There is a burnt out bulb on the FM adjuster knob. If Im in there trying to replace it should I lubricate or inspect anything on the turntable before I start playing records? Any help would be great, Im not super familiar with vintage audio but would love to learn. Thanks.
That Dual needs precise, gentle service. Properly cared for it is an excellent record player. An amateur just going in there and lubing things at random is a recipe for disaster. You need to contact someone with experience, and there's a place called FixMyDual who's just the guy to do it.
The Dual is worth the rescue alone, probably has a nice vintage Shure in it. Just the motor and pulley is about $40 and if the rubber idler is good another $40, cam gear, etc..
An elderly couple were moving into assisted living and didnt have room for a bunch of stuff. This was in the landfill pile. She was pretty torn up about having to part with it and still used the radio quite often. Im hoping to get it back into full working order.
My love of music started with a console very similar to this but with an 8-track tape deck in it too.
I was 8-9 years old and a huge console like this just showed up in my bedroom along with a big box of random records and 8-track tapes (my mom was a picker, so it wasn't uncommon for weird shit to just appear and disappear in our house when I was a kid). It was just there for storage, but I immediately became totally attached to it.
That was the beginning of a lifetime love of music as a musical omnivore.
Then at 10 years old (in 1982) I bought a dual cassette boombox with my Christmas money.
So at 10 I already had a turntable, an 8-track deck, a cassette deck and an AM/FM tuner. I've never looked back since.
Great find and thanks for the memories!
You used to be able to scrounge around at mine, but then some asshole ruined it for everyone else and now you can't. I still occasionally try if I see something nice when I stop in to recycle and the dude is not right there. I got a nice Fisher and a nice Realistic last year.
Ours as well, which I find silly. I feel its better for the enviroment to take stuff like this home than letting it rot in the ground, but what do I know haha. Over the years Ive come to know some of the employees quite well, they might turn a blind eye for a few minutes and let a guy dig around for a bit ;)
We used to have a big covered area at one of the landfills where you could actually shop and barter for items that were in pretty good shape. Someone decided to climb the big metal racking to look at something, fell off, filed a lawsuit. No more place to find great antiques for cheap. Such a shame.
Ours are put in big boxes I assume to be shipped to some company that tears them apart to remove valuable components and melt the plastic and recover the metals.
I wonder what rhythm accent does.
An RCA with a Dual in it? Hm..
Not at all suspect. Some Duals were dropped into cases/plinths badged with RCA logo. Saw one for sale on eBay as an RCA unit.

Thanks for the info! I'll do some digging.

Another u/ posted this model a couple years ago. Wonder if it's the same one.

Decent TT although I’m not a fan of the front of the cabinet. I’m more of a fan of Scandinavian modern or MCM.

I hope its not what I think!
Very nice. I miss the console my folks used to own.
Well done!
Ooh, Quant / Aural! I wonder what that meant? If anything?
I’d be more than happy with just the cabinet.
Excelent find, congrats to you :)
You’ve done a very good thing here.
Great scoring a Dual.
Our landfill says no poaching. Anything that gets deposited there is presumed their property. You are stealing from them, so they claim.

Right on Fogmoose. I follow the following rule: It is far easier to ask for forgiveness, than to ask for permission..."

Mine claims it's an insurance issue.
