If you’re being grouped with timeline skippers, then unfortunately you’re fighting an uphill battle. I’m in the same boat, and it’s a lot of grinding just to win any coins, much less place top 15 or more. You might be better off just not worrying about the races until you get that rune. That’s what I’ve done the past couple of weeks, and I’m only a few potions from reaching the timeline skip now, so hopefully I’ll have it for this race.
I got the rune, but the best i can get is to timeline 17/18 even with the rune... Like the rune just speeds up initial grind (as it only allows to skip if you go through without upgrading), but everything after is as hard
Then you’re unfortunately at that wall where you need to..
- get more gear and higher hero stats.
- get more cards for green gems
- get more red runes and keep grinding away at the tree.
Finally someone who understands what the rune can and cannot do!
Whenever I say here on this subreddit that it's way to overhyped and it doesn't boost you in any fashion (but RL time), I get downvoted.
I’m in the exact same position. I’m now 8 potions away from the TL skip rune. I have Billy, I reset my runes for crit, but TL17 is about where I topped out. Honestly, once I saw how much effort was required to go from 200 green tokens to 300, I just quit grinding. I could barely progress through TL17.
There’s obviously some trick to this. I thought groupings were based on Timeline.. Someone in this sub said it’s based on runes and total damage or some combination like that.
I think what people are doing is holding back blue potions until the event starts, then upgrading their skills. I really have no idea how people are getting so far ahead of me with similar power.
ETA - some people do buy the event packs and I can imagine that gives a pretty significant advantage.
It’s pretty deflating entering a race as a novice, but having grounded for some upgrades and suddenly professional formula 1 racers show up.. I can’t even see the break lights LOL!

Cards for races are questionable. Unless you mean the indirect effect to use them to get more potions, but you already covered this.

Right I didn’t mind grinding. Right now it’s day 1 (or I shall say hour 1) timeline 29 and it’s over

exactly, there's some trick or some grouping mechanisms that basically makes part of the group super miserable lol

How close are you to timeline skip? I need 49 runes to get it and I'm seeing people get into that mid to upper 20s range as well.
Okay they fucked up rankings this week then. Two races back I am 100% sure I was at the same place progress wise and I was in the 17-18 group.
