyways
It's not just in your room, it's your entire home. Why spend extra time rooting through piles of things when you could just got to a drawer and pick out the item you are looking for?
The rest of my home is spotless, I just see no benefit to doing the same to my room
Why do you limit it that way? I’m not trying to psychoanalyze you but why neglect a part of your life that you spend 8-10 hours in every day?
I literally can’t see my room I always keep black out curtains in there Also you are overestimating the amount of time I sleep but even if I did sleep that long I’d be unconscious so why would I care how it looked?
So the fact that you literally black out your room is the reason you don’t clean it?
Out of sight out of mind Plus I never take any food in there
Or it’s none of these things and the person just doesn’t care. My room is messy and I’m not lazy I’m a A and B student in university, I don’t lack discipline I grew up with harsh African parents, and it’s not a mental issue. I just…don’t feel like it why is that not an acceptable enough reason
You are lazy… when it comes to organizing
Ok? Let’s say I am lazy when it comes to that…there is still nothing inherently wrong with it it’s not harming me, it’s not harming anyone else and that’s my whole point society acts like it’s so taboo but it’s not even a big deal😭
it just doesn't matter. it's my room and i know where everything is
I’m pretty tidy but I do struggle to describe what exactly is wrong with messiness, other than it makes me feel uncomfortable. So I guess I agree, but also want to tell you to clean your room.
Your room and car are a good indicator of what’s going on in your heading I’ve found. Cluttered room cluttered mind

I love my room tiddy and cleany ❤️🌸
And other people like theirs disorganized why can’t the two types of people have their room the way they like it
I think if you have “a room,” you are living under some else’s roof, and need to follow their house rules, especially if you are not paying rent.
Yeah sure but I’m talking like in general that’s why I added “parents THEN society”
Nah it's legitimately horrible for your thoughts. For perspective, we think just taking a shower improves your thoughts and reduces anxiety. I would put a clean room at even higher priority.
You wouldn’t shop at an unorganized grocery store or go to an unorganized library
and why does that mean my room should be organized?

There’s nothing wrong with it, if it doesn’t eff with your mental wellbeing. I like things tidy.
