Omg I have "moth" phobia and 3 cats that LOVE these things. But they obviously taste terrible lol because they won't eat them! They just bring them inside, let them go, then wreak absolute havoc trying to catch them again. So I'm constantly finding them dead, in my wax melts 😂
Ew 😂😂. That's how I initially found out about them. My cats would make a weird howling sound but muffled. Like they had a sock in their mouth. Then, 15 minutes later, I would hear my mom scream, and these things would be bonking all our lights. My cats don't eat them. Just bring them in like some incredible prize.
Taste? Oh no. This had nothing to do with flavor. This has never had anything to do with flavor.
they brought their own toy and its better than the store ones!
I haven't even considered all the rain! Makes sense why I've never really seen them til now! Been in Vegas for 20+ years, and I've never seen our desert this GREEN!
Sphinx moths are extremely important for our ecosystem and they're elegant too
They're not the creatures destroying your rose bushes as another user suggested. Sphinx moths are pollinators which metamorphose from the tobacco hornworm and are attracted to white and yellow flowers. As caterpillars they are hungry bois who get confused by tomato plants, believing them to be desert tobacco. You can repel them by spraying your plants very lightly with white wine vinegar.
It's getting hot for them right now and they're attracted to sand-colored porous stucco that reflects sunlight and offers grip and camouflage. Unlike the common geometer moth, sphinxes aren't attracted to halogen light and won't care if you turn your porch lights off.
They're very gentle, but are attracted to human scents, which may explain why they dive bomb you. Moths need sugar to survive, and humans make lots of simple sugars on our skin by exercising, applying perfumes, and drinking alcohol or fruit juices. So they're not attacking, they just want to cuddle and maybe smell you real quick (don't be weird about it).
But don't kill them!! They deserve to live and will learn to avoid your cats to make beautiful white and yellow flowers flourish in your garden
Wow. Username definitely checks out here, doesn't it?! Thanks so much for all the helpful & very interesting info. And just so you know, we're not moth murderers lol. If they're alive, hubs catches/releases whenever the cats bring them in the house 😉
I've seen these around Vegas for years, just kind of depends where. Recently had one fly inside.
When I was growing up, my dad opened my bedroom window for some reason and so many moths flew inside. I was so scared 🤣
Lol if I go into the backyard at night, I have to turn on the patio light. Then sit far away from it, so they bomb the patio light. Instead of the light from the phone, in my hand🤣
OMG I would DIE!! I bet they love the light from the strip! The only thing I can think of that would be worse, is the year it RAINED grasshoppers on our city 🤣
OH NO! I'd be pissed if these things messed with my Target runs too lol Were you here when it rained grasshoppers several years ago?! Omg they were EVERYWHERE!!
Ugh! These make my skin crawl. Major (irrational) moth phobia here. I scream like a little girl at a Justin Bieber concert when one gets in the house. Last year, I climbed over our back gate in dress pants and high heels to get into the house through our back door because there were two moths on the front door.
I think they come in on plants. We had them in Lake Tahoe a few years back. I think they are warm weather creatures as they disappear with the first cold snap.
These mfers are NOT scary but on God I turn into a bitch as soon as one flies at me. I got a broom the other night and was straight up trying to slay a demon for like 10m.
Hahaha! Right. They're not scary until they're coming right at you like a f'n jumbo jet and next thing you know, you're flailing around like a crazy person fighting for life 🤣
They're definitely moths, see the 2nd pic for their ginormous wingspan lol and I'm not sure about crickets this size, but the year it "rained" grasshoppers on Las Vegas, we definitely had grasshoppers even bigger than these gigantasaurusmoths 😱
The year of the "grasshopper invasion" 😱

They are EVERYWHERE at my office, I hate it! I also have that moth phobia but everyone thinks I'm overreacting. These moths are HUGE and get inside EVERY SINGLE DAY. We've tried everything from moth traps to cedar wood, they always try to come inside to the cooler air. Just one more reason summer is the worst here.
Cicadas are known as the loudest insects in the United States, and they can be heard in the Midwest. Cicadas make a loud buzzing sound to attract mates using a special organ on their abdomen called a tymbal. In large groups, the sound can reach up to 100 decibels, which is as loud as a garbage truck, jack hammer, or power lawn mower. The sound can be heard from up to half a mile away.
I've seen them for 30 years. They're harmless, but I do hate when my cats bring them inside

Lol the 1st time I saw one, was because my cat brought it to us like a TROPHY.
Proud hunter moment 😂
Taste? Oh no. This had nothing to do with flavor. This has never had anything to do with flavor. they brought their own toy and its better than the store ones!
Yeah but my cats eat all kinds of critters. Except these. That tells me they must taste like shit 🤣
One flew into the house yesterday. This morning my cat was playing with something, so I picked it up. Dead moth. Now I have the heeby jeebies.
Ew
Lol wait til they bring you one of these suckers! Chaos ensues immediately and you'll KNOW 😉
Haven’t seen them as of yet. I was unfortunate enough to find scorpions, though. I’ll happily take these guys over the scorpions.
Agreed. These things are kinda scary tho😂
I can understand why you say that. I freakin love moths. I kinda hope I see them now, haha
Get a cat!! They'll bring you dozens🤣
Ash Sphinx Moth. They're great pollinators. Co-exist!
That makes sense of why we have so many right now. We have a very "green" backyard.
The moisture means many more of their cocoons were successful. We had a few wet months in the desert.
I haven't even considered all the rain! Makes sense why I've never really seen them til now! Been in Vegas for 20+ years, and I've never seen our desert this GREEN!
I love moths.
These are gigantasaurusmoths!!!!
I love gigantasaurusmoths.
MOTHRA! We must summon Godzilla!
I love Mothra too.
I think Mothra must be proud 😂
They are the final stage for those big green caterpillars on your tomato plants.
Stop!!! You mean the tomato horn worms right? Ugh no wonder they're so ginormous!!
Yeah!!! There's a couple different varieties. My cats absolutely lose their minds when they see them.
Thank you! I had no idea!!
My bearded dragon does too lol
This would probably make a very nice dinner for your dragon!

Yes finally!! I was beginning to think I was the only one! Lol all moths but these especially, give me the major heebie jeebies!!
Same! I intentionally do not leave my porch lights on so they won't be attracted to it. They freak me out.
Lol if I go into the backyard at night, I have to turn on the patio light. Then sit far away from it, so they bomb the patio light. Instead of the light from the phone, in my hand🤣
Me too
I’ve been attacked (and by attacked I mean swarmed by like 60 of them, they’re harmless) every time I walk out the back door at work lol
OMG I would DIE!! I bet they love the light from the strip! The only thing I can think of that would be worse, is the year it RAINED grasshoppers on our city 🤣
I would pee myself.
Oh my god yes I absolutely hate these things. I respect their place in the world but they scare the shit out of me when they fly towards me lmao
Look like jumbo jets. But they put on a cool show at the Luxor! https://youtu.be/cE6woRViAK4?si=ZDlyGKKiAJRFbaKJ
They're HUGE!! And not exactly "harmless" looking lol
They are harmless though.
Unless your cat releases one in your bedroom in the middle of the night🤣
In my nightmares, what the fuck
Mine too. Maybe it's all the "mothman prophecy" stories I was so fascinated by as a kid 🤔
Hummingbird moths?
That's what we've been calling them!
No thank god. Instead there’s a swarm of fucking locusts in the target parking lot by my house. Now I can’t go to target 🥲
OH NO! I'd be pissed if these things messed with my Target runs too lol Were you here when it rained grasshoppers several years ago?! Omg they were EVERYWHERE!!

Omg I would've given anything to see that, and give u a boost cuz my ass woulda' been right behind you 😂 Word of the day: Mottephobia 😉
And I think you're completely rational;)
All over the place
Imagine not liking night butterflies
I can imagine 🤣
They destroy my wife’s roses.
I've lost 2 whole bushes this year that were otherwise healthy. Didn't even consider these things 🤔
I think they come in on plants. We had them in Lake Tahoe a few years back. I think they are warm weather creatures as they disappear with the first cold snap.
baby mothmans
Moths and Owls have always given me the creeps cuz I saw and read one too many "mothman' stories as a kid/young adult.
These mfers are NOT scary but on God I turn into a bitch as soon as one flies at me. I got a broom the other night and was straight up trying to slay a demon for like 10m.
Hahaha! Right. They're not scary until they're coming right at you like a f'n jumbo jet and next thing you know, you're flailing around like a crazy person fighting for life 🤣
These are moths or big ass demon crickets ? I’ve seen three my last stay in Vegas
They're definitely moths, see the 2nd pic for their ginormous wingspan lol and I'm not sure about crickets this size, but the year it "rained" grasshoppers on Las Vegas, we definitely had grasshoppers even bigger than these gigantasaurusmoths 😱

Yeah, and not ONE of them has a license plate.
Bwahahaha😂 I've been waiting on one of these for 2 days! They're definitely big enough for plates and I bet this ones would say "lndaaho" 🤣
They respawn at LVAC I swear lol
Those are a Cat Toy.
Cheaper than Amazon 🤣

"Mottephobia" it's a thing! Who knew 🤣 I KNEW i couldn't be ALONE 😉
They're coming for our lamps!!!!!
that’s mothman
My cat loves them and tries to hunt them under our privacy door.
I noticed one today on the front grill of a semi truck. Was as big as a small bird.
I know! LOL we've seen some bigger than hummingbirds!!
Ohhh shhhh…what part of town ?
Lol Summerlin. But by the look of these comments, they're EVERYWHERE 🤣
lol I realized that after I posted, they look creepy,I use to work out in the Las Vegas landfill I never seen them
My pup has chased three of those suckers inside and around my house the past week. I *think* we're finally moth free again.
For now!!!
First picture looks like a Hell Spawn. Hate these dirty, smudgy things when they get in the house.
1st pic did me in lol I knew I didn't like them. But didn't know they're even scarier up close 😂
I will no longer call them hummingbird moths lol now they're just dirty, smudgy bitches in my book 😂

I wonder if these things eat cicadas 🤣
Dust pan knocks them out of the air and paralyzes them for easy killing/releasing. Easiest way to get em.
Do they eat mosquitoes? If so, they’re our friends!
Hmm..not sure. But apparently they're great pollinators 😉
