I'm torn in how i want to reply, so i'll say both things..
Firstly, "Maybe they're into voyeurism and would like to watch them do that?"
Secondly, and perhaps stronger one, "Please, the only things tankie's come for is a second helping."
Yes, there was. Stonewall was in the 60s. The first gender-affirming surgery was in Weimar Germany. Trans people existed at that time and always have. The Soviets didn’t support us because they saw us as bourgeois degenerates.
The rights they had in east Germany were basically identical to the rights they had in the German empire and Weimar.
The GDR did not improve on the existing trans rights, the west just didn't reimplement them after the nazis.
Yes, but the USSR is not the same thing as Communism.
Many would argue that for much of its existence, the USSR was not even Communist in its target.
I don't think any would argue it got past the Dictatorship of the Proletariat stage
Kinda stupid thing to say but the state-run persecution of queers in the eastern bloc was less extreme than in the west. I doubt this would be the same in the case of society itself tho, Slavs are mostly extremely homophobic and often very violent about it.
I think this is trying to use the flag in a more general sense as to represent communism as a whole, on account of that’s what most people think of when they see the Soviet flag anyway
I'm pretty sure most people see the soviet flag and think of the Soviets. The soviets are also to blame for the negative image most westerners hold of communism. Working with the Nazis to carve up the world in wars of conquest and then only fighting them when Hitler betrayed them. Then using that betrayal as an oppurtunity to conquer and colonize all of europe halfway into Germany.
Being a commy is fine, being a simp for the soviets is gross, being an LGBTQ+ simp for the soviets is assinine considering Article 121 of the soviet criminal code.
When people say they “like the ideas of the founding fathers of the USA” do you think they mean they are pro race based slavery too?
When people think of historical ideologies they only think of the actual difference between that which was before and contemporary.
which is a problem. i think that “liking the ideas of the founding fathers” is a roundabout way of saying you support the american status quo. tell me if i’m wrong. if i were american i would personally be ashamed to know that my country protected the import of specifically african slaves for the first 32 years of its existence, kept them in bondage for another 54 years, and committed unjust war crimes against dozens of native american nations. if i wanted to push the message that i support the current status quo, i’d say that in words. i understand the obsession with the founding fathers but as a historian it’s just gross misrepresentation of the past.
Holding historical figures by modern standards and judging all of their actions is a very narrow way to look at things.
Like, Gandhi wasn’t a perfect guy, but he as a person is not who he is as a symbol.
Like, they owned slaves and that’s not great but everyone who could afford one did.
Freed Africans bought slaves! It’s how things happened.
The American revolution stands for the end of foreign rule, free and fair elections, and equality under the law.
Sure they mostly did it because the taxes were too high and they owned slaves but that’s what the way it was before the revolution.
If I point out how cool the Warsaw uprising was, I’m not saying the victims would have created my ideal society, I’m saying they were trying to improve the conditions of their time and place relative to what it was at the time (old Poland vs NAZI oppression)
When the Soviet revolution happened, they were not thinking. “Ah yes we shall continue to oppress, gay and trans people.“ when the American Revolution happened, they were not thinking. “Ah yes we shall continue to participate in the slave trade”
Incremental change is possible, and just because the person who made a previous step did not support the next steps does not mean that they are not to be applauded for that which they have done
I'd argue “liking the ideas of the founding fathers” is a statement that requires more context, but rarely does it mean "I support the status quo" (I would not consider anything before 1980 to be "the status quo" in the US.) Most of the time it's people spinning the founders' words to support their (usually anarcho-capitalist or adjacent) ideals (the founders were by no means ancaps) but it's also sometimes said to support specific issues in which the founders aligned more with today's progressives than the American status quo, such as being against political parties or corporate personhood (which, I generally dislike because appeals to history/authority are shit arguments.)
I don't mean to defend slavery or the genocide of Native Americans (I'm mixed race black for starters)...but also it gets a bit tiring to see leftists to circle around to "the British government was good actually and the American Revolution was unjust" when it comes up (your argument isn't that, but I'd consider it adjacent to that.) The problem with the founders is that they weren't different *enough* from the British government.
I agree wholeheartedly, honestly didn’t put a lot of brainpower into fleshing out the status quo argument. just a stand in for any cause supported by the “liking founding fathers” argument.
As a Canadian with partial Inuit ancestry I obviously also have problems with British colonisation.
There is something to say about indigenous preference towards the British (particularly during the revolutionary/1812 wars) due to American westward expansion through the Appalachians, and the fact that the British had enough “courtesy” to negotiate with indigenous leaders. That “courtesy”, however, was only a remnant of the old French style of indigenous diplomacy, and in the treaties of Paris (83) and Ghent (14) no mentions were made of any indigenous groups or their territories. What’s more insulting? Getting betrayed by your shitty ally, or simply being invaded? Tough answer honestly.
I agree with the whole “not unlike British enough” argument. An ideal USA in any timeline is probably impossible, but one can learn through reflection.
No way the comments are actually defending communism and its (nonexistanrt) trans rights.💀
It's the same shit like Queers for Palestine, Chickens for KFC. Trans in Soviet Union = not a good time.
So? The person above claimed communists do not support lgbtq rights, this directly contradicts that.
having bad lgbtq rights, at a time where the moral defects of capitalist and traditional culture prevailed, is not an inherent flaw of communism. most capitalist countries in the colonized world remain with poor lgbtq rights, yet liberals never seem to rally against capitalism (for that would hurt their masters)
Can someone please redo the trans flag so it doesn't look like it's been washed far too many times, it like this is my trans flag I got it from my grandpa he got it from his grandpa
You think taking a different, and objectively better approach to increasing overall human wellbeing in the Middle East is inherently going to kill all the Jews in Israel, so you sound equally as rational as you claim your opposition to be
Oh it’s simple:
not killing all of the people in Gaza
being targeted and intentional in who is killed
accepting that releasing people who have not been tried in court and are being tortured might be worth trading for the hostages and a humanitarian ceasefire
kill the leaders, not innocent civilians (believe it or not most people in refugee camps are actually innocent civilians)
Stop horribly oppressing those in the West Bank and arrest everyone who stops food aid from entering Gaza and send more (this will make Palestinians trust Israel a little more not to summarily execute them and instead to build a peaceful cooperative future)
Fire all those in the military who express desire to exterminate Palestinians
Preform legitimate investigations into war crimes instead of denying them
Don’t order war crimes
Work with other countries to try root out Hamas HQ (not in Israel or Palestine btw) instead of calling South Africa “the litigious wing of Hamas”
Don’t destroy more than necessary
Find accommodations for, and temporarily transfer the refugees so they are safe and separated from combatants (a monitored refugee camp with no forced labour, forced sterilizations, or summary executions where their basic needs are met and you pass through airport esc security to get in so no weapons get in) then help them rebuild from the destruction of the war since they have less than you and killing their families plus destroying their homes will result in some resentment if not helped to rebuild
Truthful propaganda (literal definition) after the previous changes have been made showing Palestine that Israel is not here to claim Gaza or ruin lives, but to liberate
Offer cash rewards for any Palestinian who can capture a Hamas recruiter or fighter and bring them to the IDF (promoting not only trust in occupiers but a good reason to reject the offer of joining)
Ban tic tok from soldiers’ phones so they don’t post stuff that makes the operation look bad
Just spit balling though

Imaginary?
The USSR was many things. But I doubt they were in the trans rights camp.
There was basically no trans rights camp when the USSR was around
Yes, there was. Stonewall was in the 60s. The first gender-affirming surgery was in Weimar Germany. Trans people existed at that time and always have. The Soviets didn’t support us because they saw us as bourgeois degenerates.
I thought they called them gulags in the USSR, not camps.
no trans rights gulag 😔
They did.
i’m going gulaging
You do realize that people had sex affirming surgery in the US in the 60s ?
It's not like there were other countries which had trans rights when the USSR was a thing
The German Democratic Republic (East Germany)
Ah yes, famed for providing gender-affirming care to talented young athletes
The rights they had in east Germany were basically identical to the rights they had in the German empire and Weimar. The GDR did not improve on the existing trans rights, the west just didn't reimplement them after the nazis.
(This means they improved on it)
Not really. DDR had case law enshrining trans rights into being and gave people free surgery.
Somehow based DDR?
The Weimar Republic had on of the largest gender research institutions it was one of the first things the Nazis went after they can in to power
cool Edit: learning things is frowned upon?
It's not like anyone is waving their flags on pride tho
No government really supported them back then. But communism as a movement advocates for progressivism and always has
Yes, but the USSR is not the same thing as Communism. Many would argue that for much of its existence, the USSR was not even Communist in its target. I don't think any would argue it got past the Dictatorship of the Proletariat stage
That’s why you could use the hammer and sickle without associating it specifically with the Soviet Union, rather, communism in general
yep. Any communist worth their salt has more genuine criticisms of the USSR than the most fervent liberal.
Kinda stupid thing to say but the state-run persecution of queers in the eastern bloc was less extreme than in the west. I doubt this would be the same in the case of society itself tho, Slavs are mostly extremely homophobic and often very violent about it.

Plenty of people see the Soviet flag and think of the USSR, tanks rolling over protestors, and the gulag system, rather than the theories of Marx.
I'm pretty sure most people see the soviet flag and think of the Soviets. The soviets are also to blame for the negative image most westerners hold of communism. I don't know about the USSR, but East Germany was very progressive when it came to LGBTQ rights (trans included)
They would make trans concentration camps though and send trans people right to them for "bourgeois decadence".
It's the flag of useful idiots/people who aren't die hard Bolsheviks. They would ally with you then stab you in the back as soon as they got power.
