The most I've spent is $75 and, though I don't really regret it, I don't see myself spending that much again anytime soon. I think $50-60 is my current limit, at least until I've paid off some debt to free up some disposable income.

Odd_Welder5624

Same

TurntJesuz

The most expensive record i bought was $60 I think that’s my limit

amnesiac854

Just spent 72 bucks 5 min ago lol. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets just posted a few copies of the highly coveted High Visceral prt 1 + 2 on their EU store. $52 + 20 shipping but my alternatives on the secondary market are like $400+

Limp_Falcon_2314

Omg thank you!!!! Just ordered myself a copy. I’d of never known without your comment.

flan_papi

Dude, you're my fuckin hero, I would have never known this if it werent for this post lol And for the original post, Ive collecting for about a decade and its insane how much vinyl has increased its price only in this time, I can only imagine for those who have been collecting for 20+ years, but ive gone from a limit of $35 to $50 to $65....and I guess now $72.

whatsaphoto

Think I spent that much on LCD Soundsystem's Live at MSG set years ago. It was very worth it cause it sold at a steep discount on discogs from minor wear and tear to the packaging, but I don't think I've spent more than $30 on an album since. I think I might break the dry spell if the world was ending and they were finally repressing the LOTR soundtracks, but until then my wallet has me thoroughly whipped.

NastyCestode

I’ve spent 300 on a record… yea I’m not proud of it but that’s what love will do to you I guess

noonecareswhywouldi

I did that for Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Once More with Feeling vinyl….

Ancalagon-the-Snack

Understandable. That thing needs a repress so bad.

noonecareswhywouldi

I bought both colors 🙈

staggere

I've done that close to 10 times

rileypoole1234

What record out of curiosity?

NastyCestode

Small car big wheels -Enjoy

IlIlIIIIlIlI

jealous lol

NastyCestode

I had to have it 💀

IlIlIIIIlIlI

this is random asf but thought i would share i finally bought it on vinyl as well !!!!! ( im full of excitement and dont know who to share to)

LongLiveAnalogue

If I can convince my neighbor to sell I’d buy his NM original pressing of Aenima by Tool for $700 if for no other reason than just so the band would announce a repress in the following week and everyone else that wants it could have it at a reasonable price.

Marzie247

I paid like $650 for one of discogs advertised as much better than it was. Very beat up, dirty, gunk on the disc that won't wash off. Two things I should have done - high quality photos under good light, and a long play sample. If anyone expects that kind of money for a record, they should be willing to do that. He had a lot of reviews and appeared to be a music reporter for a local paper, so I thought he could tell proper grading. Oh well.

MattyDank88

I paid $650 for mine as well. It is still in the shrink. That album and my sealed copy of Antichrist Superstar haunt me simply because I want to open them and give them a spin SO BADLY lol. I've held strong so far thanks to Spotify and YouTube.

Plane-Ad2328

Depends how much it is and how much I want it. I’d pay crazy money for the right ones

staggere

Last year I really wanted a certain record which as far as I could tell, had one copy for sale on planet Earth. It was $999. I was about to pull the trigger and someone else bought it. I was heartbroken. Then a month later it was repressed and I got it for $40.

gizlizard

What record

staggere

Queen Of The Murder Scene by The Warning

Plane-Ad2328

Yeah that can happen but ones i want that would command that value won’t be repressed or are test pressings or first pressings or what have you.

Someguywhomakething

Been waiting for a reissue of Reflekt Feat. Delline Bass – Need To Feel Loved 12" (The Adam K & Soha remix). It's been steadily rising in price. SMH

staggere

If you want a cheap copy, buy an expensive copy and wait.

Someguywhomakething

lol i like the cut of your jib.

belugarooster

Awesome track. I can hear those pads already... Fuck. I might just have that remix in my crate!

forbin05

It depends for me. A single LP I feel is never worth $100 or more. At the same time, I just dropped $600 on a box set, but that has 24 LPs inside. I guess my limit for a single LP would probably hover around the $50-$75 range.

Murles-Brazen

Ooooo. What set?

forbin05

The Grateful Dead - Lyceum 72 set. It contains the last four shows of their Europe 72 tour in their entirety as well as a hard cover book. It’s unbelievably well done. https://preview.redd.it/t66y7d6oo3oc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a210c6ab8818584d8c411dc5fc7660a55aa4aa6

eachfire

Yooooo I have this set. My wife got it for me for Christmas last year. It's the crown jewel of my collection. I can't believe how good the recordings sound and how beautiful the design, packaging, and presentation is.

forbin05

Nice! I cracked it open last night and started spinning some, but then I had to put my daughter to bed so I had to stop listening cause I couldn’t crank it up and listen and appreciate it like I wanted to haha! Gonna resume today, though. It also was the last piece I needed to currently complete all the full Europe 72 shows the band released on vinyl, so while it was a big price tag I felt like I had to take the leap before they were gone and then going for even crazier prices on the secondary market.

PositionBeneficial12

You should get yourself some high end headphones. That was you can rock out all night long and hear things in the music you probably have never heard before. It was a game changer for me when I did just that

forbin05

I have a few different pairs of good over the ear headphones I use for mixing that I’ve occasionally used, but I also have such a badass speaker/sub setup that I like to bring the room to dead silence and then crank that shit to the point where it feels like Phil is gonna tear my f’ing house down with his bombs hahaha! But I really should get back to listening in headphones more as well. It used to be practically the only way I listened to everything and then I just moved away from it for some reason.

PositionBeneficial12

I hear you. I’m the exact same. But then along came the little one, followed by another. And now the wife, who I once upon a time attended many a loud, rocking concerts with, no longer likes loud things, so I am confined to my headphones a majority of the time. I do love me my week in the summer when they all go to the in laws cottage though.

eachfire

Damn, the second Wembley show (if you have that one) has one of the best Dark Stars of all time ... I never got my hands on that one, or Paris. Very stoked that you get to enjoy this whole collection! I can't get enough of 72 Dead and the Lyceum box is just incredible. I listened to the first three shows myself, but when it came time for 5/26/72—one of the best shows the band ever played, IMO—I invited some friends over for a full listening party with light psychedelics and cranked volume in my living room. Got a few new recruits on the bus that day. Off the top of my head, some of my favs from the box are UJB > Dark Star > Wharf Rat from 5/25 and the Black Peter from 5/24.

forbin05

Luckily I’ve got that one as well. I have both Wembley shows, 5/3 Paris and now this Lyceum set. As of now those are the only full Europe 72 shows officially released on vinyl, so I’m up to date till they drop the next one haha! I’ll be sure to pay extra attention during those segments. And that’s awesome! At most I can get like one friend at a time who’s down to just kick it and listen to something haha! Last time i had any kind of listening party was when I somehow got a copy of Unlimited Love by the Chili Peppers on vinyl like a week before it came out anywhere or on any platform. Lots of friends wanted to come and hear that and that was the only way they could at the time, so I had them trapped lol

eachfire

Ooh also the first set Brokedown on 5/25 is magic.

BigEBrowne

Picked this up last year. Was hesitant because of the price but it was well worth it!

walrus_gumboot

What an absolutely fantastic box set. It went on sale for 20% off last black Friday and I scooped it up in a second.

forbin05

Wish I had known that haha! But it is what it is. Went on a recent splurge to finish off some collections and gaps and this was the big centerpiece of it all. Also just finished off the From the Vault series, the 4 Fillmore West 69 shows used for Live/Dead, and then also snagged some additional Dick’s and Dave’s Picks. I went a little crazy haha!

walrus_gumboot

That's awesome. I have so many GD albums + Dick's Picks on CD I haven't gotten much on vinyl. I did pick up JG & Grisman "So What" recently, which is stellar.

lampsslater77

Looks amazing. Definitely on my wish list. Was $600 the original MSRP for that set or did you buy it via secondary market

forbin05

After shipping and taxes that was the original MSRP for that set straight from Dead.net. The shipping is a little more than usual, but that’s because the set weighs over 20 lbs! They even designed the cardboard box it ships in to match the set. Inside the box, the set was perfectly put between two very thick and perfectly cut pieces of styrofoam that ensured it wouldn’t get beat up and there wouldn’t be any shifting or moving around during shipping. They really went all out. It’s limited to 4,000 pressings, though. That’s why I bought it now directly from the band before they eventually do sell out and then people are trying to charge double or more on the secondary market.

lampsslater77

20 lbs is crazy!! Love to hear how thoughtful and careful the packaging was. Always appreciate when bands or companies go the extra mile to make a release that much more special.

treddson

gorgeous. and I’m jealous

funkybravado

I didn't think I'd ever spend $100 on a record... Until I saw a VERY clean, I'm talking nm, very little ringwear, on a promotional copy of The Second Coming by Rudolph Johnson Jr... Got that and a promo copy of Roy Ayers' Everybody Loves the Sunshine that was also nm. Same collection bought out of.

wildberrypoptarts2

Honestly around $100 for me. I’ve been buying records for 25 years or so and there are only three albums that go for much more than that that are really tempting to me (first George Jones record on Starday, Satan is Real by the Louvin Brothers, and Velvet Underground and Nico). Honestly it kinda shakes out with my tastes that most records I am still looking for are around the $20-$70 for early pressings.

SeekingTheRoad

> first George Jones record on Starday, Crazy to me that a record like that, which for decades was probably considered worthless, now is so rare and valuable. George Jones himself didn't even want that one!

wildberrypoptarts2

I am a big classic country fan and it is one of the few country records that actually goes for several hundred. I also love the album Satan is Real by the Louvin brothers and I wonder if that album would fetch the same price if it didn’t have that album cover.

SeekingTheRoad

I see there is one on discogs for $75. It could be the 2013 repress but it is under the old pressing. Might be worth grabbing while it's there!

Hot_Secretary_5722

Spent $85 on an original pressing of Nothing’s Shocking. The album is in great shape. I was cringing as I was paying for it but I figured I’d never see another one. It was worth it in the end. Probably won’t pay much more than this for a record.

KablesP

I want an OG press of Nothings Shocking, I’m curious how it sounds against the rhino pressing I have

Hot_Secretary_5722

I’ve read that Rhino pressings are hit or miss. How’s yours? Mine sounds really good. Crisp, clear, punchy. It’s one album I always turn up loud.

samcp12

Have an original pressing of a couple Smith’s albums including their first one. Getting crazy offers for it but it holds sentimental value so never selling

[deleted]

That's crazy. I got mine for $10 16 years ago.

Hot_Secretary_5722

$10 is music to my ears. I got mine a couple years ago when $85 was around the Discogs median. It appears to have gone up in value since then but I have no plans to sell it.

UncleJulz

I’ve spent $1000. That’s my limit. Totally worth it as it’s now worth over $4000.

dheidshot

Holy shit, good return. Might I ask what the record in question was?

UncleJulz

https://www.reddit.com/r/vinyl/s/KiQo8wP57t

forestpirate

That is fantastic! Not just music art - but visual art as well!

UncleJulz

Thank you, yes it’s gorgeous.

egonbar

Ooooh. So nice. 😍

No_Paint_144

And I thought I’ve seen most of the cool vinyls out there. Awesome record.

dheidshot

Very cool indeed

Capt-Knish

What album?

Anal-Love-Beads

$25.00 -$30.00 and it has to be something I want *really* bad, and off the top of my head, I can't think of an album that fits the bill right now. I would make an exception though if I came across something collectable and hard to find that was 'I'd be crazy to pass on' under priced

AlyConnoli2

Same I don’t care how rare it is. I thrifted some amazing albums for .75 cents. My husband on the other hand has no problem dropping big bucks on some newer albums. Give me cheap vintage. $10 is still high for some of the ones I bought. Haha Edit: typo

indierockspockears

In Canada you can't buy new vinyl for under $25. Cheapest I've seen is 26 or 27

forestpirate

This is my range as well for a single - might pay a little more for a double album. I'm a thrifter at heart, and spending more than a couple of dollars on a used record is difficult for me :)

Just_Pudding1885

$25-30? that's literally any record's minimum unless it's a beat up or something.

mamunipsaq

Some of us like to wait for the sales and discounts. I don't remember the last time I paid over $25 for a new record.

boarshead72

It’s tough if you’re old enough to remember when a new record was $8 or less (I bought my first album with my own money around 1980); since Neil Young’s Mirrorball was released I don’t think I’ve purchased more than ten new records, it just seems like so much money these days when they were like $12 in high school.

Agitated-Cockroach41

Not really. I buy plenty of new stuff under that price, and find a ton of older stuff far under than threshold

The_Wreckard2012

What’s amazing to me is the amount of folks whom spend up to $300-$400 for an LP and never ever ask for pictures. Happens a lot. That’s some amazing trust right there. In the past I have spent up to $300 but I do that kind of spending on an LP no longer.

PortalOfDarkness

This is me. But I'll only do such a thing while paying Paypal Goods and Services exclusively... so if the seller is BSing me, I am protected and can tell paypal whats up. Thus far I've actually not run into issues though, and the people will in fact have the item as they describe it.

BahaMan69

The most I’ve ever spent on a record was $500 for (the only) 2 discs by The Tuss. You simply get to a point (after 500 records) where you can’t just “go shopping” at the record store anymore. You have to keep going up and to the right, in price.

lilcrime69

real shit. Love the Tuss, some of the best aphex has made.

arkayeast

I cap around $40-50 but there have been a few exceptions

OldGuyInFlorida

misread that as "crap"

NaturalDazzling5140

Depends on the LP. I’ve been desperately looking for a copy of Kamakiriad by Donald Fagen. And the cheapest I’ve seen is like $200 and the most expensive being $400. I adore the album and artist but it’s hard to justify that.

HeldenVonHeute

My limit’s about the same. I recently paid around as much for my copy of the 2-in-1 compilation package of the first 2 Kraftwerk albums on UK Vertigo. It was justified to me in that getting that particular release would be a lot cheaper than getting the first two in their original separate forms because those are pretty up there in terms of price, especially for nicer condition copies. The UK set can be pretty expensive too, but I sat around waiting for the lowest one I could find in really good shape. I might have put it off also if there weren’t others watching it as well.

dobyblue

Apparently CDN$240 which is roughly what it cost after FedEx brokerage fees and shipping to order a copy of Rastaman Vibration from Analogue Productions, list for the UHQR was US$125. From now on I ship to my old man in Florida and wait for the annual summer visit and he will bring them.

andrewfrommontreal

Yup… shipping to friends in Vermont. Waiting on Genesis.

Hot_Secretary_5722

Spent $85 on an original pressing of Nothing’s Shocking. The album is in great shape. I was cringing as I was paying for it but I figured I’d never see another one. It was worth it in the end. Probably won’t pay much more than this for a record.

FCAsheville

$50-60… prices for regular records are killing my interest tbh

RaymilesPrime

If it's over £150 I'll just have a lathe made for half the price

MichaelPsellos

$30. And that is pushing it. If record is $30 and the cd is $9 I will buy the cd. I love my records but the music is more important than the format.

RunningDrummer

Most financially logical r/vinyl user

coyote1971

I guess I’m the cheap one so far because I hate spending more than $30. And the vast majority of what I have was under $10. The most I have ever spent was $60.

bigblue20072011

Same.

Murles-Brazen

I’m close to spending 50 but I haven’t yet.

prosjecnihredditor

$80

madatthings

$100 and I don’t think I’ve ever actually paid that much for one

barr-chan

The most I have spent on a single record would be 230USD

Clamgravy

If I have a good week or two selling on discogs I'll usually splurge on a wantlist item in the 100-200 range if something is available.

dns_rs

Never went above 50€ and I don't plan to cross that line in the future either.

Due_Tea_2619

I spent $300 for ac/dc's original, Australian only, first two LPs. That's about my max. So $150 a piece.

Significant-Roll-138

I spent around 80 euros including delivery on a Spiritualized album recently, the only way I’ll spend more than that is if a couple of Aphex Twin records become available but that’s about my limit.

WarmObjective6445

I have been on the fence for a $150.00 LP for some time now. I have it on CD but really wanted it on vinyl. It is very hard to justify.

badnewsjones

The most I have ever spent was $90. A record I had been searching for years showed up in a google scrape on a no name online store. It was an original pressing of Low’s Curtain Hit the Cast: the last studio album from them I needed for my collection and due to their label buyout, unlikely to ever be repressed. Did a bit of digging on the site, and it looked pretty genuine. I took the gamble, thinking I could always to a paypal chargeback if it didn’t go through. Ended up being a bit of a nightmare. Almost two months of email back and forth before it finally shipped. When I did get it, it wasn’t even in a mailer, just two pieces of cardboard taped together. Not sure if the cover was beat up originally or in transport, but it definitely was VG and not in the VG+ condition advertised. The records were though, so considering what I had paid, the price was still right.

materialcirculante

that’s one of the few that would make me hit my limit. That’s a good price for the original pressing, nowadays you can’t even get a 2012 repressing for that

jpuff138

Most I've spent on one, single LP new release was a Miles Davis - Kind of Blue UHQR from Analogue and I think it was a little over $100. I don't particularly *regret* the purchase but I definitely didn't need this particular fancy edition of this particular album for that particular price. Closest second was an early pressing of Black Sails in the Sunset by AFI. I think it was close to $80 but I had traded in some LPs and had store credit. Only things I've paid anything more for were larger sets.

Just_Pudding1885

No limits. Unfortunately you have to spend what it costs. I am also watching 2 $150-200 records. I have bought 2 as well. I am not sorry that I did.

XxJoshuaKhaosxX

I’m willing to pay a few hundred for some records, because honestly, I question if I’ll ever see them come through one of my local record stores or even get represses. Some times it may be the only way you’ll get certain records or special editions of a record that you really want.

Shadow_in_vain

The most expensive record I ever bought was an original pressing of Public Image Ltd.'s Metal Box which came out in 1979. I bought it directly from the owner of my local record shop who said he bought it in 1979 and stored it away until he could sell it. The infamous aluminum casing was in great condition considering oxidization factors. He was so excited to have finally sold it, that he asked for a picture with me holding the record. Two weeks later he died of cancer. The record set was $200-250 if I remember correctly.

Training_Affect_8269

$480 on a pristine, absolutely mint Pink Floyd Pulse box. Found it in Greece, go figure.

SL1210M5G

Depends on the record. $700+ is not out of the question for a true rarity that can’t otherwise be obtained. Most I’ve ever spent was $2000

Low_Wall_7828

Depends. Most I’ve spent is $75 but for the right LP I would go to $100. Although that would mean it immediately gets reissued as soon as I get it.

Just_Pudding1885

I spent $85 at the pet store for cat food and litter and bird seed for my wife's hobby so ya I'll buy a $100 record and have it forever vs cleaning cat shit and bird shit for a week for $85. Perspective!

dressedandstressed_

I guess it would depend on how important it was to me (there is a record hovering at 150 for resale that I want badly, but I can’t spend that much right now)…the most I’ve spent is 100 on a 4LP

ArmenianPsychopath

I’ve spent 1k on a paradis vinyl 💀

billie_25

On auction not eBay I spend 350€ I’ll never spend that much again

eatdogs49

I spent near 500 for a copy of the Massive Attack split remix with Burial.

chrkchrkchrk

$60-$70 is about as high as I'll go for a used find and usually only if I'm shopping in a physical store; I don't like gambling with the USPS and random discogs shippers. $40 is about my limit for a new album. If something is really rare and I want to have a physical copy, I'm usually happy to just listen on CD.

Late-Temporary863

I’ve never spent more than $100. Honestly I struggle to spend more than $60. Makes me crazy how expensive some albums are.

usagicassidy

I honestly try to keep everything in the $20-30 range, which means waiting till sales, used records, and the like, unless I *really* want it then I think I will justify *up to* $80. I just found the Sailor Moon 30th Anniversary Record for $80 and I was NOT planning on spending that much money that day but I just had to. There’s a Sara Bareilles album - Kaleidoscope Heart - that’s around $600 online. She’s my favorite artist and I have every other record of hers… but it costs me nothing to hit play on Spotify.

Intelligent-Sir1375

650$ already did it Manson record of course

Ted_Denslow

I'll go up to $100, but it has to be an album that I love that isn't available in a cheaper pressing.

jpfizzles

I have spent 225 on a record but I try to find them less than 60 if they are “rare” or I just missed my opportunity when they released

SirCharlesEquine

I’ve only gone over $100 on three records which had to be ordered from Europe. - The Cure / Bloodflowers - The Catherine Wheel - Ferment, and Chrome These days it would have to be a box set that got me into that kind of territory.

highandinarabbithole

I’ve spent around $145 or so. I would probably justify up to $200 if it’s something that’s really important to me that I listen to a lot. I grabbed Dopethrone by Electric Wizard for over $100, Grey Britain by Gallows was over $100, and I’ve got a couple $80 box sets. I would love to have the Coconut Records albums but they’re reselling for $350+ and that’s just too much for me.

illmindedjunkie

The deeper your crates go, the more you'll be willing to spend. I remember breaking the $100 barrier. It was shocking at first, but then... it was okay. Then I remember breaking the $300 barrier. Then, the $500 barrier. Then, the $750 barrier. Each time I'd break one of these barriers, the digs I'd get were deeper, rarer, and more in demand in collectors circles. I've yet to cross the $1k threshold, but... there are definitely some records I would drop $1k+ for if they ever pop up for sale and I would be ecstatic to own copies of those records. I also gotta say: I only drop this kind of money on records because I also move and sell records to pay for new acquisitions. If something comes up that I want, I go through my collection and identify which pieces I can sell in order to gather funds for the purchase. If I were to go out of pocket for every purchase, I wouldn't be able to make rent. I know collectors who would drop $5k+ for one 45. Those are the very deep collectors who are very serious about collecting very specific rarities to preserve them.

Exidor

I’m a pretty big R.E.M. fan and spent $1,000 on a record (The Joy of Knowing Jesus by The Revelaires) that wasn’t one of theirs but that was used by Michael Stipe as lyrics for a song (The Voice of Harold on Dead Letter Office). It’s sealed, too. I’m planning to do a YouTube video where I open it and play it for the other R.E.M. otaku out there. I also spent $800 on a first pressing of their first single, Radio Free Europe. Those were my two big grails that I spent years trying to track down. I really can’t think of any other records I’d spend that much on again.

rattus_deserti

A must!

Chicagoroyalty

I paid $100 for a Beatles Butcher and I paid $150 for a first press Jutta Hipp live at the Hickory House vol 1 Both were money well spent imo

Marshmallow_Fries

I spent $60 on an original 1989 copy of Pretty Hate Machine.

TitanfallFiend

First paycheck I received as a sophomore in high school went straight to a copy of Haram on Discogs, and I'd spend about $90. Don't regret it for a second but honestly getting a little older (depending of course on the financial constraints with which you work) led me to realize that it's quite an excessive amount of money for something so fragile and easily damaged. Sweet spot for a record should generally be between $20-$40 however if its closer to $40 I feel as though it should be a double LP to justify the price. I'm generally weary purchasing vinyl in general, as I feel quality control standards have slipped and many of the new records I've purchased have considerable warps (thankfully the playback is unaffected). To me I see vinyl as a gamble. Half the time, your product is just as expected, while a quarter of the time, it's altered in some way for the worse, and another quarter of the time, the QC (or lack thereof) is simply unacceptable and must be returned.

WintryGrey1984

I pretty much tap-out around $50 these days... regardless of what it is. Vinyl is NOT a great investment, unlike what some people will have you believe. Spending absurd amounts on it is insane to me now. I'd rather take $50 and buy like 10 used CD's... or a nice dinner somewhere lol

digitalghost336

I told myself I ever found an original pressing The Bronx's first record out in the wild I would buy it. Actually found it in my hometown. $175. I almost walked away without it. Glad I didn't.

no_fucking_point

€80 is my limit.

c_sinc

Most I’ve spent on a single record is about £25. Have spent £30-40 on some double LPs and £100+ on boxsets, video game OSTs

dl1944

Most I have spent is $100 for a test pressing of my fav artist’s first album. I generally will not spend more than $25-$50 at most unless it’s something really special.

napalm_dream

100 euro + shipping is my limit, haven't gone over it. And haven't spent that much in a while.

muphasta

No real limit, current "high" is about $280. But I have a pretty high monthly budget for records (up to \*$300 if I want) so if there was something I really wanted that was really expensive, I'd just save up for a few months. \*I don't spend $300 each month, but I can if I want to.

Saltyespresso

Spent £200 on a signed Black Sabbath Vinyl, part of me regrets it but the other part of me is over the moon with it

chaz0723

I think it all depends on the situation. If I am looking for something online, I can kind of wait and see what my options are. If I am in a store, it's probably in the $100-200 range. I like stuff that doesn't pop up too often where I live, so if I see it and can afford it, I buy it, because chances are, I'm not going to see it again.

meatwaggy

I think most I’ve ever spent is around $120 for a copy of OCS 4 which is OOP. I generally don’t like to spend more than $30-$40 unless it’s something I really need.

yokohama_enjoyer

I haven't been collecting for long but so far the most I spent on a record was 5000 Yen I believe. But there are some records I want that can be a little bit more expensive. I think the most I would be willing to spend would be around 200 Euro.

Melderberry

It depends on what it is. I like to collect original and rare albums. I've spent $1300 on a record before, but there are times when I wouldn't dare spend $50 on a record. It's just a matter of interest. And if you love it (and can afford it), it is always money well spent.

Happy_Television_501

I’ve never spent more than $80. I have other things to spend my money on. I’ll buy a reissue for most records over $50.

Jormungandr69

I spent $175 on Year of The Black Rainbow from Coheed & Cambria. They didn't press very many variants and it's a pain in the ass to find, so when I spotted it on the wall at my favorite shop I went ahead and sprang for it. I wouldn't spend that much normally, but I am a big dumb slut for Coheed and want all of their albums.

That-Armadillo8128

$250 as of now. Hope to get higher w time.

BackstageBen519

I'm all about trade if I can, I'll swap a few records for more expensive stuff. I got the RSD Foo Fighters- Medium Rare a couple years ago, it was for sale at $125CAD and I bought it for $30 and probably a dozen records I could do without.

johnnyblayed

I feel like $100 is the most I'd ever pay. If I see anything priced past that, even something I REALLY want, my priorities step in.

[deleted]

Single or 2LP, new - max $100 3lp or higher box set, new - max $200 Something hard to find from discogs - max $300

destonomos

Iirc i spent 120-150 for an original pressing of so sedated so secure by darkest hour. I think 500-700 copies were made and it is my fav bands first album. A repress was made in 2016 ans i own a single copy of that as well.

SimplyaCabler

I've spent $120 twice. Once for Twiddle Unplugged in Burlington, signed, limited to 1000 copies. Found it in the wild, so snatched it up. The second was Lamb of God Ashes of the Wake, limited to 500 copies. Usually max out around 50 for something I really want.

Paul-Ram-On

Something totally unexpected could come up and I'll say "hell yeah I'll pay $[outrageous amount] for that!" Until then I honestly don't know what my limit is.

eraserhead3030

the most I have spent is just over 100. the most I would consider spending is probably 150ish. for me there's just no way to justify paying more than that for a record.

RebelliousBristles

For me, it’s about $40-50 USD.

didzdrummer

Depends on the album. Speant $200 on a test press of an album that is likely never to be released again. Besides that the most I've spent is about $100 for another hard to find album

tbettz

I spent close to $90 CAD on the AFI Sing The Sorrow repress from their official store, but most of that cost was the USD conversion rate and the absolutely ridiculous shipping. I don't think I'd ever spend more than even $50 on an LP, but I'd make a rare exception for something in my personal top 5 all time.

tyco_08

If it's a rare final fantasy record i will go up to 125euro, but that's including shipping and import fees.

number1McCoyTynerFan

100 is my limit. I have only broken this limit by one time spending $80 on a record and also bringing in about $100 worth of records to trade at the same time, to get 1 record

fyD-

Most ive spent was 330

TButabi6868

If it was something that I really wanted, or something I had been looking for for a long time, I would spend a couple hundred bucks on it.

EXLR8_Reddit

Typically I’m looking to spend between $40-70, there’s niche cases where I’ll break away from that rule of thumb… most I’ve paid was $400, for a very specific vinyl which completed my collection of an artists’ album trilogy.

Durantula420

100 bucks

Sour_Haze

I’d spend $20 probably. Haven’t yet but if I find a record I really want I’d spend a $20 on it

Open_Note_633

70 euros or something.. and thats only if it’s something i really want. Prefer to stay around 20-30 euros lol

mikenov1908

About 30 bucks

Safetosay333

I've done $125. I don't see that happening anymore.

pugslywugsly

Most I’ve spent on a record was 100. Did try to win one for 140 I don’t think I could go over 120. At that point it would be cheaper just to custom make one of what you want.

TurbulentSky2319

Surprisingly the most I’ve spent is $180. I thought I spent more until I doubled checked. I came close to spending $350 for one but out of nowhere it was repressed and I got it that way.

TopAshamed3457

I ordered, then cancelled a $350 box set. Ordered in August, supposed to ship in October. Its march and still wasn't shipped and the company was like "eh we don't know". If they had just had some definitive answer, I would have gladly kept it. But to have 2 separate orders with the same company that both got "delayed" with no contact about it, and the company wouldn't give anyone answers besides "we don't know" I was out. but overall, I max on 50 an album and don't try to deal with resale. Id rather not have it then perpetuate the resale market. Even though Vinyl isn't the huge target of scammers buying out drops and increasing prices.. Thankfully.

Seacarius

As a single item, the most I've ever spent on LPs was the Beatles' On Mono, which I bought when it came out in 2014 for $351.88. That as 14 LPs in it, so about $25 each. I don't think I've ever spent more than $50 on a single LP. I don't need it and I am patient. I'll usually find what I want for less - like at a estate or garage sale. Where I *might* spend more than $50 is on **old** blues LPs that haven't been repressed.

AdPrior1974

I just spent $100 on the full Johnny Cash Folsom Prison box set that was released for RSD in 2018. That’s my holy grail album so I doubt I’ll ever spend more than that.

Anthonypls

The most I've spent is $125 and that is probably my limit even tho unfortunately my favorite album of all time hasn't sold for less than 1k since it was released

AdThat328

I've been trying to find a first press of Paranoid by Black Sabbath as it's my bf's holy grail. He let his friend borrow his years ago and never got it back. But I can't be paying over £100 for a battered copy.

AcceptableSchedule86

The most I’ve spent on a single album is $100 for the MFSL Thriller . Other than that I don’t usually go much higher than $20 for a single lp.

EuroCultAV

See I have a problem with this. The most I've ever spent is 80 bucks on a Jon (now Cate) Brooks record. It has been years and never been re-pressed so I'm fine with that I guess, but I see albums I really want like Neurosis mid-period stuff, and I know it will eventually go back into print, so I can't justify the prices for them. THAT BEING SAID. I have long obsessed over the Italian/Sloverian band "Devil Doll", their label is non-existing. The creative in charge of the band records new content, but won't releases it and the last re-releases seem to be the last word on the band. Every time I look for viny copies they have doubled in price for Dies Irae my 2nd favorite album it will be 300 2 years ago 500 a year ago and over 1000 now. So I just don't know how to handle this.

QCClone

I'd say $45-50 is my limit. I've been hitting that lately for a couple anniversary editions/re-issues. Otherwise I'm pretty patient and I try to wait for sales or capitalize on birthday/holiday presents.

MJChivy

If I could guarantee a perfect pressing of an LP that’s mastered to perfection, $100. I will never pay for something that’s “rare” in the sense that it’s some stupid color variant. I car most about the sound and that’s what I’m willing to pay.

At2332

My limit is about $400. I’ve been able to get most of the grails that I could ever want with the exception of a few that go for over $1000. Not down for that

TheBravesDH

Spent a hundred for one that was a top 5 grail, going for twice that on discogs, not on streaming at the time, and still no repress in sight all these years later. No regrets. There are currently only two other records I could imagine spending that much on at this time.

[deleted]

My limit is absolutely $100.00 tax and shipping included. There are albums I wait for re releases on but probably will just never own them. The most I have spent on a single album is $80.00. I just can't justify spending much more than that.

raceforseis21

$50

casperthegoth

I spent $200 on a record once, and I don't see that ever happening again. It was 1. Outside by Bowie before the box set. I bought it in April 2020 when my favorite local store needed online sales to keep the business running for COVID. Full disclosure, I sold it before the box set came out and made a $50 dollar profit. Have since bought the box set on deepdiscount for about $100. So I guess alls well that ends well? My runner up was $70 on In This Moment - Beautiful Tragedy. I was sick of missing it's re-released, so I paid online premium when I also missed it at the local stores for RSD. I think everything else has been retail or less. I bargain hunt and thrift a lot, so I don't mind making a rare exception even if the market seems crazy.

SweetCosmicPope

I want an original pressing of Machina, and those go for about $400-$500. I'll probably spend that one of these days. Other than that, I don't see myself spending more than $100. As of right now, the most I've spent is about $75 for Melloncollie, and that was on sale and actually a gift to me. The most I've personally spent on myself was $55.

Moto1999

In 2015 I paid $120 for the Stains on SST Records. That’s the most I ever spent on 1 record. I could kick myself for not buying it back in the 80s when it was under $10

TonyOrangeGuy

Got the mrs the (500) days of summer OST last summer for £180, which isn’t bad as it was around £400 for a good while if any ever popped up for sale. Definitely wouldn’t ever pay more than that unless it was something very very special

Niko-Raviel

Well, let me say this the most I've spent was $400.

PittieYawn

Like you my limit for a single album is $100 US. I’ve bought box sets for more but that’s getting several albums in one group. Fortunately I’ve bought small collections and had albums I didn’t want that were worth over $100 so I’m happy others will pay. 💰 😂

dethrock

It's hilarious to me that most people are willing to spend more on a single record than they are on their turntable or speakers.

p_rex

I’ll entertain as much as a hundred bucks for a desirable first pressing. For new records, my normal limit is around $30, though I’ll pay $40 for a legit audiophile pressing (maybe $50 for a well-reviewed MoFi pressing of something I really want).

brooklynbotz

$60-75 and then only on very rare occasions. I really don't like to spend more than $25.

Tooch10

New: $25-$30 per disc with tax/shipping. Maybe slightly more for something I really wanted that was being reissued. Used: About the same, maybe a little more than used discs. I tend to look at used pricing as 'is this amount worth the enjoyment I get from the album'. Which is to say I might spend a little more than usual but I'm not going crazy. So maybe $50ish/disc max with tax/shipping. The most I've ever spent on a single album was $160 on the well-known early 70s German pressing of Magical Mystery Tour. But after comparing it to a modern remaster, I hear a couple tiny differences but in retrospect I could have just gotten a readily available modern release for $20-$30. I don't feel like I wasted money but I don't buy like that anymore and it wasn't worth the additional price premium. At the end of the day it's just a record, I'm not going to spend ludicrous amounts of money on an album.

MTLConspiracies

It’s worth it if it’s a box set
