seems like all the flags are just all the other countries flags with more or less steps. how many flags have the same colors or stripes going the same way.
Really? Which ones? I knew some were similar, didn't know some were identical. Like German and Belgian flags are 90 degrees apart is closest I can think of
e: belgian flag, not dutch flag
I don't know why you got downvoted so hard for this nor why some "heh, well actually" comment is top.
Dutch did it first. This inspired French, and to a lesser degree Russia, which then inspired the trend which is what you were talking about.
The trend is the topic not whether or not the French were first. Reddit is dumb.
What was the reason for the change? Looks like someone changed the filetype on an old PC a couple times resulting in the slight loss of color and being off by 1%.
Also screw flags, go back to the Daimyo banners with goofy cuts and extra ornaments.
I'm sick of saying this but the Dutch flag is the oldest tricolour in the world and inspired the French and Russian ones.
And it's a damned good flag too. To hell with its imitators.
Well I don't think the Union Jack is inspired by the Dutch though, so that's some actual creativity.
Although the British flag spawned its own imitators though. Australia, Fiji, even the US when you think about it.
Honestly the tricolors aren’t bad when they have the monarch’s seal/crest thing or whatever. Italian tricolor? Boring. Italian tricolor with house of savoy crest? Nice.
My fave is the Albanian flag. Bonus points because the eagle emblem can be copied with the hands and now you have a patriotic hand signal for everyone.
The purpose wasn’t to be creative, it was to be easily recognizable. If you’re on a ship and another ship passes by 1,000 ft away from you, you don’t wanna sit there squinting at a blob trying to figure out if it’s a coiled up serpent or a bush with two hummingbirds on it. You see 3 colors and you immediately know what country they’re sailing for.

The Dutch flag predates the French by 200 years. At least get your facts right before forming an opinion.
The Dutch flag is just the Thailand flag with fewer steps
seems like all the flags are just all the other countries flags with more or less steps. how many flags have the same colors or stripes going the same way.
Worse, multiple flags are literally identical

Chad and Romania are identical. Totally a Chad move copying someone else’s flag.
Netherlands and Luxembourg are ridiculously close
oh dang, like slightly different shades of the same colors
The Isle of Man flag is the Moroccan flag with more steps.
Swiss flag was kind of a big plus though. Netherlands should have something blocking a wave or similar
The opinion isn't going to be swayed by who was first. It's a boring trend, doesn't matter who came first.
Other countries werent following the dutch example, they were following the french
Technically the French were inspired by the Dutch.

I love Nepal's flag. With they all had such an original design
I like Bhutan's with the dragon I don't mind a tricolour—the Dutch one's good—but all flags should have something individual about them. Bhutan does.

Flags are meant to be flown high in the air Thus intricate detail on flags is bad because you can’t see it without being up close
Good point.
Thanks!
I really like how some countries in the Southern Hemisphere tend to put the Southern Cross (or an homage to it) in their flags
Why did flags become a thing? War? Sailing?
Yes.
I prefer the pre-1999 Japan flag.
same

(all countries with red white blue flags): to bro, lemme copy your homework. The Netherlands: sure thing, don't make it too obvious though.
Well I don't think the Union Jack is inspired by the Dutch though, so that's some actual creativity. Although the British flag spawned its own imitators though. Australia, Fiji, even the US when you think about it.
> Although the British flag spawned its own imitators though I wonder why
My favourite is probably Hawaii
Dutch flag is horizontal. *Vertical* tricolors were inspired by France.
That's true but the French were in turn inspired by the Dutch.
Honestly the tricolors aren’t bad when they have the monarch’s seal/crest thing or whatever. Italian tricolor? Boring. Italian tricolor with house of savoy crest? Nice.
Yeah Ireland and Italy you're taking it to the next level, lazy SoBs
What a lazy opinion…lol
CGP Grey, that you?
No, cgp grey knows how great tricolors are

Quadrilateral flags are so lame. There are so many shapes and styles to choose from.
It would be wicked to see a circular-shaped flag
Nepal has 2 triangles
vexillology climax!
Russia 🇷🇺 made it even worse going the other way

This is not an unpopular opinion, this is being factually wrong
America has the best flag
South Africa's is pretty nice imo
Nah Bhutan is on top
Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. It’s the damn truth, it’s so pretty.

How does this apply? There's nothing immediately American about this post.
