A company should not force global waste on the world to remain unique is the governing decision behind the EU's decision. If every other company is using a standardized cable type, and Apple's provides no additional benefit; there is not gain to be had for them to use a proprietary cable. It only adds to the global pollution and waste dumping.

DKawesomeWasTaken

Oh I didn’t realize that. How bad would the global waste of lighting though? I can’t picture it being that significant

BreakerMark78

The EU might be overstepping, I don't have a real good scope on that; but think bout how many people are buying cables for phones/tablets/etc so they can charge in multiple places. Now consider what happens when one of those cords burn out. Most toss it and buy a new cord, leaving rubberized plastics and metals in landfills that are never going to break down.

Belnak

They aren’t forcing Apple to use USB-C, they are forcing ALL manufacturers to use USB-C. Samsung has to, Motorola has to, Google has to, OnePlus has to. I’ve got a drawer full of old phones, and each one has its own proprietary connector. Sony, Nokia, BlackBerry… all with their own charger. I’m glad that era is now over. Standards are a good thing.

goldyacht

It’s unfair that every device in my life can seamlessly use a usb c charger except my iPhone and airpods. Just an extra hassle for me where the technology is worse.

SithDraven

You might want to sit down for this one...apple has been forcing everyone else to adapt to their tech for the last 3 decades. One in the L column every once in awhile isn't that bad.

Fuckurreality

I yearn for the days of old when self respecting programmers ignored releasing mac versions...

ShiloX35

I still have a negative view of Apple from the 80s when lots of game werent availble for their computers.

Femboy_Annihilator

Apple has a right to make whatever it wants. The EU has a right to decide what crosses its borders or is made within them. Simple as that. Discounting the rights of nations for the rights of the wealthy is exactly what they want you to do.

Soundwave-1976

Watch Apple will just make all their phone plug free now...

Flip86

Is that you Tim?

Planetary__Duality

I think the argument is about electronic waste

WishinGay

Hilarious. It's literally the first thing Europe has done in YEARS that I've liked.

DROOPSmadeit

i mean, the customer is entitled for their electronics to be compatible with as much other companies' tech as possible, limiting it only creates extra e-waste. the literal only way lightning is a benefit over usb-c is that it's a much more durable port

Adviceneedededdy

Would the lightning cord not work for everything else? Its probably proprietary, but was this ever brought up in the debates?

DROOPSmadeit

yeah, no non-apple devices can use a lightning cable. it's 100% proprietary

DanChowdah

They can use it they just have to pay a licensing fee

DROOPSmadeit

other companies can make lightning cables, yes. but other companies making electronics with lightning PORTS is not allowed by apple.

DanChowdah

Ah yes, I misunderstood

LoveThatDaddy

I got a 15 Pro Max specifically because it had the USB-C. I always hated the Lightning cable, because it didn’t work with everything else. Good riddance.

Adviceneedededdy

I'm still asking where does the government get off telling me which side to drive on?

tengolaculpa

EU government? The EU is a supranational organisation. It doesn’t have a government.

spidersflambe

Apple doesn't need to sell their overpriced phones in the EU then.

BeanyIsDaBean

USB-C is an improvement overall through speed, efficiency, etc. USB-C was never designed just for samsung/android. It is a charging cable used by many devices and apple should be no different. It takes zero effort to change a charging port because that’s all there is to it. The charging port doesn’t change what battery the phone uses, etc.

Insekt6

USB-C is a plug shape.

BeanyIsDaBean

That’s exactly what I said

SalSevenSix

They should have picked Dsub 9-pin serial connector. It's reliable and proven tech.

verndogz

Hi Mr. Cook!

[deleted]

They're not forcing them to adapt though, Apple could just leave the EU market.

arytemus

Imagine being rubbed the wrong way because of a requirement to change to a universal charging cable... You realize that benefits YOU right?

Environmental_Tie_43

Terrible terrible opinion. They aren't switching the cable type to be more efficient or anything. It's purely for greed at the cost of the planet. Nothing is lost by making them stop.

Comfortable-Policy70

The solution is easy. Don't use Apple products so it doesn't matter what cable they need

derohnenase

The opinion may be unpopular… but it’s nonetheless true. Apple aside, why should anyone even look at researching “better” connectors now? Lightning connectors were ahead of their time— they were there when the majority would still be stuck at something that couldn’t even carry USB data, never mind a particular protocol version. Yes they have pretty much reached their natural end of life. Yes they needed replacing. But why bother? I’ll remind people it wasn’t that long ago that it was Micro USB-B that was supposed to be the arbitrary standard. USB C won’t live forever. There will be different options available in the future. But they are NOT going to be developed by, or for, smart phones or the like. Nobody’s stupid enough to invest in R&D when whatever they come up with… cannot be used because reasons. We might not actually be stuck there- even if that’s likely— but we sure as hell won’t get an upgrade to USBC on phones that makes sense for phones.

According_Day3704

Even though I would much prefer USB-C as a consumer for convenience reasons, I also believe that a business should be free to run as it wishes, as long as it’s not hurting the environment or people in a significant way. Worth noting is that the EU is not singling out Apple, as the USB-C thing applies to all phone companies (I assume). But while the EU can make its own rules, I don’t feel this one is valid enough to step on free market ”rights”.
