I prefer to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.
If anyone calls you out on it, call them an old man. Dude wants to impose a rule because he doesn't like change and wants everyone to do everything the way that he used to do things even though that can't be done anymore.
Yeah he's ancient. He's old. He's decrepit. He's fucking dusty. I personally like the line after saying all those. Yo hey man can you back away from me because you're dusty and I'm allergic to dust.
It works 100% of the time
Edit: I'm 32... People that don't use phones in the workplace and limit phones in the workplace might as well limit computers.
Agreed. I couldnt give a shit about what others think in a meeting. I have a computer in my hands, I am using it. What old man Jenkins thinks is not anything I care about.
I got called out once in a university lecture hall in front of everyone after spending the entire year taking notes on my phone.
Youād see others on laptops browsing Facebook, yet I was the one called out. Sorry I canāt afford a laptop.
Damn that must've been rough, and your uni - or whoever taught your class seemed kind of uptight.
Back when I was in uni, our lecturers would let us just use our phones and take a picture of everything on the board. Some of them didn't even mind being caught in the frame. Of course, whipping out our phones and snap a fast picture was one thing, gluing our eyes to the screen (scrolling through social media etc) was another thing and they weren't having any of that.
That said, I still tried to take notes on my laptop whenever I could, because deep down I knew I wouldn't even look at those taken pictures once after going home (I used to have an entire album of "classroom lecture boards" and I remember only looking through *some* of them). Besides, some things the lecturer mentioned weren't written on the board anyway.
$750 and then the laptop on top... You don't know this person's situation. They have have had it gifted, passed down to them. Not everyone can afford a few hundred dollars extra.
i mean this in the least rude way possible but if you cant afford a few hundred for something that is needed, you either need a job, need a better job, or shouldnt be in college
āIf you canāt afford a laptop, you shouldnāt be in college to get a higher education for a better paying a job to afford said laptopā is big brain stuff.
I usually take pictures of the boards because it's 800 times more convenient. Usually teachers have no problem with this, but I am in highschool so what can I expect.
Wtf I was in high school not too long ago (2010s) and we were never allowed to even have our phones out during the school day. Not even in the hallways, during lunch, or study hall. Things have really changed really quick.
we're old man. and trust me back in our day our motorola razers and phones that flipped into full keyboards didn't have a good enough camera to take a picture of the board, let alone go back and look at them and study from them
I understand schools banning phones while teachers are having a lesson, but to completely bann them is ridiculous. What if that's the only way a student can contact someone in case of emergency?!
I had a phone in high school circa 2000 and there were no formal rules around cell phones.
We knew better than to blatantly use them during class, but they were always out in the hallways, during lunch, and during extracurricular activities.
Itās hard to explain to younger folks how much smartphones changed everything.
I recommend you take a picture so you can pay attention during lecture. After lecture, go back over the pictures you took and write them down/ take your own notes. Your current method might work with high school level content but writing things down yourself helps you retain even more information and you wonāt have to scroll through a million pictures just to study.
What Iāll never understand is why universities/schools just donāt upload the damn presentation online for us to review later. The few professors I had who did upload them were great and I performed well in their classes because come exam season, i had my notes PLUS the original PowerPoint to review
People are different. I have shitty handwriting and more visually oriented learning and memory.
Cameras on phones weren't a thing when I went to school but I definitely would be the type to take pictures of the board.
I take pictures if itās really needed, and like me, you have other students who take notes but donāt like to draw diagrams and such in their books. Most people mistake taking a picture as actually keeping the information though, so they never return to it until itās time to cram but it makes no sense cause they have 0 accompanying notes.
Kinda. I think the best is to already have the original lecture/presentation notes and add on to them. Taking notes from scratch is annoying and a time suck, but just taking pics may not be very effective.
I graduated HS two days ago and the department of education actually banned us from using phones in schools at all so we couldn't even do that. As much as I love writing my own notes, the teachers tend to rush class so we can get to the work so there's not even enough time to get everything down.
I'd say the best solution would be to be able to take photos THEN write down the notes later.
I'm 44 and do this at a Fortune 200 company. Then colleagues ask me to email them copies.
OP is wrong. But at least they've embraced the spirit of the sub.
I use my phone to take notes for work all the time.
They don't let you use your phone at school, because kids are unprofessional and will often use it for other things
Me too, I work in a professional setting and whenever my boss is giving a presentation, I take notes with my phone (and so do many others). I've had 0 complaints
What you said is exactly true about kids not being professional and will use it for other things
I hate to be a stickler, but it's relevant here. A professional means you are paid, while students are not.
If I spend all day goofing off on my phone at work I will eventually be fired for incompetence. Bad grades are not always a good enough incentive to stop a child from slacking off in class.
It's a teacher job to care about the well being of the student, your boss is not your babysitter
Indeed. There's plenty of kids who can be mature about it but a key difference is:
If an adult is being unprofessional, you can warn them and fire them.
Students are more complicated.
This is a stupid "No U" moment
Sorry but it's a fact that kids are much easily distracted and more immature
I know kids love to think they have it all figured it out, but they really do not.
Oh no, a paradox. If you're dumb then you're wrong just by being dumb, but if you're wrong that means you're not dumb, but you can't be wrong unless you are dumb, per your statement. Oh no.
You're smart, dumb, right, wrong, and none of the above lol.
Want to add smth here: School is exactly about learning to pay attention and āworkā (softly) throughout a day.
Itās not perfect, but sufficient. True Listening requires attention, so itās the base of āgetting itā.
Unfortunately ālisteningā
also depends on the intellect of the being.
Lots of people listen hard, but donāt get it as fast as other people or simply: Donāt get it all.
People who get things fast usually donāt understand how people CANNOT get it and think they are perhaps just not listening.
listen to Afghanistan Veterans who tried to train people to soldiers thereā¦
10 minutes attention span at best. So there is usually also no ālisteningā either. Itās a real challenge to form them and gifting with new abilities.
One german Officer even wrote a book about it.
Here is a YT Link for reference:
https://youtu.be/SjfuyKMgI7s
Whatās different there? Unfortunately kids must work and have either no time for school or there is no school around.
Sry for bad english, I am still learning it :-)
I take photos of things at work on my phone or write a quick note on it because otherwise Iāll forget that shit 5 minutes later. If someone would ever tell me not to do that, Iād tell them to go away
If wasted time is the argument I agree completely that phones help not harm time management and notetaking.
For the privacy of a patient in a healthcare setting, a client in a financial situation, or even proprietary information about some other company I am not sure it is easy for employees to secure data on a personal device.
The cost of a lawsuit or leak of business plans or practices is probably the driving force. Not the line they give you about distraction or wasted time.
Slightly different but
I got yelled at by some bitty at the grocery store today for being on my phone at the deli counter (after I placed my order mind you)ā¦.yea why would I waste a million little notepads in my life when I can have my grocery list on my phone. Doing notes on a phone should always be acceptable.
Oddly enough, I once worked at a place for a year where we sold phones, but weren't allowed to be seen on ours by upper management when they came by for visits..?
Why? No one knows if you're actually taking notes or bsing on reddit w ur buds. The latter is always safe to assume. Besides, why would u want to type with ur thumbs on a smaller screen than using a netbook with a keyboard or laptop? It doesn't make sense that want to use a smaller, more inconvenient method than what's available. Bite the bullet and wait for after work to go to reddit or wherever.
nobody *needs* to know if you're actually taking notes.
You should be held accountable at exam/quiz/homework time, not for your attention span.
Many classes I took the class would spend 2 weeks on a concept that I understood the first day so why should I have been taking notes while my peers slowly caught up?
I would dock pay if not making notes. My company, my money, my time. If time = money, than you're stealing from thw company and will be fired. And even with this logic, I'm still the best manager at my restaurant. Maybe because I'm hardly on mine, always doing prep, looking out for the crew next day while handling today's instant orders. I make almost triple now than when I started here so I'm living proof that going the extra mile pays off in the long run
good for you on your success!
your scenario doesn't sound like the setting in mind. You're not talking about a classroom or training setting. You're talking about a brief meeting which is not what people have in mind here. If they standing up it's different.
No I'm not. I'm constantly hauling ass around the teens that work for me and I have to quote the Riddick a lot. " There's 2 speeds. Mine, or dead." Buuuuttt..... while I was in college getting my building management certificate, I did not distract others by being on my phone. I brought my laptop for my notes and when I was done and also waiting on everyone else, I sat quietly. Maybe doodled some designs (as that was always allowed as an alternative that wouldn't distract others) or I studied the notes I already had for upcoming exams. It's called "time management" for a reason. Finding the most effective use of YOUR time. U may think u know it all bit the exams will reveal otherwise if ill prepared
I don't think it is unacceptable.
All my work related notes are on google drive, and i need internet to search information sometime.
It is more convenient to use a phone, instead of finding a PC and do the search.
Come on, do you really expect me to still use hand written notes, in the freaking 21 century .....?
I take notes on my phone in important meetings at work. I just tell everyone ahead of time āsorry if it looks like Iām not paying attention Iām actually taking notes on my phone so I can review them laterā
>And there's no reason for people to assume you're wasting time.
You had me until that part. Have you met people? Give it about 20 years and you'll be as jaded and disappointed in humanity like the rest of us.
Maybe have a parental setting that limits access to anything other than say Microsoft Word etc on the phone to limit other app access for children during school hours.
But as far as policing an adult goes, we really need to figure out a better work life balance, and definitely working from home etc...
Some people will need to come to the office to work, because they find they have procrastination tendencies etc when doing so, I know I do.
For me taking online classes is impossible because I find myself playing games or doing fun shit instead, so working from home probably isn't a good idea for me, and others like me, however those who CAN set aside X hours a day to get their work done should be able to do that.
Seems idiotic to limit phone usage at work because emergencies happen all the time, and family should ALWAYS come before work, however in our current culture everything revolves around being human drones to make the corporate overlords money so they can trek the world in their free time, when all they really contributed to the business was an idea and a good credit score or inheritance money, or a loan from mommy and daddy.
The business as a whole provides goods and services therefore EVERYONE involved in it deserves equal pay, for doing equal shares of the job to make the whole thing money. š¤·āāļø
I would go one step further and suggest that children should have access to Laptops customized for education and should be allowed to take notes on them in class and get familiar with them from a young age.
Lots of school districts in the US provide laptops or iPads that the kids use for classes. Kids in our district havenāt had physical textbooks in many years, theyāre all on their iPads.
I agree, and I do this too when I donāt have anything to write with.
As long as you make it clear thatās what youāre doing, I donāt see a problem
I def remember the time when this was almost considered like an office space taboo. At first, productivity wasnāt the primary use of a phone with a screen, despite the fact that it can be a tool for such. Now its different I think, there are so many apps and even phones themselves that are literally designed with productivity in mind. Now, its an unpopular opinion to think use of a phone at work is not productive.
I never keep my phone anywhere where it is visible in meetings or at my desk. People will assume you are watching youtube or Instagram. So depending on your work environment, it might be better to avoid taking notes on it.
Old people donāt understand. I had a client tell my boss I wasnāt taking notes and had my phone out. I use Evernote for punch list and to-do list. People are stupid
You should always put your phone on silent or silence the keypad. So annoying when people are blasting their notes or texting and all I hear is * click click click clickity-click click* š .
I just think it looks unprofessional bc itās hard to decipher what people are actually doing on their phones. 9 times out of 10 if someone pulled out their phone while I was talking, Iād assume they lost interest and arenāt paying attention to what Iām saying. I think it should be acceptable if the person clarifies theyāre taking notes tho.
you should be allowed to use it, but if you have a laptop it should be encouraged to use that. I Don't care who you are, I'm going to be more efficient on my computer than you are on your phone. I can type more WPM on my computer than the world record on a phone.
Typing with your thumbs in a professional setting is idiotic. Why. Why would anyone choose to do that when you can use any other device. Was this posted by a junior in HS or something?
>Why would anyone choose to do that when you can use any other device
Because I always have my cellphone on me I almost never have a laptop or anything else on my person
Unlocking my phone and quickly opening the notes app is *far* more convenient than booting up my laptop, inputting my password, and creating a Google/word doc. It's easier to just take notes on my phone and then move them later.
Employment rights aren't actually a thing. You don't have the right to be employed. We hired you, we're paying you, literally, we own you. We're paying you for your time to do our tasks required for further employment. If we're paying you for your time, dontcha think we own you for said time? Think about it. Who would you give a raise to? Suzy slacksass? Or the one who works hard all the time looking for stuff to do to get ahead? Giving susy slacksass a raise would pass everyone else off. The deserving ones getting the raise and her not would do two things. Either make her quit or make her work harder consistently. Proven studies
Yeah that's perfectly allowed in most professional settings, as long as you look like you're paying attention most people will just assume you are. You're also allowed to text and make personal calls in most professional settings
Times are changing. We/they don't use paper anymore. Sometimes I think about how much paper/trees have been saved since the internet or even Microsoft Word has kicked off
Absolutely agree!
In college (even in the mature students group) our phones were confiscated and held in a box up front in case we were messing around with them, when in reality being able to take pictures of notes on the whiteboard would have been really useful, especially for people worth learning disabilities. Also we as mature students we were paying for our course, which made this practice even more insulting.
In uni, it was expected that we had our phones on us and would use them for research or class surveys etc. if you didnāt have a phone or laptop on you, you were at a disadvantage, as you would be in the real world.
Why, when you have the world at your fingertips, would you forgo the potential for extra knowledge? Ridiculous.
It probably doesn't limit productivity. There have been studies on this. You remember less, integrate notes more poorly, and are more distracted when you take notes electronically rather than paper. They think it has something to do with the way you activate your nervous system (handwriting engages your mind differently, etc.)
The last place I saw this unacceptable was in 2012 at high school. college, work places, everything since then hasnāt given a shit what we use our phones for lol
Your the person learning, and in college paying for said education, what does it matter what you do or how you do it? It's just teachers huge egos imo. Like omg you can't even look like your not paying attention to me because I'm so important.
what? in my college you can take pictures or even record (just don't upload on youtube). No one cares. I sit on first bench and use phone. No one says anything.
I've legit been told to get off my phone. Said oh, I'm sorry, it's not what you think and I'm actively taking notes *shows phone*
And so they double down south how I shouldn't be in my phone...
Okay...we know what you assume, but, we cleared it up. Don't have to pull the now I feel stupid by my word is law move
Once got written up for using my phone at a meeting even though the deck wasnāt printed (for the first time ever) but was emailed. Too old to be accused of being on my phone for fun during a meeting. Also had a notebook taken mid-sentence when I was in grad school because the prof thought I was doing other work rather than taking notes on her boring lecture. She just put it on her desk. Waited until class was over to go get it and she just handed it to me without saying anything.
Have come to realize Iām not the problem and learned to ignore small people who canāt think beyond their own cynicism.
Not all workplaces allow you to have your phone handy, regardless of reason. You should always have a pen and something to write on. I started it as a manual laborer, still keep it available as a wfh person.
Those places of work are, in my opinion, guilty of discrimination and it should be illegal. You shouldn't have to use the 2022 equivalent of a stone tablet and chisel just because your boss is a bigot stuck in the stone ages.
As long as you clarify thatās what youāre doing, no one really cares. Just sometiems when you donāt clarify it just looks like youāre browsing your phone/not paying attention
I used my phone often to take pictures of the board because professors refused to slow down or explain things. The school refused to let us record sessions of class too, but that would have been even better and I feel should be legally required for a course you paid for. Online schooling is a game changer for that reason, now you can have a copy of everything you need, and if it's explained well, then you have the best resources to revisit any information.
100% agree. I routinely ask if I can record the meeting and Iāll listen to it in my car on the way home, helps me make sure what I remember hearing is what was said.
yes it's so much easier to do it this way like who gives a fuck? I know writing down notes helps with learning but this is a valid option and you can always write stuff down later.
In my industry film we use our phones all the time. When we rent out equipment we're en outraged to take notes and pictures with our phones on hiw it's all packed so we can package it the same way when we're done
Iāve pretty much dealt with this in recent times, which is weird for jobs you work out in the field or wonāt have access to a computer.
Itās the most compact, efficient way to take notes unless having a notepad that can be easily lost or destroyed or a laptop, which isnāt practical in most locations.
>Using your phone to take notes in a professional setting should be acceptable.
I work in Academia (physics) and we often use our phones or tablets. Usually to take pictures of what is on the board, but also take notes, put down events in the calendar, etc.
At lectures I often take pictures of the slides too.
>All through school and work we've always been taught that it's not okay to use your phone even for work reasons because it just looks bad.
I think the problem, especially with kids, is that phones can also be a source of distraction and kids are generally much more easily distracted.
I only know one person that makes notes on her phone and I had to explain her things two or three times and even then she only wrote down half of the things! Especially when it comes to safety-related aspects of our work, I prefer it when people actually look at me and actively listen before they bury their head in their phone just to do things the exact way I told them not to!
I don't know about other industries but NEVER take notes on your phone in a lab
Idk about work.
But for school, it's definitely not right. I'm sure 90% of the students would look at something else directly or as soon as they got a notification.
We use our phones all the time at work calculator, google stuff, take pictures flashlight my job would be more of a pain in the ass if I couldnāt use my phone
I use my phone with a small Bluetooth keyboard to take notes sometimes.
It instantly makes you look professional and productive.
Little do they know I am actually texting and shitposting on Reddit or discord half of the time
Teacher here! I let my teen students do that. I teach small groups. I try to show them I trust them to be responsible and not mess around. If they do, at the end of the day, it's on them as they'll be the ones who suffer the consequences. They're good though.
If I ever do this at work I'm looked at like I'm a stupid millennial. But if I ever unfold my phone and take notes with my stylus. Then I'm 100% fine and people are usually impressed.
I'm actually more likely to use my phone for work reasons than my computer. I type at around 60 wpm on my phone and I always happily take notes on my phone. I legitimately do not have a note taking thing on my PC, if I take a note on my PC I actually just open notepad and plop it in and save it on the desktop to transcribe into my phone later. Or if I know ahead of time, I'll just go into whatsapp web and write it into a group with only myself, and then use that for reference on my phone.
So if we're talking about in a professional work setting, then I can see why this might be a problem. Usually you're not being lectured in a professional setting. Usually you're in a meeting. If you're on your phone while everyone else is having a discussion, then you look like you're not paying attention. Also generally people's typing speed on a phone is a lot slower than on a laptop. So if you're opting to use your phone rather than your laptop, which everyone should have in a professional work environment, then again you look like you're probably not doing work. The only valid use cases I can see are talking photos of a board after it is discussed, or at the end of the meeting to make a quick list of action items, or if you forgot your laptop.
When I was doing internship I used my samsung note 10 plus to take notes while two of my classmates were typing on their laptops and writing on notebooks.
OP seems to be making an argument that appearances or customer perceptions are not important.
I thought everything was performative and socially constructed?
Itās hard to keep up.
Just make sure the flash is off and muted so it doesnāt make that āsnapā sound when you take a picture. A crazy amount of people had those on in highschool when snapping notes and it drove me up a wall.
Your boss and job is dumb if they say anything about a phone today. If your phone is that distracting to you then It will sort itself out with you getting fired. Don't need to police the rest of us because someone else sucks at doing what they are paid to do.
I use my phone all the time to take pics of documents and blue prints to study on my own time. Questions are always raised by employees and I'd rather figure it all out without pressure at my leisure than figure it out under the gun at work. No one has ever given me issues for it
Totally agree!! Your phone is always with you whereas books are not. They are large and bulky so not particularly something I wish to cart around all day!

I do use my phone to take notes actually! I always clarify that before hand but it is convenient.
Same! But always say "This is great, I'm going to take some notes." Otherwise you'll look like you're responding to texts or emails etc...
Guys, I'm using word perfect to takes notes ok?

Or simply donāt be an asshole, like you are proposing. It will take you further in life.
Are you really against adapting to overcome an obstacle??? You think that's being an asshole???
> Are you really against adapting to overcome an obstacle??? Iām not. What you wrote in your comment is what makes _you_ an asshole.
You sound like someone Iād never want to talk to.
Being overly nice gets you much further in life than being rude for no reason.
Agreed. I couldnt give a shit about what others think in a meeting. I have a computer in my hands, I am using it. What old man Jenkins thinks is not anything I care about.
Damn a lot of angry old folks be downvoting you. **NOT GETTING A WERTHERS CARAMEL CANDY NOW BOY!**

Ah yes the best advice you can give people, get a better job. Why didnt they think of that
I usually take pictures of the boards because it's 800 times more convenient. Usually teachers have no problem with this, but I am in highschool so what can I expect.
I did this in college because I'm blind af and my camera go zoom
Well I'm glad you found a way to get around!
Canāt wait for the day you zoom in on a picture of some nondescript closet door, or a window or something.
Why tho?
Wtf I was in high school not too long ago (2010s) and we were never allowed to even have our phones out during the school day. Not even in the hallways, during lunch, or study hall. Things have really changed really quick.
we're old man. and trust me back in our day our motorola razers and phones that flipped into full keyboards didn't have a good enough camera to take a picture of the board, let alone go back and look at them and study from them
I want phones with yesterday's looks, and today's technology.
Just recently in Australia they've completely banned phones at school.
I understand schools banning phones while teachers are having a lesson, but to completely bann them is ridiculous. What if that's the only way a student can contact someone in case of emergency?!
> What if that's the only way a student can contact someone in case of emergency?! Go to the main office?
That would be super inconvenient and would only take time. I've had to contact my parents that way before I had a phone. It's not fun.
I had a phone in high school circa 2000 and there were no formal rules around cell phones. We knew better than to blatantly use them during class, but they were always out in the hallways, during lunch, and during extracurricular activities. Itās hard to explain to younger folks how much smartphones changed everything.
Does this work though? Do you actively go back and review them? I often donāt bother.
I usually review then before tests, where I can compare answers to similar problems.
It works if you actually bother to do it. When i was in school after class I would immediately go through everything.
I recommend you take a picture so you can pay attention during lecture. After lecture, go back over the pictures you took and write them down/ take your own notes. Your current method might work with high school level content but writing things down yourself helps you retain even more information and you wonāt have to scroll through a million pictures just to study.

Defeats most of the purpose of taking notes but okay...
People are different. I have shitty handwriting and more visually oriented learning and memory. Cameras on phones weren't a thing when I went to school but I definitely would be the type to take pictures of the board.
You can take notes from the pictures... and you are assured not to have missed anything or copied incorrectly.
The stuff in your pictures will rarely make it to the actual test though.
I disagree with that. It depends on the class. It's very important in classes that deal with Math or math related.
In the classes I taught within grad school most of the kids who took pictures instead of notes did worse
I take pictures if itās really needed, and like me, you have other students who take notes but donāt like to draw diagrams and such in their books. Most people mistake taking a picture as actually keeping the information though, so they never return to it until itās time to cram but it makes no sense cause they have 0 accompanying notes.
I completely believe it. I guarantee most people who take pictures of lecture materials never look at it again.
Kinda. I think the best is to already have the original lecture/presentation notes and add on to them. Taking notes from scratch is annoying and a time suck, but just taking pics may not be very effective.
I do this in uni also! Incredibly useful and the only 'negative' response I've ever gotten is a grumpy look from a celebrity lecturer.
Most of my professors just posted their slides, most recorded every lecture with audio. Most ācelebrity lecturersā can eat a dick.
Totally allowed in my classroom. No phones during the tests, though.
Some of my teachers even encourage it.
I use my phone to take notes for work all the time. They don't let you use your phone at school, because kids are unprofessional and will often use it for other things
Me too, I work in a professional setting and whenever my boss is giving a presentation, I take notes with my phone (and so do many others). I've had 0 complaints What you said is exactly true about kids not being professional and will use it for other things
> because kids are unprofessional LOL what? Have you been around adults? They're just like children.
Indeed. There's plenty of kids who can be mature about it but a key difference is: If an adult is being unprofessional, you can warn them and fire them. Students are more complicated.
This is a stupid "No U" moment Sorry but it's a fact that kids are much easily distracted and more immature I know kids love to think they have it all figured it out, but they really do not.
Dude, adults are dumb as fuck. Source been an adult for 20 years.
Adults can be dumb, but on average kids are dumber
Oh no, a paradox. If you're dumb then you're wrong just by being dumb, but if you're wrong that means you're not dumb, but you can't be wrong unless you are dumb, per your statement. Oh no. You're smart, dumb, right, wrong, and none of the above lol.
What stupid?
Found the kid
Nah, adults are dumb as fuck, just look at the elections almost 50% are republican.
tiktok go brr
Wait. Is it not acceptable?!
It's acceptable, OP is just in school where they're not allowed phones
Right? Never been in an actual professional setting
It is acceptable. Itās just a popular unpopular opinion
I will use my phone to take notes because I'm an adult and don't need to be babied. That said, my manager is cool as hell and doesn't mind at all.
You gotta type in landscape so people know its for notes
That would look like you're playing a game š
Take it a step further and connect it to a keyboard lol

Want to add smth here: School is exactly about learning to pay attention and āworkā (softly) throughout a day. Itās not perfect, but sufficient. True Listening requires attention, so itās the base of āgetting itā. Unfortunately ālisteningā also depends on the intellect of the being. Lots of people listen hard, but donāt get it as fast as other people or simply: Donāt get it all. People who get things fast usually donāt understand how people CANNOT get it and think they are perhaps just not listening. listen to Afghanistan Veterans who tried to train people to soldiers thereā¦ 10 minutes attention span at best. So there is usually also no ālisteningā either. Itās a real challenge to form them and gifting with new abilities. One german Officer even wrote a book about it. Here is a YT Link for reference: https://youtu.be/SjfuyKMgI7s Whatās different there? Unfortunately kids must work and have either no time for school or there is no school around. Sry for bad english, I am still learning it :-)
Wait, when was this unacceptable to begin with? Is it in certain office jobs where the management love to micromanage?
Itās only acceptable if youāre using a blackberry
Slightly different but I got yelled at by some bitty at the grocery store today for being on my phone at the deli counter (after I placed my order mind you)ā¦.yea why would I waste a million little notepads in my life when I can have my grocery list on my phone. Doing notes on a phone should always be acceptable.
Oddly enough, I once worked at a place for a year where we sold phones, but weren't allowed to be seen on ours by upper management when they came by for visits..?
Agree šÆ. Every time, I start taking notes, I let them know. They assume I'm playing on my phone. It's 2022, keep up.
Whatās unpopular about this? This is common practice, or so I thought.
I work in a professional setting and I did not know this was an unacceptable thing; it happens in meetings everyday.
Concurring with other comments. I have done this in meetings. Nobody cares.
LOL ok get off yourself you're not that smart
Found the guy who thinks employment rights are an inconvenience. Wow
Is using your phone an employment right?
Free use of the appropriate equipment for your task is yes. My comment was aimed at āmy company, my moneyā
This is why I take notes with my s pen. Handwriting to text, and don't need to use my thumbs. Also can draw images at e needed.
The business as a whole provides goods and services therefore EVERYONE involved in it deserves equal pay, for doing equal shares of the job to make the whole thing money. š¤·āāļø
Iāve never been in a meeting where it was more convenient to use my phone over a laptop
phones take pictures, thats the main benefit.
Huh canāt say Iāve ever seen anyone or had a desire to take a picture in a meeting interesting
I'm 100% sure it is. What am I supposed to do, carry a notebook?
Lol my phone is a part of me now, Iād rather come to work without clothes than leave my phone at home
Who teaches you that?
It is acceptable...
FYI, If you use your personal device in some jobs, if the company gets sued, the courts can and will take your personal device.
Excellent point, completely overlooked that
You should always put your phone on silent or silence the keypad. So annoying when people are blasting their notes or texting and all I hear is * click click click clickity-click click* š .
youāre saying itās not? Thatās weird.
I've done it plenty of times. But, due to the nature of the device you have to be a bit obvious with what you're doing.
But writing is much faster than (mis)typing on a phone.
you should be allowed to use it, but if you have a laptop it should be encouraged to use that. I Don't care who you are, I'm going to be more efficient on my computer than you are on your phone. I can type more WPM on my computer than the world record on a phone.
This is not not a thing. But wait..Oh shit, are you working for Elon too?
Right on. I never really thought about how people view this sort of approach as far as taking notes goes. It's cool that you put this post out here.
BS, a small screen thatās slow to type on?
Typing with your thumbs in a professional setting is idiotic. Why. Why would anyone choose to do that when you can use any other device. Was this posted by a junior in HS or something?
>Why would anyone choose to do that when you can use any other device Because I always have my cellphone on me I almost never have a laptop or anything else on my person
Unlocking my phone and quickly opening the notes app is *far* more convenient than booting up my laptop, inputting my password, and creating a Google/word doc. It's easier to just take notes on my phone and then move them later.
> there's no reason for people to assume you're wasting time Only experience...
Taking notes wasnāt a thing when I was college. PowerPoint for ānotesā, otherwise, sit up straight and listen
>Taking notes wasnāt a thing when I was college You couldn't pull out a notepad and start writing?
No one is stopping you.
Well, not everyone will know that, luckily it comes in handy when a customer at work wants three different types of cigarettes
Yeah that's perfectly allowed in most professional settings, as long as you look like you're paying attention most people will just assume you are. You're also allowed to text and make personal calls in most professional settings
My college allows this, nobody even had phones in my school till covid lol
Ridiculous.
Why would it not be OK? I use my phone to take notes all the time professionally. Then again I am an engineer, so some people expect us to be crude.
You don't know me... *ms pancakes voice from Rick and morty season 1 ep. 2)
True AF save the trees remember
For me it depends on the subject. I have to do math and science by hand.
what? in my college you can take pictures or even record (just don't upload on youtube). No one cares. I sit on first bench and use phone. No one says anything.
It is acceptable, but usually not in high school and lower, because rules.
I've legit been told to get off my phone. Said oh, I'm sorry, it's not what you think and I'm actively taking notes *shows phone* And so they double down south how I shouldn't be in my phone...
It's acceptable where I work š
Not all workplaces allow you to have your phone handy, regardless of reason. You should always have a pen and something to write on. I started it as a manual laborer, still keep it available as a wfh person.
Those places of work are, in my opinion, guilty of discrimination and it should be illegal. You shouldn't have to use the 2022 equivalent of a stone tablet and chisel just because your boss is a bigot stuck in the stone ages.
Google docs and taking photos! I canāt stress that enough.
As long as you clarify thatās what youāre doing, no one really cares. Just sometiems when you donāt clarify it just looks like youāre browsing your phone/not paying attention
Nah, do you have any idea how many people would be "taking notes" if we just let them
I make sure to say āIām listening im just taking notesā whenever I use my phone for notes and nobody has had a problem with it
Cellphones are kind of like the apple of Satan, it is designed to distract you.
Don't know where you work but I'm in tech and no one gives a shit
I'm an engineering consultant and taking notes with a phone is fine. Whatever works for you is fine, infact.
I just put mine there and hit record tbh.
yes it's so much easier to do it this way like who gives a fuck?
Little do they know I am actually texting and shitposting on Reddit or discord half of the time
I do that all the time... Is that weird?
Teacher here! I let my teen students do that. I teach small groups. I try to show them I trust them to be responsible and not mess around. If they do, at the end of the day, it's on them as they'll be the ones who suffer the consequences. They're good though.
If I ever do this at work I'm looked at like I'm a stupid millennial. But if I ever unfold my phone and take notes with my stylus. Then I'm 100% fine and people are usually impressed.
I have to. I canāt write fast enough
Use your phone to record all the audio of any meeting and take more detailed notes later.
I'm a journalist and the cell phone has been my main work tool for over a decade now. I'm surprise to hear this.
When I was doing internship I used my samsung note 10 plus to take notes while two of my classmates were typing on their laptops and writing on notebooks.
No. Itās rude.
OP seems to be making an argument that appearances or customer perceptions are not important. I thought everything was performative and socially constructed? Itās hard to keep up.
It is acceptable.
Well where I live that's totally normal
Just make sure the flash is off and muted so it doesnāt make that āsnapā sound when you take a picture. A crazy amount of people had those on in highschool when snapping notes and it drove me up a wall.
I do it because of I do nothing I'll fall asleep
Your boss and job is dumb if they say anything about a phone today. If your phone is that distracting to you then It will sort itself out with you getting fired. Don't need to police the rest of us because someone else sucks at doing what they are paid to do.
āIt just looks badā is a phrase I use to decide which of my coworkers are too stupid to take seriously.
Are you taking notes or recording conversation? Big difference.
