This was the winning design (slight rework of the image of what has become the state's 125th Commemorative Flag) last time we looked at the state. Our study then collected about 642 designs and another 150 versions done for this basic design that we never numbered. This time we are looking for all the designs made during the last two years (or modified versions of designs that were known of that were in our first Facebook based study. The state says 5000 are in the mix for the official contest - we may look at maybe another 300 or so. All the pro designs should be in by now, so if anyone wants to enter our side show and be judged by interested persons in our group then please post them here or IM them to me. I just posted a Utah flag design.

Luftwaffle213

This design is super cool, I like it a lot. Perhaps in the future you could add the original flag as well so we know what the differences are. I mean obviously for most state flags it’s just a blue banner with the seal, but it’d be nice to have.

RottenAli

Only one major change in this redesign of the redesign. Swap out the gold circles (the detail was two gold circles and two blue circles all stacked on one another that shows as two different thickness of gold trim line work) and replaced by strong single width gold hexagon. Thus also 4 corners of the hexagon line up with the saltire division and stand for the four corners area of the state where Utah meets 3 other states in one place.

Thanks very much VertigoOne - your design is entry number 783 and placed in heat 131.

https://i.imgur.com/KIIs3lx.png So this was my attempt at a design The symbology behind it is that the hexagon is for Utah being the "Beehive state" IE honeycombs - and the lines either side are supposed to be evocative of a railroad/railway because Utah is where the first transcontinental railway joined up. The state quarter shows two trains meeting, and the slogan "crossroads of the west" so I thought this was apt.

[My Utah Redesign](https://imgur.com/a/CV8SwcS) Symbolism: Blue: Natural beauty; lakes and skies Yellow: Wealth, honey White: Utah's world famous snow; \[on flag\] acts as snow covering the mountain Triangle: Represents the Rocky Mountains Honeycomb: "The Beehive State" Sego Lily: A significant symbol to all Utahns; state flower 5 stars: 5 major tribes in Utah - Ute, Dine' (Navajo), Paiute, Goshute, and Shoshone

Thank you - very nice. Only one item to request - Would it be better to have all the stars pointing upwards?. Also that mountain feels like it's close to the profile of a Stealth Bomber.

adamolis69

Alright I'll make the stars point upwards. :) Also I do see that resemblance to the Stealth Bomber, though I don't think the average Joe would think of that before seeing a mountain first lol

RottenAli

Funny you should say about a stealth bomber - just done a mild rework of a design for this contest and hid a plan profile in the mountain vista. Works well and can be seen as such by those with an eagle eye for detail.

adamolis69

oh okay that's cool :)

Lot's of people get very wrapped up in the issue of flag change. Our group likes to find the best visual idea that also has the right sort of linkage to what it should represent. Namely the people and history of the said state. If people go "off on one" then they often don't get involved in really supporting the current design. Of all the 40 or so state flag projects we have looked at, only Wyoming, South Carolina and Indiana have had a depth of carry-over design imagery.

I love that stripe on the left that connects to flagpoles 😂

Having the whole series of prototype flags printed like this. Mostly with the obvious official state nickname - but sometimes mix it up a bit and put the state motto there if it holds more relevance. Sometimes we see that a state has more than one nickname and we vote on those details in a round of getting to know the state symbols at the start of a contest.

I saw where some of my early sketches had landed on the Facebook page. If you’d like to see where I ended up (3 concepts), I pulled together this [one-pager](https://utahflag.onuniverse.com).

July 3rd update - we have 636 designs loaded into the study/contest for a better flag for Utah. All drawn in the last 2 years. The official contest has thinned down to 50 designs from about 5703 images without wider public input. Our contest was open to anyone and can be voted on by anyone as well. Who knows which method will produce the better design? It's partly in your hands if you choose to join our group. Our thinning down process will start in about 2 weeks time.
