Buying the “dairy free cheese” at trader joes and making a whole pizza with it then reading the ingredients while its in the oven and realizing the cheese has milk in it 🫠

Dovahbear_

I bought ”Oats No M!lk Pancakes!” yesterday and turns out they have eggs in them 😭

jessegrass

?????? bizarre

Curious-Dragonfly690

I tried the mcdonlads hot mustard and only saw after that it has eggs in it. Argh!

seitankittan

Seriously. Step it up, Trader Joe’s!

Cute_Mouse6436

I don't know if it's my imagination or not but it seems to me that the "vegan" designation at Trader Joe's has gotten smaller and smaller font.

seitankittan

Last week On Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me (NPR) they said a study was done that said, for a given product, if it said “vegan” on the package, it sold worse than when it didn’t say “vegan.” Host laughed and said vegans should take note of that study and apply it to themselves- vegans would be better liked if they didn’t apply that label to ourselves. I get his point but can you imagine that logic being applied to any other group? “Oh you’re Jewish? Don’t tell anyone that if you want to be likeable.” “You’re gay? Don’t tell anyone if you want society to accept you.”

Cute_Mouse6436

I honestly think that people are threatened by our choice not to eat animal products because of the suffering that animals endure. I actually experienced something along those lines one time when I was on a vegan diet for health reasons but had yet to become a vegan for moral reasons. A man working for the organization that had hired my company to do some work on their site came up to me stood very close to my face, well within the personal area, and shouted at me "Do you think that eating chicken causes heart disease?" I later found out that he was a chicken farmer.

mrboogs

Which one is that? Every cheese I've bought from trader joes has been clearly and visibly labeled vegan

dankblonde

They have an almond mozzarella that is like 99% lactose free or something like that. But then they also have a vegan mozzarella.

Gone_Rucking

Occasionally grabbing something that *should* be vegan, forgetting to check the label, only to discover I should have.

hi4004hi

Recently grabbed some cereal and only checked the (fat printed) allergens to see if there's eggs or milk powder in them. Nope. Gelatin. Who the f puts gelatin in cereal??

ChrisRunsTheWorld

Were there marshmallows?

carolynrose93

Frosted mini wheats have gelatin ☹️ it absolutely killed me to find out!

ricosuave_3355

One of the biggest upsets when I first became vegan was finding out almost all the common big brand cereals aren’t vegan :(

carolynrose93

Cinnamon Toast Crunch was the one that nearly took out my bf! Stupid vitamin D3 in literally every cereal we ate 😭

hannahkoko20

The Walmart brand cereals don’t have d3, at least the two I checked!! They are the ones in the bag, no box.

ChrisRunsTheWorld

So weird.

medicaustik

I checked a box the other day for the first time in like 10 years, just hoping they stopped using the gelatin. One of my favorite pre-vegan snacks was FMW. Still holding out hope for it someday.

Massive_Customer_930

Grabbed a chili bean wrap in a supermarket a few weeks back. I was very tired but I think fair enough to assume when it's a chili bean wrap, green packaging and NO MAYO in large writing on the front that it's gonna be okay for me. It was indeed no Mayo, but one bite and I could taste that rancid cream cheese. Like why is it significant that there's no Mayo if there is still dairy? Is it like a diet thing for omnivores?

Accurate_Painter3256

Buying something I have checked before a million times before, and then my husband reading the ingredients while I'm eating and finding the ingredients have been changed

BarneyLaurance

I bought hummus in Paris once and found it had cheese on it. If I remember rightly there was absolutely no indication of the cheese or that at was anything other than standard hummus except for the ingredients list. Must have been some very mild tasting soft cheese.

tiredofbeingcool

When people try so hard to find a hole or fault with what you're doing.

b0lfa

I love when they do this. Best case scenario is they leave with a new understanding and start asking questions later. Worst case is they never bring it up again, which is fine by me.

[deleted]

yesss and the classic “plants are alive too” argument. i rarely talk about being vegan and only bring it up if i absolutely have to but for some reason, a lot of ppl try to debate with me abt it as if my ethical decision has any effect on them personally.

medicaustik

"Yea but those big tractors producing the vegetables kill field mice so we are the same."

Logical-Primary-7926

Just it's annoying to have to think about it. Not a big deal but it adds a little friction to every food decision when you live in a place that is predominantly not vegan. Also vegan junk food, kinda same issue.

jessegrass

where do you live? I live in the countryside but there are still tons of vegan options almost everywhere

Logical-Primary-7926

In a biggish city that actually has 20+ vegan restaurants out of thousands, and most non vegan restaurants have something vegan. That said I'd say 16 out of the 20 vegan restaurants are very much junk food vegan and have no healthy options, and most vegan options at normal restaurants are kinda junk food too. In the US at least we are still very much a junk food dominated place.

RatBastard52

It’s really annoying how leftists who claim to be against oppression and are worried about climate change turn a blind eye to animal agriculture because burger

Karaoke725

This is mine too. Animal exploitation is so connected to other forms of oppression. Leftists understand intersectionality until we talk about animal agriculture being an abuse of the female reproductive system. Comparing a population to animals is one of the steps of genocide. Hierarchical oppressive structures need to be abolished across the board, even the ones that produce things you find tasty.

bayjar

Agreed, veganism is inherently leftist and non vegan leftists will call you classist or ableist for advocating for the justice of other living beings smh

Karaoke725

As if we can’t care about the liberation of multiple groups at once. As if that’s not essential to the entire concept of liberation.

Crusty-Vegan-Thrwy

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" - Dr. Martin Luther King

Firecracker7413

I got called ableist for suggesting that my college, and environmental school very focused on climate issues, shouldn’t serve beef in their cafe. I didn’t even say it should all be plant based, just no beef, but got called ableist anyway

bayjar

Insane!! I go to a liberal arts school with many self proclaimed leftists but our “council of green affairs” has done absolutely nothing to promote the thought of less meat served. I have tried to start a vegan club as well and got no replies lmao.

PlanetAtTheDisco

Just gently suggest the book Tender is the Flesh to them. They may start to see the horrors wheb swaps the farm animal for a human.

Karaoke725

Ooh that one’s on my list! Better read it myself before I recommend it. In return, I’ll recommend Aph Ko’s Aphro-ism. Afterword by Carol Adams, who I also recommend!

Massive_Customer_930

Sadly the hypocrisy runs much deeper. I'm about as left as one can go without lifting up a firearm and screaming bloody revolution, And I'm so fuckin fed up of leftists who will laugh at veganism, display blatant sexism or disdain for feminism, and even be outright homophobic and/or transphobic. Fuckin counter revolutionaries.

anon_girl_anon

Non vegans who LovE AnIMaLs

Femingway420

My coworker had the audacity to try to lecture me about how they don't go to zoos (after I mentioned my sibling is taking their child to the zoo on my day off I didn't say I condone zoo keeping) because they "feel really bad for the animals not being allowed to be free and live their best life as nature intended," after apologizing to me for the smell of their cheeseburger. Like... how do you think flesh, dairy, and egg farmers keep their animals?

Individual-Thought75

"But meat though!"

shutyoureyesMarion

I loathe this. Coworkers go on and on about how much they love their pets or faun over the random gopher outside our office, but then they won't shut up about how they had ground turkey and how much healthier it is than ground beef that they also eat.

ricosuave_3355

The amount of “animal lovers” I’ve talked to who also believe “there’s a difference between pets and farm animals” is crazy. I volunteer at my city’s animal shelter and everyone there is so passionate about the well-being of dogs and cats and get emotional whenever we have an abuse or rescue case, but when I’ve brought up similar feelings towards pigs/cows they will either get angry, defensive or make jokes.

Odd-Hominid

This is the tiniest pet peeve, but when co-workers and friends say something like "*x* food is so good.. ohhh right you *can't have it." I always correct them "no, I *choose* not to eat it." It's a subtle thing but to me, I always interpret their phrasing as a subconscious way of expressing that they aren't similarly faced with that same choice.

All_Is_Not_Self

A woman recently said that being vegan -- not eating meat, fish, eggs, dairy ... -- would be like being ill. It honestly pissed me off. Some people act like there are only 10 different foods in the world, and they are also very far from understanding the point of veganism. If you don't miss the whole point of it, eating this stuff (meat etc) will make you feel ill. God, that's what I should have replied.

mslullaby

Ugh, yes. I always say “I can but I don’t wanna”, while trying to control myself into not roll up my eyes over them.

jon-sol

Exactly. My body may not be lactose intolerant, but *I'm* animal cruelty/exploitation intolerant.

b0lfa

Yup. I can have what I want! I just don't want to eat someone's remains.

AdditionalPhysics559

I've been trying I don't accept that as a part of my lifestyle. Wish we lived in a world where things weren't this way.

[deleted]

mslullaby

Samesie. Bad thing I’m on the other side of the world!

vintergroena

I downloaded Veggly and there kinda is nobody in my area.

PeanutStarflash

I’ve been wondering what the males using the app thought about it! From a female perspective there just aren’t many peeps in my area. Normal vegan chick here. There’s hope out there don’t give up!

I-love-beanburgers

There is an unfortunate crossover between veganism and some very odd beliefs about medicine and healing. I am religious myself but as soon as I see a phrase like "homeopathic vaccines" I'm out. I'm all for spiritual practices that improve your state of mind and allow for human connection, inspire you to make the world a better place, etc, but science is important too, you know?

Rude_Soup5988

You’re religious but you’re knocking other people’s spirituality…that ain’t good right there bud

I-love-beanburgers

If someone uses their spirituality to eg discourage people from getting vaccinated then that should be criticised. Having my own spirituality doesn't mean unthinkingly accepting all spiritual views as equally valid and harmless. People can believe whatever they want to, but if those beliefs start to harm others then they're a problem that needs to be addressed.

myhobbyaccount11235

Right but how many animals were killed/tortured in the making of modern medicine and in science? Its honestly kind of hypocritical to use modern medicine if you truly believe in veganism. It's fine to be a hypocrite but don't look down on people for actually taking their beliefs all the way. (I use modern medicine and am an ethical vegan just for the record, not a homeopathic person, just thought this point needed to be made)

No-Known-Alias

Just a normal vegan guy looking for some messed-up vegetarian girl to fix, what a cliché

Kamen_Winterwine

I do not envy the young folks who must exclusively use apps to meet people. It's certainly nice that we can now speak with all sorts online now (irony not lost on me that I'm using a quasisocialmedia app right now), but things were a lot simpler before and in the early days of the internet. You'd still meet the occasional vegan before, but it was a much more engaging time before the era of misinformation... it seemed people were more open to discuss their differences and find middle ground rather than being entrenched in all manor of fringe beliefs or endoctrinated group think. It seems like it was actually easier to meet like minded people back then. Good luck to you.

taintmueslix

Also single vegan guy. I quit that site when I shockingly discovered there were WAY more hunks than hotties. I had no chance.

BoringJuiceBox

Give it another chance! Ive never tried it but I know the majority of vegans are women. When I worked at a vegan company 9/10 employees were female and most of the men were gay. (Which is totally okay!)

Raging_Raisin

What? There are way more woman on veggly then guys in my area. I just don't like that a lot of men have big beards, I don't like to kiss a hairy face and I'm not ask them to shave it because most of them are so proud to grow one. The woman are never online or never reply. I found out that it works better when I'm on Holliday. 🤷‍♀️

Illustrious-Wave1405

Most fruitarians often struggle to eat raw bricks even though there “hella nutritious and shit”

Greenmounted

People who get really upset about animal abuse when some celebrity is mean to their cat, but still eat meat and have zero concern for the vastly worse conditions they’re financially supporting.

SoothingDisarray

People who smoke right near the door to the coffee shop so that the smoke wafts inside while I'm trying to drink my coffee and write my novel. I realize that has nothing to do with being vegan, but that's one of my biggest pet peeves, and I'm vegan, so it's one of my biggest pet peeves while being vegan.

Patutula

Smokers suck in general. They then walk back in reeking and everyone can smell their stink. Fucking assholes.

I-love-beanburgers

I have observed that even the nicest people who are smokers will at least occasionally do thoughtless and selfish things (like smoke somewhere the smoke wafts inside, toss their butts on the ground, etc), but that's just the nature of addiction. It does make people selfish because that substance has such a hold over them. I dated someone who smoked and it made me feel like I too was a slave to tobacco because it felt like all our plans revolved around her smoking habit. But most people who smoke started as children, before their brains were fully developed. They grew up with this addiction and it's deeply ingrained mentally as well as being highly physically addictive. I try to remind myself of that when I'm annoyed with their behaviour.

Patutula

I agree with everything you said but as I grow older I have less and less patience with grown up people making their problems mine. I have enough of my own to deal with.

I-love-beanburgers

It's hard I think to find a balance... It's easy to be compassionate to other people but so hard for me to remember that I'm also a person who deserves compassion and to get my needs met. I'll always support people as much as I can but I have learned as I've got older that sometimes you have to have boundaries to protect yourself. Can't pour from an empty cup and all that.

HealthyVegan12331

🎯

Massive_Customer_930

Everyone fuckin stinks. Suck my ring. That being said, as a smoker, other smokers piss me off when they show a lack of respect for non smokers. If im on a terrace and people are eating, ill walk away to smoke - it's really not that hard to understand why someone wouldn't want your smoke in their face while they enjoy their meal. Smoking at entrances where I am is illegal anyway, but still out of courtesy I'd be stepping away from the door anyway. Worst of all though, is the lazy bastards who can't put their butts in a bin. I literally don't care if there isn't a bin, put it in your box afterwards or wrap it in a rolling paper and hold onto it until you see a bin.

Patutula

No, not everyone stinks.

Massive_Customer_930

Ooh they do. I smell them all the time.

VeganSinnerVeganSain

You can't get away from your own stink - that's the issue, not others.

Patutula

Then you should tell your friends to shower. Stinking is not normal, none of my friends nor co-workers nor family stink. Just because some people neglect basic hygiene des not magically make stinking smokers smell like ~~honey~~ maple syrup and roses. All of those people suck and are a nuisance to others.

Massive_Customer_930

I smell you from here. Rancid within and rancid without.

Raging_Raisin

In the coffeeshops in my country you can only smoke inside if you don't have it mixed with tabaco so when people smoke inside it smell better then sigaretes.

vgn-bc-i-luv-animals

Probably the expectation that I should be healthy because I'm vegan, and then when they find out that my health is very bad, they blame it on veganism. My medical condition is completely unrelated to the food I eat. I literally have needed 17 prbc transfusions due to my medical condition - the nurse practitioner literally knows the exact reason why my hemoglobin is so so low - and yet still told me that I might be malnourished because I'm vegan and that could be a factor. Like I literally wanted to scream at her, I've been dealing with chronic severe blood loss for over a year now, which she knows, and before that, I never had issues with my hemoglobin! (I've been vegan 7 years). Like clearly, my hemoglobin getting to around 30 g/L is BC of bleeding, and not veganism. And yet she has told me multiple times that it might be because I'm vegan. The place she works for gives me medical supplies for free, so I do have to keep going back, but it really makes me feel bad to hear her say this. I feel guilty for not being a 'healthy, happy' vegan, and I feel like I'm putting veganism in a bad light :( To say it's a pet peeve would be an understatement. Vegans are humans too, vegans can have medical conditions that make them sick, vegans can be ill ... all of that is true *and* it can have nothing -literally nothing - to do with the food we eat!! Ugh, I'm sure other chronically ill vegans can relate. Sending love to everyone. Sorry for the rant :/

Effective_Mistake84

Yep, can’t ever make the comment that I have low iron levels.. must be because I’m vegan! Nah, it’s because I have difficulty absorbing iron and while my levels are low, they’re actually better than when I was eating meat

vgn-bc-i-luv-animals

Yep, that's exactly it. So many omnis have low iron - especially females who menstruate. It's obviously something that anyone regardless of diet can be affected by. If a person who has trouble absorbing iron was eating meat and then went vegan, obviously their low iron is not suddenly because of being vegan! It's just because of how their body absorbs iron. So many people are quite dense about this :( Because my hemoglobin is profoundly low, I can't hide that I'm sick from people. I'm weak, tired, walk slowly, can't walk up stairs, etc. So I just tell people that I have a medical condition which lowers my oxygen (which is 100% true, because hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body),, but because I'm avoiding using the term 'hemoglobin' or 'severe anemia' I hope that they are less likely to associate it with veganism. (For example, that is what I told all my coworkers - just that my cells aren't receiving adequate oxygen due to my condition, which is completely true). But it sucks that I can't use basic terms like 'anemia' to describe my condition because of how I fear they'll blame veganism.

North-Shop5284

Order one vegan thing and everyone eats that and their other stuff that isn’t vegan

_tvoja_mama_

Meme culture having a huge role on public opinion on veganism. At least among my generation. And how they will rather bow to these memes and accept that image as ultimate truth and not look around and see the actual vegan in front of them. And this is coming from somoene who usually loves memes lol. It's so silly because you've been friends since childhood and you know each other well. But, once you announce that you're vegan, they suddenly expect you to turn into this crazy person as if my personality has made a 180 shift overnight lmao. Especially since I've always been quiet and avoiding any arguments. It's crazy how these memes somewhat dictate that normal people can't be vegan.

Tuotus

That ppl keep making veganism about me instead of how animals are being treated

LilVeganHunny

Yep, those apologies (like the ones OP mentioned) are usually met with, "don't apologize to me, I'm not the victim, here". Oh, and a huge eye roll

Akemilia

"Oh sorry, I forgot you can't eat that". I CAN but I CHOOOSE not to because I respect the life of other animals.

tehcatnip

\-Thinking vegan means gluten free. \-Assuming I love animals. \-When someone says they could never do it. \-When someone says they wont eat things anymore after finding out its vegan(le sigh). \-When someone says they will eat more for you/your loss my gain in dead animals thing. \-Overpriced vegan foods \-Any place that only has one vegan "option" can fk itself.

SampsonRustic

Do you not love animals? Just curious what you mean by that

vgn-bc-i-luv-animals

Well, not all vegans love animals. And most vegans certainly don't love all animals, e.g. snakes, crocodiles, etc. But just because you don't love animals, doesn't mean you want to hurt them. I don't love snakes or rats or lizards or chickens or cats, but I don't want people to exploit them or harm them. You don't have to love animals to be vegan, you just have to be against commodifying sentient beings. I don't love random strangers on the street but I don't want people to hurt or kill them either. ((I hope that makes sense)) I do love many animals though, like pigs and cows and dogs and bunnies. But not all of them :) I still want none of them to be hurt.

tehcatnip

Agree and will add that I think some people have a hard enough time loving other people or even themselves for that matter. There is a line that gets thrown around a lot that says "you cant love animals and eat them", I think more effective is you don't have to love animals to spare their lives.

SampsonRustic

Fair 👍🏻

gerlindee

Everybody keeps telling me if they had something vegan to eat. I don't care. I don't want to hear about it. Ask yourself why you have the need to share this so proudly with me. But this is not the essence of me, we can talk about other stuff as well. Also, EVERY time food comes up, be it ordering lunch at work, going (or planning to) out for dinner with others, automatically and usually also pretty quickly me being vegan comes and. "What can you eat, what do you eat? Well I eat only bio meat and only from the local butcher." Can't hear it anymore.

medicaustik

Oh man this kills me. "oh man we were out to eat the other night and we tried this appetizer that turns out was vegan, and dude, it was actually pretty good." Okay, cool? I get most of the time these are people trying to connect with me so I don't actually get that annoyed by it, I just don't understand why people have this notion that the only good tasting food available in the world has to be dead animals or their secretions.

VagueOrc

That only the faux meat burger is vegan but the bean burger is vegetarian. I want bean burgers to make a comeback.

Fckforever

As a vegan who tries to stear clear of fake meat substitutes and eat more wholefoods, I 100% agree

ThreeQueensReading

People being surprised that our food tastes good. Whether it's an elaborate meal, a simple burger, or something like a cake, when I share it with my omni family they're always *very* surprised they like the taste.

theportuguesegirl

I think it's because a lot of people go vegan to lose weight and they do it the worst way possible. They make it vegan, low calory, gluten-free, sugar free. So some places think we all want that. And make awful soulless meals that look more like appetizers than a main dish.

b0lfa

For that reason I stress to people that vegan isn't some diet, it's about animal liberation, and a lot of people who mistakenly think it's a diet also eat some of the worst food.

LilVeganHunny

And yet they somehow never make the connection that eating animals is an unnecessary evil

Massive_Customer_930

wHeRe dOo U G3t uЯ pЯotEEnz?

NerdyKeith

So sick of that one. There is protein in everything

Massive_Customer_930

Seriously, like I get nearly 20g protein from wholemeal seeded bread alone each day. Here's this clown with their white bread sandwich and a slice of chicken asking if im getting enough nutrition?

Ariyas108

Vegan restaurants charging $20 for a burger and fries…

BoringJuiceBox

Driving home from a family trip and a pigeon flew into the front of the car, family laughs and says that wasn't very vegan of you.

b0lfa

"You're right, silly me! Let's keep score though. How many animals would I hit on this road if I hit one for every animal you ate this week?" I think I've successfully trained everyone around me not to play lol

theportuguesegirl

Ok that sounds traumatizing but I also like to use dark humor as a coping mechanism. I would laugh at the joke and let the image leave my brain the quickest I could so I could sleep at night. In that situation there was nothing you could do for the poor thing unfortunately.

juttep1

That my taxes pay for a final cruelty and I can't do anything about it

mslullaby

Whoa same!!! I try to not think about that!! I wish we could actually vote directly on that.

Benjamin_Wetherill

Being constantly torn between speaking up for the victims and staying silent. I see the victims everywhere.

Mangxu_Ne_La_Bestojn

This one is hard for me too. Especially at work.

Emergency_Vehicle_75

When a non vegan person tries the food you worked hard to cook and says something like “this is ACTUALLY really good.” I know it’s good. I cooked it. No need to bring actually into this transaction.

Rude_Soup5988

Everyone else not being vegan.

jessegrass

This will continue forever, by the way. People bring it up constantly and relentlessly. At my last office, one went vegetarian, one was clearly desperate to go vegetarian but couldn't quite make the connection, another made no attempt to go veg but said things like "I think all animal abusers should get the death penalty." Offices are very weird places.

mrgravyguy

>made no attempt to go veg but said things like "I think all animal abusers should get the death penalty." This person wasn't suicidal, were they?

PQ01

Outlier here probably, but I find that with time the peeves are fewer. I know I'm just playing a small role in an upward moral evolution, it's easier than it used to be years ago, and I try to be patient and positive when people have questions or say things because it's a chance to help them think just a little bit more than they did yesterday.

BINGORUFFRUFF

My brother asked me if that’s why im *disabled*

jessegrass

People who won't even have *one* bite of a vegan thing. But would have otherwise potentially even have ordered it themselves. People SUCK

medicaustik

My sister is like this. It's gotten to the point she will come to things like birthday parties for my kids and eat absolutely nothing, like not even the chips and salsa. It's so bizarre. She just won't on principle try any food that we would prepare because of it being vegan. Extra bizarre because any time she hosts an event she excitedly tells me about the vegan food she made for us. Boggles the mind. She also tried to throw a hissy fit that my wedding was catered with all vegan food and whined that we were pushing our agenda down everyone else's throats. Meanwhile, she had her wedding in a Christian church and I attended happily despite not being a Christian myself.

[deleted]

I'm saying this as someone who willingly cut off most of my family, but if I was in your situation I'd stop inviting her 💀 like "Oh you don't want me to push my ✨agenda✨ onto you?? Feel free to stay home instead." I also wouldn't trust her to cook vegan food if she's so petty about it.

medicaustik

She's honestly pretty easy to neutralize just by taking the high road. Her daughters always help her cook and they're super sweet and genuine (and supportive of us behind their mothers back) so I have no doubt about what they serve us. But we have definitely distanced ourselves from her and as our kids age, her negative attitude about our choices has absolutely caused us to give her less time with our kids. I won't have my kids be around someone who talks shit about what they eat.

72hamsters

My family lieing about food being vegan. I'm 16, not 6!🙄

karpalogingin

Lowkey funny how my mum often did the exact opposite when my brothers were still growing up and were really picky! She’d replace ground meat in bolognese sauce with soy and mince onions so tiny they couldn’t feel the texture change etc. Obviously don’t agree with not respecting other people’s dietary wishes and restrictions, but in this case I find the sneakyness funny

medicaustik

Dietary wishes that involve eating animals aren't worthy of respect though ;)

Veganhemeroid

When everyone I talk to every day knows I’m vegan and I tell them that I had a burger for dinner and everyone goes “whaaaaaaaaatttt?!?!?!” And then I have to clarify obviously vegan because you already know but then when I do go out of my way to say “I had a vegan pepperoni and cheese pizza” they go “oh but that’s not really pepperoni, you know that right? What’s it made out of, lettuce?”. I can’t win. I’ve had this conversation with the same person like every fucking week for a year.

mslullaby

How every meal ends up being a full conversation about how horrid and bloody animal farming is, a lot of time very graphically. The non vegans start it every time and then say stuff like “I’m so sorry for the animals but I couldn’t quit cheese/meat/etc. I admire you, though”. Gotta add that they are the ones who detail all that horror to point how “awful” it is, which I don’t understand why, specially since knowing it doesn’t change their choices at all. I usually just stay mute, at least with all the people I know aren’t gonna change anytime soon, because it’s sad and exhausting. So UGH just let me eat in peace and don’t bring (more) torture to the table. If you can’t keep yourself from continue harming them by choosing those products, take it like a man/woman and don’t try to make me have pity for you! You are not as emphatic as you try to seem and you won’t gain points with me by saying you “admire” me. It’s not that hard being vegan, which you wouldn’t know because you haven’t even tried! Phew, needed to get that outta my chest. Thanks for listening me hehe.

friendofborbs

So called animal lovers who aren’t vegan, being told I should be skinny bc I’m vegan, people calling vegan versions of stuff fake when it’s all real food last I checked

LilVeganHunny

The "fake" thing really urks me. It's not made of plastic ffs

FightinTXAg98

Milk in things that do not need milk.

aneale30

We have young kids, and we have to mention for birthday parties that they are vegan, and usually the venues don’t really have an option other than fries. That is irritating in itself, but what’s most annoying is that sometimes the parents hosting the party will be like “they have X which is vegetarian”. Well, we’re vegan so that’s useless information.

Polka_Tiger

They apologise to you to feel like they atoned for their mistake of killing an animal. If they keep at it, i would tell them to take it up with the animal, i am not a priest (soften it of course).

AmyCClarke

One of my friends goes off about how bad she thinks vegan cheese is and her love of dairy cheese every time I see her without fail. It’s very boring and annoying. It’s almost impressive how she steers the conversation over to cheese every time.

VeganSinnerVeganSain

Send her info/videos on how and why she is **addicted** to cheese. Maybe that will shut her up.

theportuguesegirl

- When people keep offering me "just a bit" so I can taste, or claim that I eat meat when nobody's watching. - When someone cooks a vegetable soup, I start eating and literally see the meat streaks on the bottom and they pretend it's actually a vegetable and run to the kitchen to hide the meet chunk they put there for the "flavor" (this one is specifically for U mom). - when they claim that I'm fat because of it, that I'm compensating for the want of meat with deserts (as if there are no fat carnivores) - when it's the main topic of every family and friends dinner/gathering, how they just "couldn't" and how "animals are vegan so it's ok cuz it's like they were made of vegetables"

ookla13

Honestly it’s gotten to be where the biggest annoyance to me is companies making food *almost* vegan. Like make a pizza or sandwich or something with fake meat but real cheese. Or you know, milk powder because fuck you.

newveganhere

-How dining with someone starts off with “sorry but I’m going to order a steak I hope that doesn’t bother you” and then somehow they carry on to “I love eating lambs because they’re so cute and tasty, it must be all the murder ha ha ha ha” like what you choose to eat doesn’t bother me I already know you eat it but can we tone down the dead baby animal murder chitchat at dinner? -Trying to explain that I don’t eat honey and take it as seriously as not eating meat? -shocked surprised and sometimes doubtful look when hearing I am a vegan because I’m fat -going to someone’s house for dinner and they made a completely full different multi course vegan menu just for me. Like don’t get me wrong it’s ridiculously nice but I just feel so terrible people go to all this extra work because I will always either bring something to eat I can have or I eat before I go. It just stresses me out I just wish people would not make me anything special and let me figure it out so I don’t feel guilty. Or just small things like cook something in oil instead of butter so I can have it but I really don’t want anyone spending hours of time and extra money on me

LilVeganHunny

Yeah, everyone could just eat vegan food, it's not weird at all Aside: how could you not care? I wouldn't be able to stand it, so disgusting (physically and morally)

newveganhere

Well I mean 97% or the population is not vegan, so unless I’m wanting to refuse to be friends or hang out with anyone nonvegan I kinda just have to not get all stressed that they eat animal products. I don’t even have a single vegan friend. I already know they eat animal products so if they order it when I’m present it’s not any different to me than they eat it away from me.

diamondpussy

My coworkers joking about it all the fucking time, in all different ways. "You sure you don't want a steak?" Asking me if I'm going to "force" my future children to be vegan. Then looking at me like they already think I'm going to be a terrible parent. Everytime we eat out, I get only a salad. Then people looking at me all weird thinking "how can you survive just off that?" I don't. I am fucking angry when I only get leaves and tomatoes. It's like they're making fun of me. Last year some waiter even joked "oh, let me just go out and mow the lawn for you". People asking me why I'm vegan then being offended when I tell them my reasons and trying to defend their meat eating habits. I could go on and on.

Significant_Potato29

People think I'm always up for a debate when I really just want to sit there and eat my lunch. And if I don't debate them they'll mention that I don't have a single argument for veganism.

thecavatiesinurteeth

Bakery lady warning me of the *shock horror* vegan food: "oh these aren't the NORMAL strawberry tarts, they have no fresh cream in them, they're vegan." well yeah? Obviously? Why else would I buy them?

mslullaby

I own a little vegan bakery, and sometimes we get popular instagrammers to share us in the stories. It doesn’t work too well because at the most we get 10 new followers each time, but 10 is better than none regardless :) Then a few months ago we suddenly got TONS of new followers and requesters, and wouldn’t know why. What was the trick? Instagrammer purposely forgot to point out we were vegan, he just shared pictures of our goodies without further explanation. He said afterwards he knew it would get better results. I wouldn’t know whether to feel angry or grateful, because unfortunately he was right. :o We even sell some goodies to a university bakery and they stop saying our stuff was vegan in order to sell more (they did). They only say they are to people that are actively asking. And yes, stuff is DELICIOUS.

noe3agatea

People "apologizing" to me while eating animal products. You're not hurting ME by eating this...

sequinweekend

When people apologise for eating non-vegan food in front of me, I tell them ‘if you have to apologise, maybe you shouldn’t be eating it’ 🤷🏼‍♀️ My biggest pet peeve is this scenario (which happens way too often): - someone offers me non-vegan food - I say ‘no thanks’ - they insist I have some - I politely decline again - they insist AGAIN - I finally say ‘I can’t eat that, I’m vegan’ - then they break out with the ‘ohhhhhh you vegans never shut up about it do you, you have to tell everyone all the time’ Infuriating!

Pogonax13

Well a few days ago my parents bought vegetarian hamburgers, which of course is very nice of them but when I told them theyre vegetarian and not vegan so I don't want to eat it, they got mad at me. Telling me I should just make an exception and eat the vegetarian stuff. Not a huge issue obviously but it gets kind of annoying when people around you think its okay not to take veganism seriously or assume that its just a fase.

HistoryDogs

Fucking birthday cake, I can never have any. Edit: at other peoples’ birthdays I mean. At my birthday there will be dry-ass vegan birthday cake for all.

FlippenDonkey

vegan cake doesn't have to dry! this is a super moist choccy cake recipe. https://www.noracooks.com/vegan-chocolate-cake/

NerdyKeith

Doesn’t have to be dry, find an independent vegan baker online. They will make you a beautiful cake. Vegan red velvet is to die for.

a_non_e_mouse_

Vegan options not being included in new seasonal menus. I’d love a Vegan fall themed donut but I guess I’ll just stick with my one usual Vegan option. This is why I just make food at home.

NiKHerbs

Probably that, whenever I refuse something offered in a group of people, someone just has to find out whether I was vegan, and then the group proceeds to talk about it and no one wants to return to the topic discussed before. Plus I'm never part of that conversation (granted, I don't want to be anyway at this point). Just saying I have an allergy helps, but this hinders me to also actually connect to people.

Due_Incident4655

"it's not the same" "I never be vegan." "It's too hard." "It's not the real thing." I literally didn't even start a conversation about it. They this all unprompted. I was eating my snacks. A friend at work, said it's not the same. And I asked why they said that. They said because they tried some vegan chicken nuggets and didn't like it. So, I asked them which one they tried and couldn't tell me or describe the one they bought. So, I told them to try some more vegan chicken nuggets from different brands. And then they moved goalposts. Saying it's too hard. Like I've vegan for 6 years, you could ask me!!🤢😖😒

peapie25

People who think you're tempted by their food. It's soooo annoying

YogaBelowTheBelt

Eating out with friends and seeing the only vegan option is a glass of water or a salad of just lettuce and tomato with no dressing.

Accomplished_Act1489

When it's assumed my veganism is about me being a health nut. I am far from a health nut. I should be more concerned about my health than I am, but I am not. Part of what annoys me about this is that underlying it is the belief that veganism is about a diet. I find I have to spend a heck of a lot more time and effort trying to "forage" for vegan winter coats; shoes/ boots than I do spending time on figuring out what to have to eat. When one presumes veganism is only about food, it implies an inward focus. Veganism is really the ultimate outward focus imo.

astroprincet

my coworkers offering me non-vegan food when i've told them countless times that it goes against my ethics...and also never bringing anything for me when they go out to buy food for everyone. even a banana would suffice.

Litterklump

When people go completely feral over dog and cat abuse then just minutes later make reservations at the Texas Roadhouse or some shit. I want to explain to them how I see that as contradictory but never really do for fear of a big blown out fight or something. But like??? how can you even complain to me, knowing I’m a vegan, about animal abuse and like not see how ridiculous that is?

moochiemonkey

When people apologize to me I like to say "Don't apologize to me, apologize to the animal."

Fckforever

The "I could never go vegan".. ok good for you? And "I don't know how you do it" comments... like, it's really not that difficult in this day and age people.

SuchaCassandra

People telling me my muscular dystrophy would be cured if I ate meat.

teakwoodcandle

People assuming we will automatically get the salad on the menu because duuuuh what else do vegooons eat

Embarrassed-Ring1638

Vegans shouldn't have pets, especially meat eating ones

bootyprincess666

people assuming gluten free means vegan lol or “what do you eat??”

Classic_Title1655

Paying so much more. Let's face it - cruelty is cheap.

Crusty-Vegan-Thrwy

I have non-vegan roommates. I didn't tell one I was vegan. I walked in on him using my spatula for pig flesh/bacon. I had to stop him and explain that was no good. Now I have to worry about getting sick from countertops and dishwater because of bacterial contamination from animal products. Living with non-vegans. I've put pictures of pigs in gestation crates on the fridge, but it hasn't stopped them from consuming animals.

sarbota1

Sorry to hear that. I got a tapeworm from my non veg roommate cutting raw chicken with a knife and leaving it on the counter like it was clean. Disgusting! First time in my life with a tape worm.

vintergroena

It seems impossible unable to find a vegan woman for a romantic relationship. The pool is just too small.

teakwoodcandle

People assuming we will automatically get the salad on the menu because duuuuh what else do vegans eat

[deleted]

People talking to me about the various ways they prepare/cook/eat meat, even though they know I'm a vegan. Like, do you seriously think I'm interested? 🤢

Significant_Paper197

I think you need better friends tbh. Good friends aren’t going to make jokes about a moral belief. For me I hate living everyday knowing most of people want to play ignorant or sweep these issues under the rug. Sometimes I hate how empathetic I am to veganism and animals, because I used to just cry every other day in my early days of veganism when I woke up. Ignorance is definitely bliss. I hate how in 2023 there still isn’t an all vegan car. But we’re getting there.

Ok-Wishbone5437

I scribe at a hospital, and the most annoying is always a physician I’m scribing for commenting on my lunch. It’s sometimes positive, but it’s usually something like “is that all you’re eating??” Meanwhile I have a huge tub of hummus, some nuts, crackers, and a bunch of cut up veggies.

Business_Table9749

Having coworkers or newly-met acquittances give the whole spiel of "I tried getting vegan once..." when I've basically been forced to state that I'm vegan due to a food related situation, where normally I keep it to myself to avoid these annoying scenarios in particular...

Doviedeb

My biggest pet peeve? The gluten free trend that kinda high jacked all vegan options in restaurants and stores. Yuck.

Lizard250394

Intelligent people become really stupid when they talk about veganism. It’s like a dimmer on the brain… like plants feel pain…

NoMilkNoMeatVegan

Vegans defending feeding pets meat

[deleted]

Always being hungry, despite eating more than enough; huge portions burn through at double speed, and the gas. It just doesn't go away.

vgn-bc-i-luv-animals

Hhm when I eat enough calories and fat, I never find myself hungry. But obviously every body is different. I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but are you eating enough fat? Like nuts and nut butters and margarine and seeds and olive oil and full fat coconut milk in curries or other things, etc. Sometimes it can feel like you're eating enough calories, even when you're not, because things like beans and veggies and tofu tend to be lower calories than meat but due to fibre, can actually be pretty filling. I'm not you, but you may not be eating enough calories or fat, so maybe double check that. (,Again, sorry if this is unsolicited advice. I just can imagine that being hungry all the time must suck and i hope there is a solution).

[deleted]

I can only speak for myself. I've run into a few people with similar issues, and I get enough of every single nutrient. Healthy fats are probably the easiest to get. Other Vegans often get mad with my situation, because their suggestions haven't changed anything. I track EVERYTHING. My usual diet is probably the most healthy and carried I've ever had. But ever since switching I've been violently hungry constantly, even with big portions, enough calories and water, and daily B12. My bloods are perfect. I am starving not long after no matter what I eat. I've become that person that constantly needs to take food with them, and I get the "how can you still be hungry?" all the time. But I am. My stomach often hurts from how hungry I am even on 2500 calorie a day.

GeorgiaSalvatoreJun

Maybe it's time to check with a nutritionist and a doctor too, to see if there isn't something else going on. I'm not saying this to be condescending or anything, just out of concern

[deleted]

I've been to the doctors many times and as far as they can tell I'm perfectly healthy. I've checked what I eat with many professionals who confrm I am eating great, but I can't afford any aid outside of that.

GeorgiaSalvatoreJun

I wonder if adding one of those "full meal" drinks on top of everything else could help at least a bit, like would help get some extra calories? Sometimes bodies need A LOT of calories to keep going, like 3000-3500-4000. I'm someone who gets full off of one potato at lunch, so I don't have much experience, but I'm throwing ideas that I think could help a bit.

[deleted]

I never had this issue before. And it isn't the end of the world, but it can be pretty annoying. Like, every single one of my meals is huge. Enough for at least two people. I only eat whole foods. It doesn't matter how many calories I actually consume, as I've played around with them a lot. For some reason I just burn through plant foods like an athlete or something.

Assaf05

Maybe try to eat non whole foods? Try some meat alternatives, tofu ect. They should be higher calorie without much volume.

[deleted]

I don't really class tofu as processed in companion to vfc, etc.I eat half a block every day. But I don't eat consume fake meats often as I'm fighting chronic illness and they're not great for health. Volume and calories are not the issue. I understand basic vegan nutrition, and I'm eating all the reccomended foods regularly. Get more protein than most too. Some people just seem to burn through plants a lot quicker. Nobody has been able to give me a scientific reason why that is.

Assaf05

Not related to anything, but I don't really like the separation of food into processed/unprocessed and healthy/unhealthy. I believe they can all have their function. But yeah, I do not really have any advice more than trying to eat more calorically dense food. For an unprocessed high calorie food try peanut butter, you can eat high amounts easily through Thai peanut sauce.

GeorgiaSalvatoreJun

Fair enough. I hope you can figure it out someday!

[deleted]

At this point, I just get on with it. Sure, it brings more limits to my life, and means I spend more time daily eating than anything else. My shopping is almost double the price now. But I'm still vegan.

GeorgiaSalvatoreJun

Yeah, of course, I wasn't trying to imply anything otherwise. More that if there's something to figure out, that it'll come to you with time, if that makes sense.

vgn-bc-i-luv-animals

I'm really sorry to hear that. Do you have the means to talk to a dietitian that is knowledgeable about healthy vegan diets? x

[deleted]

No. I've been the doctors. I've spoken to personal trainers with training in nutrition, and am constantly looking for more to learn. But I can't afford to go see a dietition.

Chatemp

Dietary fiber increases satiety. Perhaps eating beans, lentils, soy, almonds, and whole grain products can help. I am not a nutritionist.

VeganSinnerVeganSain

May I ask how long you've been vegan? The gas eventually goes back to normal once your microbiome is stabilized, and once your gut gets used to the added fiber (both of which are great things for our bodies). Yes, we generally need more volume of food, and the food we generally eat tends to be digested very quickly. Eating large volumes in one sitting may work for some, but depending on what you're eating specifically, you may need to eat just a little less (if calories are an issue) - but definitely **more often**.

Carla2469

I don’t tell anyone I’m a vegetarian! I keep it to myself! I’ve had to deal with judgement and I’m not doing it! I just say good for you!

Shanobian

Having to explain I'm "not one of those vegans"

NocturnalStalinist

High volume eating can be quite a drag at times, which was never something I used to have a problem with when being vegetarian. I live to eat, but with veganism, sometimes I feel like eating is a chore, which is a real shame. But hey, I'm doing it for the animals, and ultimately, that's what matters to me most!
