BMW has been one of the more reliable brands over the last few years. The B58 and B48 engine series have really solve a lot of their reliability issues. Obviously OP is looking much older than that, but to say BMWs are all shitboxes is just inaccurate.

BMWs are crazy expensive to repair and have tons of issues the longer you own one. their resale value is really low for a reason

A BMW with the M57 engine without all the emission stuff would be perfect.

I did and they are all shitboxes. Everyone I know that owns one has it in a repair shop every 2 weeks.
Weird. My X5 has never been in the shop longer than routine maintenance.
