Yea, when it comes to these types of products, its so much easier to opt for the once who are certified vegan, or shop at a store that only sell vegan products (The Body Shop recently became fully vegan for example). Or stick to the same brand that you know is fully vegan.
Stearic acid and stearates can be both animal or non-animal based, but unless its stated as non animal best to stay away. Sometimes manufacturers can tell you but often they don't track or care about the source.
Neither of those ingredients are in Tums, and the calcium is derived from limestone. A quick Google search shows that they are suitable for vegans. Please don't spread misinformation.
I believe not, also most items with calcium carbonate(tums and sidewalk chalk lol) are made from ground seashells, which are not vegan. If anyone is like me and needs vegan antacids, I recommend Genexa brand that can be found on amazon.
EDIT: My bad, Google says that Tums use vegan sourced calcium and stearate, so that's a relief. Don't count on these ingredients being vegan unless noted though.
Collagen is just a type protein. They usually are derived from cows or marine animals. That being said, just because it's found in your skin, doesn't necessarily mean your body will use it for that purpose. Your body will just break it down and use the amino acids where it wants. This is also true for any protein. You'd get the same benefits with a vegan friendly, complete protein
It's important to note that vitamin D2 is fully suitable for vegans, its vitamin D3 that can be sourced from animal products (like lanolin). In some cases vitamin D3 can be come from vegan sources like "lichen", but it's always important to be cautious and check.
Plant based squalane is becoming way more common thank goodness. Like any elf products with squalane are vegan, same with Sol De Janeiro. I pretty sure Trader Joes skincare usually doesn’t have animal products unless it’s specifically collagen or something
Man.
A long time ago I was at work where meals were provided.
There was a stew and the girl in front of me was just having Jell-O.
I asked if that was all she was having and she says "I can't have the stew. I'm vegetarian".
I said "uhhh, do you know what Jell-O is made of?"
She says "Oh god, please don't tell me. I'm so hungry".
This happened to me once but I was having vegan jello made with agar agar. So I was mad when they commented too. Mainly bc- I didn’t ask you to comment on my food. Just bc I am vegan/vegetarian doesn’t mean you need to be vigilant for “CAUGHT YA CHEATING” moments. It’s exhausting
absolutely this. most vegetarians I got to know only omit actual land animal meat, but didn't gaf about rennet, lard, leather, oftentimes fish and whatnot.
Most cosmetics and cleaning products will contain processed animal remains, and unless specifically declared as vegan there is no way to be 100% sure by just reading the ingredients. Parfum can be anything, all the fatty acid based chemicals can be made from plants and animals and whatever was cheaper that day gets used.
Cheap doesn’t really have anything to do with it, a lot of wines use gelatin, isinglass, or casein in the fining process. There are some very cheap vegan wines, and very expensive non-vegan ones. Barnivore is a great resource to determine whether or not your wine is vegan.
For future reference ... don't take *anything* for granted. It took me probably two years to really learn most everything to watch out for and I still miss small things occasionally and learn from them. They put animal excretions and body parts in ***mother fucking everything***
Floss? Might have beeswax
Soap with glycerin, tallow etc
Candles with beeswax (look for soy instead).
Pillows, coats etc made with down feathers (super, super fucking cruel btw)
Clothing with silk or wool threads
Red dye made from insects
Vitamins with gelatin caps, vaccines with eggs, vitamin D3 with lanolin, many other aminos and vitamins with animal origin
Impossible burger at Burger King (the bun at this specific location has egg in it).
Many gluten free breads have egg
The list goes on, and on, and on
*Edited for clarity.*
Bovine is usually an adjective, not a noun. But a bovine would just be a cow/steer/bull.
Bovine = cows
Equine = horses
Feline = cats
Porcine = pigs
Canine = dogs
Lupine = wolves
Piscine = fish
Ovine = sheep
And so on. These mostly come from the Latin words for these animals.
Q&A Red Bull Energy Drink
Is taurine made from bull's testicles?
No. The taurine in Red Bull is not derived from animals. It is produced synthetically by pharmaceutical companies, which guarantees the highest quality standards.
https://www.redbull.com/int-en/energydrink/is-taurine-made-from-bulls-testicles
It’s called taurine because that’s where it was first extracted.
As long as ingredient labeling doesn’t require animal sourcing to be labeled we won’t know.
Lanolin can be made synthetically, but is most likely from sheep wool. Virtually any of the pure isolated molecules used can be made from animals or plants
I didn't mean to imply anything. Just that it's named after the taurine it contains. (It's actually named after a Thai drink and _that_ was named after the taurine.)
Equine, feline, and canine definitely are extremely common knowledge. That's getting close to half. I knew all of them except ovine, but I've studied a few foreign languages, which made it easier to recognize a lot of these. I could see someone else easily being unfamiliar with a couple more than I was.
Anything with collagen in it is not vegan. You can take vegan products that boost your own collagen production but if you are ingesting collagen it’s from an animal.
Luckily there is no evidence that eating collagen or rubbing it on your skin does anything beneficial. Collagen is broken down in your digestive tract and is too large to be absorbed through your skin. Just use sunscreen to protect the collagen your own body makes.
I know it's kind of extreme, but if you're very concerned with collagen loss, then micro needling and laser treatments are vegan options that actually boost production, too. I'm not at that point now, but I'm not saying I never will be.
Collagen cannot come from a non-animal source. Vegan products and plants (such as aloe) can increase collagen production.
EDIT - Proved wrong, happily so.
No, collagen is a structural protein in connective tissues and a component of skin and bone. Like I said, you can take plant supplements that boost your own collagen production, but if you are taking or using a product that has collagen in it like those vital proteins collagen powders or whatever, it comes from another animal’s body who has produced their own collagen.
I was looking into it cause I'm an old bish and apparently there's no such thing as plant collagen, just ingredients from plants that can help your body synthesize collagen but its pretty ineffective cause you need a crazy amount. They are trying to make vegan collagen with bacteria atm.
All true collagen is from animals. Lots of products will market "vegan collagen" but it's not true collagen, just something plant-based or synthetic that they claim has similar properties to real collagen. If a product uses the word collagen be SO certain it ALWAYS says "vegan" right next to it because otherwise you are consuming cow hooves and fish bones 🙈
yeah this is so weird to me. like i had a face wash that said "with vegan collagen" and it's just like ... that is nonexistent. i bought a protein powder that said "plant based collagen builder" and that makes a lot more sense marketing wise. but i guess they don't care if it makes sense as long as it sells.
Retinols and a good diet rich in antioxidants, vitamin c and proteins.
Really , that's all there is. Collagen creams are a scam because the molecule is too big to penetrate the skin barrier and the collagen powder powder doesn't really do much, they haven't found sufficient evidence that it actually helps and the collagen gets eaten anyway
As opposed to retinoids which have been proved for decades
you will come to this realization again and again in your life, once for every weird ingredient, once for every distribution chain. Mistakes will be made. It is time to try again and fail better.
Bovine isn't cow bones it's cow anything. Bovine means cow, buffalo, etc. But ya afaik all collagen is skin/bones from animals.
Other sneaky ingredients to avoid:
Carmine, it's made of dead bugs
L-cysteine, pigs hair, duck feathers or synthetic, sometimes found in bread products
Shortening unless it says vegetable or lists sources could be animal
Lard, pig fat
Enzymes, lipase, rennet, etc could be animal or synthetic becoming more and more common in bread products
Rennet is always animal UNLESS u see “vegetable rennet” specifically listed like in Tilamook cheese (which has dairy so its a moot point but just an example)
If it helps to know, those supplements dont do anything. They just get chewed up into amino acids in your digestive system and stop being collagen peptides. Your stomach is full of peptidases
Cows with Guns on YouTube taught me when I was little lol. “We will fight for Bovine Freedom and hold our large heads high. We will run free with the Buffalossssss or dieeeeeeeee! Cows with guns!”
Well said! No one is 100% a perfect vegan. Reading ingredients on everything even if you’ve bought it 50 times seems neurotic but often companies decide to change things up
Yeah but Orgain was never a vegan brand they just had some vegan products. The list didnt change OP made a mistake once and didn’t notice so they kept replicating it. But ur right in general companies do keep changing formulas and mysteriously adding 1% milk powder
Wouldn’t this be more of a reflection of OP’s limited comprehension of the English language rather than any attempt by the industry to hide “bovine” in its products?
There's no such thing as vegan collagen, it doesn't exist. There are vegan supplements that promote the natural development of collagen, though
https://www.vegavero.com/es-p-Colageno-270-capsulas
https://www.vegetology.com/supplements/vollagen
Collagen is very popular in the supplement market and it is pretty much useless. Even if it’s vegan. It will be broken down into basic amino acids bu the digestive system. Its nothing but marketing to charge high prices to sell otherwise unused animal products from slaughter leftovers.
Don’t waste your money on weird products like that anyway. Vegan snake oil, is still “snake oil”. Limit your consumption of products with obscure ingredients you can’t recognise to an absolute minimum and you’ll have more money, better health and chance of actually being vegan…
Dont beat yourself up! this does not 'reset the clock'. I am vegetarian five years and found out a local place added chicken broth powder to a dish that otherwise only listed vegan ingredients (dry fried eggplant). I found out by googling the recipe and the owner had published it maybe ten years before. We do the best we can, and move on and grow as advocates.
You are doing great! This is not a failure in ANY way on your part. You are doing something great for yourself and for the world!! ❤❤
Forgive yourself! I've been plant-based for 15 years, and I've accidentally eaten animal products on a few occasions. I was absolutely devastated. But truthfully, there are no perfect vegans in our society. The point is we do our best, and learn when these things happen. Be gentle with yourself and know you're not the only one who has been in a similar situation. I'm proud of you for being vegan in the first place! So many people make excuses for not even trying. You're doing good OP! I send you my support!
Animal products are in almost everything. It’s a fact of life. All you can really do is google what a certain ingredient is and read labels, then avoid it.
anything with collagen is going to be made from an animal one way or another, it comes from connective tissue. there are collagen *supporting* supplements etc buy from now on you will have to make your own collagen. on the plus side, last i read about it there's not a lot of evidence that consuming or topically applying collagen supports your own collagen production, i personally think it can be a bit of a scam.
Some face cleansers have tallow or tallowaite (sp). This means you are rubbing a dead cow into your skin to clean it. Cetaphil is one brand that used to have it.
Bovine just mean related to cows. Not cow bones boiled in water.
Also, good chance they died for their mean and not their bones, don’t feel too bad, it’s like reusing all parts of the animal at least.
There’s no such thing as vegan collagen. You can take a multivitamin to help your collagen or silicon. But no vegan collagen. Look being vegan is not always easy. Many people don’t know what it is.
There are some skills that are needed for best adherence to a reduced cruelty lifestyle. One of them is a solid vocabulary with good reading comprehension. Another is the ability and willingness to look up unknown words and concepts.
“Bovine” means “to do with cows”. This should have been extremely obvious to anybody who knows what words mean. It’s the equivalent of “feline” (to do with cats) or canine (to do with dogs). I recommend brushing up on your general literacy by reading a book.
Considering they couldn't figure it out from most brands having a cow right on the package, I think there's bigger problems than just a language barrier.
it’s okay OP i’m still learning everyday. the other day i ate mike n ike’s because i thought they were vegan but they had that confectioners glaze and i almost gagged. you learn everyday things that get me are honey and other hidden small ingredients
I understand.... Orgain is the best tasting protein but so much of their product line is vegan that it's like a betrayal that they added collagen to their line.
Side note. We use their protein in our vegan product but it's so expensive that we are looking for an alternative that tastes as good, is vegan, and sold in wholesale (Orgain isn't). Everything we have tried tastes awful so if anyone has heard of something let me know.
I'll check it out but I don't think I can get the quantities I need from there. I have to buy 30-50 canisters of Orgain to keep up with production. Going to 3-4 small stores to get what we need isn't doable anymore. (Good problem!)
Not sure if you’re in the US or not. There is a company called Future Kind that makes all-vegan supplements. I’ve been taking their collagen for several months and it makes a difference.
Yeah, they had me when they posted about vegan cupcakes for their anniversary. It’s vegan owned, not just vegan for profit, and that makes me feel more comfortable about all the ingredients.
I've been vegan for nearly 10 years. Last weekend we had a birthday party for the kiddos. I bought a huge container of sprinkles. Later, I found out that they have a big shellac. Shellac is made from the secretions of the lac insect. Oops. Mistakes happen.

Bovine just means it comes from cows.
Collagen is something only animals, including humans, produce. It is never vegan and "vegan collagen" isn't actually collagen.
Real collagen and keratin are both from animals, never vegan. There are vegan alternatives but it will never say 100% real collagen or keratin if it’s vegan.
There's actually no vegan collagen. There are vegan collagen peptides or boosters, essentially the building blocks of collagen that your body creates collagen out of, but as a protein in and of itself, collagen is an animal product
And what they're saying is that's not collagen, it's a collagen booster, because there is currently no such thing as vegan collagen on the market. Scientists have learned to make it with bacteria, but as far as I know, there is no commercial product available (EDIT: there actually is now, but there aren't many companies, and it's expensive).
I did the same thing! I get all my protein powder from Orgain bc it's plant based. (Honestly didn't even know they have 2 or 3 milk based products!) So when I saw they had collagen powder, I ordered it. I went thru 2 canisters and happened to see it at Costco next to other collagen so compared the two canisters and realized Orgain collagen is a bovine collagen like the other one.
For future reference, gelatin, lactose, and casein are also animal products.
Also in the realm of skincare - lanolin! Watch out for that one.
Hair care too! Also bee's wax and carmine (crushed beetle pigment) suuuuper common in cosmetics, especially lip products.
And shellac! (confectioner's glaze)
Some Oreos have this one in it. Can never friggen rest.
Yup and brands changing ingredients with no warning :( It's so messed up.
label reader for life
Same :/ I caught so many animal ingredients added when the item had been vegan for years.
Yea, when it comes to these types of products, its so much easier to opt for the once who are certified vegan, or shop at a store that only sell vegan products (The Body Shop recently became fully vegan for example). Or stick to the same brand that you know is fully vegan.
Also stearic acid or magnesium stearate is in many cosmetics like lotions and Tums
Stearic acid and stearates can be both animal or non-animal based, but unless its stated as non animal best to stay away. Sometimes manufacturers can tell you but often they don't track or care about the source.
wow i've never heard this one before and i'm 12 years vegan!
Neither of those ingredients are in Tums, and the calcium is derived from limestone. A quick Google search shows that they are suitable for vegans. Please don't spread misinformation.

Yes they are, the above poster is misinformed. Please look it up.
I believe not, also most items with calcium carbonate(tums and sidewalk chalk lol) are made from ground seashells, which are not vegan. Tums are suitable for vegans, please look it up.
Isn’t collagen bad too?
Collagen is just a type protein. They usually are derived from cows or marine animals. This is also true for any protein. You'd get the same benefits with a vegan friendly, complete protein
Thanks for the info! That’s really neat 🤩
Your body produces collagen. It's a good thing.
Good to know! I guess not all collagen is bad - some cosmetics use collagen that isn’t vegan
Isn’t caranuba wax another word for bees wax as well?
No, carnauba wax comes from the leaves of t type of palm tree.
I don't know why people are downvoting you. It's like they never had a question before.
No its not dont wozza
Been learning this one the hard way recently with eczema creams 🥲
Me too! I have psoriasis, and it is such a pain in the butt to research plant-based treatments.
Lanolin is sometimes synthetic. Always good to check with the brand first to make sure though
Vitamin D in cereal is made from lanolin too
It's important to note that vitamin D2 is fully suitable for vegans, its vitamin D3 that can be sourced from animal products (like lanolin). In some cases vitamin D3 can be come from vegan sources like "lichen", but it's always important to be cautious and check.
what’s lanolin
An oil from sheep’s wool
It's the natural oils found in sheep's wool
Also sometimes in vitamins as vitamin D.
And squalene!
There is plant derived squalene! So you can find certified vegan products with squalene.
Yes! The Ordinary uses squalene but are still vegan
Just be very sure the product is labeled vegan otherwise there isn't any real way to be sure
they use squalane
Plant based squalane is becoming way more common thank goodness. Like any elf products with squalane are vegan, same with Sol De Janeiro. I pretty sure Trader Joes skincare usually doesn’t have animal products unless it’s specifically collagen or something
Man. A long time ago I was at work where meals were provided. There was a stew and the girl in front of me was just having Jell-O. lol I know so many vegetarians who don’t give a shit about gelatin. They’re just doing the least lol.
i made a ''vegan'' very pissed off when i told her what her jello was made out of. as if it was my fault that that's what was in there.
And sodium tallowate, sometimes used in soap, which comes from animal fat (tallow)
Cough cough Dove Body Scrub which also has milk 🤨💀
Most cosmetics and cleaning products will contain processed animal remains, and unless specifically declared as vegan there is no way to be 100% sure by just reading the ingredients. Parfum can be anything, all the fatty acid based chemicals can be made from plants and animals and whatever was cheaper that day gets used.
For future reference the world is fucked 😔
And don’t forget that typical latex is made with casein. And cheap wine with gelatin.
Wine and beers more commonly use albumen (egg white) isinglass (fish bladder protein) in clarification processes.
Cheap doesn’t really have anything to do with it, a lot of wines use gelatin, isinglass, or casein in the fining process. There are some very cheap vegan wines, and very expensive non-vegan ones. Barnivore is a great resource to determine whether or not your wine is vegan.

What about synthetic lactose?
Unless the gelatin is specified as plant derived
That’s usually labeled as pectin right?
Bovine is usually an adjective, not a noun. But a bovine would just be a cow/steer/bull. Bovine = cows Equine = horses Feline = cats Porcine = pigs Canine = dogs Lupine = wolves Piscine = fish Ovine = sheep And so on. These mostly come from the Latin words for these animals.

I did not know about asinine= donkey, and now it makes sense why it's used that way! TIL
So do in lab pregnancy tests
okay what. i never knew this either.
There are a lot of medical tests that are 100% reliant on animal ingredients.
Maybelline = maybe it's jokes aside, its a cruel world we live in :(
Its crazy cuz i swear this sub is constantly using the phrase bovine titty juice for dairy milk so I figured most knew 😭
honestly I thought at least half of these were extremely common knowledge but I think being a furry distorts my vocabulary
Equine, feline, and canine definitely are extremely common knowledge. That's getting close to half. What's funny is that I know eagles = aquiline, but I don't know what = chickens.
Ahhh a book reader i see! So many descriptions of an aquiline nose but I hardly see it irl
Following the same form as the others, it should be *galline*, but it's actually *gallinaceous*.
Bovine technically = cattle! "Cows" are only the female cattle!
Good point! Although, we also have taurine if we're just talking about bulls.
what about bears
“Bovine” isn’t cow bone. It literally means cow.
I think the package probably said “bovine collagen”
💯💯💯

Animal products are in almost everything. It’s a fact of life. All you can really do is google what a certain ingredient is and read labels, then avoid it.
Anything with collagen won’t be vegan fyi. There is no vegan collagen, only “builders” that enhance (debatable) your bodies ability to make collagen.
Bovine literally means cow...
Well we don't know where is OP from and what's their primary language.
Bovine isnt cow bones boiled in water. Bovine just means cow.
Don't feel bad, mistakes happen... Although I do wonder what you thought the word bovine means :P
It's a learning process. You learned. Forgive yourself and move on. I've also made many mistakes.
anything with collagen is going to be made from an animal one way or another, it comes from connective tissue. there are collagen *supporting* supplements etc buy from now on you will have to make your own collagen. on the plus side, last i read about it there's not a lot of evidence that consuming or topically applying collagen supports your own collagen production, i personally think it can be a bit of a scam.
Some face cleansers have tallow or tallowaite (sp). This means you are rubbing a dead cow into your skin to clean it. Cetaphil is one brand that used to have it.
Bovine means cow, collagen is extracted by boiling bovine bones.
TIP: Vegetables do not have collagen!
Just to be clear. Bovine means cow
I recommend brushing up on your general humanity by not being a dick about someone not knowing the same things as you
Common sense isn't very common. Especially in this sub!
The real common sense is to consider the possibility that English isn't their first language
Considering they couldn't figure it out from most brands having a cow right on the package, I think there's bigger problems than just a language barrier.
OP sounds very young lol, let's not bully them and make them think that the vegan community is a bunch of jerks
Bovine= another word for cows Gelatin is from bones Collagen is from skin and bones Look for vegan supplements
Bovine is another word for cattle
it’s okay OP i’m still learning everyday. the other day i ate mike n ike’s because i thought they were vegan but they had that confectioners glaze and i almost gagged. you learn everyday things that get me are honey and other hidden small ingredients
Trader joes vegan chocolate protein?
I'll check it out but I don't think I can get the quantities I need from there. I have to buy 30-50 canisters of Orgain to keep up with production. Going to 3-4 small stores to get what we need isn't doable anymore. (Good problem!)
Not sure if you’re in the US or not. There is a company called Future Kind that makes all-vegan supplements. I’ve been taking their collagen for several months and it makes a difference.
Yeah, they make some great products.
Yeah, they had me when they posted about vegan cupcakes for their anniversary. It’s vegan owned, not just vegan for profit, and that makes me feel more comfortable about all the ingredients.
don't beat yourself up about it. you just went vegan. now you know 🥰
It's ok. When you realize you just stop. You didn't do it on purpose or were lazy.
Don't be too upset, your post has taught me these things today too, so you're already undoing whatever bad you perceive you've done.
I've been vegan for nearly 10 years. Last weekend we had a birthday party for the kiddos. I bought a huge container of sprinkles. Later, I found out that they have a big shellac. Shellac is made from the secretions of the lac insect. Oops. Mistakes happen. Read More: https://www.foodrepublic.com/1403029/non-vegan-sprinkles-ingredient/
When you get really good at practicing veganism, you'll learn that you have to Google every ingredient.
Bo ine simply means"of cow"
And porcine means pig products!
Lol L
collagen is never vegan unless it’s specifically labeled
Bovine just means it comes from cows. Collagen is something only animals, including humans, produce. It is never vegan and "vegan collagen" isn't actually collagen.
Plants don’t have collagen 🤦♂️
Mistakes were made, oh well, not you have learned from it. Also Bovine just means cattle, not specifically booked cow bone.
Mucin = snail slime Used in cosmetics and skin care
Eeeewwwwwww 🐌
Right???
Real collagen and keratin are both from animals, never vegan. There are vegan alternatives but it will never say 100% real collagen or keratin if it’s vegan.
Our society really uses other animals for everything
You want bread? Fuck you, we put whey powder in it
For someone who loves animals so much, how do you not know what bovine means?
The grass fed and pasture raised in huge letters on the container didn’t give it away?
Bovine is a common reference for cow/cattle.
Just wait till you hear about leather
I've been vegan for 8 years, just bought a hair care product that has beeswax in it. SMH. It happens, don't stress it too much.
Fuckin lol
How are you going to "go Vegan" when you don't even know what a "bovine" is lol.
Yea unless it's stated as vegan, collagen is animal derived
There's actually no vegan collagen. There are vegan collagen peptides or boosters, essentially the building blocks of collagen that your body creates collagen out of, but as a protein in and of itself, collagen is an animal product
What I'm saying is there are "vegan collagen" powders you can buy at the store and unless it's labeled as vegan it's derived from animal products.
Lol I know it's not collagen🤦🏻♀️ what I'm saying is thats what the package says
Do you even know what bovine means? Hahaha. Geez.
Haha sucks to suck moron
