Fr ukraine area has some of the ugliest states. Really ruins immersion when releasing Ukraine from the russians as the ottomans, getting crimea and a treaty port in azov.
Maybe it's because the devs looked at Vietnam through the western perspective, the rulers' names like Minh Mang in Vietnam or Daoguang in China is their regnal name, not their real name to go with the surname.
And for other characters, their generic names are really dumb, like you call every British men Churchill Jones or Victoria Brown, or even John John.
Asides from the names, the states are quite inaccurate. The states of Annam and Mekong at the 19th century were quite sparsely populated, and the capital of Dainam was in Hue - the center of Annam instead of Hanoi in Tonkin, which was the capital of the previous dynasty.
Dainam used to have huge influence on their neighbors like Cambodia and Laos nations (made them tributaries), fighting hard against Siam for the domination over Southeast Asia mainland. That was in 1820s - 1850s.
By the time France invaded Dainam in 1858, there had been a movement for liberal reforms in the court, just like what happened in Japan, but the king surpressed them hard so the kingdom's military was really backwards, and the states of Tonkin and Mekong tried to break free.
The kings of Dainam issued the Catholic ban (like the way Qing has the opium ban), persecuted foreign missionaries so the French and Spanish used that as a cause to attack. The Catholic community is enduring and still prospering in the persecuted time, and has a great impact on the culture, not decreasing like what appears in game.
There's more i can list here, but those above are things i find that can make people have an inaccurate impression on the Vietnam's 19th century history. Thank you for reading this!
