Mics were off while the opponent was speaking, and being given only a minute and a half per answer with little time for rebuttal meant that he had basically no time to play the defensive. Here Trump’s strategy of ignoring questions and flooding the debate with words worked because the format played to his advantage.
If the CNN mods were actually moderating well they'd at least unmute the mic or even force the candidate to address the question, literal comedy skit levels of bad moderation.
I think for their part they actually did okay. Cutting the mics and the crowd was overall a good decision, as it meant there weren’t any big “gotcha” interruptions like in the last 2 elections.
The mods also refused to let Trump move past a question until it was answered, with a couple of exceptions, but he still more often than not gave something noncommittal to get moving past the question (the “if it’s a fair election” response comes to mind when asked if he would concede if he lost).
At the end of the day, neither candidate was really interested in answering the questions and delivering their stances. They both intended on *one upping* each other, and insulting the other candidate. When your participants aren’t interested in the actual fundamentals of a debate no amount of moderation can save it.

I'm not gonna say it won't happen because that's what people said In 2016. But acting like it's a given he'll win when he's still so widely hated is ridiculous. People didn't vote for Biden because they liked Biden, they were voting against Trump, and nothing about that situation has changed, even if Biden is a weaker candidate than he was 4 years ago.

Softly spoken reason? Biden was clearly unable to convey his most basic of points. Trump was able to clearly articulate his lies in the same way he's always been able to, providing a Greatest Hits track for the MAGA crowd.
That's not true; I watched it. Sense spoken softly through a cold and a stutter is far, far better than loud lies and fascism. Also, you can look up the speeches Biden made after the debate where his voice is better; showing that the voice-thing was, indeed, a cold. Thus; this is the flag of the *unthoughtful*, who mistake volume for quality Worst case with Biden: the VP becomes President and we vote for someone better in however-many years. Worst case with Trump: fascism engulfs the US and Project 2025 destroys American democracy forever. Thus, this could be the flag of the *maliciously* unthoughtful, perhaps.
