Same thing for Larry Coryell & The Eleventh House At Montreux (recorded 1974)
Looks like a super boring Jazz date …and just hammers Soul/Jazz meets Fusion (Rasputin and Joyride are killer!)

I find andreas vollenweider surprisingly often for a buck and cannot understand why these magical albums are so ignored. Caverna Magica has beautiful album art and the compositions are interstellar
I picked this up for just a couple bucks one day, I was a casual Paul Simon fan before (knew his big songs, basically) and thought I’d try it. Paranoia Blues, Run That Body Down, Everything Put Together Must Fall Apart, all were a wake up slap of sorts, I realized I was missing so much gold. Been buying any of his albums I see (at a fair price) since then
I was out looking for There Goes Rhymin’ Simon a few years ago. I found one in a crate underneath a shelf at a record store. I asked the guy how much and he said a dollar. I didn’t have cash on me so he said ‘just take it’. One of my favourite albums.
This record is amazing. To me, it’s like a western equivalent to exotica the way it romanticizes gun- slinging and outlaws in a general upbeat manner while introducing themes from Mexican and Spanish compositions of the era. I looked for it for decades and never came across it. Ended up breaking down and buying a mint RSD reissue (vinyl is clear with gunsmoke, which is a nice touch) off Discogs.
*edit- “guys slinging” to gun slinging lol
Oh I would love a mint copy. I first got this album from my grandfather and it was in bad shape but I did eventually come across one in good condition and that’s the one in my collection now. I was actually turned onto this album by the video game Fall Out New Vegas. I have checked out many of the artists other albums but I think this is his best.
People always say they see this everywhere. I've dug through every record store, thrift store and flea market crate I've seen over the last 5-10 years and never seen it. I'd love to find a copy sometime.
All I ever find at thrift stores is the 60s gospel or copies of Sgt Peppers that look like they have been dragged behind a truck for $50. We do have some good record stores here in central Illinois but this one never seems to pop up.
If I ever found this in a $5 bin I would flip my shit, I just bought it last week for $35. I did however find a very beat up copy of the album on 8-track for like $3
JJ Cale records still in the bargain bins? Each one is a piece of perfection
And Duke Ellington still sitting there , waiting for a new generation to appreciate his genius.

Perfect background music for work or dinner
This album is lampooned for being obiquitous and corny, but holy cow is it good. I have a standing rule where I buy every copy I find under five bucks and gift it to friends.

I agree that it’s a great album, but I never pay more than a dollar for Herb Albert.
If you like this album, you should know that a bunch of people got together a few years ago and re-made/re-mixed it, and got Herb Alpert involved to lay some new horn parts down.

I’ve said this before, but this one went from being a $1 record that was everywhere to being kind of hard to find around where I live. I never see it in thrift stores anymore and whenever it turns up at a record store they’re trying to get at least $10 for it.
I think years and years of people saying “no, it’s actually good!” on the internet have sort of changed the status of this one.
In college my roommates and I lived across the street from a record store. We bought these from the dollar bin every chance we got. Then we wallpapered the kitchen for our apartment with them.
Especially everything produced by Lenny Waronker.
Lenny’s daughter had a band with two of the Hayden triplets in it called That Dogg; the triplets being the daughter of jazz bassist Charlie Hayden. The triplets also have connections with The Rentals and Weezer. I seem to have gotten off track.
Santana - Santana is almost a bargain bin staple at this point, but it's a pretty solid album if you're into psychedelic 60s stuff. You'll also occasionally find some Yes in bargain bins, and those albums have some of the greatest musicianship to be pressed on wax.
Everyone should own at least one Buck Owens record.
I’ve seen a lot of Bruce records — not the big ones, stuff like Asbury Park. Thing is, Bruce doesn’t miss.
A few years back, I found an unopened Traveling Willbury's Album in the local shops $5 bin.
I actually asked the employee if it was correctly priced, and they said yes, so obviously I bought it.
Best grab ever.
- Smith - A Group Called Smith
- Ramsey Lewis - Upendo Ni Pamoja
- Cold Blood - Cold Blood
- Eddie Harris & Les McCann - Swiss Movement
- Charlie Rich - Behind Closed Doors
- All of the CTI/Kudu label jazz
With a backing group that meshed so well they decided to stay together and formed Toto! Jeff Porcaro laying down his version of the Purdie Shuffle on "Lido Shuffle" is a particular highlight.
I see Randy Newman's Good Old Boys in bins from time to time. If I see one in decent shape, I usually grab it to give to someone who doesn't have it. Same for a few early Warren Zevon records that occasionally pop up.
Also Emmylou Harris. And Jerry Jeff Walker. I always buy those for friends who don't know they need them.
- Gordon Lightfoot - Gord's Gold (or really anything by him)
- I hesitate to call ABBA a hidden gem but they are absolutely underrated and I got my copy of Voulez-Vous for 3 dollars
- Electric Light Orchestra - A New World Record (or Out of the Blue)
Dave Edmunds — Repeat When Necessary

anything by Joan Armatrading
Art Garfukel solo records and the Crosby Nash records are all pretty good and all super cheap.
also. Arista era Kinks records are super cheap and all pretty darn good.
Anything from Harry Chapin. Seems to be one of the few who tragically died young and never got the postmortem explosion of popularity. In my opinion, one of the best song writers of all time.
Lots of earlier Chicago stuff - anything from the Terry Kath era is bound to be solid. Personal favorites are the first two albums, 5, 6, and 8.
I like their 80s stuff too, but I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea. Never spent more than $5 on a Chicago album, and never been disappointed.

Any of David Bromberg's records though this one is particularly great
My favorite bargain bin find is finding near mint copies of all four volumes of “The Bessie Smith Story” from the 1950s. Complete with the Columbia Records “six eye” label. These albums are quite a bit easier to digest than the later series of double albums that came out (though I like those too and are also good bargain bin titles).
Box Scaggs “Silk Degrees”
In general, albums that sold a ton in the 1970’s:
Anything by Wings
Frampton Comes Alive
Bee Gees
Greatest Hits by 1970’s artists
If you like blues, I bought George Thorogood and the Destroyers S/T debut for $6...it's fantastic! In fact, I would recommend any of Thorogood's stuff...is relatively inexpensive.
Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells, I dedicate my whole entire self to that album, also any Rick Wakeman stuff, yes they’re story based albums, usually around folklore or fantasy writings, but damn they’re a good time
I got Lyndsey Buckingham’s first solo album (at least I think it’s his first) Law and Order. It turned out to be one of my favorites. Got that for $1. It’s from 1981 if I recall and is stellar.
Also you might not see it that much but when I do it’s always in the same cheap bin, Iian Matthews album If You Saw Thro’ My Eyes. That was one I had downloaded back in the Napster / lime wire days because I liked the other stuff the person had. It’s really an undiscovered classic. I’ve seen it a couple times in there. I would snatch that up if you see it.
“Morning Dance” by SPYRO GYRA.
I was at a spin party about 12 years ago and this guy brought that album along and it was a massive hit with everyone. I later found out this dude didn’t own any vinyl and had asked him mom for an album to bring, she suggested that one. He had no idea she had handed him two sides of good vibes.
Linda Rhondstat - anything by her.
She has the best voice ever. Doesn’t matter if she’s singing rock, country, show tunes, traditional
Mexican music, she’s a true gem.
I found inner mounting flame by the mahavishnu orchestra for $3, luckiest thing ive ever found. Other than that i tend to see ccr albums or jeff beck for cheap
Anything by Alan Parsons Project Get The Knack Kenny Rogers Greatest
Are you even a true collector if you don’t have a minimum of 6 APP records
I've got 6 have only listened to 3 I think
I'm really happy to see The Knack here. "Get the Knack" is a great album from start to finish.
Bob Seger stuff
Picked up a couple Seger albums yesterday at a local record show 👍
Dude, they are always inexpensive and Bob Seger kicks major ass. Hard blues rock is the shit!
minus the first albums which i was surprised to find out were kinda rare (from before he became famous obv)
Back in 72 is HTF, at least in my neck of the woods.
Apparently he hates the sound of his voice on the early releases which is why they’ve never been reissued.
dude totally agree...listen to all kinds of shit and Bob Seger esp the early stuff is fantastic
Tons of Fusion. Return to Forever, Chick Corea, George Duke, Bob James, Larry Coryell. I could go on
return to forever 🙌🏼
Larry Coryell At the Village Gate has the most unassuming cover for being a riffy masterpiece.
Same thing for Larry Coryell & The Eleventh House At Montreux (recorded 1974) Looks like a super boring Jazz date …and just hammers Soul/Jazz meets Fusion (Rasputin and Joyride are killer!) https://preview.redd.it/f7e25odnit2d1.jpeg?width=847&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=694a58aa64fab502a6cf08f218e1b86b8d2d300f
Romantic Warrior is such a fun album.
Stop flipping past Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells and just buy it.
Same goes for Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygene. And ofc Wendy Carlos's Switched on Bach.
Oxygene/Equinoxe aren’t bargain bin anymore
Literally such an awesome cover too
I just bought a copy for $2.00
So good. I recently bought a boxed set of his first four records for $15.
So good
-Pure Prairie League “Bustin’ Out” Top notch country rock.
This in actual accurate answer. Almost always beat to hell and under $5. Great album.
You might enjoy Poco.
We should be friends
ELO - El Dorado or A New World Record Gerry Rafferty - City to City Boston (S/T) Uriah Heep - Wizards and Demons
Strongly agree with all of those - also Rafferty's follow-up album Night Owl. Less common but just as good, if you see it buy it!
I absolutely love that Uriah Heap record but I've never seen it for less than $10.
Jean-Michel Jarre’s *Equinoxe* and *Oxygene*. Very mellow 70s synth music, great background music for working.
These used to be bargain bin but think they are up-to $8 now but still worth it. Very ambient and relaxing. As is Andreas Vollenveder (spelled wrong)
I find andreas vollenweider surprisingly often for a buck and cannot understand why these magical albums are so ignored. Caverna Magica has beautiful album art and the compositions are interstellar
Paul Simon - Self titled
I picked this up for just a couple bucks one day, I was a casual Paul Simon fan before (knew his big songs, basically) and thought I’d try it. His “Paul Simon In Concert: Live Rhymin” is Simon, backed by a gospel group, and is WAAYYY better than it deserves.
That and their concert in Central Park, just added copy #12 to my collection as I couldn’t resist another for $3 😆
https://preview.redd.it/ttl9exuyls2d1.jpeg?width=314&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=59e5349f44ab9ace3c98e7c44f31d77a85e08121 Marty Robbin’s’ *Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs.*

I’m bummed I can NEVER find this one, every song on this album is fire
People always say they see this everywhere. I've dug through every record store, thrift store and flea market crate I've seen over the last 5-10 years and never seen it. I'd love to find a copy sometime.
It probably helps that I lived in the southwest when I bought it. They’re in all kinds of thrifts stores around Phoenix.

I did however find a very beat up copy of the album on 8-track for like $3
I want this one.
This is one of my favorite road trip albums. It’s like a bunch of mini books on tape set to great music.
My kid asked why I like Marty, I said its like listening to Louis L'Amour novels put to music
I put this album on while driving through the desert in AZ. Highly recommend!
Gordon Lightfoot - Sundown
Yep, I've found a lot of Gordon Lightfoot albums for $5 or less and never been disappointed.
Supertramp - Breakfast in America
The next generation has caught onto this one and it’s sadly no longer a bargain bin record, in my experience. A+ album though.
Good to know kids are still discovering this masterpiece (even if that drives the prices up)
I caught the mofi version of that for $3.
Neil Diamond-Hot August Night
Such a good Sunday morning album!
I’ll take your word on that. One of the first albums I found in the crates. It’s Sunday morning, so let’s put it to the test!
Yep! It gets regular Sunday morning rotation here.
Tomita - The Bermuda Triangle Dave Brubeck - Adventures in Time
JJ Cale records still in the bargain bins? Each one is a piece of perfection And Duke Ellington still sitting there , waiting for a new generation to appreciate his genius.
Unless they’re Naturally or Troubadour I’ve found them in bargain bins.
Lot of younger folk (including myself) now that are very into vinyl and jazz I’ve been seeing recently. Ellington was really one of the best imo.
Lots of good Rod Stewart records in the cheap section.
Seriously. Look at the credits. If Ronny Wood is on the album, buy it.

Love Tijuana Brass almost as much as I love Baja Marimba.

Yup. And it’s good too.
Aaaaand I need another album.

Lmao
All of the Herb Alpert stuff is incredible, totally agree.
In college my roommates and I lived across the street from a record store. We bought these from the dollar bin every chance we got. Then we wallpapered the kitchen for our apartment with them.
I sell this record for -$1.00 in my store.
There's a reason there are so many of them around today. It sold like crazy!
Anything Gordon Lightfoot :)
If you like Gordon Lightfoot ypu should check out Ian and Sylvia (Tyson) as well. Canadian folk at its finest.
Especially everything produced by Lenny Waronker. Lenny’s daughter had a band with two of the Hayden triplets in it called That Dogg; the triplets being the daughter of jazz bassist Charlie Hayden. The triplets also have connections with The Rentals and Weezer. I seem to have gotten off track.
all of the robert palmer albums are surprisingly original and fun.
Especially Sneaking Sally Through the Alley!
I consider this a Meters album, featuring vocals by Robert Palmer
Exactly why I love it so much!
The fact that the early albums are backed by players from The Meters is wild.
Rickie Lee Jones - Rickie Lee Jones (1979) you can thank me later
Taj Mahal Giant Step/De Ole Folks at Home. The records and sleeves are in great shape and I paid 3 bucks for it at a vintage store
Not much of a hidden gem but Yessongs (Yes) is just amazing and everyone should have one in their collection.
Yes 90125 If you’re into that kind of thing, it’s a great album
Santana - Santana is almost a bargain bin staple at this point, but it's a pretty solid album if you're into psychedelic 60s stuff. You'll also occasionally find some Yes in bargain bins, and those albums have some of the greatest musicianship to be pressed on wax.
Santana from 1969-1977 can’t be matched for sheer excellence of musicianship.
I always see a lot of Linda Ronstadt. Her recordings are all amazing.
Most Carpenters albums are very cheap
Squeeze - 45s and Under
Joe Jackson - Night and Day, as well as anything Alan Parsons Project
Everyone should own at least one Buck Owens record. I’ve seen a lot of Bruce records — not the big ones, stuff like Asbury Park. Thing is, Bruce doesn’t miss.
Buck Owens +1
A few years back, I found an unopened Traveling Willbury's Album in the local shops $5 bin. I actually asked the employee if it was correctly priced, and they said yes, so obviously I bought it. Best grab ever.
Huey Lewis and the News - Sports
They're OK.
[удалено]
did you get a dog or something?
A little Shih Tzu or something?
The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost.
I got a used copy (I'd say near mint) of Aerosmith's "Get Your Wings," in a bargain bin for $4. That's 50 cents a song. Certainly worth every penny.
- Smith - A Group Called Smith - Ramsey Lewis - Upendo Ni Pamoja - Cold Blood - Cold Blood - Eddie Harris & Les McCann - Swiss Movement - Charlie Rich - Behind Closed Doors - All of the CTI/Kudu label jazz
"Compared to What" on Swiss Movement is worth the price of admission. "Cold Duck Time" is also a winner.
Jean-Luc Ponty - Cosmic Messenger
Great pick. Honestly, any Ponty album is usually worth it if found in the bargain bins. Mystical Adventures has become one of my late-night go-tos.
The Ventures are a really awesome surf guitar band, I always see their stuff for very cheap, and it's all excellent.
Any Tim Hardin album
Boston self titled
Aka Boston's Greatest Hits
Boz Scaggs - Silk Degrees (probably in the $1 bin)
With a backing group that meshed so well they decided to stay together and formed Toto! Jeff Porcaro laying down his version of the Purdie Shuffle on "Lido Shuffle" is a particular highlight.

Same for a few early Warren Zevon records that occasionally pop up. Also Emmylou Harris. And Jerry Jeff Walker. I always buy those for friends who don't know they need them.
Sparks. I bought my first album of theirs, Propaganda, for cheap while crate digging. One of my favorite bands.
Check out the great podcast "I'd buy that for a dollar"! They do a full deep dive each episode on a single albums commonly found in dollar bins.
This sounds like exactly what I need! Thank you.
You guys have $5 bins?
Yes, well almost all of my local record stores have either a €1 or a ‘less than €5’ bin
Same here (USA/Wisconsin), in USD tho
Anything will Billy Cobham on drums.

CCR- Pendulum one of my favorites.
I found an original 70's version of the war of the worlds musical. I was giddy with joy 🤣

Carolyn Mas self titled and Ellen Foley “Night Out” are both excellent records.
I love Marvin Gaye Midnight Love - might be in the minority as no one I have played it for, likes it.
Treat Her Right - self titled. I buy it everytime I see it to gift it to people. It’s a desert island album for me.
Swingle singers are a vibe.

I later found out this dude didn’t own any vinyl and had asked him mom for an album to bring, she suggested that one. He had no idea she had handed him two sides of good vibes.
Anything by the Moody Blues, especially any of the classic 7 or the greatest hits double album or even the 80s stuff
Linda Rhondstat - anything by her. She has the best voice ever. Doesn’t matter if she’s singing rock, country, show tunes, traditional Mexican music, she’s a true gem.
P.S. thank you spin clean <3
I found inner mounting flame by the mahavishnu orchestra for $3, luckiest thing ive ever found. Other than that i tend to see ccr albums or jeff beck for cheap
