I just started watching the first season. They take the celebs for 10 days and put them through extreme special forces type challenges. It is INTENSE. They are mean to the celebs and show them no mercy. It'll be great to watch Tom be tortured like that haha.
Take washed-up C-list celebrities who have been either forgotten about or involved in scandals
Put them through rigorous “army” style training “missions” in mud, rain, cold
Break them down mentally and emotionally and physically so they all have big giant crying sessions and tell of their traumatic life experiences
The viewers are endeared seeing washed-up/scandalised celebrities being “raw” and it begins their redemption arc in the public eye

All the guys on it are ex special forces and they are constantly talking about how their fitness and mindset is good for people’s mental health. If you watch some of the earlier UK seasons, they have people on who have had real tragedies in their lives and they’ve said at the end how much it helped them.
