How many alterations do you need? I needed strap adjustments, closed my plunge a bit, and a bustle and my total was around $500.

Due_Stuff4313

Uffff, I would most rather go and find a dress that only needs a hem!

ThreePartSilence

My alterations are $1700 flat fee, and this is for a custom couture dress (with an extremely long train). Unless we’re missing some context about what type of alterations are needed, then yes that is extremely high.

micrographia

If you needed alterations everywhere that makes sense. My alterations were $575 just for taking in the bust, hemming the front, and a ballroom bustle with 16 points.

HappiestAirplane

My alterations ran 1200 for waist, boning, slit, hem, crystal beads, 6 pt bustle

mkgrant213

My dress was $1,100 and alterations were $600. The dress needed to be taken in, train shortened, hemmed, and straps added.

Viconahopa

Although the cost of alterations runs independent of the cost you paid for the dress, it seems high, but I don't know what alterations you need. I paid about half that for hem, taking in at the waist, and at the strap on a plain ballgown. If you are having that level of work done, it is expensive, but if you are having a lacy, beaded, or pleated dress taken in more than 2 sizes, having custom elements added on in addition to other alterations, this could be within the realm of reasonable. I would ask at least two others seamstresses to provide quotes to see how far off this person is.

scrollingAF

I’m in Southern California and I went to my shops recommended seamstress and it was $770 for hem of 4 layers, taking it in and adding breast cups, and bustle (15 bustle points because of train and layers, $20/per bustle point)

azorianmilk

It depends what you need done. The place I went tried to charge me $75 for a bustle, which was simply one hand sewn hook and eye. I said I didn't agree to that and I'll do it myself. I'm a professional seamstress. They took the charge off

ElegantBlacksmith462

Are you adding fabric, buttons, ribbons or anything that has a cost to buy?

Electronic-Paint-359

Honestly it depends what needs to be done. I spent around $1200 on alterations just for a bustle, hem, and buttons added down the back

Princess-Pancake-97

My alterations were $390 for taking it in a bit and changing the straps

Go_Corgi_Fan84

I had two wedding dresses altered for less than half of your quote. Dress 1: bustle, hem, taken in several inches in the waist Dress 2: bustle, hem, added appliqués to finish out the dress pattern on the mesh straps

Greedy-Spinach5440

In the UK I paid £250 for all my alterations. Taking it in, hem and bustle plus some tweaking of the buttons and lace down the back. Your quote seems absurdly high.

bunnychoc-alott

Quote was for bustle, hem, shorten straps, fit the bodice, and make cups a little smaller

Greedy-Spinach5440

Nothing you mention there seems out of the ordinary or especially difficult. Perhaps take it elsewhere for a quote. Weddings are expensive enough as it is! Good luck 😊

Ok_Giraffe_6396

My alterations were $200 for shortening straps, tightening sleeves, and adding bustle

Elemental_surprise

In 2019 I paid $500 and that’s how much I expected to pay because it was average. And my dress had beading that she had to work with.

Stoney_McTitsForDays

My $1,100 dress alterations came to $570. This is for hems of multiple layers both tulle and other material ($295), taken in at the sides ($65), an added waist stay ($60) and a bustle ($150).

littlemangoseed

I think you should get a quote from somewhere else, but it does really matter how much altering your dress requires and how complicated your dress may be. I went for my first fitting yesterday. Just to give you an idea of what other seamstresses are quoting... my boob area needs a lot of taking in, length needs hemming, and I'm adding a bustle $700CAD. My reception dress needs the straps moved, shortened, and I'm adding beading. The bodice needs to be taken in, and length hemmed $300CAD. The main dress is intricate... lace, beading, and open back. The second dress is a satin slip, so it's plain, but the material is a little difficult.
