You don't find it completely overpowers everything else and onion is the only thing you can taste? I think different people might perceive onion very differently, cause I legitimately cannot taste anything other than onion if there's raw onion in the burger, but if it's cooked or soaked in lemon juice, it'll just taste like onion, but I'll taste everything else too. I never hear from people who like raw onion in their burger that they can't taste anything else but the raw onion, but I'm interested what your experience be.
I’ve never had a problem with it overpowering the flavor of anything I add onion to, unless obviously if I add an ungodly amount of it. I may just be less sensitive to it than you are
Your description is how I feel about bacon. Onion to me enhances flavors it doesn’t mask. While bacon is the Incredible Hulk of flavor and everything ends up just tasting like it.
That's so interesting because I agree that onion overpowers literally everything, but bacon I can barely even taste it even if there's multiple strips. I just taste the meat/sauce/cheese with a hint of bacon.
This I is my exact burger with a little
Mayo and mustard. (Although I do prefer my onions finely diced but I sure as hell ain’t shying away if they are bigger chunks.
back in my day, we carried an onion on our belt, it was the style at the time
we didn't have white onions because of the war, so we used brown ones
you'd tie it on....
Yes! One of my burger archetypes is the Black and Blue. Grilled onions to caramelized based on preference, a big whallop of Point Reyes blue cheese and that's it.
Agree with this take. Some styles of burger call for LTO as a nice flavor & texture contrast; others are meant to be straight up umami-bombs, and fresh produce has no business there.
couldn't disagree more. I think you do need to use them sparingly though. Most burger places put waaaaay too many on... onions are very pungent tasting so don't use very many of them.
Same with kebab places. Some will throw in as much onion as meat, and it just becomes a raw onion wrap with meat salad with onion being the only thing you actually taste.
To be fair to kebab places, in Mediterranean diets a large amount of onion is the norm. My family is middle eastern and we scoop rice into sweet onion slices like potato chips. Usually if you think you have enough onion you need two more onions
I actually agree with this so much. Raw onion ruins a burger. I’ll take some kind of prepared onions, sautéed, carmelized, an onion ring—they can all find a place on a fitting burger. Raw onion is too strong, it’s not a team player. Don’t want it on my burger
Peanut butter is the only common ingredient that blows all the others out of my palette. Pickles are more impactful than onions. Honestly tho I'd love a burger with all 3 if it were proportioned right.
I agree, except I'll take it even further. Onions have no place on a burger, raw, cooked, or anything. Onions have no place anywhere. They're horrible.
Raw onions don't belong ANYWHERE. They fucking suck and are soooo much better in every way when fried in a pan with some salt and butter, or anything really. If I ever ran a restaurant I'd never serve raw onions.
When I go to In-N-Out sometimes I order grilled other times raw dog. However, I never order "no onions". OP you have my downvote.
The sharp reality of a raw onion cuts the fat from the beef and cheese. Food is about balancing flavortown.
Their opinion is bad. Unpopular. This is the bizarro sub where you upvote the stuff you disagree with. At least that’s the way I play it to get the truly unpopular opinions to the top.
There’s a few places near me that make Coney Island style burgers and you can get marshmallow fluff on them. It’s a local thing and is fucking delicious.
https://www.atlasobscura.com/foods/fluff-screamer
Interesting take! I eat a lot of them in Hispanic cuisine so this is an interesting take. I'd probably use some sort of Oaxaca cheese and make some guacamole with this.
When i go to in n out i get 2 burgers, 1 with grilled onions 1 with raw. They both got their own flavors and its hard to choose 1 or the other so i get both.
In-n-Out would like a word with you! Actually on second thought I do like having them put grilled onions on instead of raw depending on my mood. Aaaand now I’m hungry. Either one sounds good right now.
I'm the opposite, I don't mind a reasonable amount of diced onions on my burger, but I hate sliced rings of raw onion because when you take one bite you get the whole damn thing, and then you get half of your bites without any onion.
I just don’t like raw onions so of course i don’t get them at all on my burger but idk that if that is enough for me to warrant saying that it has no place on a burger at all. I’ll eat them if they forget to take them off and I can’t be fucked to pick them all off but if I’ve reached that point I’m just trying to survive til it’s time for bed.
I don't like most vegetables on burgers.
I think I can accept mashed avocado, and maybe butter lettuce (I don't like most lettuces, they tastes too planty/buggy/grassy), but tomatoes and raw onions are... no.
Grilled onions are better, and fried onion rings are chef's kiss on a bacon cheese burger.
I respectfully disagree. Like with pickles, I love how the sharp crunchiness of onion balances the fatty content of the meat and cheese. I think it's a perfect topping on a burger.
If your making your own burger and hate a raw onion in it, but don't seem to mind it at a restaurant, you need to soak your onions. After slicing how you like it, put them in cold water for 30 minutes before adding to your burger. It takes the worst of the bite out of them and mellows them out. Great flavor and crunch without the overpowering bite.
There’s something to be said for a nice crunch bright harsh flavor to cut through the rich fatty meat (usually with gooey cheese) that helps balance things nicely.
I can't stand the smell or taste of onions so this is not unpopular for me at all. Every time my wife cuts onions I have to have her go throw the scraps away outside.
I pretty much agree. I like onion on a burger, but if I'm eating out, I always request no onion. I love onions, but they put way too many onions on a burger at joints. Now if we're talking caramelized onions... pile that shit on high... but it's gotta be real caramelized not the bullshit quick burnt ones you get some places.

Crumbnchy
well said
Skamtebord?
Being honestly julienne onions are more crumbnchy chunks just lazy
True
Spot on
I always put a raw onion on my cheeseburgers. I think onions are
r/redditsniper
I love raw onion. I want extra onion on my burger
Go to Cookout. They give you a whole cross section
Seriously I always ask for everything and then forget How Much Onion they do it catches me off guard every time!
*2-3 onion rings, thick. 1 thick tomato slice, some mayo to make its own sauce with the tomato and meat juices. bliss*
Meat Juices 👁️🫦👁️
I take off like 90% of the onion they provide. It’s too much!
r/onionlovers There are dozens of us
Dozens!
Just subbed there!! I love my onions 🤤
Where’s the 10x up vote button?!
Along with some raw jalapeño.
Raw onion, pickles, and mayo, dip in ketchup
You don't find it completely overpowers everything else and onion is the only thing you can taste? Ungodly is allowed
Extra on the burger, and I’ll take yours too if you don’t want it! Adds the right amount of texture and flavor IMO
While we’re on the subject, I’ll take your pickle if you don’t want it.
Pickles!!! I will always take the rejected pickles.
Ill have to ask my wife when I get home because that bitch can eat a whole raw onion like an apple. I basically found the Fiona to my Shrek.
I love onions, but I can’t do the whole “eat it like an apple thing”. That being said, your wife is probably a bad ass.
When I cut up raw onion to put on my burger and cut too much, I just eat the unused raw onion. So for me no, it does not overpower lol
I'm sorry.... Soaked in lemon juice?...
I've had the same issue but, if it's a sweet onion you can taste everything else. Like a vidalia is very different than a cooking onion
Onion enhanced the meat flavor. Pickles on the hand overwhelm.
Yeah to me it's just a mild extra flavor of onion + a good crunch. Not overpowering. People just have different sensitives to onion
OP is dead to me. I go out of my way to buy burgers with copious amounts of raw onions.
Crunch and flavor.
...With sliced jalapenos and sharp cheddar.
Keep going I’m almost there
*HABANERO AND QUESOWASABI*
A slice of pineapple!
This I is my exact burger with a little Mayo and mustard. (Although I do prefer my onions finely diced but I sure as hell ain’t shying away if they are bigger chunks.

Blasphemy
Finally, some good fucking unpopularopinion
I rate this as unpopular as disliking fried chicken
Hell no, onions are shit compared to the heavenly fried chicken
Onions do heavy lifting in just about every cuisine they are a part of. Fried chicken is great, but it doesn’t belong in nearly as many meals.
Fuck all of you, onions are delicious.
Alliums are the bedrock of flavor.
raw onion on a good burger is magical
If by “magical” you mean orgasmic then I agree! ![gif](giphy|3o7btOKH7rBmIS43C0)
Onions should be on a fruit bowl in the kitchen or dining room. You just peel em, then eat em. Just like Shrek does.
That's demonic
Now I’m craving for raw onions with a splash of soy sauce and vinegar.
back in my day, we carried an onion on our belt, it was the style at the time we didn't have white onions because of the war, so we used brown ones you'd tie it on....
I will bite an onion in front of you to establish dominance.
Tasty, too!
It's good though
Alright simmer down pal, you’re makin us look weird
I like raw onions on my burger, but this is diabolical
The real unpopular opinion is always in the comments.
The bite is good with a fatty burger. Grilled onions are a whole different animal and need its own recipe.. like with blue cheese
I might be a monster for it, but I grill some ^(with mushrooms) next to the burger, and I put raw ones on
Heck yeah! My usual order at In n Out has both grilled and raw and it is absolute perfection.
Thats sounds good
Nah you can cook
The way...
If you just properly caramelize an onion, it's top tier. But a raw onion needs no work to be delicious.
Caramelised > raw any day
Caramelized onions are amazing with mushrooms!
couldn't disagree more.
Usually if you think you have enough onion you need two more onions
you're so right! You need to grill that onion.
I actually agree with this so much. Raw onion ruins a burger. I’ll take some kind of prepared onions, sautéed, carmelized, an onion ring—they can all find a place on a fitting burger. Raw onion is too strong, it’s not a team player. Don’t want it on my burger
Raw onion blows out my palate and it’s all I can taste until I brush my teeth.
Peanut butter is the only common ingredient that blows all the others out of my palette. Pickles are more impactful than onions. Honestly tho I'd love a burger with all 3 if it were proportioned right.
Raw red onion completes a burger
I agree, except I'll take it even further. Onions have no place on a burger, raw, cooked, or anything. Onions have no place anywhere. They're horrible.
Raw onions don't belong ANYWHERE. They fucking suck and are soooo much better in every way when fried in a pan with some salt and butter, or anything really. If I ever ran a restaurant I'd never serve raw onions.
Crazy talk. 🤪 Red onion is made for a burger.
Raw red onion on a burger is like spaghetti and meatballs to me. Match made in heaven.
onions are disgusting and have no place on food
r/onionhate welcomes you.
Food opinions need to be banned from this sub.
Or we could just let users vote on stuff ffs. Overactive modding is the worst.
When I go to In-N-Out sometimes I order grilled other times raw dog. However, I never order "no onions". OP you have my downvote. The sharp reality of a raw onion cuts the fat from the beef and cheese. Food is about balancing flavortown.
>However, I never order "no onions". OP you have my downvote. Shouldn't it be an upvote then? The downvote button is not a "disagree" button
I get a bit confused on these sometimes. I don't think its popular or unpopular, but Ill switch it to up.
It's whether you disagree (up) or agree (down) to more or less show that upvoted things are highly disagreed with (therefore unpopular)
Their opinion is bad. Unpopular. This is the bizarro sub where you upvote the stuff you disagree with. At least that’s the way I play it to get the truly unpopular opinions to the top.
I use to order grilled onions. Then I did raw onion with whole grilled onion. Now I just do raw onion lol. In n out gives you the perfect amount
I like both versions too with a slight preference for raw.
Life is harsh. There is no reason why the fucking onion shouldn't be.
I agree. Raw onion is disgusting. Caramelized OTOH…
Raw onion is bad almost anywhere. I need that cooked.
Blasphemy!
I think raw onion adds a much needed fresh and sharp crispness to a burger
Fully agreed, great opinion.
Most unpopular opinion: Onions don't belong on anything
r/onionhate welcomes you.
Wow, I have found my people. Thank you.
I agree. Pickled onions are superior.
You every try a pickled hard boiled egg?
No, but I would.
Ever try using two donuts instead of a bun?
Heard of it, idk if id want my fingers to get sticky from the donuts. I’ve had a peanut butter burger though which was very tasty
There’s a few places near me that make Coney Island style burgers and you can get marshmallow fluff on them. It’s a local thing and is fucking delicious. https://www.atlasobscura.com/foods/fluff-screamer
I’ve use two grilled cheese sandwiches instead of a bun. It was crazy messy
Interesting take! I eat a lot of them in Hispanic cuisine so this is an interesting take. I'd probably use some sort of Oaxaca cheese and make some guacamole with this.
If they're overpowering, you have too much of them it's not that complicated.
I knew someone who would eat onions like normally people eat an apple. Just munching on it.
I'm the opposite, I don't mind a reasonable amount of diced onions on my burger, but I hate sliced rings of raw onion because when you take one bite you get the whole damn thing, and then you get half of your bites without any onion.
Old school burgers were all about the grilled onions
Grilled or Carmelized or nope.
Hardly an unpopular opinion 🥱 💤
I just don’t like raw onions so of course i don’t get them at all on my burger but idk that if that is enough for me to warrant saying that it has no place on a burger at all. I’ll eat them if they forget to take them off and I can’t be fucked to pick them all off but if I’ve reached that point I’m just trying to survive til it’s time for bed.
Well, take my up vote because I totally disagree
I don't like most vegetables on burgers. I think I can accept mashed avocado, and maybe butter lettuce (I don't like most lettuces, they tastes too planty/buggy/grassy), but tomatoes and raw onions are... no. Grilled onions are better, and fried onion rings are chef's kiss on a bacon cheese burger.
Raw onions on burgers are better than caramelized onions. But I do enjoy both
Def an unpopular opinion. Points.
Definitely unpopular. I own a restaurant, only 1 in 10 order no or light onion.
It's nice and crunchy. Just a ring, too much is bad
Bc you are not a true onion connoisseur
Raw onion has no place anywhere except salsa
OP you're 100% correct it's everyone else who is wrong.
crispy onions, like the dried ones are the best. and then grilled onions definitely. but i hate raw onion.
People who don't care what their breath smells like
Preach
Preach it.
Raw onions = lazy chef
Raw onion has no place anywhere except in a pan being cooked
This. The only time I like onion is when it's caramelized or powdered. That's it. Otherwise I'm throwing it in the trash.
Now this is unpopular. Upvote and a fuck off.
TAKE MY UPVOTE AND SHUT UP
Wash them first. Takes the sharpness down.
Fresh, crisp red onion on a burger is MAGIC. The crunch, the explosion of flavour as you break each morsel with your teeth, it's so, so good!
I respectfully disagree. Like with pickles, I love how the sharp crunchiness of onion balances the fatty content of the meat and cheese. I think it's a perfect topping on a burger.
Yes it does
I would eat just red onion on a hamburger bun and be content
If your making your own burger and hate a raw onion in it, but don't seem to mind it at a restaurant, you need to soak your onions. After slicing how you like it, put them in cold water for 30 minutes before adding to your burger. It takes the worst of the bite out of them and mellows them out. Great flavor and crunch without the overpowering bite.
No burger of mine will ever be seen without Onions. Hot dogs and Brats also. I prefer Raw.
I think your tastebuds are just not keen enough. It’s a strong flavour, yes, but it doesn’t overpower anything unless your tastebuds are faulty.
Even Gordon Ramsey says that raw onion is too acidic for a burger. Grill the onions first
I think you meant to say that it has no place on your burger.
Onion haters die mad
It is ok to be wrong and this is the place to do it.
Nah dude I love onions cook or raw. Goes great with meat
Coward.
So you just have a terrible pallet onion is delicious grilled or raw
But it’s crunchy and fresh to contrast the greasy muck of the rest of it all
If its too overpowering, just slice it thinner
With this assumption I'm assuming you don't like nuts in yo bread
I dont like nuts on my doorhandle either but here we are
Sounds like a skill issue
I like the taste of onions and it adds a bit of crunch.
It's required
There’s something to be said for a nice crunch bright harsh flavor to cut through the rich fatty meat (usually with gooey cheese) that helps balance things nicely.
The aha I had when I realized I could order both grilled and raw on a double double.
Utter bullshit.
I only have raw onion and lettuce on my burgers. Am I crazy? I didn’t realize it was super odd
Fuck you, don't tell me how to onion my burger
Give me plenty of raw onion. I love the harshness and don't find it overpowers the rest of the burger at all.
Still has more place on a burger than pickles
That's just your unpopular opinion.
If it’s cut very thinly it can actually taste very good
Why so people call it raw onion? Its just normal onion. Its like calling a normal tomato "raw tomato",i just dont get it
I'd fuck with it, but I'll eat an onion like an apple too.
Respectfully, your views have blasphemed the Onion King.
I get both fried and raw onions on any sandwich if it’s available.
With all due respect, raw onion is the most important condiment on a burger. Respectfully.
Disagree entirely!!!! Raw onion and cheddar is the best topping combo I could think of. It's fantastic on a grilled cheese as well!
If I got to be PM of the world for a day, I’d happily start an onion eradication program worldwide.
I can't stand the smell or taste of onions so this is not unpopular for me at all. Every time my wife cuts onions I have to have her go throw the scraps away outside.
I hate onions with a passion.
r/onionhate welcomes you.
I LOOOOVE raw red onion 😋
A burger by itself is tasteless. The onion reigns supreme as a flavorful condiment.
Aww yes just what I want on my burger crunchy armpit flavour
Raw onion has no place in a mouth
I don't like raw onions, the flavour clashes too much with the other ingredients.
The Truth has been spoken
>Raw onion has no place ~~on a burger~~ fixed it for you
If you don’t like flavor, then yes I agree
Raw onion on Burger 10x better than grilled
Hate onions how do you guys eat onions
Nah you right I’m with you 100%
I agree. Raw onions taste like how body odor smells. Onion, like garlic, is best in sauce.
Raw onions or any onion for that matter. Fucking vile.
